I tried a few dishes here, and overall, the food turned out pretty good. * Pineapple Fried Rice with Tofu (Medium Spice): Really tasty and well-balanced. The pineapple added a nice sweetness that worked perfectly with the spices. * Yellow Curry with Tofu: Decent but nothing too special. It's okay if you're craving curry, but not a standout. * Fried Rice with Basil: The star of my order! Very flavorful and aromatic--definitely the best dish I had. As for the place itself, the ambience is just okay--a small spot with plenty of parking, which is a plus. Service is fast and efficient, no complaints there. The only drawback is the pricing. Can't get Thai in Peoria so stopped on our way through. The service was excellent! Portion size good although I couldn't stop eating to have leftovers. Expansive menu! My husband describes this place as his favorite Thai restaurant in the whole world. He hasn't been to Thailand, but for a Thai restaurant in central Illinois, this place is for real. We've stopped at this place several times in our travels, and it always delivers. (They also have carry-out. Ha!) Most important consideration. When you're asked, "how spicy?" consider the chef is probably a native of Thailand. "5" is Thai spicy, as in melt your tongue spicy. "2" is American spicy, as in your nose will run but you can still enjoy the flavor. I ordered "3" once and it was eye-watering hot. Be careful. When we were here a couple years ago, they hadn't yet reopened to dining in, but I'm happy to say, you can eat inside now. The dining room is simple and clean. The service is efficient and super fast. We waited less than 3 minutes for our crab rangoons -- crispy and filled with spicy cream cheese. The spring rolls were also expertly made and very fresh. I deviated from my useful order of shrimp green curry to try the papaya salad (aka som tum). Think of it as the tastiest tomato and iceberg lettuce salad you've ever eaten. The shredded green papaya is not sweet--it reminded me of bean sprouts. It was served with hot white rice, which I found weird until I tried it. Definitely try it. You might like it, too. It cost $17.99, which seemed high but it was very fresh and flavorful. (There are lunch specials for $12.99 if you're looking for value.) We will, without a doubt, be back. read more

But don't judge a book by its cover, it was by far some of the best Thai I've ever had. We order off their lunch menu, pad Thai and green curry, spice level medium. Thai is my favorite and I often make it at home and I love spice. However, their medium spice is burn your lips and mouth off spicy. My eyes were watering and my nose running! I would definitely get mild next time. I've eaten a lot of other Thai and always order medium, but their medium is very very hot. Our waitress was super friendly and sweet! What a joke! I went to eat at this place alone. Ordered a Thai Iced Tea, Spring Rolls, Papaya Salad and Chicken Satay. My bill was $58.00 they added on extra charges for Credit Card. They do not accept AMEX. The food was ok! But not worth $58.00 that is a rip off! I should of gone to my other Thai place that I go to. But I like to try new places. Best Thai food in CU. Finally a real Thai food place and not "Thai/Laos" cuisine. However, I cannot give this place 5 stars because the prices of their dishes are almost criminal. If you think the prices of the food is high, you are right. I can't justify paying almost $20.00 for fried rice and $17.99 for their noodles dishes. (And this is before inflation!) I usually don't complain about prices on menus but this is just ridiculous. There is no reason that their dishes should be more than $14 and even that's pushing it. That is why I probably won't go back because the prices are not fair. Most of the ingredients are not hard to come by in the Midwest except maybe some Thai spices but they're not in every dish. I would say, if you really want real Thai food, this place is better than most other Thai restaurants in the area, just be prepared to pay premium for it. read more

I went into Thara Thai with some high expectations after reading some of the reviews on Yelp, but I was a bit disappointed with my experience. As a point of disclosure, we did order carry out and the kitchen was backed up that night so it's possible that could have factored into our dinner quality. Ingredients are very good and they are able to calibrate the level of spiciness and hotness pretty well. However, the execution of our menu choices was lacking. The spring rolls were very large (maybe too large) but there was an off-putting odor that made them unappetizing. I don't think it was a freshness issue but possibly one of the spices used in them. The sauce accompanying them was essential though as the rolls would be very bland in and of themselves. I was also underwhelmed by the green curry, normally one of my favorite dishes. The flavors were spot on but the curry sauce broke, maybe from overheating, and it left an oily mess in the dish. Mongolian beef was tender but again under seasoned. The glass noodle salad was a bright spot in our dinner experience with its citrus flavors shining through. Overall, the quality wasn't bad but definitely not the best I've tasted in C-U. I will give them another try, but I prefer Sabai Thai as a better local alternative. read more
