We drove from Arcata to go to the McKinleyville restaurant in order to get a Sea Quake Citra beer, our favorite & they were out of it!! Ugh Then our signature roll that we love Summer In the City was barely edible, the ingredients were dried out plus it was missing the delicious green sauce. We also ordered a couple other rolls and sushi was not rolled tight so when you picked up a piece it would all fall out. I would like to say our waitress was wonderful throughout the debacle. WAY overpriced. They charge luxury costs for a lower tier dining experience. We were so close to the table next to us it felt like we were dining with them. Our waiter didn't check on us the entire time. We ended up asking a waiter assigned to another table for water refills and if we could receive our check. The menu is very small. They lack basic, common rolls you'd expect at a sushi restaurant. The quality of the fish itself was good and the rolls were tasty. The portions were quite small for the price. read more

Tried calling in order to go and was put on hold for 10 minutes with no one getting back on but called back and the girl that answered before said oh something was wrong with phone when she came back on because she couldn't hear me but that's because I hung up after 10 minutes. When I tried to place order at 5 she said we were looking at 7pm to get it and this is after being on hold for 10 minutes. I called in an order to go, for pick up. The California roll I ordered was not made with crab - it had shrimp and did not have sesame seeds and the rice was very gummy. Ordered miso soup also( it was hot) and when I picked it up, the lady could not stop telling me to put it in my drink holder in my car, this is not my first time to order miso soup to go. Ordered vegetable dumplings, and they were green you can reference the picture, they did not taste that great and there was hardly any vegetable stuffing in it. The chicken Katsu was the only great thing I don't think this sushi place really knows how to do. Sushi rolls. Honestly they were cut very odd and were gigantic. Been eating here for years, its in my neighborhood and its still consistently good. Alright, first some guidelines - this is the ONLY Sushi restuarant in this little town and its busy busy and then busy some more when its open for dinner. On the weekends it can be out the door. Its a small interior dining room as well, so seating is a premium - so keep that in mind if you arrive at prime dinner time with no reservations on a saturday - dont whine about waiting or complaint about being rushed. This place does seriously, ten times the amount of take out on a saturday night than it seats period. My recent visit, once again - with reservations - a five minute wait (without at least 45 minutes or more) and by the time I left, it was out the door. Even with prompt seating, there is only one waiter maybe two, one expeditor who is always running food and a front hostess who I watched answer and take to go orders (literally 20-30 plus orders) non stop during my hour and a fifteen minute meal - with all the tables being spread out now, its only about seven or eight tops and a few of those are only two seats. My point, its a small place with maybe 30 seats and always busy, the servers are always running and your food is always made to order - it may take a minute to get to you, be kind. The food has been consistently good over the years, tonight the same, yes there may be better - but its the only game in this little town. I try to always make reservations during prime time dinner hours or show up when its not busy. The nightly (daily) specials always tend to be good, and whats locally fresh. The Saki selection is decent and the house brand is pretty good. Almost every server I have encountered there in all my visits has tried their best, and I have never seen anyone just standing around thats working the front of the house. So especially considering the last couple years we have all endured, I am for one glad my little sushi place is still open. Tonight the Poke was so fresh and delicious, and the Pork belly was exceptional, the nightly special I went with once again proved also to be a good choice, with local dungeness crab being in season. And the honey crunch roll never fails. The server tonight, though spread thinly was professional and courteous, yes it took a few extra minutes, it is what it is - on a packed weekend night. 4 Stars - make reservations and expect a wait or order it to go... its seems like thats what most folks are doing by what I saw tonight read more

