My friend invited me as her guest to attended the 9am hot yoga class on Sunday, March 3rd. During the class the instructor and a practicioner had an arguement about being late. They went back and forth for a few minutes. I found the situation to be so disturbing. I make time to find peace in my often chaotic busy life and the ONE place that I most expect to find that peace is at yoga. It was so unprofessional how that entire situation was handled. This was my first time visiting and it will certainly be my last time visiting. I've been practicing yoga for over 7 years. Most of the instructors I have taken have been great. I would say 99%. I started practicing remotely during the pandemic and I finally decided to join a studio. I highly recommend surya yoga academy for those looking for a home. The owners are kind and make an effort to make the studio a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the instructors...well I can't help but to shout their praises. I actually practiced in Brooklyn recently and it made me appreciate the instructors here. I thought they were just as good, if not better, than the instructor in Brooklyn. I went to prenatal yoga classes at Surya starting at the beginning of my second trimester until the delivery of my healthy baby boy. I went through my pregnancy with minimal hip and back pain. I know from the one or two times I missed a class that a big part of staying pain free was prenatal yoga. I'd never done yoga before and have movement limitations that mean I can't get into a lot of the common yoga poses--and that's even before the pregnancy further limited my movement! The instructors, Isis and Reetu, spent time after the first few classes showing me how to modify poses using a chair so that I could get the benefit of a yoga practice without doing anything that hurt or strained my body. They were incredibly welcoming and encouraging--if you're pregnant and have never done yoga before, I would encourage you to give Surya a try, and ask for help if you need it! read more

If you like hot yoga, this place is for you, except all the classes you want to take will be booked full and the off chance you do book a class you will spend the next hour with your face in someone's butt. They pack these classes full, which fill up fast. Instructors are solid. I am updating this review because Surya has added classes that help reduce crowding. Megan Venzin is the best yoga teacher I've ever had! I absolutely love her hot yoga classes a d highly recommend it! Her classes are relaxing, challenging, fun and inspiring! Daba Briggs is great Classes are overcrowded and uncomfortable for doing poses. Once they overbooked a class so much that they turned people away! The unheated yoga room is pitifully small and a room with direct sunlight (super distracting). Classes are on top of a very festive Mexicana restaurant / bar = shavasana is easily interrupted by music. Customer service dealt with my husband the other day and made it clear that they didn't mind loosing a client over their own mistake. Not cool. read more

It was my first time today- I did the 4:30 PM hot yoga class. The room wasn't hot enough at all, it was warm but not hot. I'm assuming this is because they turned the heat off since the last class finished at 1:30pm? If indeed this is the case, I hope they make sure that the room is hot enough before class starts. I've asked a yogi after class about the temperature and he said that sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's not- it depends. A little consistency would be nice. I would like to walk out dripping in sweat and feeling great. I was looking to do "hot yoga" not "warm yoga". Still on a search for the perfect hot yoga studio in Jersey city. They have a very sneaky and sketchy membership cancellation policy. They charged me for 3 extra months at $125/month and aren't refunding my money. The cancellation policy of needing to email a request 30 days prior to cancellation is only stated at the point of purchase, not on their website, not emailed, and even their staff isn't aware of it. I checked their website, searched my emails and called their staff prior to membership cancellation and they told me I didn't need to do anything and they wouldn't continue charging me after my 6 months is up. This verbal confirmation doesn't hold, and now I am out $375. What if someone wants to cancel years after they make the purchase? I only had 6 months and couldn't remember to specifically write a request for cancellation 1 month prior to cancelling. This policy should be posted on their website (without having to go through the motions of making another purchase) for full transparency or at least sent out at the point of purchase, so customers can reference their old emails. Especially if the staff is not trained to share this info. I had enjoyed my time with Surya (besides how crowded it was) before this happened. I wouldn't recommend anyone get a membership at Surya purely based on principle and business ethics. read more

