Located about 0.3 miles from our hotel in the Camden area. Came in without a reservation but was seated right away. We were craving for fish and chips which is a staple or must have when in London. Each main fish course comes with unlimited chips or baked potatoes and we opted for the chips. We had the following: - cod fillet - haddock fillet - soup of the day which was the tomato bisque - prawn tempura - calamari - coke zero - regular coke It's strange how the regular coke cost £1 more than the coke zero. For a group of 4, we planned to have the North Seafood platter which comprises of cod and Haddock bites, Calamari, Prawns, Sardines, Scampi, Salt and Pepper Squid for £44.00 but our server insisted that it's only good for 2 people. That serving really was big but as per the lady server it's only good for 2 so we ended up getting individual plates. We also overheard the same lady server insisted on what the other table should order stating that serving is too small for that other table. In fairness, food was really good. Solid fish and chips in the Bloomsbury area! We were staying in the hotel area not too far away and got takeaway here twice to eat it outside a local pub. The portions are super generous and the chips are the best we had during our entire visit! There were two sides, one for inside dining and one for takeaway. We didn't eat inside but it looked nice. The takeaway line goes rather quickly as they are frying everything fresh. The fish is pretty good, but the chips were writing home about, and make sure to put plenty of vinegar on them! There were a couple of bars that weren't serving food in the evening, so we took it right down the road and it was still steaming fresh. The staff were super friendly and were cranking out orders as fast as they could. Just coming back to say that years later and many other fish and chips places tried and this place is still hands down the best one I've had in London. Excellent fish and superior chips but also the staff are just so dang nice. I arrived late for my reservation which was the last seating of the night on a Saturday and not only did they not hassle me about it, they welcomed me in without even flinching. I never felt rushed (even though I did because I was NOT going to be the last patron left in that restaurant) and everything tasted as hot and fresh as it always does. Super friendly people here in this two part fish and chip shop (one side is all take away the other side is a quaint sit down restaurant). There's a ton of fish to choose from and you can get it fried or grilled. I got the cod which is a long fillet batter and fried, though not particularly super hot or crispy. You'll find North Sea Fish Restaurant a short walk from Kings Cross on a quiet unassuming street. Inside however, it's a bustling eatery. You'll wait to be greeted and seated at their entry. Food: Fish and chips! I had the medium cod combo which comes with a basket of perfectly tender and crisp chips. The fish was quite large for a medium, with a delicate batter and a good fry on it. Homemade tartar sauce is provided in a bowl on the table, and it was the right blend of tart and creamy. Bread pudding was a treat. A large slice filled with raisins, was surrounded by a light custard sauce. Service: There were four waitstaff, but as they were busy, it took a good 10 minutes before I was acknowledged and seated. I had a small table by the bar with one chair. Not the solo diner's dream, but I at least had a good view of the restaurant. Orders were taken quickly, and food comes out equally fast. Drinks were refilled when requested. Cost: Medium cod plate and a bread pudding ran about £22. Overall: Make a booking if there's more than one of you. My son and I were staying near King's Cross station and wanted fish and chips. After a quick search North Sea Fish Restaurant came up along with its many awards and recognition. I was visiting the land of fish-and-chips after years of eating half-decent fare in the US. Anticipative fever was running high. Now for the routine Londoner, a simple paper bag full of chips and cod ain't nothing to get hyped about and given the staple nature, it shouldn't be. Eulogy aside, the fish was very steamy and so were the chips (I went to the takeaway store). A surprise was the tartar and ketchup sachets being priced extra. They added well to the cod and chips respectively. The portions were large and I could not finish the bag (for some reason the fish and chips portions in California are stingy, like for an appetizer). Large Portions of Fish, unlimited bottomless fries. Pretty packed when we got here, but luckily we scored a table. There was a couple in front of us that was waiting when we got there, but we both got seated at the same time. Additionally, other people were turned away after we got the last spot. Basically must make reservations especially since place is so small. This place is as good as it gets for bang for the buck. If I had been a little hungrier, I definitely could have taken advantage of the bottomless fries. GF ended up getting the cod, while I got the large haddock. I don't recommend getting the large as I didn't see much different in size between the small and the large. Cod: GF found some tiny bones in the cod, so she didn't seem to enjoy it. Haddock: Wow this thing was amazing. The fish was overly oily, which made the fish fry/batter lose some crispiness, but it was still super yummy. Out of the three fish and chips place I had in whilst in London, this was by far hands down the best. The portion of cod was generous, fried to a nice crunchy crisp with tender juicy insides and accompanying chips made for a very hearty meal. Fish was fried to order as it came piping hot. Large filet of fried fish perfect for two! My fiance loved the tartar sauce that came with the fried haddock. There were a few tiny bones in both which made me kinda paranoid the rest of the meal but nothing large enough to leave a mark. The chips are unlimited but after our first serving we were already full-- they were also DELICIOUS!!! If I could redo the experience I probably would have tried a different type of fish. However since haddock is the typical go to for fish and chips I figured it was the way to go. This was a tad pricey but the area is far from a typical pub setting. Out of all the places I've travelled and all the restaurants I've ever dined at--which includes several sketchy restaurants in rural China--my dining experience at North Sea Fish Restaurant has by far been the worst, and it's not even close. The sub-par food might be the only saving grace of this place. The service is terrible, and the security is even worse. A woman got pick-pocketed sitting at the closest table to the front door by an intruder and very little was done about it...other than giving her a phone, an old tablet, and some post-it notes to sort it out herself. The neighborhood has some foot traffic, but not enough to call this place safe by any means. Additionally, the waiter who served us was extremely rude. He didn't understand physical and spacial human boundaries at all. He would continually interrupt our meal to talk about "identity security," and on one occasion he reached across our table, a good 8 inches above my food, to make several unnecessary hand gestures while divulging into a passionate rant on identity security. Moreover, we never received a portion of our order, and were subsequently charged for it without much of an apology. Save your money, protect your identity, and save your stomach space. There are infinitely better alternatives in the area to try. read more