I'm bummed to join the chorus of folks who have mentioned that things have been inconsistent or on a downward trend. I recently bought an anniversary dinner for my partner with some of our usual go-to's. Korroke, Chashu Pork, Spider Roll, Ikura Nigiri, and Crispy Spicy Roll. Like others had mentioned, I still ended up waiting several minutes though I had called in the order early and showed up when advised. Aside from that, the food was definitely a disappointment compared to last time. Rolls got smaller. Korroke, which is typically in a big triangle shape, appeared to have been half of an order and we're wondering if it was split with someone else's in haste. The triangles were obviously cut in half and there was potato uniformly exposed on one side, and the portion was smaller than usual. The Chashu pork belly is normally tender, and the fat melts in your mouth. This order was definitely overcooked as the meat was gray and the fat portion had a gristly watermelon-like crunch to it. One of Ikura (salmon roe) nigiri had fallen over and revealed itself to have just enough roe to mask that the sushi wrapper was filled to the top with rice, so I was basically paying $8.50 for a couple of teaspoons of salmon roe. I just have to correct the record. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the county, mainly because of the kind staff. I was sitting next to the commenter who alleged waiters were on cocaine?! Wow. That patron was incredibly rude to the staff because I got my food before him and I sat down after. It happens dude. But this guy proceeded to puff up his chest and yell at the kind waiter in front of his young kids. The waiter was so graceful and kind and told him his dinner was boxed up and on the house but that he needed to leave. The guy refused to leave and the waiter said he would be forced to call authorities if the guy did not take his free meal and go. Incredible waiters! This allegation is unbelievable, there is absolutely no sign of drug use or anything of the nature at this establishment and I frequent often. read more

Really sad to have to leave 1 star bc their sushi is so good but time after time I go here or place an order they mess it up, give me the wrong order, wait hours, and NEVER answer the phone, placed an order through door dash early so by the time we were hungry the food would be here, an hour and a half later the dasher called to say they had given him the wrong order and that it would take another hour and a half to get it remade. Sushi is good. Service is hit and miss. I'm bummed they charge for a side of the panko crunch that I like my spicy tuna roll rolled in. They never give it enough when I ask to roll it and charge 2/3$ for the side. The portions are smaller than they used to be and an 18% gratuity is added no matter what. Was sat at 745 waited til 900 with kids two tables sat after us and my kids and I where kicked out while the waiter held that he would call the cops because I didn't say thank you. Extremely, shockingly rude attitude by one of the female servers when I entered the front doors and politely inquired if I may use the restroom. She looked at me as if I was a clown-demon-clinger--perhaps to build a fort in there permanently!-- and crisply denied me permission, "Our restrooms are for customer use only." We have been going to sushi spot in Mckinleyville and Arcata for years because the food is delicious! Unfortunately they really struggle with to-go orders. We prefer eating at home since we have kids and it's just easier but it has become such a hassle that we are going to stop supporting this business. Tomo and Nori are both great Japanese restaurants in Arcata with much better service! Sorry Sushi spot, we really tried to hang in there but I don't want to jump through so many hoops and long wait times to pay to eat there. The last time we went I called right at 5pm because I know they are slow. The hostess told me 6:35pm...kinda long but ok, we expected that! I arrived at 6:35 and was told "no, it's a 7:20pm pick up" and she insisted she told me that on the phone but said it would be ready in 20 minutes. I waited...and waited... and finally it was ready 50 minutes later. No apology or explanation. Kids were hangry and it really kinda wrecked dinner. Again, good food and worth eating there in person but never try ordering to go! We won't ever come back but it is a good restaurant aside from the poor service. read more

The amount of time you have to wait for sushi you call/order in AHEAD OF TIME is crazy and the fact that after you wait for an hour for your food, they don't even give you wasabi and ginger unless you ask for it is insane. That should be a given with sushi rolls. I've had other bad experiences here and this might seem minor, but take some pride in your work. Wasabi and ginger is the bare minimum. read more

The food for alright -- I had expected much better for a town right by the Pacific Ocean. The creamy shrimp avocado salad was really creamy (if u like that sort of thing) but the shrimps were teeny tiny. Masago was a nice touch to go on it though. The Iron Lion roll had smoked salmon, masago and lots of creamy sauce once again. Not worth $14 price tag though. Overall - just a so so experience. By the way, they have siracha sauce (thumb up) but will charge you $.50 for it (thumb down). read more

What can I say, the food is consistent and excellent. Had tempura asparagus in my roll today. Oh my, so good.

