Employees were very nice and helpful. I had never been inside of a Sutherlands before, but came inside after looking at some of their plants outside in the parking lot. The front of the store seemed like they were renovating a bit or moving displays around. They have a small area there in between the restrooms that is a single dog washing station! They seem to have a nice selection of different products, and had I not been in a rush, I would have loved to look around more. read more

I used to be a pretty loyal sutherland's customer. I am building my own home, and I run a general contracting business. I guess I should have driven my work truck to Sutherlands the other night, since after buying a couple hundred bucks worth of stuff there, I made the deeply nested mistake of meeting an old friend at the Denny's across the way. I would say I parked between 7 and 8 and by 11 my car had been towed. Have you ever stood in in the rain, in the dark, in a lonely, empty, dark west SLC neighborhood with your body in a 5 star panic clench because it's full of Moons Over My-hammy, dippin' dots, and burnt, 72 hour old coffee? Well, in the words of Jimi Hendrix in his under-rated title track to his 1967 album, "Are you experienced," - I have. Home depot has contractor express lanes, so I think I'm going to chalk it up to lessons learned and go all in there. Maybe pick up some of those beautiful, home depot exclusive Milwaukee pack-out modular tool boxes next week, that's about 1500 bucks not spent at sutherlands. Actually, I may up my star rating, now that I've spent more time at the competition, this dingy sutherlands that mostly functions as the wendover fun bus parking lot during the day when I normally try to use it showed me its character and I'm saving time and money by avoiding it. When I think about the effort required for this to happen, that the late manager, who I imagine as a slightly more carhart clad dwight schrute, looked out the store front, saw two cars in the farthest, most ambiguous spots in the lot, roughly like getting towed from the back deck at a walmart (a store that welcomes off hours parking AND offers surprising values on hardware), and, like, picture him furrowing his brow, his reptilian, vestigial hind brain engaging and dumping adrenaline into his system, and he runs through the store, grabbing each night stocker in turn, shaking them and asking them "Do you drive a 1988 mercury cougar from before the body redesign to sub-compact that is technically worth less than the tow fee but you hold onto it because it's paid off and people in this valley drive like the extras in Fury Road and it's surprisingly powerful for a late-80s land yacht with almost as much trunk room as as an el camino?" And after each downtrodden, gakked out night worker stammers out a "no" while imagining joining the international workers of the world in fully realized, vivid, technicolor, that sad little bilous goblin of a functionary looks at his own funhouse reflection in the chrome front of an over-priced smart refrigerator (seriously, i know i'm out of eggs when the carton is empty, that's not a 2200 dollar function), and snears "Looks like we got ourselves....a tow!" Then he immediately texts his significant other, you know, "Don't roll over and start snorin' after your stories are over tonight, Randy Beth, I got to flex the smallest bit of petty, sad institutional power over my tiny, scabby little fiefdom, so it doesn't matter that we're out of cialis because it's the end of the month! Wipe down the ceiling mirrors, pound a couple extra benadryl and head for the sunken place, because daddy is on his way home!" Well I hope it was worth it, Eustace Ray, I hope you enjoyed it as much as the actual regional management enjoys laughing at your applications for promotion every year. You're never going to get past one shift and one store and you start more conversations by leaving rooms than by walking into them. To paraphrase 2006's hater of the year, silky johnson, I don't even know you and I hate you. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you, and only you. I hope you catch something from your own filthy store bathroom sink, something that rides upstream during your 3pm, 30 minute "deuce and cry about how things are turning out" sesh and into your tear ducts and eats your optic nerves so you can't even enjoy getting blotto on vodka and hi life spritzers while staring at football anymore. I believe in shopping local and I live closer to Sutherland than Lowe's or Home Depot. They never have everything I need, but I shopped there first. I will never go back after being charged 1.00 for every 3.29 refund for corner beads I bought to many of by direction of my contractor. I've become a regular at Sutherland's because of their really cheap prices & their frequent buyer card. It's not often that hardware stores have a frequent buyer program at all so that's really what stands out for me. I've spent more time and money on tools and supplies here than any other home improvement store. It's because they have so many options and they're just cheaper. The employees also seem more happy and knowledgeable which is really helpful when you're not sure which random conduit to buy or which pine boards were "new" (freshly cut) & local, etc. Anyway, make sure to say hi if you decide to stop by because this is where I live now. read more

Didn't have either of the items I came in for but have outfitted me adequately in the past.

