We (two adults and two young kids) rented a canoe and a double kayak on the Croton River on a beautiful fall day. It was a wonderful slice of nature, which looked and felt a lot more remote than It was (there was a bit of highway noise on the lower half of the river). The equipment was in great shape, and the staff helpful and friendly. We went close to high tide, and were able to make it about a mile and a half before the river became too shallow. The staff member said one could do that in about 45 minutes, but with kids, an hour was more reasonable. The two and a half hour rental was a perfect amount of time, as that allowed us to proceed leisurely, explore some of the little nooks on the edge of the river, and take time for the all important snack break. All in all this was a wonderful experience, and we all can't wait to do it again. read more

Between a 3 and 4 on this spot. Overall super easy to get too, overall easy process to secure your rental. Even easier if you book online ahead of time. You must wear a mask entering the beach and kayak rental area. The actual area to Kayak is not expansive, but nice. Just a bit off put by the price all said and done. $10 to park, +$40 to rent a single kayak and then if you want to sit on the beach after it's $4. I think if there was a combo parking/ beach or kayak/ beach fee wouldn't of felt like I was being nickel And dimed. read more

Overall we had a lot of fun on the Sleepy Hollow Kayak Tour and would come back and rent from this company again. Our guide Steve was great and it was exhilarating to find we were capable of kayaking on the Hudson as beginners. Next time I might try Tarrytown Lakes for calmer water and independent rentals by the hour. Before you depart, make sure you are well fitted to your kayak. I was somewhat uncomfortable in my kayak, so next time I need to see if a different size would be better, or perhaps the back support could be adjusted or modified, because I ended up with an aching back that night. It was also a longer trip than expected - it was supposed to be 2 hours but ended up being 3, and I think that was a little long for me physically (but I do appreciate the staff trying to give us the full amount of time to make up for some unexpected delays). If I do another tour on the Hudson, I will get a tandem kayak, so my partner can give me a break from paddling from time to time. It started off cold and ended up freezing. We definitely got wet, and the waves and wind got stronger on the way back. Wish I had worn a windbreaker. One person had waterproof pants and that seemed smart. However a couple of people did tip over and fall in, and in that case there's not much you can do about being soaked. I do wish we had been able to take pictures, and maybe in the future I would venture to take out my phone in a dry bag that can float, or in a waterproof case somehow secured to my lifejacket. But do be careful, as one person lost their phone and it was really sad. :( read more

The kayak tour was so much fun! Steve and Dylan were very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. You can take the Metro north to Sleepy Hollow station and walk to the meeting point in 5-10 minutes. It's very easy to get to from NYC. This is my second time renting from Hudson River Recreation. Each time they have been friendly and accommodating. This last time we rented nine kayaks, all of which were ready when we arrived. We picked up our kayaks just off the Croton-Harmon train station and kayaked for 40 minutes to a great swimming spot, took a dip for an hour, and kayaked back. It was a perfect way to spend a hot afternoon. read more

I spotted some kayakers on the Tarrytown Reservoir one day while driving home, and I just knew that I HAD to do it. It is a breeze to make reservations/pay online beforehand, or you can also just show up day of and pay for your rentals there. I don't think there is a discount for making reservations online, but it is nice to know that you will have your kayak/paddles waiting for you when you arrive! Although the website states that their rentals end on Labor Day weekend, they actually continue rentals as long as the weather permits. So keep an eye their calendar to check the availability of rentals in your part of town! The two gentlemen who helped us out when we arrived at the reservoir were really friendly, and gave us a thorough lesson about how to use our paddles and what to look out for when we were on the water. They also gave us an extra 15minutes on the water because we were their only reservations for the day, yay! :) Although I thought the rentals were quite pricey ($20/hr for a kayak and $30/hr for an SUP), it is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning if you are looking for a relaxing outdoor activity! read more

