    Baby shower by the lake
    Susan W.

Went to a baby shower here yesterday and was totally impressed with this park! It has beautiful spacious gazebos for events, a fabulous playground for the kiddies, pickleball courts, and more, all around a lovely lake. The lawns are manicured, and studded with interesting sculptures. The walking paths are wide and level, the bathrooms are clean, and it is an altogether lovely place for a family outing, or just for a peaceful stroll by yourself. As they say, "Try it, you'll like it!"

Our family absolutely love Surprises Community Park. We love how active the city is and appreciate the time and care they take to make this park so special. During the winter season the park is such a fun experience for photo ops, beautiful installations to see, and fun interactive things to explore. We love taking a walk here, and are also able to enjoy the library and art center nearby. Our kids love the play area and my husband loves the pickleball courts. We love this outdoor space and all it has to offer. Also if you play Pokémon Go... This is a hot spot to play! So many players and it makes for great opportunities on community days! Take advantage of raids during this time!

Great community lots to do for everyone I enjoy the fishing and the dog parks. The community is clean and kind. Lots of parking for everyone and very well lit in the evening and very well taken care of.

Came to watch my grandson play baseball . The bathrooms are super clean, and the bleachers are safe for little ones. The concessions stand only allows purchasing with cards. I hate how you can't use money

Surprise Community Park surprisingly is very large. There is a huge pond with ducks, geese, fishes, turtles. There's picnic areas with bbq grills and clean restrooms. The toilet paper rolls are locked in so one cannot steal the rolls. There's swings, a dog park for large dogs and a separate park for small dogs. You can picnic, skate, and feed the fishes and ducks.

Definitely a lot of improvement over the last six months. Many places on the way from Michigan to Arizona. Nothing is nice is this. As for the goose poop put on your boots.

They have really done a lot to improve the commu itt park, landscaping, art, adding a second restroom across the park from the other, right now they are redoing the playground. It looks like it is going to be super fun. Our girls grew up here since birth. It has been our go-to for family walks and play. Not as many geese as they used to have. That is intentional, I believe. Our homeschool group has been meeting here since 1999. For 2 hours one day a week when school is in season. All the sudden the park Rangers feel like we are displacing the community. I learned about the group from taking one of our older daughters there years ago and meeting these wonderful families with wonderful kids. My neighbors come when our group meets so their young children not quite school age, can play with other children. We are working with the city now as they want to start charging us a lot of money to meet. We aren't there long, and we meet when all the other kids are in school. The city is hurting for money right now. Maybe from all the renovations. We have so much condensed housing and new homes I would hope taxes would help cover all that. Hoping for a future here for our group. Enjoying all the upgrades and changes in the meantime. Fingers crossed!

We love this park and the library. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas and had lovely music.

It was golden hour and the lake was just gorgeous!

This is a beautiful spot for the community! There are many activities for families. Whether fishing, playing pickle ball or basketball, or just taking a walk or picnicking, you won't be disappointed!

Ask the Community - Surprise Community Park

When do they have a food court or swap meet?

I have not heard of the City of Surprise having a swap meet or food court. They do have a lot of events for the community, which may have food trucks or vendors selling their merch. Here is a link to the City of Surprise upcoming events calendar.… Read more

Radio control boats? Is that considered a water craft?

Nothing but a fishing pole is allowed in the water at the park. City park questions or concerns? Ask Yelp or you can call directly at 623-222-2000 during business hours. They answer right away. =)

Are there walking paths? Is there a walking path around the lake? Distance around lake?

There is a walking path around the lake. .5 miles and plenty of side walks you can walk on that lead all the way to the police station if you want and that entire block around the Park, city hall and the police station.

Do you need a fishing license?

Yes - unless you are under 10

Is there a place for my dog to swim at the Park?

Unfortunately no due to the pond is also used for fishing. No animals or watercraft in the water.

Can i bring a canopy to surprise lake?

There's covered areas... And the area around the lake is slightly sloped, but I didn't see any signs saying you couldn't, but I also didn't see any canopies.. I did have a big umbrella though... I think it would be ok.

