Sushi Blue is a nice little sushi spot tucked inside a casino hotel. You do have to walk through the casino floor to get there. The service was genuinely great, and the sushi was actually pretty good! I don't think I'd make a special trip just for it, but if you're already staying at the hotel or in the area, it's a solid choice for a good dinner. read more

Because we arrived just before closing, the hostess and/or server graciously informed us the kitchen was still open for take out. We were seated to wait for our to go order, and I loved the opposition styled walls. Although we expected the Japanese Buffalo Wings differently, everything was delicious. We also ordered shrimp tempura, salted edamame, tempura shrimp roll, tonkotsu ramen, and yakisoba. The latter was my favorite. What a great dinner! We had quite the drive up to visit family, so we called a few hours ahead for a reservation--and I'm so glad we did. We arrived around 5 pm, and it was already busy, but we were seated at a nice table. Humboldt isn't typically known for its sushi, and casinos around here usually don't have the best food, but Sushi Blue shatters both of those stereotypes. The place was buzzing when we arrived--quaint yet busy, not too loud. I could hear the chefs calling out orders, and the fish case was well organized, which is a rare find up here. It's actually the first thing that makes me walk out of a sushi restaurant without ordering, so this was a great sign. Our waitress got to us quickly, and we were ready to dive in. We started with a Tomodachi, a Nor-Cal invention--half sake, half plum wine served hot. If you haven't tried one, it's a must. So delicious! Appetizers: Super Sunomono with Tako: This was incredible. The dish had just the right amount of spice, with hot peppers, chili crunch on top, octopus, avocado, and traditional sunomono underneath. Wow! 1/2 Sushi Tostada: I had no idea what to expect, but this dish blew me away. Beautiful tempura-fried chips with avocado, spicy tuna, tobiko, and a sweet sauce. It was over the top in the best way. Dinner: Traditional Maki with Soy Paper: Small, affordable rolls--perfect for filling up. We had the Sake & Avo and Negi Hama rolls, both fantastic. Spicy Tuna Roll: On par with any of our favorite spots in the Bay Area--was top-notch. Nigiri: Hamachi: Fresh and delicious. Uni: Large, cold, and full of flavor--such a treat! Hamachi Kama: I ordered this well done, and it took a minute, but it was crispy on the outside and absolutely delicious. Honestly, I don't think you'll find anything like it in these parts. We came in with like ten minutes to spare before closing and they still took my family of four. We were celebrating my daughter's first lead role in a play, so it really meant a lot to us that the staff didn't turn us away. The service was fast, friendly, and the food was great. read more

This was definitely an interesting experience. First - the good stuff: the food was great. Everything was delicious and the presentation was great too. They were very generous with the wasabi and ginger. The only thing was a little underwhelming was the ama ebi, which was presented nicely but needed to be cooked a little longer to be more crispy. The prices are really affordable though. The okay stuff: restaurant was inside the casino, and a little difficult to find. As others have mentioned, it's a small place. We went on a Saturday night and it was quite busy. Would definitely recommend a reservation. We were told there would be over an hour wait, but then we came back 10 minutes later and were seated immediately. Wouldn't recommend taking that chance though. We were seated at the bar. At first, our waiter didn't come up to us for about 25 minutes, but they were quite busy so it's possible we got missed (they also forgot to give us water). After asking for a waiter, we did end up getting service and it wasn't too bad. However, someone who seemed like the manager was checking up on tables (maybe the regulars), but he completely passed by us even though he made eye contact - just no effort to come up and say anything or check on us so that was a little disappointing. Used to love this place. The variety has been cut back drastically, and the prices raised. Its just not worth the drive anymore. There are only 3 major fish options, and the focus is on rolls. If I am out there, I might stop by, but I will not travel that far for a mediocre meal. I get the fact that they are isolated, and they would cut back on the stuff that does not sell as well but it's no longer a deal when you add the price of gas and the limited selection. read more

I came here on a Thursday evening after making reservations. I got an early reservation and the place was not as busy as I expected it to be. Sushi Blue is located in the Blue Lake Casino and their hours are modified due to COVID-19. I sat at the sushi bar and decided to let the sushi chef help me out with making some rolls. I was not sure on what to order and told Chef Jacob what I liked in my roll and he made a couple of rolls for me. I am not sure what the names of the rolls were but they were all fresh and delicious! I did not expect to eat fresh sushi in a casino! The service was good here and the server and chef made sure that I had enough to eat and was well hydrated with drinks! I do not come by the area often, but I would definitely stop by for sushi on my next visit! read more

I live in Fortuna, so it's easily a 30+ mile drive to Blue Lake. Let me tell you, it's worth it. Sushi Blue is the best sushi in Humboldt County. The waitstaff is excellent, and their exemplary service deserves an above 15% tip at the very least. Now to to the food. Being inside a casino, they not surprisingly can shell out for fresh, high-quality ingredients. I've tried most of their signature rolls at this point, and none of them have disappointed. They have a variety of teas and Japanese beer for pairings as well. read more

