Dahlia lovers, please do yourself a favor and visit these fields! You will be welcomed with vast amounts of flowers, explosions of color, and stunning views! I visited toward the end of August and the fields were at 75% bloom. I had a wonderful time walking around and enjoying the gorgeous flowers. Be sure to bring the following items if you visit the dahlia fields: - Hat: I visited on a warm, sunny day in August. The fields are beautiful, but there is no shade as you walk through. - Sunscreen: This goes along with a hat-- you don't want to get sunburn as you enjoy the beautiful dahlias. - Water bottle: On a hot day, you definitely don't want to get dehydrated! - Comfortable shoes: You will be walking through the dirt paths as you visit the fields, so be sure to bring your most comfortable shoes. - Money: There's a cute souvenir shop and also a few food trucks available with yummy snack. Most of these accept cash, card, Apple Pay, etc. There's also a covered area with tables for you to sit down, enjoy your snacks, and rest, especially on a warm day. There was plenty of parking when I visited on a Thursday, however, I can see how it could get busy and crowded on a weekend. Regardless, there were several parking areas, plus it's free!! The mercantile is such an amazing gift shop...not just for little old Canby, but for anywhere! They carry a lot of beautiful and quality products, including my kids' latest obsession - Jellycat plush! All of the staff were extremely kind and patient, fielding our many questions and helping us out, even holding the store open for a few extra minutes while we made our final decisions. Great spot to view tons of flowers and shop in a cute gift shop. The dahlias are done for the season by May ish so plan your visit accordingly if you'd like to see fields full. The gift shop is full of women owned company products, and local artists work. They're great to browse. There are patio seats and a small koi pond in front. Dahlias for days! Swan Island Dahlias is a great place to visit for anyone who loves flower gardens and of course, dahlias. The large field has every dahlia that you can imagine and beyond. We had a great time here, admiring the beautiful flowers. Swan Island Dahlias was about half an hour away from Portland. It was easy to get to, despite being confused as to why GPS was navigating us through a neighborhood to get here. But hey, it's cool to get a tour of Oregon. Compared to other flower festivals I've been to, Swan Island Dahlias was the most laidback one I've been to. Parking was plenty even with the many people here. The large field is easy to walk around and every aisle has a label of what kind of dahlia is growing there. There wasn't any staff around to make sure people didn't go into the garden beds, but you shouldn't be an asshole and do that anyway. Let the flowers bloom! In addition to a large field to walk around, there is a more garden setting where you can see the dahlias all together, giving you a better sense of what they look like with others. There was also a specific garden that's designated for new varieties of dahlias that they're currently testing out, which was cool to see. At the festival, there were multiple gift shops, a beer truck, food truck, live music and an area where you can buy dahlias. For three bunches it was about $21, which was a great deal. The staff kept also replenishing the stock, so there were plenty of dahlias to choose from and take home. This festival was free admission, which you can't beat. I enjoyed visiting this festival, especially to see the bright, colorful dahlias and learn about ones I had never seen before. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the Portland area and are a lover of flowers. Pictures can't do it justice, but you'll end up taking so many photos because of how beautiful the dahlias are here! read more

If you love Dahlias, wandering through the fields of brightly colored dahlias at Swan Island Dahlias is Heavenly! Rows and rows of so many varieties and colors, some flowers as big as dinner plates. Its absolutely breathtaking! Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers. It seems that every geometric shape can be found in the variety of leaves and nose of the Dahlia. Colors range from the brightest of brights - yellow, fuschia, red, purple, orange - to the palest of pinks.Some multi colored, stripe or tipped And the textures! That's my favorite part. Some have thin tubular leaves; some thin wispy spikes; others wide ribbon leaves; some tiny hexagon cones. Amazing thevariety! To the left of the Gift Shop is an area that looks like a more formal garden. Each section contains all the dahlia with the same first initial. This makes it so easy to identify the flower you like so you can purchase the tuber. The rows in the fields also have the name in front of each row so you can easily take a pic of the name and the flower. Names are so entertaining! Spoiled Brat, Daddy's Girl, Mango Fire, Smooches, First KISS, Marry Me and so many more! During the festival at the end of August it gets super crowded so if you want pictures without a lot of people, go in August before the festival starts. They are open every day except Wednesday. There is no charge to visit the fields, which is not the case with many farms, making this even more attractive for families and groups. For 2020, they had to cancel the festival but you can still go any day but Wednesday and enjoy the fields and visit the Gift Store for trinkets and gifts. The Farm Stand sells bouquets of fresh cut dahlias for $7. $20 gets you three bouquets. The Garden Shed has all the garden tools and supplies you need. There is plenty of whimsical yard art, too! Live music and food carts round out the festival feel. When there isn't a festival, there is a food truck in front of the gift shop that sells light meals, ice cream, drinks and snacks. There is plentyof parking in their driveway with extra parking in field. Attendants direct cars on crowded days. There are also several portable bathrooms by the Gift Shop. It's hot out there in the open field so wear a hat and sunscreen, comfy walking shoes and bring water. Then get lost in the flowers, breathe it all in, immerse yourself in nature! Enjoy!!! read more