Not a bad store, and maybe even useful for the lumber enthusiast or deal seeker. This place is like an Ozark cousin to Home Depot. They have the same stuff, but things tend to be cheaper in both price and quality, with brands you haven't heard of or thought went out of business. For example, Dutch Boy paint, which I think I'd last heard from sometime in the mid-80s. For a Wednesday morning, there were tons of cars in the parking lot. Most of them were pickup trucks, so I think there's good deals to be had for general contractors or lumber guys. The other major demographic seemed to be men in their 60s and 70s, perhaps more willing to sacrifice product longevity for a little cash reduction in the short term. There was only one register open, though a line of 4-5 customers had formed. No self check outs. They have a good selection, and I would be happy shopping here for little things if I were passing by. They did have some really good deals on products that looked a bit sketchy to me, but sometimes you just need the cheapest thing possible to get by. read more

After a bad experience with a contractor, we had to finish our basement on our own. We needed a certain style of door and Sutherlands was the only place in Salt Lake and Utah County to have them in stock. We were able to get half the doors we needed, however the other half had to be special ordered. There were some manufacture delays due to various reason, so our doors got in a bit later than expected. This would've been an additional frustrating situation, however Paul and Team did all they could to make it right, even though it wasn't their fault. We were against a tight deadline and Paul was willing to have his team build a door for us if needed. Luckily all the doors ended up coming in with plenty of time. He even had our last 2 doors delivered to us, one at a time, as soon as they came in. We live about 25 minutes away. Paul and his crew showed great customer service. They went above and beyond of what's expected. My wife and are are VERY grateful for them. I DOUBT we would've received the same treatment at one of the big chains. Our experience with them has been a bright spot in a dark situation we were in. Thank you!!! read more

Sutherlands reminds me of simpler times. Back when you would run to the hardware store with your grandpa to get something to work on the yard with. Maybe that's why I like it so much, but try it out and you'll see. It's no where near as large as a Lowe's or Home Depot, but to me that's where it's appeal comes in. The staff helpful, and more than happy to throw in their expert, and personal experiences with products, and tools. The selection of course is a little lacking, but I would personally go out of my way to shop here, and pick up the pieces I can't find somewhere else just to support this fine establishment. read more

Love this place! I've been a regular customer for years, and I still get pleasantly surprised when I find something here that isn't carried by the other two big box stores, or when something is cheaper (which is very often the case). For example, I needed to put up some metal soffit material on my covered porch. I called HD, Lowes, and a few other places and nobody carried it. THey all said it's a specialty item that would have to be ordered. Then I go to Sutherlands and they have it in stock. Was able to buy the exact quantity I needed. What I especially like about Sutherlands is the occaisional oddball items that you don't expect a store like this to carry, like blue jeans (great deal), and sometimes bulk food items (sacks of oranges, potatoes, onions, etc.) Also had to replace my evap cooler and Sutherlands price was cheaper for the same model than everywhere else. True that selection isn't the greatest on some items, and sometimes (rarely) they don't carry what you need, but in general, I love this place! read more

Very easy to get to, presuming you're not going eastbound on North Temple (quick U-turn at Redwood isn't so bad), spacious, easy parking, there is very little to dislike about this now that construction is done. The inside is also very easy to navigate. Things aren't necessarily laid out for convenience, but it is fairly easily to find and it's not so large as one can't easily walk around. There is also a ton of selection here, including some scalloped edging that neither of the two larger chains, in ANY of their locations taking up more real estate, could be bothered to have. Their garden section is equally fantastic and odds are pretty good that I may be moving my former shopping for that are from Smith's to Sutherland's. Their selection for garden stuff is both massive and highly impressive. Most certainly any home improvement items will be obtained here. Sutherland's has been a solid standby for a lot of years and they have really amped up this store. Well worth passing up the big boys to go here and pricing tends to be less as well, all the incentive in the world to keep it local. read more