The new restaurant is so beautiful, from the incredible Sonny Wong mural that catches your eye as soon as you walk in, the tasteful warm lighting, and the sushi chef station as the centerpiece, creating an elevated and artful dining experience. I love having the option to sit at the bar and watch my delicious meal being assembled. Lastly, but most importantly, chef Pangnou is doing god's work with her vision for how to feed her customers. I like to think of myself as a great judge of Sushi. The best Sushi I had prior to Sushi Blue was Yellowtail in the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. Sushi Blue kicked them straight to second without question! The dining area is beautiful, the tables are comfortable with these really cool table lights that keep the light on the food. They are very clever lights. The bar is to die for! Wow The second we stepped into the restaurant we were greeted with a friendly welcome and smile. Our server was amazing and we didn't wait for anything we asked for. The food! What can I say? It was an entire experience and you have to visit the restaurant to truly appreciate it. The pictures are of the many dishes we ordered. We had the edamame as well and I didn't get a picture of them. They were tasty. The rolls are larger than other local sushi places and reasonably priced. Children are allowed and that is a big plus for us because our 8 year old daughter loves sushi! This is a sushi bar inside of the Blue Lake Casino. The food is tasty, but there is a reek of smoke wafting into the restaurant from the adjacent casino. The smoke makes the dining unpleasant. The sushi bar is adjacent to the casino's restaurant named "Alice's Restaurant". In the sushi bar, you can also order from the Alice's menu. However, beware, while the food from the sushi bar came quickly, the food ordered from Alice's took an unacceptable amount of time; my wife already finished her sushi while I was still waiting for my meal. (My review of Alice's Restaurant is in a separate article). They have seating at the sushi bar itself, or at tables. I had a Mai Tai cocktail ($6.50), which was very good. The "Butter Me Up" sushi ($20) is a lobster roll served around a bowl of melted clarified butter. Unusual, but very tasty. Their Tobiko (2 pieces, Nigiri style, $6.00) was perfect. Miso soup ($3.50) tasted as it should. I would rate the sushi bar much higher except for the smoke. They need to install a door between the restaurant and the casino, or vastly improve the ventilation system. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE!! We're moving soon and I'm so upset we didn't find this place sooner! Everything is fresh with large portions. Both chefs are amazing; we tried things we typically would never get, like the Tostada. The Bon Bons are my new favorite, really cool concept that I've only seen on Instagram. The Unagi was delicious I could eat that all night. You could order anything here and be incredibly satisfied, it's all good. If I could go back in time knowing what I know now, I would only come here for sushi (I've been eating sushi for 20 years in Southern California if that means anything). read more

Omg! This is the high quality sushi I have been searching for in the area. Came here with friends last night for the first time and they did not disappoint. We order two flasks of tomodachi (plum wine with sake) to share with the table. The flavor was light but more plum forward. I personally liked it but I think the whole table enjoyed it since we ordered two more flasks to share. For dinner we each order 2 rolls and shared amongst ourselves. I had the butter me up and cosmic roll. The butter me up is a lobster and asparagus roll wrapped in soy paper that is cut and place around a bowl that has a copious amount of melted butter in the center. Its visually interesting to look at. I definitely did not need that much butter nor do I think anyone else on the planet needs that much butter with this roll. Be careful when dipping the roll in. My friend lost hold of her roll and the whole thing got submerged. We had to bank the roll on the side to let the butter drain. With the large amount of butter they give, they also give a decent amount of lobster and shrimp tempura in each of the rolls. You could see a large chunk in each and taste it. The asparagus still had a little crunch to it so that went really nicely with the whole roll. I would order this again. The cosmic roll was also pretty good. Not my top 3 that we ordered but still delicious. The roll has shrimp tempura on the inside with asparagus and salmon and avocado on top with a chili miso sauce. The sauce was interesting but not my favorite. It wasnt very spicy so if the chili part is deterring you give it a try. My friend shared her curry me roll and that was probably my favorite roll on the table. It was a shrimp tempura roll with mango, avocado, cucumber inside and butterfish and jalapeño on top with a coconut curry sauce. The fish was fantastic! I will be ordering this roll again next time I come. Other rolls we had were the baja roll, sasquash roll, and maui maki. I liked them in that order. Will probably not order the maui maki again. There are just better rolls that I prefer. It was a really mellow favored roll. Over all, great quality or food. The rolls were a decent size. Service was friendly and helpful. Only downside is the restaurant is small so if they are busy there will be a wait for larger parties. They have it set up normally for three 4 tops three 2 tops and then seats at the bar for maybe 8. read more