Came here for the 2nd weekend of the festival! They have ample parking surrounding the dahlia farm. During the festival, there are plenty of employees/volunteers directing traffic. Most of the parking is in fields, so it can be quite dusty. There are some paved parking spots available up by the house, but they fill up fast! There is a large variety of dahlias to view throughout the property. The names of the varieties are posted on the end of each row. Not only are there various colors, but sizes as well. Their display room opens at 10. This is where you would go to order dahlias for yourself. There are catalogs available as soon as you enter the building. They have multiple food carts available, serving a variety of food, from kettle corn and hot dogs to Hawaiian BBQ. We arrived soon after having breakfast, so we weren't hungry enough to try any of the offerings. There is plenty of seating available near the food, some tables with umbrellas. It can be quite warm walking through the fields looking at the dahlias, so make sure to bring a sun hat or umbrella, and some water as there is little to no shade. We had a great time at the festival this year. We came early, so we missed some of the crowds forming later in the day. Love that they provide free parking and admission! We spent the morning visiting Swan Island Dahlias Farm in Oregon. This was my 2nd time and my daughter's first. Dahlias are such beautiful flowers. Since we moved to PNW I have become a fan and also grow 8 different varieties. I was slightly disappointment that the farm was not engulfed in vibrant colors, this is due to the late snow we had. But, during our visit we were able to see flowers we would like to grow. My daughter enjoyed the visit aong with our 12 year old granddaughter. No art vendors and only 1 food truck this time. I am sure as the blooms keep coming, more attractions will arrive. I do recommend that you make the drive, so you can to see these beautiful flowers. read more

I SO SO SO wish we had gone back IN season. We came here mid June and grabbed some dahlias, did the honor system and walked the garden and then purchased and left our money in the cash box. Many different sorts, and just so lovely to be around. We went before the festival weekends and was the right choice. Their website says "pets welcome" yet my emotional support dog "in training" and I were asked to leave. I will never support this business because of their uncalled for disrespect. The sales associate then asked me to leave. She also said "what is it used for and why do you think you need it?" I went here many moons ago with my mother and we had the best time. Last summer I decided to go with a friend and check it out. How fun that was! We stopped on the way for an amazing lunch and then went to the Dahlia Farm to walk off that amazing lunch! Parking was not a problem at all if you were patient and drive a little slow to hunt for a spot. We decided to grab some frozen lemonades from a vendor which were ridiculously delicious, and well priced. The gift shops were fun but honestly I think that they could do a little bit better and make more money by carrying a bit more of a variety. A lot of the stuff seemed kind of generic when they could probably carry a lot more Made in Oregon style stuff. Going downstairs to see all of the displayed dahlias was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend bringing some sort of fan with you though. It was ridiculously humid and the air down there doesn't seem to move. They would definitely benefit by installing a few fans to circulate the air because I almost felt faint after a few minutes. That's very crowded, but there's more going on, some food, cut flowers and an exhibit indoors. Every August, this place becomes a riot of color as the dahlias are in bloom. The Annual Dahlia Festival is a great local event. Free parking & admission gets you in to see the fields of flowers, the dahlia arrangements indoors (spectacular!) and they have live music and some food vendors, plus you can buy bunches of fresh-cut dahlias for cheap (1 for $7, 3 for $20). I purchased my very first dahlia tubers from Swan Island Dahlias. I chose them because they were one of the companies recommended by San Francisco Dahlia Society and opened up their sales fairly early. I bought 11 tubers and all 11 are growing healthy and strong. I bought 4 from another company and only 2 of the 4 survived. I have my first bloom and it looks just like the picture and is just gorgeous. One of my new-this-season dahlias took a turn for the worse yesterday. I contacted the local grower, and they suggested I dig it up and see how the tuber was looking. When I looked at it, it looked OK until I applied gentle pressure. Then it cracked open and it was all slimy inside. I am absolutely thrilled with their customer service. Review #259 - 2018 This place was one of the main reasons why I wanted to come visit Portland, OR, especially toward the end of August since that's when the dahlias are at their peak bloom. It's a bit of a drive out of the way, but so well worth it! When we showed up around 11 AM on Thursday, August 30th, there were a bunch of people there already, taking pictures and buying cut dahlias. It's such an amazing sight to behold, overlooking this 40-acre field of dahlias, which is the biggest and oldest dahlia field in the USA! I love flowers, and I've been to many rose gardens and tulip fields, but I've never seen so many dahlias in one spot in my life and it was just pure awesomeness. They actually hold a dahlia festival during the last weekend of August each year; however, I wasn't willing to fight the crowd so I decided to come before the festival. Parking was very convenient. The fact that we could jump in and out of the car to take pictures while the baby was asleep in the car was a very big bonus. Sadly, that meant we weren't able to enjoy the whole field, but it was beautiful enough that you don't actually need to see every square inch. Received tiny single tubers for a $350.00 order. About half sprouted. Swan Island claimed these tiny single tubers are an industry norm, however, that is not true. I have ordered over a hundred dahlias from at least seven different companies over the past five years and I have never received tiny pieces of the plant instead of the whole dahlia. If I'm sent 10% of a dahlia, I shouldn't be charged 100%. Seriously, some of these were the size of large marbles or quail eggs. read more

