Sushi was delicious and affordable at approximately 1$/piece. Great selection, good place to go for a quick cheap good binge. They also offered all sorts of main dishes and sides and sashimi but we only had sushi and miso soup. Miso soup is very good for only 3$. Mixed bag experience. The miso soup was great, and the plate of edamame was substantial. Score one for the appetizer. We went with a sashimi platter (three pieces of salmon, surf clam, octopus, tuna and I think also tuna?) which was very good in terms of freshness, but a bit skimpy in terms of slice size/thickness. TIP!!! Make a reservation because this place can get pretty packed. One of the best sushi places that I've been to in my LIFE. My boyfriend isn't the biggest fan of seafood, but knows I love sushi. He decided to surprise me and take me here for dinner - and it was sooooooo good. It definitely has become one of my favorite places in Victoria, BC. I've had pretty much all the sushi here except for maybe all the rolls, but everything I've tried has been so good I'm sure everything on the menu is great. Green tea is totally worth it for only $1, they give you an entire pot of tea. The service staff is so friendly, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very inviting. I kept on hearing good things about this place so me and my boyfriend tried it out. Instantly regretted it. We ordered the venison tataki. Which is is supposed to be seared deer, but when we got it it was drenched in sauce and the meat while seared on the outside for some reason was frozen. We think they seared it then just keep it frozen. It was such a bad start that we should've known was a clue to leave. The tataki was just so off that I could only have two pieces and my boyfriend tried to finish it. The two rolls he got were decent enough and the nigiri combination plate I got wasn't that good. If you want authentic and delicious sushi, sashimi, and Japanese food, this is the place to go. We had the smoked duck appetizer to start, and my god, it was by far the best duck I've ever had. Next was the sushi and sashimi. I've lived in Japan, and let me tell you, coming back to the states to eat sushi is like enjoying a proper grilled cheese sandwich, then being forced to eat Hot Pockets. It's just not the same. This place has fresh fish that's melt-in-your-mouth soft. The salmon was incredible, the unagi and tuna rolls were flavorful and delicate, and the prices are absurdly cheap! You'd pay double for half the quality down in the states. Plus the staff is actually Japanese, which is an automatic plus in my book. Overall, I wish I'd stayed on Victoria longer. I grew up on sushi. Let me be specific - inari and futomaki and handpressed rice balls made by my father and his friends are deeply ingrained in my memories of summer. I don't care about the newest trends in sushi, I don't care about fancy decor, I don't really even care about a variety of choices. I want perfect sushi rice, perfect nori, and fresh fish (if I order fish). I want my inari perfectly stuffed with just the right amount of sweetness. I want the vegetables to be either fresh or perfectly pickled. I am picky, just maybe not the way a typical sushi lover is. This restaurant fulfills everything I want, and expect. Came over to the island for work and was craving some Japanese. A little Google and Yelp search landed me at one of 'the best sushi' in Victoria. Mislead. I came here to be disappointed. On the menu was tempura udon. With frozen store bought udon readily available, I thought any monkey could make a decent bowl. Negative. The 'broth' was salty and had no other elements. I would even suspect it came from a powdered packet somewhere and added hot water. The batter on the tempura wasn't bad (I didn't say good either) and the value for the basket they gave you was generous. I give them that. However, everything could use a little more seasoning. Next up was Salmon / Tuna sashimi: something about the cut that didn't leave me ecstatic, a lil mushy at times... not sure if it is just really fresh fish... Wow. Ok. I hate to do this. I was really looking for a good sushi restaurant and this place had amazing reviews. I took a look at the menu and I wasn't too impressed but decided to go anyways. We were served quickly, efficiently, and very politely. The man serving the tables tonight was very friendly and warming. He was the highlight of the visit. The menu made it feel inauthentic. I was excited to get Agedashi tofu and maybe gomae, but the appetizer list labelled them as deep fried tofu and green salad. I don't even know if they had gomae, or what the green salad was as I decided not to order it. Their roll menu was very underwhelming. Not many, if any at all, special or exotic rolls. It's always exciting to try something new and it's what usually makes me come back to specific restaurants, but this place had none of that. We ordered the spider roll, the (I think it's called) ebi cheese roll, and the unakyu roll. The ebi cheese roll was unappetizing. Falling apart and colder than I expected. The spider roll and unakyu roll was decent, I didn't mind them. Overall, it was mediocre, and their portions were on the small side. Especially for ~$9 a roll. I was very disappointed. I've been to other, better sushi restaurants in town so I'm not sure why this place is so popular. I don't recommend. Save yourself the trip. read more

I am really surprised the reviews are so good for this place. The service was mediocre, but the food was less than mediocre. The salmon sashimi was cut jaggedly, looked like leftover scraps of the fish. Our dynamite role was so thin and meager that it was falling apart. The beds of rice for our nigiri pieces were all so small, that it barely provided a bite full. Perhaps those people giving it five stars think it is a cute place to sit, which it is--the exterior and style of the inside are what brought us in... But sushi is a simple dish, so presentation, style, cuts of the fish, amount and placing of rice, the thickness of a roll-- all of that matters, a lot. That's half the enjoyment. read more