I took 5 classes at an incomparable price with their "2-week unlimited new student" offer. It was an awesome way to experience the range of classes and wonderful instructors! I especially enjoyed Dima's classes!, leaving physically exhausted but calm and rejuvenated. She has a beautiful voice that seamlessly guides you through the practice. Took my first class here on Sunday for free with a teacher in training. I thought this would be a great opportunity to check out the studio, and I was right! First of all, it took me a little while to find parking on Grove Street. If you are within walking distance of Surya, it's probably a great choice for you! But I could not imagine driving here on a regular basis. Second of all, I could not find the entrance because it's not clearly marked. I had to go into Orale next door and ask the host if he knew where a yoga studio was located. Luckily, he was very helpful and walked me out to the entrance (thanks, Orale host guy!). When I arrived at the front desk, the woman there asked me my name. I had to ask which studio I would need to enter and where I could put my things. I was surprised they didn't ask me to sign a waiver, given that I was a new student. Insurance liability much? The studios at Surya are TINY, and 15 students in a room felt very crowded. I am used to going to studios with a lot more space. I don't know if I could return here just for that fact. I like to play around in my yoga practice and push myself, and I don't want to feel like I'm going to fall into my neighbor if I lose balance. The positives are that the space is BRIGHT and inviting. Lots of light. If you like mirrors in your yoga practice, one of the studios has a mirrored wall. I didn't see many props available besides blocks, but maybe they were hidden somewhere. I would be interested to take a hot class here, but overall I was not too impressed with the studio. Too claustrophobic for my taste! read more

I was very excited for this studio to open and signed up for a first month of unlimited classes. I tried several classes and teachers and some were definitely more suited for my style and level than others. After the first month I bought a package of classes and have mostly stuck to the Sunday morning class with Steven Cheng. Steven is an amazing teacher and I've taken his classes in multiple places around JC and NYC. His heated class on Sunday a morning is fabulous and I have no complaints about anything he does. He is always on time, friendly, helpful, energetic, thoughtful and dedicated to teaching the best class he can every time. I did find some of the other classes to be lacking, and more suited to a beginner level, which isn't well laid out in the class descriptions. I also would like to see more classes in the early morning and more advanced classes or special focus classes. The space is great, everything is clean and filled with light. There were a few kinks in the beginning but all seems to be worked out now. read more

After practicing yoga for 10 years, at this point, I've visited many yoga studios in my travels and I can honestly say SURYA offers the best experience possible for serious yogis. The thing that makes Surya so amazing is that your hour of practice will never be boring. I've visited several Baptiste Studios and other Vinyasa studios around the country where instructors will not deviate from the monotonous warm up of sun salutations followed by some warrior poses and ending with some back bends. It gets so boring and you plateau as a yogi. At Surya the instructors are all SO different in the best way possible. The instructors are styles are so diverse and I honestly can say you never know what kind of creative sequence you will do. You can tell Jason puts SO much effort into developing his curriculum - building sequences that work up to specific postures and doing so in a way that is anatomically divine. Susan's jivamukti classes are so inspiring and Steven's flows offer amazing challenges for yogis who are ready to push the envelope. Both Steven and Susan also have the best playlists; Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen? What an added bonus to flow to! Rashila offers a pathway into Dharma yoga and Anayra and Julia's classes will help build arm and core strength in fun and acrobatic ways. Erica's classes are so beautiful and get me in such a zen state of mind. I also love that they offer Bikram so I don't have to join two studios to get my Bikram practice in. The ONE thing that may bug people is the heat can be inconsistent. I LOVE/NEED heat and humidity so I'm happiest when it is pumping. Seriously, this studio is my second home and I don't know what I would do without all three locations. Ghagan and his wife are tremendous assets to the JC/Hoboken yoga community. read more

I've taken 6 classes at Surya Jersey City so far and am really loving it. I've tried a few different studios in JC and Surya is by far the most professional. There is always someone at the front desk, it is very clean and they have a robust schedule with morning and night time classes. My only gripe is that while they have unheated classes, those still tend to get very hot and humid from the heated class that is happening. So really it's not an unheated class, it is just a class that the heat isn't on in that room in particular. It's beginner level heat maybe. Bring lots of water for whatever class you do. Arielle is also an extraordinary teacher. I've been practicing for many years but I find that her cues push me to go further. Recommend taking a class with her! read more