I adore flowers. When you visit the Swan Island Dahlias in Canby, you are in for a real treat. These flowers are some of the most amazing you'll ever see. The colors are incredibly vibrant. The size of the flowers range from small, to as big as your head. Or in more specific terms, some of them are about an inch across and some as big as almost 10 inches in diameter and wow, are they ever impressive! Because our awesome and warm summer month of August is when you'll find dahlias at their blooming peak, you'll appreciate that there is a tent filled with the most mind blowing arrangements of stunning dahlias and an escape from the afternoon sun. There are also a few food vendors outside. I couldn't resist a sugary elephant ear as I took in the glory of the dahlia fields. So this is what all the fuss is about? I've visited this nursery for picnics and strolls through the colorful rows of dahlias for years. But last month I finally made it to the annual Dahlia Festival. I was shocked at the amount of visitors on a Monday afternoon, since it was common during my prior visits to have the place all to myself. I like to traipse through the 40 acres of dahlias and pretend it is my own private garden. The annual festival runs for two weekends (Saturday, Sunday & Monday) at the end of August, just when the flowers are at their peak. And even though it was busy, they had things running smoothly. No admission fee and no parking fee. Did you hear that Tulip Fest? In all fairness to their Dutch floral counterpart, this festival is geared more towards adults, while the Tulip Fest is a better family event. Although there was a picnic area, a couple food booths, including the St. Josef's Wine-A-Bago!, and a bouncy house, there weren't a lot of kid-friendly activities. The Tulip Fest has more attractions to keep the young ones entertained. You visit this festival if you love flowers and want to be overwhelmed by their beauty on a grand scale. On a hot day, it was also refreshing to tour their underground display area with arranged flowers. But, walking through the gardens is really the main attraction, just stick to the marked paths. You can even bring your dog on a leash (just not through the indoor display rooms). Their main business is selling bulbs by mail order all over the world. They are the nation's largest dahlia grower and supplier. On a local scale, after my walks I pick up a bundle of fresh cut flowers from their farm stand to enjoy the rest of the week. I ordered approximately 20 dahlia tubers from Swan Island for the 2020 season and was very happy with my order. All but one tuber had a visible eye, tubers are plump and healthy, packaged carefully and arrived in great condition. Tubers that have enough crown attached will grow 95% of the time even if you can't find an eye but I do prefer getting tubers with visible eyes. They have an enormous variety of tubers and lots of dahlia growing information on their website. Tubers are priced similarly to at other dahlia farms and they also give you free shipping and bonus tubers if you spend a certain amount. Love. It takes many forms. Today, I've been thinking about that. I found an old photo of some dahlias on my phone and it made me think about this special flower, and of love. Love takes the form of flowers. It does. I know we all roll our eyes at cut flowers around Valentine's Day, but hear me out. Think of the tiny seed, the dormant bulb, or - in the case of dahlias - the unassuming little tuber that is the beginning of the flower. It seems so unlikely that something so beautiful survives such a rough and tumultuous beginning. That something so small can turn into something so beautiful. Yet that's the case, and Swan Island Dahlias is a perfect case in point. Their dahlias come packaged well, and are reasonably priced. And that's when the magic begins. Once you have the seed--the tuber--you plant it, you nourish it, and it will give amazing blooms. Each season you have to look after it, water it, and in my climate, dig it up and store the tuber over the winter. That may seem like a lot of work, but in the end you have something more beautiful than you could ever imagine. Something intricate, delicate, yet powerful. This is love. We plant something not knowing what exactly will come of it, and we tend it, and sometimes it may seem like work or that we planted it so long ago that surely it will never bloom. But I'm patient, and I know when it's a good seed, and it WILL blossom. Swan Island is definitely good seed. I ordered three varieties and even though last summer the timing was off on my order (my fault--I just ordered too late in the year, or too early for this year, if that's how you want to think about it), I just hope this year will bring better timing. Because dahlias are worth it. Every variety--dinner plate dahlias, small button dahlias, and everything in between. We went to the dahlia festival today and loved it! Dahlias as far as the eye can see outside as well as an indoor area with so many beautiful varieties and colors. You can order bulbs there or order online. Cut flowers are available for $5 a bunch - nice bargain. I like that you can view the dahlias in arrangements as well as in the fields. Makes it easier to choose based on height and size as well as color and flower head shape. We will definitely make it an annual trip to visit this dahlia festival! The greatest thing about this dahlia farm is that admission is free. You won't get the hugest impact from the flowers in photos as you would if you went to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, but hey, dahlias are pretty too. I've never been to the Dahlia Festival, but have paid a couple of visits where I was completely satisfied wandering through the fields, and getting some cut flowers to bring home with me. When August and September roll around, this is a fantastic place to just get out of the city.