I've lived in Victoria for about a year now, and I've been on the search for the best sushi. I can say with no reservations that Ebizo is my absolute favorite. It's not extra-fancy, or even extra-cheap, or all-you-can eat, or anything gimmicky... It's just really fresh fish really well prepared by chefs who obviously know what they're doing. I never really write reviews, but this place makes me so angry I had to share my experience with you all. It was our first time here and for sure it will be the last time too. We ordered some nigiri and sushi rolls to go. When we opened the container, we realized the quality and the size of the sushi were not up to standard at all. The nigiri were exceptionally tiny, almost to a ridiculous point. They are literally the size of my guy friend's pinky... Although the sushi rolls were in a decent size, they were falling apart. For those of you who loves good sushi know a good sushi roll shouldn't be falling apart when you pick it up. The taste and quality were below average. On top of that, the male owner (or the manager) was giving off a really bad attitude when we were making our orders in the restaurant. So rude that it ruined all our mood and appetite. If you are expecting customer services, you will be disappointed. I mean why go here just to try and even get a slightest chance to ruin your evening! Ebizo knows how to do sushi. I have been to many sushi joints in Victoria, and Ebizo is well worth the price (which is reasonable). The restaurant is small and intimate, making the TV behind the bar seem larger than it should be. That is until you realize that it's playing baseball almost all the time and then it seems right at home in this Japanese restaurant. The staff seemed humble and let the food do the talking. The tekka don bowl has generous amounts of tuna, perfectly prepared, which melt in your mouth. The rice is seasoned just enough. Vegetable tempura was crisp, flavourful and not at all greasy. An excellent balance between the taste of the tempura batter and the large slices of vegetables. We showed up with a relatively large group (7) with no notice, but the front staff quickly accomodated us and made us feel welcome. Oh, and the spicy tuna? Spicy and fresh and the rice was NOT ice cold! We will go back. read more

Best sushi we had during our holiday in BC and Alberta. It was fantastic! It was spey busy on a Friday night, but after a short wait we got seats at the bar. The service was very friendly and the sushi chef also chatted to us and checked if we liked the sushi and sashimi he had prepared for us. I think he could tell from our happy faces how much we did. I have never had sushi with such generous portions of fish. The tuna and salmon sashimi were my favourite, the rainbow roll was a dream come true and the spider roll with soft shell crab was great, as was the salmon roll. If we would live in Victoria, we would come here several times a week. read more

Ebizo is definitely one of the best sushi places in Victoria. Their tuna tataki is phenomenal and always leaves me wishing I had another order of it to follow up the first one, and the veggie tempura is excellent. Their rolls are top-notch (I usually end up ordering either tuna, smoked salmon and avocado, or eel), and I have no clue what Deb was talking about when she accused the spicy tuna roll of not being spicy, because I practically had flames coming out of my mouth by the time I was halfway through my second roll. The service is usually pretty efficient (although a bit impersonal - I kind of get the impression that the servers are attempting to be almost invisible), genmaicha tea (green tea with pieces of toasted rice) is served right away, and the hot towels before the food arrives are a nice touch. My two gripes with this place are: 1) The TV, always tuned into sports of some type, behind the sushi bar - I think this takes away from the authenticity of the experience and cheapens the place a bit. Save the TV for the sports bar, this is a sushi restaurant! 2) Some of the tables have those awkward bench seats where there's no way to get to the seat on the far side without climbing over the opposite bench. This isn't really an issue if you're wearing pants, but... just try swinging your legs gracefully over that bench seat wearing a tight pencil skirt and high heels while your male coworkers look on, and you'll start wishing for better seating options too. read more

Even some of our nigiri pieces were clearly prepared ahead of time and refrigerated. This is the same issue I have with grocery stores who sell sushi--the rice is not supposed to be ice cold! And don't even get me started about the spicy tuna roll...they need to rename it the mayonnaise roll! No spice and lots of icky white mayo. We came here on a recommendation from our hotel. The rolls we got - in particular the rainbow roll - were what we would have called double rolls, with so much fish over the top & within the rolls that they were nearly falling apart when we would pick them up. It turns out there is a covert secret menu at work here, so read my review carefully. Miso soup with clams. Nope, it's not on the menu, but for an extra buck you can turn an ordinary miso favorite into something different. If you're not sure what you want from the roll menu, ask for the Riki Roll. It is a tempura prawn roll topped with avocado, salmon, tuna... An extra large delight for under a ten spot. Regrettably, neither I, nor my table mates ordered the tempura prawns and vegetable, but after seeing it go to another table I wish I had. It's the best I've ever seen, and if it's anything like our meal I'm sure it's taste ranked up there. More than the secret menu was enjoyed tonight and may I suggest the Spider roll and the Unakyu (BBQ eel) roll, truly delish. My last suggestion for Ebizo is make a reservation, the place filled up pretty quickly. read more

First day of December! Ran across the street for an "early" lunch around 11:30 and was pleasantly surprised to find the place close to empty. The three of us sat at the sushi bar and were promptly served. PROS: + Green Tea: included with the meal and has great green tea flavor along with hints of roasted barley; delicious, or as the Japanese say, "oishi"! + Sashimi: fresh as can be, large portions, ridiculously low prices -- only $2 a slice for fatty tuna ("toro")!! + Spicy pork ramen: good spicy flavor, chewy handmade ramen noodles; wish they had more sliced green onions though CONS: - The space is small and fills up fast by lunchtime on weekdays. Walked in during a busy lunch with just two people and they told us to try again next time with a reservation - Although I enjoyed the ramen, I did notice that the broth didn't seem to have a rich enough miso base like I'm used to from all the ramen shops back in California I'll have to be back to try more items on the menu as today was just a simple lunch. 1st of all, sorry for poor picture, but I was really dissapointed at the presentation of my meal. I ordered prawn tempura for a starter and was given some over fried tastless sticks that had a tail. My rain ow roll came later and was basically colorless. My god, this is suppose to be Victorias premier sushi house now ???
