It's been difficult traveling and finding good vegan options, especially with smaller towns that have lots of hours/days they aren't open, especially "Off season". I'm hoping this helps another vegan out there, or anyone really. We came in for an early ish dinner. At the time it was pretty mellow but that was appreciated because we just needed to relax and enjoy sitting down after hiking the last few days. Something fresh and not too rich where we could take out time and not feel gross. I was curious about the soul options being vegan or not because miso usually isn't, but they had this yummy sounding mushroom and veggie broth soup with vegetables and tofu (I think it's called Kenshin jiru but I might be absolutely butchering that). GET IT! It's not too heavy but has such a great flavor, plus the fresh veggies and bits of raw tofu for protein (they accidentally forgot the tofu but when I asked my server if they could just bring it on the side for me they were super nice about it). I also got some standard edamame and avocado maki roll, both of these were "fine", they did the trick but weren't amazing. My partner had the large hot sake which he loved, and then a tuna maki roll and the omakase nigiri. Same thing with his maki, fine nothing to write home about, but he loooved his omakase. They didn't tell us what was on it but I think it was albacore, salmon, salmon roe, mackerel, yellowtail, and tuna. He said it was some of the best tasting fish/nigiri he's had in a while. Our server was great at refilling our waters and checking in making sure we had everything and was just very sweet, so we appreciated them a lot. We'd definitely recommend! read more

The workers are all very kind and knowledgeable. They are able to make accommodation or alterations as necessary. Despite that, the food in general leaves more to be desired. The fish is definitely high quality! But perhaps the rice should be a bit more fluffy, and more flavorful. The batter on the tempura was a bit too thick and ultimately caused it to not be cooked all the way. I think the sauces can also be better prepared-- they taste a bit prepackaged and not really homemade. I'd be willing to come again and not order rolls but instead focus on the nigiri or the chirashi bowl. read more

We were the only two in the restaurant and service was attentive at first when we got seated but that's it. Food took FOREVER. We ordered a lot but it took far too long especially being the only two people in the entire place. The sushi rice was over handled and gummy. Never even asked if we wanted a water refill as my glass was empty. The roller (while we were waiting for our rolls) and wait staff then owner talked too much instead of caring for paying customers. I do not understand how this place has 3 stars when it is hands down the best sushi in the County. Coming from Los Angeles, I have high expectations for sushi and have been consistently disappointed by overpriced, awful local sushi joints. Every place people recommend was not good and I had given up. Then one day I thought I might as well try this place and I WAS SO SHOCKED! The sushi was fresh and delicious. It has big cuts of fish like I'm used to and sushi rice that doesn't taste off like the other places nearby. I love their Omakase Nigiri and Hamachi collar. This is also the only place in the area with Hokkaido Scallops that I know of. Cocktails here are great. If you're looking for more traditional sushi like you'd find in LA or the Bay, this is the place. I've had friends and family visit from LA, San Francisco, and D.C., and they all love the sushi here! Honestly, some of these reviews floor me because this place is hands down the best sushi for HOURS and the reviews genuinely deterred me from eating here for years. If you love sushi and have been consistently disappointed by local spots, give this place a try (or if you just love sushi)! If you love fish you will not be disappointed. Walking from Eighth Street into the building, taking you down the stairs into an empty room which then leads you to the side door of the restaurant is definitely a sketchy start. Starting off with the Tempura Calamari, I was pleasantly surprised with the freshness of the fish and enjoyed the tempura paired with a Spicy Mayo. I highly enjoyed the chef's choice of 5 Piece Omakasi Nigiri, the fish selection was intentional and melted in my mouth, 8.5/10. The Lion King Roll was ordinary, but was still a good eat, 7/10. We Door Dashed our food. $90 spent on dinner for my family tonight and no one was happy! The Spider Roll was 4 small pieces, the Shrimp Tempura Roll was cold and over cooked rubber, the Pork Gyoza was so cold inside and out that my 6 year old grand- daughter said " I don't like it cold, even the meat is cold." Arcata is a fun little college town north of Eureka. I had visited briefly before, but recently Jamie W. and I stopped by and took the time to walk around