So decided to try this place for my very first time with a friend from work and her mom on Valentines day!! I thought it was going to be packed but at 1pm it was actually a little calmed. However the service was a little slow especially being lunch we needed faster service. I believe they were understaffed only saw about 3 waiters for the whole dining area. There were situations where the waiter was nowhere when we needed something and then took forever to bring us what we asked. At the end we were waiting to get our to go box and the waiter nowhere in sight, so we eventually just left it. As for the food, I had the Tofu Coconut soup for an appetizer and it was an interesting flavor, sort of like lemony, probably Lemongrass added to it. As for my entree,I had the Pad Pork, which was good but it was not something that wowed me. It included pepper, onions and mushrooms with pork pieces on a really savory sauce. If I do return I may try other dishes, I was not very content with my dish. read more

Great customer service! I was in town for a business trip and spotted Surin West. Unbeknownst to me , they closed at 2:30 pm and I arrived at 2:11pm. The bartender, Bobby,was extremely friendly and allowed me to order. Food was delivered hot and fresh and everything was delish! Food is mediocre at best. What is worse is the treatment of their patrons. I was visiting from out of town. The hostess had her back to me as she spoke to her bar back in the main dining room. The bar back made full eye contact with me the entire time for at least 2 minutes. Never once greeting me or even acknowledging my presence. It wasn't until I said excuse me, that she/ the hostess turned around. She then proceeded to place me in a completely empty dining room away from the other patrons, so their own special way of segregation I guess? The dining room she placed me in was Empty and I occupied the one table one CLEARLY MEANT for people picking up to go orders. I wanted to dine in and she knew that. Every person that came in after that were pick up orders. The one that wasn't where a group of people with pickup orders who changed their minds and wanted to dine in. A clear message example of customer no service. Invisible under certain circumstances but not for others. Every other person that came after that she placed in the main dining room unless they had a pickup order. So I was headed to Alabama today for a tasting later in the evening for a company that decided to carry their beer in Birmingham and met up with some family and stopped by this restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing I had a super crunch roll that was fresh and tasty also their to die for coconut soup that had a curry flavor along with some super delicious tofu. This place does awful business. We parked in their customer parking lot so that we go and eat. One hour after we got through eating our car got towed. That's not how you do business with your customers. We go and supported their local business and this is how they repaid us. The food was not worth the head ache and we will never go there again. This place is definitely a solid 3 for me. I love Thai and Asian cuisine so my hopes were high, and this Surin just really isn't it. The atmosphere is very nice, pretty bar and decor, especially after their recent renovation. The menu looks decent and you have many options, but really the food has never been up to par. Whatever I've gotten there has been overall bland, without the right balance of those delicious Asian flavors. Not to mention, the service almost always leaves something to be desired. That being said, why have I even been more than once? Once you know what you're getting it can occasionallyyyy hit the spot, there aren't many other "Thai" places around (hope that changes). Good place for groups who might be picky or have varied tastes. Overall, I wish Surin was better. Location and cuisine wise it had potential to be one of my most frequented spots. I've been going here for 25 years and now it's just... sad. The last two times I've been at least one person's order has been botched and not only do they refuse to fix it, they make the poor servers come out and try to gaslight you because the owner is so cheap. Today a friend ordered the eggplant noodle bowl and it had ZERO eggplant in it. Obviously the server was told "it will come out of your check" because she did logical backflips trying to explain why the eggplant not being in there was normal. NEVER an offer to, like, just fish out a couple pieces of eggplant and drop it in the bowl, even! So if you want your food served incorrectly and then get weird excuses by the poor wait staff this is the place to go. Surin West is hands down a Birmingham Staple. This is a must go place if you are in the mood for Thai inspired food and hand-rolled sushi. I have been a customer of Surin since my college days at UAB (Class Of 2005) and haven't been disappointed by this place at all. Had a couple of hiccups here and there but that is normal for a place that you