Sussex Fish Bar - A Disappointing Dive Near Paddington Station When in England, indulging in fish and chips is a must, and we were excited to finally try this iconic dish. Unfortunately, our visit to Sussex Fish Bar turned into an experience we'd rather forget. We arrived around 9:30 PM, tired and starving after a long day of sightseeing. The restaurant wasn't crowded, and we were seated promptly. The menu is quite limited, which we initially took as a positive sign, assuming the kitchen focused on quality rather than quantity. However, this assumption was quickly dashed. Our group of five ordered two portions of fish and chips, two mixed platters, and a two-piece fried chicken. The fish and chips and mixed platters came out quickly and were decent--nothing extraordinary but satisfying enough for our hunger. However, the fried chicken became the source of frustration. Over 15 minutes passed, and there was still no sign of the chicken. We followed up with the waiter, who admitted he had forgotten the order. Despite repeated reminders and visible tension between the waiter and the kitchen staff, it took another five minutes for the chicken to arrive. By then, the person who ordered it had completely lost their appetite. What made the situation worse was the lack of an apology or any effort to make amends. Not only was there no acknowledgment of their mistake, but they also had the audacity to insist on charging us for the untouched chicken that remained on the table. To add insult to injury, the restaurant's front door wouldn't close properly, letting in an icy draft on a cold and windy night. When we attempted to adjust the door, we were scolded by the staff--adding to an already miserable dining experience. In summary: * Service was disorganized and inattentive. * No accountability or courtesy shown for mistakes. * Ambience was uncomfortable, with a freezing draft and unwelcoming staff behavior. This place doesn't even deserve a single star. If you're in the Paddington area and craving fish and chips, do yourself a favor and avoid Sussex Fish Bar. Save your time, money, and mood by dining elsewhere. The lack of pictures to post with this review is a classic proof that we were famish and devoured our food the moment it was served on our table, but also good since we had no desire to recommend this place anyway, a tourist trap! read more

Freshly made, the fish was flaky, fresh, and delicious. Hot and crispy, the golden batter tasted great with vinegar. The chips were crisp, golden, and went well with ketchup. I was stayed nearby for the London Marathon and came here for a quick meal. I got an order of their cod fish and chips. Seemed like all of their fish and chips were pre-made and sitting under the warming lamps. You really couldn't get any faster fast food. I got mine in a takeaway box. I paid for the food and was out of there in less than 5 minutes. It was good food, but boy was it greasy. Not bad, but I don't think I could eat it everyday. read more

This place has some of the best fish and chips I have had in the UK. I was starving, too, so that always helps - but this was honestly delicious. I came here based on searches in the Paddington train stop area. I had the whitebait with my fish and chips. The whitebait was so crunchy with just the right amount of seasoning. It is definitely something to try when in England. So hard to find, it seems. The fish - well, it was so damn tasty and huge. The breading was perfect. Crunchy, tasty, and not greasy at all. I had the haddock - it was white, flaky, and tasted as good fish should. Not a drop of grease to be seen - just flavor and goodness. The fries were good as well but nothing could shine as much as the fish. The mushy peas were what mushy peas usually are to me - meh. There were some vinegary condiments that came with the meal - one malty and one garlicky. They didn't have too much flavor to them - my fries had to soak to get any of the flavor at all. But the fish - I hope my pics give a good feel for the meal. I can't wait to come back and have some more of this amazing food. read more

We arrived in Paddington hungry and was looking for a quick and easy dinner. This seemed like the only fish and chips restaurant in the area and looked reasonably priced. We sat outside the restaurant because we didn't want the greasy oily smell in our clothes and hair. Fish came out fast. They also serve calamari, chicken, grilled fish and salads. Great food and service! First time in UK and found this little gem close to where we stayed so we decided to try the well known UK staple dish, fish and chips. I just had a wonderful fish and chips meal while sitting outside watching London go by. I had a battered cod fillet and it was fabulous. The fish was flaky and the batter wasnt over powering. It was a 2 minute walk from the Paddington Station and well worth it. The only drawback was that my waiter spoke almost no English and I ordered by pointing at what I wanted on the menu. There was only one waitress the whole time we were there that was border line rude. She never cracked a smile to any customers, not just us, as we observed. I am not sure why this place is rated as high as it is. Went in there with a party of 5. We had several varieties of fish. I had the haddock. It came with a nice golden crust, but the skin was left on fish. The person eating with me ordered RockFish which took 20 minutes to prepare (they did tell us this time for cooking). When it came, it still had the bones in it. It also had a lot of dark meat. All fish we got still had the mudline portion of the fish still left with it. This might be normal for Britain, however, it was not my standard of what a fish meal should be. I also ordered the coleslaw but it was way overuse of Mayo in the preparation. Stopped by for lunch, no one asked me what I wanted, yet they brought me food. Since it was fish and chips, I ate it. Asked for bottled water. When I was leaving they overcharged me, even charging me for a coke that I did not order, nor did I have. Then developed an attitude when I pointed out what I did have. First time in London and the first restaurant my family and I tried. We ordered the mix platter and a grilled sea bass. The food tasted fresh and the grilled sea bass was just perfect, not too dry, just right! The waitress was nice and friendly too. Although the fries tasted a bit too soft for my liking and too thick but my family members quite liked it and thought it has a really strong potato taste whatever that means. The price wasn't expensive either and quite affordable considering it was London. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this place! read more