the main plaza and browse the shops. That was when we noticed the sign for this sushi spot and discovered it was a subterranean operation that required entering a vacant hallway and going downstairs. I think the navigational maze added to the hipster vibe it was creating. So did the young clientele, mostly couples, who looked like a combination of Cal Poly students and twenty-something locals. It definitely struck us as a popular date spot. We were feeling a bit peckish, so we ordered on the light side by sharing a couple of well executed rolls, the $9 Spicy Tuna and $8 Negihama (Yellowtail & Scallion) Maki (photo: https://bit.ly/39puRDQ). Hadn't visited Nori in a while but came in tonight around 9 for take out. I appreciate how late they are open. Staff was friendly and attentive. Ordered a Kill Bill roll & a 4-2-0 roll. Both were delicious and came with ample fish. In my opinion this is what really sets Nori apart from the other restaurants. You can finally get a thick piece of salmon on top of your roll! I think Nori is now my favorite sushi restaurant because of this. It can be quite disappointing to spend $20 on a roll and not be satisfied with the amount of fish on it. Their ramen is also quite good! & the butter cake is a filling and tasty dessert. Will definitely need to start coming here more often. Located in the old Salt location, the much anticipated, Nori, did not disappoint. The restaurant is decorated subtly with star wars and dinosaurs on the walls while being a sushi grill and sake bar. Love it! My tablw started with a variety of appetizers. We had the Korean fried chicken, fried tofu, baked mussels, and calamari. The tofu and calamari were very light and airy. Not greasy at all. The Korean fried chicken came out like popcorn chicken with fried jalapeños and grilled onions on it. This dish is not spicy. If you eat the jalapeños, then maybe. The chicken is lightly coated. Great flavor. The baked green mussels had spicy mayo on it then baked. They then put masago on top with a little eel sauce on top over a bed of mixed greens. It came out very appealing. The mussels were a tad on the over cooked side but not too bad. For my main entree, I ordered the "jack ass" rock and OMG. Highly recommend. It is a spicy tuna and avocado roll battered with tempura and fried. It is then topped with tempura shrimp. Its then sprinkled with spicy mayo, eel sauce, and sriracha. Best roll I've ever had. For dessert, I ordered the taiyaki, which is red bean paste stuffed in a little fish shaped pastry. This came with a scoop of green tea ice cream. I love red bean desserts so I can be biased, but this was fantastic. The green tea ice cream but creamy and perfectly flavored not too light but not too bold on the green tea notes. 100% recommend trying. My group loved this spot so much that we came back here two nights in a row! Both nights we came later than we should have--they close at 9:30pm, but we still got seated when we arrived at 9pm because of eventful days and some bad planning on our part. Places close here early it seems (maybe due to Covid?), so this joint is perfect if you're coming back from adventuring late and happen to be staying at Hotel Arcata and want a delicious "late" night sushi fix. Wednesday night was very quiet when we first visited and probably had 3 other groups seated. The entrance facing the plaza was closed, so we had to walk around the block to their other entrance. However, the plaza entrance was open on Thursday night and the restaurant itself was bustling and almost looked full! My partner has an allium intolerance, and he was able to eat their Nori Combo without any reaction--he had to ask the waitress to confirm with the chefs. They forgot his seaweed salad side for that combo on our first night there but remembered it the second night. He didn't react to the seaweed salad either, if I remember correctly. So for any of y'all who react to allium, this option should be safe for you but please ask to double-check! I had the Hamachi Lover ($18) and loved it a lot! I couldn't finish my whole meal, and had my partner help me out. the night after, I ordered the Jack Ass roll ($15.) It was delicious, more filling than I expected because it was fried and came with 3 fried shrimp on top, and also super saucy! That was my first time ordering a roll with that much sauce, so I think I'll have to opt out for a less saucier roll next time. I also ordered a small bottle of sparkling yuzu sake because they didn't have the plum wine in stock and enjoyed that. They also offered FRESH WASABI on our second night for an extra charge, but none in my party took up the offer. If I had ordered the Hamachi Lover again then I would have! We've only eaten at the other two sushi joints near the plaza, but this one is our favorite. Great quality sushi, fair prices, awesome service, nice interior, and a good loaded drink menu for whomever that interests.