frequently go to. My personally Thai dishes would have to be the Spicy Beef Salad (extra spicy); they cook the lean beef to perfection and the salad is always fresh. Surin has really great food for decent prices. Although I prefer Thai food places that aren't necessarily a "chain", they still seem to produce good quality food. I went here for lunch and it exceeded expectations. The service was phenomenal and everyone at the restaurant was extremely friendly. We ordered several appetizers that were brought out very quickly and I highly recommend trying the Thai tea if you want a sweeter drink to go along with your meal. I went to Surin West in 6 points with my fiancé and friends on a Friday night. It had been a while since my last visit and I was pleased to see the renovations they have completed look great. We were promptly seated and the fun began. Our server was great, very nice and accommodating she answered all of our questions and had brought the drinks and food out promptly. For drinks we tried a peach sale which was fantastic, very easy drinking and good to share amongst friends. My finance had a nice Pinot noir, I had beer on tap and our friends had cocktails. There range of drinks is pretty good and you can find some asian beers your may not find at other establishments. To each my fiancé had the cashew nut chicken which is always a favourite and I think their most under rated dish. I had the pad sew u [phonetic spelling ;) ] I'm a killer for noodles and these were top notch. The portion sizes are plentiful and I guarantee you will leave full. The interior looks gorgeous since the renovation. It's dark, moody, and adds a nice romantic atmosphere to the restaurant. That aside, the service and food aspect of it still needs a renovation. Service here has always been questionable. That's one thing where being consistent isn't ideal. Food has also been kind of sub-par as per usual as well. This is my go-to asian restaurant in Birmingham. I always order their spicy beef noodles and substitute it for tofu to go. It is so spicy and delicious. They are social distancing. For some reason, this Surin just does not seem to have very good service. The man and I had lunch here today, he ordered the cashew new tofu and I the massaman chicken. Of course, the coconut soup that comes before the meal was delicious. His tofu was good as usual. I had never had massaman before, but apparently I do not like it. It smells funny and tastes funny. Maybe it is the fish sauce. But i took one bite and almost barfed. I pushed my plate away and didn't touch it again. Our server, could have made a few extra bucks for the restaurant, seeing as how we had a coupon for a free meal. I would have gladly ordered something else. But we never saw the server again until he asked me if I wanted a box. But, considering he didn't even ask us if we wanted anything to drink, I am not surprised. Since it's located in Five Points, I can kill two birds with one stone and let them see this area of town, while enjoying a great meal. I usually start out with the crispy squid, crab angels, or some light sushi. All of these are great. For my main course, my favorites are Thai barbecue chicken, the spicy beef salad, spicy beef noodle, or sushi. If you like spice, the salad is the hottest thing on the menu. Great Thai lunch. We stopped in for lunch today, and this place was packed! Now I know why. We started with coconut soup, lime and lemon grass and mushrooms and coconut bra off, warm and nourishing. Then an appetizer of fried dumplings, warm and tender and bursting with juice. Then we had a plate of average sushi. We also had A delicious plate of stuck with red curry sauce. The vegetables and pineapple were fresh and bright and crunchy. The duck breast was meaty. The red curry sauce was warm and rich with a mild kick. Excellent service. Cheap prices. They have a large drink menu including cocktails and draft beer. Great prices, around $5 a beer. For dinner you can't go wrong with one of the sushi combinations. Normally around $17-$19 for about 14 pieces. The restaurant has recently been renovated, much nicer the before. The wait staff are very nice, and the restaurant is clean. You can't go wrong here. Been coming to Surin West for about 16 years and they have maintained a high standard of consistency since I've been a patron. Pound for pound Surin has the best sushi/sashimi (especially the poke bowls) in Birmingham, and they do a great spin on Asian fusion type dishes. The Ka Proud Lamb dish is a first class entree and if you're a fan of duck, the red curry duck is unbeatable. The ambience is laid back and the bartenders pour an excellent martini. And if you're a fan of heat, I believe they make their own red chili powder in-house. Store bought red chili powder doesn't compare. If you're an out of towner visiting Birmingham, put this spot on your "to do list." If you're a Birmingham native and have never visited Surin West, then you're missing out on one of the best establishments Birmingham has to offer. read more