If you came here for the fish, you're in the right place. If you're actually looking for *good* chips to go with the fish, you'll be disappointed. If you're from the US and don't like In-n-Out fries, you'll hate these even more. They're like *larger* versions of what I&O offers. I ate the fish, the haddock, which was excellent and nicely-sized, tried a few of the chips, gave up, and left sacrificing only £6.95 (£5.45 if you come for the lunch special). Good ones are hard to find especially when you don't feel like walking more than ten paces from your hotel. Luckily the Sussex Fish Bar was only two doors down and within five minutes I was smuggling a stinky bag of greasy goodness through the lobby of my 4* "boutique" hotel. Good rather than outstanding, they hit the spot with crispy fat chips and a lightly battered piece of cod that tasted fresh enough for me to question whether it had been frozen. I've been holding off this review for far too long. I went to Sussex Fish Bar when I went gallivanting across Europe over the summer. It's in a very touristy part of town, so the prices are a little higher, but I would definitely recommend this place. In fact, when I return next summer, this will be the 1st place I go to. When I walked out of Paddington Station and checked into my motel, the first thing I looked for was a fish and chips place. Luckily, this place wasn't too hard to find. You can even see it on Google Earth. I ordered the fish and chips with extra malt. They wrapped it up for me and I took it to the park across the street to enjoy it. It was mouth watering. It was a flavor I can't describe, but I'll sure as hell try. The fish had a freshness to it, that you can't find in AZ (where I live) and by the time I walked to the park, the malt vinegar had soaked into the fish and treated me to a salty/sweet/vinagery creaminess. I still think about it, when I'm craving fish and chips. If your in the Paddington area, definitely check this place out! read more

They don't provide tartar sauce, but they do give you classic and onion flavored vinegar, along with ketchup, mayo, and lemon. I used all 5 in different combinations to try to get through the batter and get some flavor into the actual fish with mild success. The chips are pretty good, and the meat pie was tasty! We decided to go to this restaurant because it was recommended to us. We went and it was all fine until we got the food. Our fish was over cooked, greasy, and unappetizing. My dads fries had a long hair in it. Our waitress was nice about it at first, then we saw her talking to her staff and they all thought we put the hair in the food. At this point we were about done with the meal. Our waitress came over for the bill and was extremely rude. My second trip into London started off with a bang. This is probably the fourth time I've had fish and chips in the UK and I never have it back in America b/c the stuff is too good here. I ordered the medium cod meal, which was prepared really well (applying the lemon on the fish makes it so much worth it). Other than the fact that my metabolism is catching up with me, I would definitely recommend this establishment. The proximity to London Paddington and the relaxing atmosphere inside serve as an added bonus to above-average food. Visited this takeout fish place which has a couple of tables inside. We were early, so we got a table. Later arrivals had to wait, so take a note. Wait staff were very active and busy and didn't take a break while we were there. The place appeared spotlessly clean and neat with the menu on plastic laminated cards as well as on an illuminated menu board above the serving area. You can see the fish for takeout orders in the glass serving line, but dine-in orders get their food cooked (fried or grilled) fresh. I ate a codfish fish-and-.order and it was very good. Plenty of good fries -- they did not stint. Minor complaint was the malt vinegar was some wholesale brand and didn't have much vinegar bite or malty flavor. Try the mint tea for something different that is quite good. I'd go back for more, but we're leaving London tomorrow. Oh well, maybe next time. read more