In no way should they be used as a soccer pitch. There were random holes dug, the grass is patchy at best, and if the city was in charge of drawing the lines for the pitch the linesman must have been drunk. It was an embarrassing field to call a soccer pitch.

Park has lots of shade around the play area. Sun sails are on top of the playground itself. Sails didn't provide much shade early in the morning. Temperature was in the low 70's, so we didn't mind. Play structures were in good condition. My youngest enjoyed playing there. The splash pad is located next to the park. I could see the area getting very busy on hot days. Not as much shade around the splash area. Lots of shaded parking around the park. Parking is shared with the police department and YMCA. There was still plenty of parking while we were there. The fields are also utilized by The Y for their sports programs. The only reason to not give the park 5 stars is the amount of trash. We were there on a Saturday morning. There before any games, before any other people really came. The trash cans were overflowing with trash. There was also lots of trash around the parking lot. Otherwise, Gateway is a wonderful community park.

You can tell it was designed to be a special place, and on the surface, it truly is adorable. That said, my experience left me feeling uneasy, mostly due to cleanliness and supervision concerns. I witnessed multiple children putting toys in their mouths (which is totally normal for kids), but what was concerning was that those same toys were often placed right back into shared play areas. While I later learned there is a designated bin for toys that have been in kids' mouths, this wasn't communicated upfront, and I didn't see it being consistently used or enforced. There also seemed to be inconsistency when it came to staff involvement. Across my two visits, I did see some staff members actively cleaning up and returning toys to their proper places, which I appreciated. However, I also observed others simply picking up toys and dropping them into corners of the rooms without any real organization or sanitizing. I completely understand that keeping up with kids is a challenge--I'm a parent too--but that's where consistent staff engagement becomes really important. Another issue was the level of parental supervision. Many parents were on their phones while their kids played freely. Again, that's ultimately a parenting responsibility, but in a shared environment like this, it contributes to the overall hygiene and safety concerns. I also want to mention that I found the staff presentation a bit unprofessional, which added to the overall impression that things weren't being closely managed. To be fair, you do sign a waiver regarding illness, and I understand that no play space can be completely germ-free. However, I did end up contracting chickenpox exactly 10 days after visiting, which makes me seriously question the effectiveness of their cleaning and sanitizing practices. Overall, this place is incredibly cute and full of potential. With more consistent staff involvement, clearer communication, better sanitization systems, and encouragement for parents to stay engaged, it could be an amazing environment. Right now, though, it falls short of what it could and should be.

When we were doing the final walk through before we signed the paperwork to close on the house, we noticed that the concrete border around the front yard was cracked in multiple places. We asked the man doing the walk through with us from Mattamy who told us that it was no problem and they would take care of it. He added it onto the list and said he would take care of that along with other issues (paint and such) in the next couple weeks. He fixed everything else in the coming month, but he didn't fix the cracked border. He told us several times that he would take care of it and then he said that it was an HOA issue, but he would contact them and get it done. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and waited and since they had fixed everything else. Fast forward a couple months and I contacted him again and he had left the company. The new contact from Mattamy said that he saw it on the walk through form and he would take care of it. I also contacted the Marley Park HOA and they said they would look into it. Over the following couple years, I have had several new repair people from Mattamy tell me that they can take care of it and it'll be easy and then they never fix it. The HOA has said that it is ok private property and refuse to fix it. Now, Marley Park HOA says it is not their fault, on private property and refuses to help. Mattamy says that they think that the HOA must have broken it when they were landscaping and so it isn't their problem either. They also said that it is too late now because the warranty expired even though I have literally asked since before I even owned the house. I am very frustrated as it happened before I bought the house and certainly was not caused by something I did. The two groups that could have caused it have been very hard to reach and Mattamy has made promises and then not followed through. My advice to anyone planning to build with them or to build in this neighborhood it this: Don't sign the paperwork until ALL repairs are fully done. If you have taken on responsibility for the house, you'll be on your own. Best of luck.
