Serene little spot in the Catskills of upstate New York. Perfect place to enjoy nature on the trails or on their surprisingly large lake. My girlfriend and I spent a few hours here on a Sunday afternoon in May. If you rent a boat you can keep it out as long as you want, and you have access to the whole property for the entire day. We spent awhile in kayaks and had the whole lake to ourselves for the entire time. We then spent some time down at the swimming hole and had that to ourselves as well. Oh what a magical experience. My boyfriend Tom and I kayaked the lake that the owner Jim so kindly advised us of all the animal population. Birds, turtles, fish, beaver dams. It was so wonderful we came back a second day, and took use of the grounds by the swimming hole. You truly felt like you were on another planet. It was amazing and will revisit! read more

Our family loved the tranquility and natural beauty of kayaking here; the youngest in our party was 4, the oldest was 70, and without exception, we all had a wonderful time. After kayaking, we ate lunch at the lakeside picnic tables (shaded under generous trees), and walked around the extensive grounds afterwards. This was the unexpected highlight of our afternoon-- the grounds are just absolutely beautiful. Careful landscaping and wildflowers alike complement each other throughout to create a perfect setting for a family stroll. We couldn't dreamt up a better spot to spend our day. read more

So I didn't see any pheasants during my time at Susan's Pleasant Pheasant Farm, but it was perfectly pleasant! Kayaking was the name of our game. Once our group paid and signed waivers, and after dousing ourselves in sunscreen and bug spray, it was time to hit the water. I have absolutely zero kayaking experience, but it was a cinch to get started since a staffer holds the kayak steady for you on a gravel shore area of Lake Wawaka. Then you're off, with only your arms and a paddle to help you along. The lake was quite calm, and it was easy to maneuver around, though I did end up in the aquatic plants from time to time. Keep an eye out for the wildlife; I spotted egrets, herons, and fish. The mountains were such a perfect backdrop. Ah, nature! After the kayaking, all of us took a short walk to the swimming hole part of the farm, and it was a nice spot for a picnic. We all rented single person kayaks, but two person kayaks are also available. Cash and credit cards are accepted. There is no bathroom but a porta-potty is located in the parking lot. If you need lodging, there's a cute mini-B&B right next to the lake, complete with water wheel. Hope to return someday! read more

It's hard to imagine that a business actually has a mini lake that's long enough to explore for an hour or two in the middle of the mountains, but this place has it. If I just read the name of the business, I would have disregarded this as an activity since it says "Pheasant" farm. However, one of the people in our group mentioned kayaking and as there was not much else to do aside from hiking and ziplining or driving an hour towards Albany, we jumped on this. The rates are $50 for tandem and $35 for single for as long as you want. This was a great deal considering it wasn't too busy for the weekend right before July 4th. There's also canoeing and paddle boating which we didn't try. We called in advance to make sure they were open and were told there was no one on the waters yet. I was a little sad when I saw people half an hour upon arrival but the space was big enough that you don't really notice others around you much. The owners were very friendly. We were having some trouble with the card machine and they let us pay after we had finished. I must say I was beyond surprised. If you have time and need a little R&R, make sure to stop by for a visit. P.S. the water does not appear clear but I think this is just how nature is; it is not because it's dirty. The water was a similar color as that at Kaaterskill Falls. The dirt has a reddish tone to it hence the color, I think. Don't quote me as I'm just a city girl. read more