I took my very first hot vinyasa flow level 1 class on a Sunday at 12:15pm with Daba Briggs and I was immediately sold! It's a beginner level 1 class so if you've never done hot yoga before you should defnitely start with a level 1. Daba was amazing! The poses were doable and challenging at the same time. At times I was off balance, but she is patient and understanding and feels out your limitations. When she knows you can do a pose she helps you adjust. I felt very relaxed after the class, and the next day my back felt wonderfully sore! I had obviously worked some muscles that had never been worked before. The class doesn't get too big so there is some individual attention there which I appreciate. I actually won a 10 pack class off a tricky tray, but after I extinguish that I will continue to go. Once you go hot yoga with Daba you'll never go back. I know eventually I will have to move to another level. read more

I attended my first class at Surya last night (hot power vinyasa). The space is beautiful and well appointed. The host was friendly and inviting, taking time to point me around since it was my first time in. The teacher was great (Michelle) and offered hands on adjustments, she also circulated around the room and encouraged fun and play during a tough class. I arrived at 12:30 today for 12:30's class. Waited outside for ten minutes and pressed the doorbell for 4 times. No one answered. Call the staff and he said he was not there so couldn't help me, teacher can't hear it. But what about the staff at the front desk? She can't hear it? Highly doubt the teacher just didn't want to answer it because the class already began. I felt I was treated so rudely, if you don't accept late people you should open the door and tell me or tell me come earlier when I registered. Not just ignore the door bell! So it was really hot outside at noon, and I stood there trying to fix the issue for 20 minutes. No one open the door and I had to leave. read more

I started yoga lessons at Surya Jersey City at the beginning of this month. I have never taken a yoga class or thought much of it, to be honest. My perception on yoga and many associated things have changed and continue to evolve more and more. All the classes and teachers have been excellent thus far and I am inclined to continue here for a while. Two comments/ requests I would have would be :- - More unheated classes would be great. - The evening classes mostly begin by 6:30 and for folks working midtown/uptown NYC like me, it is always a dash and something a little later would be excellent. read more

My favourite is definitely Asha Rao who pays attention to every student and corrects them if if they are making even a slight mistake. She is very knowledgable and she incorporates Indian yoga traditions and wisdom in her classes. She is a humble woman and I highly recommend her classes. read more

Since I tried their new student special plan, I've been going to Surya yoga for over a year. I like trying all different styles they offer. Instructors are great, welcoming, and knowledgeable. If you are looking for challenging class, try Gagan or Rashila's. But don't get scared! Their classes are open to all level! I like the fact that Surya Yoga is expanding the yoga options within Jersey City, but it really bugs me that all of the special offers and discounts are valid only at the Hoboken studio. Free first week of yoga? Only in Hoboken. Discounted 6 month membership? Only in Hoboken. Why the special treatment for the Hoboken studio? That just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me feel that, as a non-Hoboken customer, I'm not valued. It also makes me shrug and say, "oh well. I'll go someplace else." Given that many of the yoga instructors who teach at Surya Yoga also teach at other studios and gyms throughout downtown JC (at which special discounts are available at greater frequencies) or NYC, and given that I practice yoga too often to make anything other than unlimited monthly passes economical, there's very little incentive for me to become a member at Surya. And so what would have been a 3-star rating becomes 2 stars. That being said, I've enjoyed most of the classes I've attended at Surya JC. As another reviewer noted, some instructors are not quite up to par -- not keeping time with the breath, calling out positions on auto-pilot (I'm referring to the vinyasa classes here, not Bikram) without adjusting to the rhythms of the particular group of students in the room... However, I've found a few excellent instructors as well. They tend to lead very creative sessions that are fun and that are mentally and physically challenging. As others have mentioned, the studio itself is a very nice space. It's bright, clean, and welcoming. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. The only thing about the studio space that bothers me is the heating system for the heated studio -- it is so incredibly loud when it's blowing hot air into the room that sometimes it's difficult to hear the instructor. In terms of yoga levels, I do wish that they differentiated their class levels a little more. The "all levels" class is not quite as advanced as I'd like it. At the opposite end of the spectrum, and arguably even more problematic -- there is a lack of truly beginner level classes. There's only one, as in only one class that is offered only once a week. If I were just beginning yoga, that would really frustrate me. I've attended the "level 1" class a few times when I felt like having a more mellow session, and the level 1 really isn't for true beginners. If you're going to cultivate yoga within a community, you really need to offer true beginner classes so that people can safely and confidently learn basic poses and the principles behind proper alignment and breath. Sure, a true beginner level class is going to have a high-turnover as people progress beyond the basics, but that's exactly the point. If you offer a top-quality beginner level class, you're likely to gain loyalty from a growing pool of new yogis. Long, rambling review has now come to an end. read more

