    Japanese curry with vegetables
    Rebecca F.

One of the better (and cozier) sushi restaurants in Victoria. Sushi Field is located in the Fairfield Plaza and is just a tiny hole in the wall. It's small, but as I said, it's very cozy. We had dinner here and shared a few appies before our main dishes arrived. We had agedashi tofu, 100 year rolls, gyoza, miso soup, veggie inari rolls, steamed rice, and two Japanese curry bowls. Everything tasted great except for our curry bowls. The curry was bland and in need of some salt. Other than that, the rest was amazing.

    Kumamoto ramen, nigiri etc...

Very fresh and a great sashimi selection. I'd eat here again for sure. Place is small so plan for takeout

Really good sushi and great service! The Hawaii roll is super good especially if you add shrimp tempura to it.

The only thing they said was the food isn't ready and would be longer - they were not apologetic in any way (I had preordered the food more than 3 hours in advance), I had also asked for cutlery for 3 and was provided with 2. Other guests came into the restaurant too and were not greeted nor acknowledged. They were chatting amongst each other about how it's odd multiple servers came by and yet no one was able to assist them but the hostess who was nowhere to be found... I'll be back...but only because the food is excellent.

Aside from the standard otoro and chutoro from blue fin tuna, they also had toro cuts from hamachi and albacore. I had to try all the toro cuts and actually I landed on the chutoro being my preferred belly sashimi. The bite of the night however went to the uni sashimi which can always be hit or miss. It was probably some of the best and fresh tasting uni I have had! The hamachi sashimi was also a stand out and actually tasted better than the hamachi toro. Service was actually pretty great and their suggestions (which included the uni) were spot on. Definitely need to branch out to the wagyu next time!

They have a few tables and only one was occupied when I arrived and only a couple people got takeout while I was there. It's not a place you come to for the ambiance. However, the sushi rolls were excellent. My wife had numerous questions which were answered promptly and knowledgably. Our salads (Seaweed and Green) were both excellent. The green salad had a few different types of lettuce, baby spinach, cucumber, avacado, and a very tasty dressing. I was impressed because it wasn't the typical "sushi place" salad I'm used to. The spicy tuna roll was certainly spicy and fresh. The Rock & Roll was amazing. The seared, chopped scallops on top were a great addition to the cucumber, avocado, crab meat, and sauce. The Washington Roll was a little similar with cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat inside, but the fresh salmon on top was delicious. The Awesome Roll again was similar with the cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat inside, but cooked salmon on top, with crispy yam strands on top of that. Excellent presentation and taste. I was a little concerned about trying the place because it had five stars, but not many reviews, and none recent. I'm happy I tried it and recommend it to the locals and visitors as well. (I was visiting Victoria from the US.)

Everything we ordered tasted great - the cocktails, appetizers, main course, and dessert. Our plates were scraped clean. There was one minor glitch, and it wasn't her fault - the bar had run out of one of the ingredients in the cocktail my son ordered, so he ordered a different one. After my son finished his drink, the maître d' came by with a complementary cocktail to make up for the one they could not make. This is our fourth visit, and we will surely keep coming back to Marilena. We highly recommended this establishment.

Our bartender Cole was fantastic, so incredibly friendly and always checking in on us even with the busy load at the bar. Our waitress on a separate occasion, I believe her name was Frances, also incredibly kind and amiable. The rainbow roll, marilena roll, and dynamite roll were delicious, the quality of the fish was incredible. The prawns to split amongst the table were my favorite part of the night, accompanied by a savory beige white sauce (can't remember if it was tahini or hummus) that complimented the marinated prawns wonderfully. The spring salmon was super buttery and flavorful in its respective soy emulsion. The chocolate molten lava cake with the cherry ice cream however was insane!!! Both desserts managed to be airy in nature, the cherry packing a wonderfully tart flavor without tasting artificial. If you're a fan of dark chocolate, you will most definitely enjoy this cake. A must visit for a special occasion in the Victoria area.