Ordered 2 different rolls. Neither was cut properly. One roll had three different sizes. The other had four. Can't expect too much for the area. Humbolt County Gem. This place is in the Blue Lake casino tucked away from the other main restaurant Alice's. Glad to say I found this place. Being from the Bay Area and have eaten fresh sushi from around the world I must confess this place is legit. Not to sound any other way than real is the fact it was two white guys making the sushi. So obviously I was very skeptical. However the fish is super fresh, considering the proximity to the coast I expected this and they delivered. The main thing is that they have options on the menu that you do not typically see such as a butter fish. It was very light and flavorful. They even had a full line up of Hitachino beers from Japan where many restaurants in bay are do not even carry this line up. So I will say it is very small restaurant but they were accommodating by seating me in the Alice side of the restaurant. I obviously did not get the ambiance of a sushi restaurant but to be able to eat and not wait is a plus. Especially in an area where everything closes at 8 pm. However Heidi the waitress made sure to not forget about me and was attentive even though I was out of site. She is the one who even asked the chef if she could seat me on the other side so that I could be served. So she earns points for getting me to eat sooner than later. I had all the Hitachino beers. Appetizer I started with a lobster Miso (Lobstiso) soup. Was ok. However too much butter in the soup. I understand they wanted to make the broth a little richer but it took from the miso flavor. It did have a fair amount of lobster meat so that was a plus. I then had the Hamachi Toro( yellowtail belly) hand roll. Super fresh meat and great rice. Wrap was either a too thick variety or stale as it was difficult to bite through. However the flavors were amazing. Especially when they have the real wasabi relish. Went on to have the butterfish carpaccio fish is amazing and I will definitely look for this on the menu of my favorite sushi bars in the future. It was very good. The curry aioli could be removed or less as curry is a very dominant flavor and could take away from the freshness of the other ingredients however I really, really enjoyed this dish. For my roll I ordered the Rocket roll and it was fire! Super fresh and the citrus aioli really accentuated the freshness. One touch that was really nice is that they use a really hot knife to cut the roll. This chars the rice and fish on the edge and give a smoky finish to the roll. Very clever. This really sent the flavors home. Only drawback was the attention to detail in the cutting of the roll. Most pieces were same size however there was one piece that was twice the size. I still was able to eat it but if the average person had that piece it could be a problem. Attention to detail is as important as flavor in some instances. So overall if you are in the Eureka area and looking for a quality place to eat I suggest that you give Sushi Blue a try. I do not think that you will be dissatisfied, especially with the given options in the area this place really stands out and I feel would stand out in any larger metropolitan market. Love the table lights so you can easily read the menu. Very friendly staff greeted us and our server was prompt, polite, and welcoming. Absolutely the best sushi in humboldt county. Oddly tucked away in the back of Blue Lake Casino. There hasn't been anything on the menu I haven't tried that was wonderful. I was staying at the Blue Lake Casino and they have this establishment located inside the casino and I must say I'm pretty Impressed with the selection , freshness and variety of high quality sushi at this spot. Being spoiled with many sushi options coming from LA, I usually never get sushi anywhere that isn't a major city, but for some reason gave this spot a try ! Jacob and Reid at the sushi bar are true artesian sushi chefs !! I'd go as far and say that this spot was better than alot of sushi spots that I've been to! Wow! Wow!! This is the best restaurant in Humboldt. No offense to other restaurants that are very yummy but this Chef is so inventive and bold with his flavors and combinations it's out of this world. I came across the website menu and was so impressed that I came in an hour later. It did not disappoint! We started with the lobster, crab, truffle oil, miso soup that was so complex and mouthwatering. We had the Escolar carpaccio with curry infused sauce, some inventive and delicious vegetarian rolls and the high roller, which is the best beef roll I have had in the country and I eat at sushi places all over the country. I'm just saying it is so special we went two nights in a row. A plus is the chef is amazingly talented but also a really great person. So humble for how talented he is. He infuses Hawaii and Sonoma, places he worked dedicated to his craft of 20 years. It truly shows. This place will not disappoint. Oh and the second time we did the omakase.....ummmm it was insane. Nothing was weird or unwanted. He asks what you like and delivers a meal of your dreams. I wish I was there now! :-( read more

Looked at the menu, could not find a lot of special rolls that did not have a lot of fu fu in them! We are Sushi eaters, eggplant, mango, does not do a thing for the taste of good fresh fish. I remember a few years ago we visited this Resturant, Sushi Chef was trying all sorts of different taste ideas that did I not match, there are so many combinations of Sushi that can be combined together, most people really don't know what good rolls are! Best thing we ate, Ahi, arugula salad, very good, rainbow roll good, not any fu fu stuff! Like I said, don't try to fix what is not broken! Need improvement with creating some good rolls!