Susan and Jim were just wonderful people and their B&B was beautiful, clean, & amazing. I'm grateful that they share this B&B experience with others. Lake- It sits right on the Wawaka Lake which is feed by the East Branch Delaware River. The lake is very calm and was easy for beginner Kayakers like us. We paddled slowly in the early morning, not make much noise and we saw tons of wildlife. During the day, they rent out the kayaks to others, so you share the lake from 9-5, but outside of the times, the lake is yours. That was the biggest selling point to us. Not too many places that offer kayaking on a private lake. Room- The huge picture windows of our room, held views of the lake and we sat outside in the evening drinking wine, just watching the wildlife in the lake. We saw Blue Heron & Kingfisher birds fishing the evening away and while Kayaking we saw beavers going into their dam. Food- Susan cooked up a refreshing breakfast, with local fruits & buckwheat pancakes, she is truly an amazing chef! She will ask you if you have any dietary restrictions, so don't worry about that. Hiking Trails- Trails looked awesome, and there is even a swimming hole.We didn't get to go far because it started raining, but looked great. Saw a spotted fawn and momma deer. Next time I hope we can do more hiking, Jim had the lawns cut to perfection for well groomed hiking. I guess it goes way back on the property. I would say bring bug spray if you plan on doing that. Bike Rentals- You can also ride antique bikes around the area, which felt like a scene from an old movie. I can't explain it but just seemed like a historic little town. The whole experience blew away my expectations and it was the true meaning of peace and relaxation! The price of the B&B stay includes, overnight stay, breakfast and all rentals free. read more

I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. I was staying in Phoenicia for a few days, and looking for a place to rent a kayak. We didn't want to go on the Hudson River and were looking for a place where we could be in a quiet space with wildlife and have a relaxing paddle. We arrived to an incredibly nice staff that told us.... "the time limit was until you stop having fun". We were impressed by the clarity and cleanliness of the lake/river that we paddled in. They had a lot of land to explore if you want to stay the whole day. We went on a short walk on their property down a path and to a swimming hole. We didn't swim there, but sat at a picnic table and watched the river go by. There were no other people there, so it was very private and quiet. We saw a few people on the lake, but at moments, were there completely alone with the mountains, herons, frogs, and wetlands. I would go back here for sure. And possibly even stay there. It was so nice to meet such kind people in the woods and to feel so accepted and happy about being trusted out in the wildlife alone. read more

A beautiful spot, where you can rent kayaks (1-2 person), canoes, or stand up paddle boards for a flat fee (we paid 35 dollars each for two single kayaks) and keep them out on the river for as long as you'd like. It is possible to paddle quite a long ways up river (but against very gentle currents) and then back with lots of privacy and fantastic views of the surrounding Catskills. Susan and her husband run the place and clearly have a deep love for their little slice of paradise. I can only thank them for sharing it with us for an afternoon! I had a great time kayaking here with some friends last weekend. The lake is a good size - a couple miles long, I think, and you can wander around investigating wildlife and little islands There are a lot of turtles, tadpoles, and a pair of herons to spot. It's mellow and really nice. Lots of wild flowers too and pretty Catskills views. The staff are helpful and full of info. I highly recommend. read more

Amazing place! Everyone working there (the couple that owns it and the young woman working there for the summer) were great and super helpful. The owners of this lake are the most gracious people you'll ever meet! I've been here 3 times and there are always plenty of kayaks available. You get to kayak on a massive lake with a few turns which was really peaceful and relaxing. We also had access to their swimming hole which was so much fun! I stayed here a few years ago. I have been to about 5 or 6 B&Bs in my life, and this is definitely my favorite! Nice, comfy, antique decor without being stuffy or feeling like you are going to break something. The views are incredible and you can kayak in the pond or go hiking! When we came upstate for a Memorial Day vacation we were planning on going kayaking, we quickly learned this is the best place to go for it, when you get there you are quickly welcomed with a beautiful lake and waterfall by the bridge. Soon you go to a tent to ask for the amount of kayaks you can get(or paddle boards.) Susan's Pleasant Pheasant Farm offered a great selection of kayaks and everybody there was so helpful in getting us a kayak. When we finally got on the water the scenery is beautiful, slowly paddling your way throughout the river, the sweet silence of you and your kayak makes you feel very welcome throughout the ride, I do recommend that you wear a bathing suit because you can get very wet from the paddle.