My friends and I went for a sunset river tour with Steve L. and had a blast. He was friendly and informative, and made sure everyone understood the safety rules before heading out onto the water. I will definitely be returning next summer to explore more of the Hudson. Pro tip: Make sure you read the FAQ and wear appropriate clothes - no jeans or sweats. You will get wet and you don't want to be bogged down or soggy. There are restrooms where you can change and lockers where you can stash your stuff. Also, Horsefeathers in Tarrytown is a fun place to eat afterwards. After 2 hours of paddling, you will be hungry! read more

Summer weekends are my favorite using this company! I have been to every location, the staff has always been very accommodating- they also have a very extensive knowledge about the area I am kayaking through. Always have a beautiful view and never have to worry because I am always taken care of by the staff! They send people out to check in and make sure you aren't stuck anywhere, they do tours which is an awesome experience and I have even seen some staff members pulling children who have gotten tired in their kayaks with their kayaks! Friendly people, a great time, and reasonably priced! I would 10/10 recommend for anyone who is looking for some warm weather fun! Went on a sunset cruise with two of the guides and a small group of kayakers in early July 2018. Beginners would enjoy this kind of short trip. Guide Steve and his colleague were very helpful and in particular, gave special attention to safety concerns and proper way to paddle during the on-land orientation. On the water, they also checked in periodically with each person to make sure they were comfortable and not getting tired. We were even fortunate enough to hit the tide going out when we were outbound, and the tide coming back in when we were a bit tired. The scenery at sunset, looking across the Hudson to the bluffs, was awesome. I cannot commend the guides and this company enough for their care and attention and efforts to make this a fun outdoor experience. read more

If you're like me, you loathe being in the city on the summer weekends when it's hot and humid, and that's why I was excited to find Hudson River Recreation. I reserved a single recreational kayak (which means you sit on top of the kayak and your legs are in front of you versus the kayak where just your upper body is exposed). Approximately an hour away on the Metro North to the Croton-Harmon stop, and you're there. You have to walk about a mile from the train station to the dock. Ryan (and his team) were super helpful and chill, which is just what you want coming from all the stress in the city. The round trip train fare was $20 and the 2-hour rental was $30 but for peace of mind, it's definitely worth it. You have 3 choices of where you can ride the kayak and I opted for the Croton River which was very pretty but be forewarned that sometimes the water is super low (which is why I felt kind of funny wearing a life jacket but still did). I would highly recommend trying this. It's a nice escape out of the city and you get a great workout paddling (I think it burns 500+ calories in 2 hours but don't quote me). Word of advice: I would recommend reserving a kayak before you go which you can do online at their website. I did see some people arrive without reservations and they did have to wait for an available kayak. read more

Signed up for the StandUp Paddleboarding InstucTour. My instructor was Jason whom was very confident, knowledgable and just plain chill! He explained every likely situation, never rushed me and even demonstrated a fall. Since there was a Festival at croton point we used the kayak launch @ croton river which is a two minute drive (from croton point). The day was beautiful and down the river was a completely different experience from the pkwy with passing cars above. The cost of the InstucTour included the rental which made it reasonably priced in my book. In addition, Staff was friendly and the place was very busy with a huge line for rentals and classes. read more

Visited the croton river location for a double kayak rental for 2 hours - $50 with no reservation. Staff were friendly and the process for renting was very simple and straightforward. Drivers license, waiver, and that's it. They have a place to store car keys so you don't have to take them in the water. The river itself is incredible, and stretches out as far as you are willing to kayak back. Parking is free. I recommend reserving just to guarantee that you will get a kayak at your desired time. I would knock off 0.5 stars because they didn't have change when I paid, that said they were willing to go out an get change and had it ready for us when we returned. Alternatively, if you're paying by credit card that won't be an issue. Would definitely come back again. read more

I went to every location all last Summer a bunch of times. Great price for the time they give you. Nice people working there. Usually good availability, never a super long wait if kayaks are out. They do answer the phone when you call and tell you availability. Croton Point Park and Kingsland Point Park you must pay a fee to park your car. I must try the tour soon. read more
