The wonton soup was wonderful with very tasty dumplings, the okonomiyaki was delicious however a little bit too heavy on the sauce, my sashimi selection was fresh and flavorful. Hm... I have been a fan of Sushi Siam for a few years now....but the knowledge of food the servers have is a joke.... The restaurant posted a phone on FB a few weeks back that looked good. I asked one server, she said it was a tuna appetizer, we ordered it to find out it was not. So we asked another server and he said "oh that's an old photo, we have not sold them in a couple of years." Well... in addition we added extra stuff on our roll which didn't get added but still got charged for it. Sushi Siam is OK. In a more competitive metro, I would be tougher on Sushi Siam. However, I understand that: 1. Champaign/Urbana (Chambana?) is not a more competitive metro 2. Quality ingredients are hard to come by here. 3. A place that did serve food with imported high quality ingredients would have to charge prices that would be locally untenable. I think it's probably the best that the Champaign area is going to get in terms of Asian/Thai/Sushi, hence 5*. I think it's important for the area to have more international options for food. Anyway, the review: I had the Woon Sen Pad Thai with Shrimp, Thai Hot. In my opinion, this was not Thai Hot, not spicy at all, and not even Pad Thai. Its primary flavor was sweet. It didn't have the characteristic (and delicious) balance of sourness savoriness, and sweetness from tamarind, fish sauce, palm sugar, and other classic Thai ingredients. It just tasted very, very sweet. I was glad there was a lime there. The smaller portions that other reviewers were complaining about was a blessing in disguise here. I also had a rainbow roll, chutoro and otoro nigiri. These were okay. The fish didn't taste like it was particularly high quality, which I wasn't surprised by and was willing to look over. I was really disappointed with the sushi rice. I felt it was really lacking because it was so bland overall...there was hardly any trace of rice vinegar (or any flavor, really) that I could detect in it besides the rice. It was more like plain old rice. My favorite thing was the deep fried vanilla ice cream, which was recommended by my server. It was delicious and indulgent. It has been my favorite dessert in the area by far. I appreciate the recommendation. All that being said, I appreciate the work that Sushi Siam is putting forward. It was surprising to me to have been so...surprised at Sushi Siam's choices with respect to flavor profiles. My hope is that these choices are adaptations to local preferences. read more

We took a detour hoping it would be worth the drive and were so happy we did! One of the BEST meals I have ever had! Wow... This place exceeded my expectations. I've heard of this place last year and finally got around to trying it out and was happy to find how amazing it was. The fish was sooo good- tasted fresh, buttery, soft, everything I could want in raw fish in the Chambana area. The plating/aesthetic was beautiful. Service was top notch as well; the servers constantly checked in to make sure everything was perfect. We got the sashimi combo platter (which had a great variety), the chirashi don, the yellow dragon roll, and the okonomiyaki- No complaints about any of the dishes. Price is about the same as any of the other sushi restaurants in town. They also serve thai food, which based off descriptions and photos sounds amazing as well. Was picking up some items at Cheese and Crackers when I saw this new restaurant was open. It was just after 11am and I thought it was a good opportunity for an early lunch. The restaurant is very modern with a few tables set up -- probably sits about 30 people. I sat near the front by the window which i wasn't crazy about because it was so cold outside, but the heat was turned up so I was pleasantly surprised. The menu has lots of options, but there were no lunch specials. The prices on most things seemed reasonable....under $13 for most things. Some soups had small portion options. I wound up ordering a spicy salmon roll and the appetizer sized Tom yum Soup. Everything was out in a matter of minutes and the sushi was a pleasant surprise. The rice was fresh and seasoned perfectly. The salmon was also fresh. The soup was very spicy...and i like spicy, but this had me coughing. It tasted great, but the spice was overpowering. We have been looking for a Thai restaurant since our arrival in the Champaign/ Urbana area. We discovered this gem when stopping in at the strip mall it is located and LOVED the lunch we just now had. I had the Cashew Nuts with Dried Red Pepper Entree, and my husband had the Bento Basil Chicken, complete with salad, soup, and California Sushi, both with medium heat. Their portioning for the stir fried vegetable medley dish was also off. The picture included was taken before eating- it felt too expensive for the price. Also, the dish was very soup-y for a dish titled "stir fry". The dish itself tasted great but it does make me hesitant to try other entrees. I can't speak for their rolls but I tried their sashimi.