He's impolite and he makes you not want to spend money to go there- I've spoken to him both in person and on the phone. I'm not experienced when it comes to Yoga, I've only ever taken a class here and there. This was my first time visiting Surya Yoga, and my first experience with Hot Yoga. I take kickboxing classes 4 to 5 mornings a week, and after taking a single class of Hot Yoga - I'm totally hooked! I think this will be a great addition to my existing workout. I felt that the Level 1 class was challenging, but doable, and I felt amazing the next morning. The instructor was very informative, and guided the class step by step. Jason Morris makes it to JC Surya Yoga !!! This is exciting news for me as I am a resident of Jersey City and have had the honor of taking Jason's classes only periodically in Hoboken when i can get there Jason is a classically trained dancer and has spent endless hours training in a variety of yoga types, from Vinyasa, to Bikram to Core work...on and on...but at the end of the day- you know he is a dancer. His classes are both magical and his intrinsic understanding and compassion for the body is unsurpassed. He also knows how to laugh at himself and play. He teaches to all levels simultaneously so you can stretch yourself if you want or if you are feeling disjointed you can modify. I always walk away from his classes feeling lighter, freer and ( i swear i can NOT dance to save my life) but i feel graceful as well...dare I say- beautiful. I absolutely love Surya Yoga Academy and all of the teachers! I was new to hot yoga this past October and this was one of the first studios I tried. I was hesitant, being that I had my spine fused from T2-T12 only a year and a half prior, but I came to find that hot yoga was exactly what my muscles needed! The Teachers have all been fabulous! Warm, welcoming, hands on... they even take time after and before class to speak with you individually. They've helped me figure out the best moves for ME and continue to help me throughout my rehabilitation. Plus, it's an amazingggg workout for your body, mind and soul! Definitely drop in for a class. So I have been going to this yoga for a few weeks now. Location: The location is convenient since I stay next to ShopRite in newport. Good for people walking because there is not much parking outside. I only went to evening classes Instructor: Out of all the classes, I really like Oniekas class because you can see she really wants to push the students to their capabilities. Jasons class is great as well. The least fave class is Jessicas evening classes. Studio: Its very small compared to the bikram yoga I have been to in NYC. But they have mirrors and blocks. Locker space is little crammed and only 2 bathrooms available in the studio. They give free towels but this one time I had some orange-ish spots on my towel. Disgusting. I realized it in the middle of my practice and I didn't want it to distract me in the middle of the session Students: Since the space is so small, everyone is very close to each other. I wish they had a sign up limit and not take numerous students for one class. One time, there was a guy next to me sweating like crazy and his sweat from dripping on my mat. That was beyond gross and I wish the studio had some rules for this. Recommendations: 1) The receptionist should be friendly and welcoming. Chit chats can go one after class and not when people are coming in and trying to sign up at the desk, 2) Have sign up limits 3) Not open doors in the middle of the class. Changes the temperature and causes distractions. 4) Clean the floors outside the studio and inside because there is sweat and hair everywhere Overall: Had it not been for some classes, I would have no visited here more than a couple of times. read more

