Last night there were only two of us, and the restaurant was less than half full. Service was slow, though we weren't rushed, so that wasn't a major issue. What stood out was that no one checked on our table or asked whether we wanted dessert or coffee. My main disappointment, however, was the $36 "sushi and sashimi" plate. While it included several pieces of sashimi, two specialty tapas, and a soup or salad--overall a fair value--the four pieces of California roll included were subpar. They were loosely packed, difficult to pick up, and felt more like something from a fast-food sushi kiosk than a restaurant of this caliber. This isn't the first time I've ordered this dish and encountered the same issue. It's unfortunate to see an otherwise beautiful plate diminished by such a weak component. That said, it remains a great place to visit overall, especially as a BYOW spot.

Oops. I have now learned my lesson. Attention to detail. Must remember in future. This restaurant is located on the fourth floor of a high-rise mall/office complex, with two dozen tables and chairs spilling out into the mall itself. At least the ambiance in the mall area is consistent. The restaurant interior is a mix of styles, including almost-sunken tables, linen tablecloths, paper napkins, laminated menus and dust-covered plastic flowers. At least, there were no obnoxious blaring televisions, so common south of the border. The trilingual staff were prompt and pleasant enough, as they sat me at the sushi bar (photo), one of the very few high points of this experience. After a quick look, I avoided the laminated menus and ordered sushi directly from what appeared to be the take-out menu. As usual, I ordered a small soup, a couple of maki and a handful of nirgiri. The soup itself was palatable. A few complaints I often have were actually well met here: the sushi rice itself was well seasoned, there was wasabi beneath each piece of raw fish in the nigiri, the unagi was not overwhelmed with fat and the tamago was excellent. Unfortunately, only mastering the non-fresh-fish segments in a sushi restaurant is a problem. The remainder of the main was disappointing. Both the maki, and a few of the nigiri were poorly constructed, falling apart even before being touched (photo). The spicy salmon was an unappetizing bland paste spilling from the roll. The eel cucumber had an added flavor I haven't had, or expected, before: mayonnaise. It didn't help. The ikura was also lacking - the salmon roe were soggy, not the firm "pop" expected from biting into really fresh roe. And lastly, the lunch bill, including tax and tip, was about CAD$70, far, far above any actual value received. There are plenty of other expensive restaurants within three blocks in which anyone would be pleased to spend their time and money. I am not gonna lie, I love deals so when I saw the promotion going on at this place, spend $20 or more and get a free Chicken Katsu Bento Box (which sells for $16), I was in! And my husband was game! We got the Sushi Combo 18 pieces ($16.99), and Chicken Karaage ($8) and got the Chicken Katsu Bento Box for free! I requested no sesame seeds on any of the food and they were able to accommodate 100%. Even the japchae in the Bento box had no sesame seeds. I was thrilled because many places make the japchae in a huge batch and premix the sesame seeds in. I'm glad this place just sprinkles the sesame seeds on top so I was able to have sesame seed-less japchae ;) The sushi combo was all Maki rolls, which I love. It's chef's choice, and I got 5 salmon Futomaki (raw salmon, cucumber, avocado, crunchy tempura bits and masago), 5 tuna Futomaki (raw tuna, cucumber, avocado, crunchy tempura bits, and surimi crab mixed with mayo), 4 torpedo shrimp with cucumber maki and 4 surimi crab, avocado and tamago (omelet) maki. They were all delicious. Ingredients were fresh and tasty. The Chicken Karaage were big pieces and were a mix of white and dark meat. No gristley pieces, all lean meats :) They weren't too greasy and tasted great dipped in the spicy mayo. The Chicken Katsu Bento Box was particularly tasty because it was free, lol. It was lean chicken breast breaded and deep-fried. It was crispy and delicious. It came on a bed of rice. It came with a small salad of mixed greens (like a real mesclun mix, not cheapy iceberg lettuce) with corn, cucumber and edamame with a creamy dressing. It also came with japchae, like I previously mentioned. It was a simple japchae with just the sweet potato noodles and some shiitake mushrooms, but it was good. And the Bento Box also had 4 Maki. Two of each that were like the ones in my sushi combo (torpedo shrimp and cucumbers, and surimi crab, avocado and tamago). We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. There are a few tables to dine in, but it's mostly a takeout place. Decor is minimal, it's more utilitarian. In fact, there's a picture of 2 ladies in traditional Vietnamese attire on a bike that I remember from the Vietnamese restaurant that used to be in that space (It was called Miss Banh Mi, and I was there with my mom in 2017).
