I normally hate leaving negative reviews, but this haircut looks so atrocious that I feel like people need to be warned. I came in a few days ago hoping for just a trim and some face-framing pieces but left with insanely uneven hair and full-on bangs that I didn't want. My first red flag should've been when Susanna didn't seem to understand what curtain bangs were when I asked, but I dismissed it because there was somewhat of a language barrier. I went on to explain that they're pieces meant for face framing and volume, and she told me "if that's what you want, that won't look good. This is what will look good." She then proceeded to directly cut bangs before I had the chance to respond. When I stopped her and explained I absolutely did not want bangs in front of my eyes, she cut the pieces in front of my eyes shorter to "solve the problem." In the moment, I was overwhelmed, so I paid and left in a hurry. Over the last few days, however, those around me have unfortunately pointed out and helped me truly realize how awful the hair is. Not only did Susanna cut bangs without my consent, but my hair is also ridiculously uneven all around. I've had to go as far as to change my hair color in an attempt to minimize the visual damage. When I brought this to her over the phone, she agreed and promised to fully refund me, only to ignore me afterward. I ended up texting her to check in and show her images of how awful the hair looks, and she tried to gaslight me into thinking this is what I asked for. Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions of what I can do, both in terms of the hair and refund. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. read more

Terrible. Made me come all the way knowing I was coming in for a 2 year old haircut, and then when I get there tells me she's not sure she can do it, and it'll be good only if kid holds perfectly still?! Didn't seem confident - older lady and even older salon (infrastructure and instruments looked right out of 1960s). I have been going to Susanna's for 15 years and she is always pleasant and accommodating. She does a good job on my hair cuts. I like a pixie cut. She also cut my son's hair from age 7-17. we are always happy. Like most beauticians it is always best to show a photo of what you want before the cosmetologist starts cutting. Susanna also rents out chairs to other beauty practitioners as well. Saturdays are very busy. read more

I can't speak to the quality of hair cutting/coloring/etc. here, because I was seeing someone who simply rents a chair in the establishment, but I *can* speak to the environment. First, I noticed that things seemed really dirty compared to other salons I've visited. There was hair all over the floor, and I noticed that it was in two different colors (short snips of black hair and longer snips of blond), so apparently from two different customers. I did see Susanna sweep once while I was there (immediately after she'd cut someone's hair), so it does happen upon occasion, but it had obviously been a while. And the cover-up that was placed over me was really grungy-looking, covered in lint/fluff, as if it had been stored in the bottom of someone's closet for a couple years. I really didn't want it touching me, to be honest. But what made me decide to write this review was the unprofessional behavior of Susanna herself, who became angry with the woman working on my hair (we'll call her G) because she was taking too long and asking Susanna to stay late, after closing time, so that she could finish the job. I can understand why this might make someone angry, but Susanna literally *yelled* at G while a customer (me) was stuck sitting there in the middle of it with a head covered in dye and no way to escape the situation. She yelled quite a lot, in fact, making me extremely uncomfortable. I could completely understand why she was upset and sympathize with her, but she should have spoken to G privately, instead of subjecting a customer to that kind of unprofessional behavior. read more

What was I thinking??? I am tempted to give Susanna two stars as she is very nice and I blame myself a great deal for going there. With my hair and service needed I really should have gone to a professional salon and not a corner hair cutter. My only excuse is that I was tempted to try her out given all the 5 star reviews, the proximity, as well as looking to save some money... Before (or see picture): I had very long, natural blonde hair with fine, subtle highlights to create a "sun touched" effect. Service: - Cut: "Please cut 1-2 inches with very little layering to refresh my hair cut and get rid of potential damaged ends." - Color: "Fresh highlights as the old ones are growing out. But only the grown out part in order to not damage my hair too much. I am happy with the color of the lengths, so please apply the same color that I already have. Please make very fine, thin highlights. As you can see I like it very natural looking, etc." After (or see picture): - Cut: A disaster. My hair is around 10 inches shorter. An uneven cut is a dramatic understatement. The left is a few inches longer than the right. No transitions but lots of odd looking cut out "holes" and "steps". Reminds me a bit of a kid trying to cut her sister's hair. (Again, I was an idiot playing with my mobile instead of closely watching her). - Color: Not sure what is worse - the color or the cut? Front and back are completely different with the front being very light and the back having almost the color I had before I walked in. The "blonde" is a very cheap looking, yellowish blonde. Highlights are very broad and randomly (not in a good way) applied. - Blow drying: When I mumbled in shock something like "I do not like it" she tried to make it look better with blow drying it over a round brush. Here now I am really surprised - even a corner hair cutter should be able to do a decent blow dry. Not that this would have mattered in my situation - I am just mentioning it. Btw, the picture was taken by my completely shocked boyfriend right after I came home. - Price: $85 excluding tip. I have absolutely no idea what made me give her $10 tip. I guess I was really under shock, paid $95, and rushed out of her salon. Happy End: Fortunately there is a happy end to this story: I went to another salon (Keter) one day later (still weekend) and they fit me in despite being busy as I needed a very good salon to fix this disaster. I explained that I cannot go to work like this and that I need emergency help and they did a fantastic job. Yes, my hair is of course a lot shorter now but I have a wonderful hair cut and look overall great. :) read more

Came here for blonde highlights/haircut a month ago. Susanna's such a cool woman! Throughout the entire process, she was very lively and made me feel cared about. She not only made really good suggestions for my hair throughout the entire appointment - she also made very good conversation with me and was just an overall very friendly woman. (disclaimer: I personally enjoy when I'm able to have good conversation with a hairstylist because there's nothing else to do besides watch your hair get cut) I was super happy with how my hair turned out. The first time I got my hair highlighted, the stylist only did it with strips of aluminum. Though it turned out okay, there were parts that I wish were colored more. Susanna was different - she used a special cap for hair highlighting that resulted in greater coverage of my hair in blonde. And it was super fast! It didn't take long at all to dye my hair, which I really appreciated. When I need to get my hair colored more and I'm in Berkeley, I'm definitely coming back here! read more

Fast, good and cheap. I attempted to cut my bangs myself and quickly realized the error of my ways. I called Susanna's and got an appointment the next morning. She not only made my bangs look great but gave me an over all trim and layered my hair to give it more volume and texture. This was all done in about 20 minutes. My cut was $14. You really cannot beat it. Susanna is also very friendly and warm. Definitely a no-frills kind of place, but really, why spend 5x's more for fluff? Highly recommended. read more

I used to walk up to Supercuts on Ashby, but there's just something more appealing about a local shop vs. the big corporate barbershop. Susanna is the only one who has cut my hair, although I would have no problem letting others give it a whack. This is a very comfortable and quiet spot, right at the heart of an otherwise busy area. I won't go anywhere else until such time that I leave the South Berkeley area. The decor lacks, and when I go it always smells like fresh cooked rice.