I'm so grateful I found this studio. Coming from Southern California finding the right studio was a challenge. I prefer hot yoga. I like a sunrise class. I like my studio to be clean and smell good. Most of all I like my teachers to have verity and make a practice unique. This studio has it all. I love the uniqueness of each instructor. Kaity adds some special gifts to the Monday morning class that makes starting off the week feel like heaven. The guy that teaches has one of the best sequences I've ever experienced. This place is great. I used to go a lot until I moved. Everyone super nice (Alex at the front desk is a doll). I always went to Jess and Steven (he has a great class Saturday morn.) Jess was my all time favorite yoga instructor ever I practically seen her everyday - there is nobody like her. The place is pristine - down the the rocks in the sink (nice touch). Surya Yoga Academy is a great yoga studio. I originally bought their groupon deal for 10 classes because I wanted to start up hot yoga again. I finished that groupon and just bought the 20 pack of classes. The studio is very clean and each instructor so far has their own unique style, which I love. I usually go to Jason's morning classes on Tues and Thurs at 930am and Oneika's 10 30am class on Sundays. Both instructors are amazing and I would highly recommend their classes. I've already seem dramatic improvements in my flexibility and a shrunken belly/ waistline. Those abs are finally popping back out. This is definitely now a big part of my weekly workout routine. read more

It's definitely the place to be if you want a legit workout! $35/month for newbies and 90% of the classes are hot yoga but they have non heated classes as well. I'm a newbie to Hot Yoga and the experience at Surya cannot be beat. I found their instructor Denise to be patient and very helpful through the 75 minute yoga class which went quickly. I have had the benefit of visiting other yoga studios, but Surya has the right blend of clean and spacious facility, great instructors and accessability via PATH train or right in the heart of Jersey City Grove area if you are close to this very amazing place.. I have to admit that I'm always looking for good deals and Surya Yoga lured me in with their $50 unlimited monthly yoga pass for new members/ However, due to the challenging classes and variety of class times, I committed to the 30 class plan. What I liked: The studio is well maintained, and they have several class offerings after work. The classes are pretty small (usually about 10 people) and I feel that I get personal attention. While you can make reservations in advance, I have never had any problems just dropping in. The heated room definitely helps me sink deeper into the poses and I usually feel a bit sore (in a good way) the next day. What might not be for everyone: The unheated yoga is in a separate room which is pretty small and doesn't have a mirror. While the instructor was helpful -- I think you could find a cheaper class at other JC studios. As other reviewers have pointed out, most of the classes are mixed levels which might be intimidating for a beginner. read more

I was so excited when this studio opened as there are only a couple more choices in the neighborhood for hot yoga. I have been visiting Surya now for a couple months and absolutely love this studio! The first time student specials are brilliant, great value for money and the monthly memberships are extremely reasonable if you intend to practice regularly. The studio itself is spacious, modern and always clean. I have taken classes with many of the instructors and have no complaints! I have always left feeling that i just got a good work out/sweat in. My favorite classes are with Steven and Jessica as they introduce more advanced poses and variations. Since opening they have also introduced some early morning classes which is a real bonus for the NYC commuters (myself included) Since joining Surya I have toned up and feel much stronger, I definitely intend to remain a regular at this studio - thanks! read more

I am visiting Surya Yoga exclusively for prenatal/postnatal yoga classes and it has been great so far. I tried few prenatal classes in the area prior to coming to Surya Yoga and I was quite annoyed with other places. I was just about to give up on the idea of mama yoga, but my friend recommended me Surya Yoga Prenatal Classes. After the moment I found them I haven't missed a class because it is so good! Instructors May Lane & Sarah Marsh are extremely knowledgeable/professional and they know exactly how to treat pregnant women's body. They are very attentive and prior to each class they would make sure they know each student's pains/aches and would adjust exercises to help to release these tensions. Also, they both are mothers themselves and can always give you an advice on any baby/mama topic. It is sad that Surya Yoga studio doesn't promote prenatal class enough so mama's as myself can't easily find them. The only regret I have is that I haven't found them earlier in my pregnancy and wasted money and time on places which were nowhere near as good as Surya's ( May & Sarah) classes. read more