The jumbo fish is really big. We got to the restaurant at 7pm and the waiter (super nice) told us that they probably would not be able to seat us until 9pm. Two couples were turned away in front of us as well. The restaurant looked nice and traditional inside. Just next door is their take away location, which is apparently much cheaper than their eat in menu. We ordered cod and haddock, as well as chips. They had chips and a few pieces of fried fish available and ready for purchase but we had to wait 15 minutes while they prepared and fried our cod and haddock. This was worth the wait as the fish was piping hot when we got it. We didn't want to walk all the way to our hotel so we ate it sitting on a small bench right outside the restaurant. During the 20 minutes we were eating, there were probably 30 people coming in and out to order take away. Some locals ordered just chips, which they had the option of adding salt to. We ate the cod first, which was very meaty and tender. We knew the fish was fresh and not frozen by the way the meat was falling off each other. The haddock had a much fishier taste and less tender than the cod. I'm glad we got a chance to eat both. The chips were so good! read more

Find myself in two minds about this place. Reputed as one of the very best traditional fish restaurants in London, I usually seem to come away vaguely dissatisfied. The decor is enjoyably old-fashioned with no concessions to modernity. The fish is fresh and well cooked, with crisp thin batter, perhaps a little too thin. The chips are fine, though again seem to lack a little "substance". The home-made tartare sauce is delicious and a real bonus here. You can also get a decent glass of wine or beer. This is my 150th review and my first London review, and what better way to start by reviewing a place that serves an icon of British cuisine for the past 100 years or so: Fish and Chips. Located in the Bloomsbury neighbourhood of London, this place is divided into two sections, the restaurant section and a section for take away. My friend, his roommate and I went to the take away section because I noticed that getting fish and chips is cheaper. We got some Fried Cod and a good portion of Chips to share among ourselves. Since my friend's roommate is a devout Muslim from Oman, he wanted to make sure that the fish was prepared "halal" (he was very adamant about it), so we asked if they could prepare it "halal". The staff over there seemed to be happy and obliged to do so, but we had to wait longer compared to the typical patrons who wanted to get take away. So if you are Muslim, and want "halal" Fish and Chips, this is also a good option. After getting the fish and chips, I put some vinegar and salt on them, and started to eat. The fried fish was pretty tasty, the batter on the outside had a nice good crisp, while the fish itself was soft, and could be tastier with the Tartar Sauce. As for the chips, they were also pretty tasty. With the salt, the chips also had a good crisp that would make the chips almost addicting to eat. They use a lot of paper, which is supposedly the traditional way to wrap up Fish and Chips. The paper is fairly thick, so it's pretty good at absorbing the grease. Overall, this is a pretty good place to get some tasty Fish and Chips in London, and I would definitely come back to grab some good take away. And I did not have to spend more than £7 for a generous helping. read more

This is the best fish and chips I've ever had. I chose the jumbo fried haddock cuz I'm a hungry hungry hippo and had a cider to wash it down with. The fish is perfectly cooked; flaky and delicate. The fried breading was light and ultra crispy without being too crunchy. The chips are your standard steak fries and definitely need salt, vinegar and/or ketchup for extra flavor. But the star of the show is certainly the fish. The staff is very helpful and friendly despite having to deal with our rowdy touristy group. The dining space is very homey and comfortable. All future fish and chip meals will be compared to North Sea as the benchmark. read more

The place was pretty full but they had a no-show so they gave us their table. We've eaten here before, back in '15 and my review remains the same. The place was pack with only a table for 2 left. Eventually, a bigger table opened up and we were moved because the area they seated us in was a little inconvenient. Ordered the cod filet and the haddock filet. Both came out delicious. The haddock one had a little more flavors than the cod one. Both came with chips (fries) or boiled potatoes and we got one of each. Both was also good! The fish was a good size...they give you a while half of the fish. When a old friend suggested a reunion dinner at a fish and chip restaurant, my first thought was 'really?!?' But all my qualms were for naught as this was a great place for a fish meal! You can get the old standards here of cod and chips but it's the other fish options that are the stars. You can actually get whole fish on the bone (woo hoo!), either battered or grilled. I got the grilled lemon sole which was a monster whole fish that was perfectly cooked. No dry overcooked fish here! The main drawback here is the service. We got a few smiles from a couple of the waitstaff but it's mostly surly, grumpy, 'why are you bothering me' attitudes. The back room also got uncomfortably warm. Tucked away about 10 minutes walk from the bustling, over crowded Kings Cross, is this lovely, homey fish restaurant. I have been coming here since I was young, and for me I just get a feeling of comfort as it's a place which reminds me of when I used to come to London with my parents during my summer holidays. However, even if it is your first time, the place simply engulfs you with a sense of familiarity and ease, and this could be due to the fact that not only is it unpretentious in anyway (except for maybe one of the waitresses who works there who can from time to time be quite off!), North Sea has been run and belongs to the same family since it first opened in 1977. This joint first started as a local fish and chip shop, but due to its popularity, and quite rightly so, it is now a restaurant with a take-away establishment right next door. The menu a nice array of fish, which you can have cooked in various ways, so as not to limit one to the usual battered fish. I last had grilled cod and chips with mushy peas. The cod was just the right texture, the chips were chunky and the peas where hot and the right kind of mushy! By the way, the portions are huge so unless you can handle it, I would recommend sharing the large portion of chips and sides they give you! Eating fish and chips at the restaurant itself is not the cheapest, but the quality and overall ambiance all put together is very pleasant. read more
