This London chain was recommended to us by our friends who are longtime UK residents. We figured we had to try proper British fish and chips after tasting a couple of so-so meals. Poppies seemed like the perfect iconic choice with its old-school North London charm and 1940-50s repurposed memorabilia which feels like stepping back in time. The servers were attentive right from the start. We were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived quickly as everything was out within 10-minutes, piping hot and freshly cooked. My wife and I shared the classic cod fish and chips 4/5. The portion was decent, the fish was flaky inside with a nice crispy batter, and the chips were golden and tasty - nothing greasy, which was a plus. Loved the capped mini-cup of tartar sauce. This came with a side salad with crispy vegetables and creamy honey-mustard sauce. We stuck to the timeless Caramel Sticky Toffee Pudding (with a scoop of ice cream) smothered with warm sauce. We were walking around Camden Markets in the morning, decided to come to Poppies to try their 'famous' fish & chips. There was a lot of signage around Camden pointing to this location. They even had signage around the outside of the restaurant flaunting how their fish & chips won awards. The service was decent here, but there was nothing super memorable about the service. Instead of just fish and chips, we decided to order and share the Seafood Platter so that we could sample other deep fried seafood items. Our overall impression of the seafood was the fact that it was rather bland. We had to use copious amounts of salt to add flavor to the deep fried foods. The fries were akin to 'steak fries' we have back at home in the states. We honestly had better quality fish & chips back at home. As mentioned previously, fish and chips are a fairly safe meal to order here. I mean, how can you go wrong with a plate of fries and a two fillets of fish? Sometimes one large one? This place had a very 1950's American diner vibe along with a view from my seat of hot dogs in water in heated kitchen counter area. Now, my favorite is the Mayfair Chippy for Fish and Chips. This place comes in a close second and gets points for longevity. The service was good and quick but not hurried. They serve the Fish & Chips with homemade tartar in cute little reusable jars (good for the environment!). I read the history on the menu and it sounds like quite a story. I'm always glad to support locally owned small businesses and especially ones that have been around for a long time. Go Pops! Give this place a try. Poppies seem like a pretty popular spot and there is one that is located in Camden Town. This is a place that sells your traditional fish and chips. Ordered a grilled codfish in small size when I came here for dinner because the large was sold out. Overall even the small size is actually pretty big. I ordered the grilled version because I don't want it to be fried but they do have that option and I think many people do order this fish fried. I like the option of being able to choose and the fish itself was super tasty! Service was one of the best that we have had on this vacation trip! We also ordered a beef pie as well to try it out and that was pretty flavorful and the crust on the outside was nice and crisp. After walking around Camden Market on a chilly day, we knew we needed lunch somewhere indoors to warm up, thus we found ourselves stumbling upon Poppies. After hearing about this place from others and seeing a couple signs advertising them, we knew the fish n chips were the MUST order item here. Unfortunately they ran out of the original cod fish n chips so we settled for their haddock. But to our surprise the haddock was quite tasty and still cooked to crispy perfection. My only complaint though was that all of their food just seemed to be a tad under seasoned, some salt and malt vinegar was greatly needed. The tartar sauce was good as well, but their containers are too small to dip anything in it. The chips had a nice crispy exterior, but fluffy and hot on the inside, overall solid. The store itself is rather small so if it's busy, takeaway is probably easier. Luckily for us, we came at a good time as it wasn't overly crowded. I love to eat and I am a true foodie tourist in every sense of the word, but I'm sorry to say that Poppies let me down. I had been looking forward to trying it (and added it to my self-guided foodie tour of London), but it turned out to be not much more than a disappointment. The atmosphere is boisterous (loud 50s music) and the employees are friendly. We chose to takeaway our order and sat outside the restaurant on the benches provided. The volume of the music isn't the issue. Even the prices are fair (for London) and the portions are more than adequate. My fish and chips both tasted fresh. So what's the issue? It's the cooking technique. Our fish was so overcooked that it had an almost rubbery texture. It wasn't inedible but it wasn't great (and a fish and chips stand should know the appropriate amount of time to cook their fish). The chips were obviously fresh but they lacked any sort of satisfying crispy crunch. I didn't flat out hate this meal but it certainly isn't something I'd go out of my way to return to or to recommend to anyone else. What a let down. I made Poppies the first stop after arriving in London. I had it bookmarked and on my itinerary to make it to Poppies once I stepped foot in London. Essentially it's just fried fish or other fried seafood and chips (fries for us in the States). We asked the waitress for suggestions and portion sizes decided on the larger sizes and different types of fish. We also ordered an assortment of drinks, one of which was really good was the ginger beer. I love ginger beer and this was actually really good and I would order it again. As for the actual fish and chips dishes, the large portion was way larger than the waitress told us. Great that we got more food but we could've done without ordering two orders which meant we were left with a ton of leftover fish and chips. Regardless of which type of fish we chose, the flavor was about the same. I say it was a bit bland and more breaded that I had hoped. The chips were fluffy and decent but way too many spuds for my liking. We also got an order of the Chicken Pie which is pretty much a Chicken Pot Pie with chips on the side as well. A lot smaller than expected and about the same price as the huge plates of fish...I don't know why...The pie was also not hot enough and wasn't very flavorful as well. Coming back to the service. The waitress first told us the portions were a lot smaller than they actually were. Next, they were not very attentive throughout our meal and did not come by to ask how things were.