I was dragged in here, even though I hate the Arcata location, I still went. It was okay. The three stars are mainly because I truly appreciate how smart someone is to open a restaurant in McKinleyville that's something other than Mexican; it's nice to have another option. I still wasn't terribly thrilled with the food. The rice to other ingredients ratio is still way off, I don't particularly like having to dislocate my mouth like a snake to eat my food. Using that much rice just makes the rolls too big. They were still falling apart a little this time too, but definitely not to the extreme of our last visit. It did take us 30 minutes to get them after ordering.....using less rice might also help speed up the process... read more

The sushi roll was normal in size but it was a little too sweet because of the extra sauce that we did not ask for. I had to pick up rice off of the roll because it was soaked in sauce. Paid $16 for a tempura basket that consisted of two pieces of fried zucchini two pieces of sweet potato two pieces of broccoli two shrimps one bell pepper two mushrooms And two onion rings. We have gone here countless times over the years, and have always had a fine (even if a bit inconsistent) experience, but our visit last night left me confused and a little annoyed with how our server treated us, we ended up leaving without ordering anything. I don't know if this server was new but we have never had her as a server in the past or seen her in the establishment. She was an older woman, I didn't bother to get her name. After being seated and looking at the menu the server came by to take our order, we wanted to start with 2 drinks from the special menu. We were asked for ID which is normal and I was immediately asked to remove my ID from my wallet. Ok not a problem, she proceeded to take a unusually long and close look at it, run her fingernails over the signature, look at the back, look at the front again, and hand it back noting "you gotta get a new one of these soon", I have 6 months before it expires, but whatever. My wife hands over her ID with the attached (stapled to it) paperwork showing that it has been renewed at the DMV and the new ID is in the mail. And was immediately told that it's not valid. After a short polite back and forth trying to ask why it won't work and nowhere else has rejected it, the server snapped at us with a short "are you ABC certified? Have you taken the new RBS test? This isn't valid and we can't take this." I asked to speak to someone else about this because we just wanted to enjoy some drinks and dinner, and not deal with this weird power trip. She came back with a smug smile hovering next to the girl working the front desk who tried to be at least friendly and sympathetic while defending her coworkers position. I understand that she was technically 100% within her right and that she was enforcing ABC codes to the exact letter of the law. But the entire interaction had what felt like a strange desire to find something wrong right from the start, we're both pushing 30 years old, we don't look or act like 20 year olds trying to pull a fast one and score some illegal alcohol. I have never had any servers there ask me to remove my ID from my wallet and check security features in the past, and we have not had any issues ordering drinks, buying beer, or getting into any other establishments with her license+paperwork in the past 2 weeks. She was also extremely short with us and unapologetic. I expect to be treated like a customer at a sushi restaurant, and I expect the servers to act like servers at a sushi restaurant. Instead we were treated like freshly 21 year old college students trying to buy a cheap handle of vodka at a liquor store and she acted like a TSA agent on a power trip who takes their job too serious. I have worked customer service since turning 18 and have seen people act like her many times in the past, they use any small control over other granted to them to cause other people minor annoyances for god knows what reason. ABC, as strict as it is, allows for some level of discretion, 99% of people just act like normal humans and look at the ID, look at the paperwork, and get on with their job instead of picking a weird hill to die on. We left after that interaction and did not order any food, if we see her working there next time we will be requesting to be seated in a section she is not working. The prices are way too high to be dealing with her weird power trips and bad attitude. read more

Went in the other day for lunch to order two rolls to go and while there no customers in there at all and the hostess said they weren't working on any to go orders, the chef still said 15 minutes and it ended up taking almost 25 minutes. For two rolls. So I wouldn't go there if you're in a rush All in all, I think they they're great. If I was reviewing on food alone I would be giving 5 stars but when it comes to the service they get a big fat 0 in my book. All thanks to one "waiter" Bailey. The food was made well and tasted great! We started with the meal with the Dynamite oysters, then we had the Moonstone roll and the Klamath roll, and then we finished off with the honey crunch roll. All were made well and were very cool as more specialty rolls. A+ to the sushi chefs! Now to Bailey, he was extremely unattentive. He came to get our drink orders, we were glancing at the drink menu and went loom up and order and he was gone... then our soy sauce dishes were dirty, which wasn't a big deal, so we ask for new ones and he didn't bring us the new ones until we got our food and had to ask again. We kept one of our menus because we knew we are going to order more, but when it came time to us wanting to order more we could not get his attention. He never asked if we wanted refills on her drinks, refills on or water, or even if anything was going okay. When we were done with our meal we then couldn't find him to even get our check, I had to get his attention while he was bringing food to another group at the bar right next to us and then it still took another 10 minutes to get our check. The only reason it got processed quickly was because someone else did it for us. Hands down the worst waiter experience we've had in quite a while. And being that we both have experience in this field we definitely know what could come with being busy, but this was just neglect.