Sutherlands is like the Kroger version of The Home Depot. It's not as great but it gets the job done. This location is heavily understaffed and customer service is nonexistent. Although, they have a good selection of wood and flowers in season. read more

I have been an ongoing patron of Sutherlands for over 10 years & have invested in several projects. This year, I moved into the apartment complex adjacent to Sutherlands. I have enjoyed the services of Sutherlands, but have recently become very unsatisfied with their towing partnership service to Central Valley Towing. My friend parked in an area that Sutherlands considers their Employee Parking Lot. To be clear, there are signs clearly posted stating that cars will be towed at owner's expense and my friend was at fault by law. What is NOT stated on the signs is any information for the towing company or how to contact them. It happened in after hours and my friend and I had to call the police to determine the location of the tow company. From the moment that we contacted the Central Valley Towing, communication despite our best efforts was a downward spiral. These were some of the controlling techniques used by the towing company * Person gave us the location to pick up the car, in a very rude tone. * He gave us a total for retrieved the card (did not mention prices regarding cash vs. credit card) * Did not give a time quote for retrieving the car (nor did we know we needed one) * Upon arrival at the location we called and the girlfriend of the person we talked to rudely said that her boyfriend had given us a time quote for when they would be there to pick up the car. * We waited patiently for a half hour for the two people to arrive and let us in. * We had to invite ourselves into the trailer to discuss the car (they drove past us, knowing that we were there to get the car, didn't say anything to us as they walked by us to go into the trailer * We walked into the trailer and said "we are here to pick up the car (along with our information)" This was met with a tone of verbal hostility as they asked if we were paying with credit card or cash. When we said that we were paying with credit card, they then informed us, "Oh, well if you are paying with card, then there is a 3% interest charge. We had no choice but to agree to the fee. This surcharge felt very abusive. They could have told us this on the initial conversation and we would have brought cash. * I mentioned that myself and friends and many other people had parked in that lot before. The boyfriend was itching with excitement as he said, "I know! I've towed 16 cars just this week!" He was so proud of it. * The girlfriend interjected with her excitement with other qualifying comments. Meanwhile her hands were shaking with that jitter of "I'm looking for a fight." My friend and I just brushed off their provocations to make a scene. We knew that they had all the power and could get away with whatever they wanted. This is the kind of event that sits with you for days and weeks. This was four days before Christmas and left a very bad manipulative taste of events. And while most of this was on the towing company and their terrible manors and forced control and lack of communication skills, I can't help but have distaste for Sutherlands playing a part in the partnership and lack of informative marking. I will not be sharing my patronage again with them anytime soon. read more

Went here because it's close to my house. I went straight to the customer service desk because I didn't want to wander the store looking for what I needed. I was looking for a stud sensor. She hesitated a little bit then said aisle 40 in the back. Well isle 40 is the furnace isle? Ummmm ok if she didn't know then either find someone that does or say I'm not sure, instead of wasting my time. I walked to the tool area because I thought it could be there. Some employees were just standing around talking to each other not helping any customers. Needless to say I found what I was looking for with no help of the employees. I'd drive 15 minutes more to Lowe's or Home Depot next time. read more

They have some things that HD doesn't have which is why I'm there occasionally. The bad though, there return policy, really slow, have to go to two different registers to get your money back, and you have to have your receipt, I don't believe they can search your card for the transaction. But the biggest turn off is that they advertise there age discrimination! They have a big sign that says you'll get a better price if you're old. Because of that I'll try my best not to have to go here. read more

I bought floors here over a year ago and had a lot left over. I got a discount for paying cash. Over a year I realized I didnt need the rest called to see if I can return the extra. They let me return them without a problem with a receipt. On top of everything that discount they gave me they never took it of the refund. Wonderful customer service. Sutherlands is great. They have a good selection of your normal hardware store stuff, but then you can buy old man blue jeans, rawhide bones, bulk candy and a mattress. And if they sell it here it's cheaper than Home Depot or Lowes every time. read more
