I could not imagine better customer service. While I'll note the awesome shade perennial selection they have (for dirt not just pond planting), Hughes water gardens spoke with me no less than half a dozen times, trouble shooting a fountain they didn't even sell me to begin with. and when I didn't buy one of the right parts when I was there in person, they sent me the right part in the mail. Plus some. I wouldn't expect this pattern to be repeated, but what a testament it is to their patience, consideration, and commitment to their customers. Hughes Water Gardens is a gem. What a cool place! I asked my local nursery if they sell pond liners and they said no but check out Hughes. So I made the trip out on a weekend. And what a fun visit it was! They've got a small dirt parking lot, a porta-potty for a restroom, gravel pathways, multiple greenhouses, and a small interior with the cashier. Staff seemed sparse but the folks I spoke to were helpful. I actually ended up leaving without a pond liner as it was more expensive than I budgeted for. I did take home some cool water plants. And we loved seeing all the tadpoles for sale - we are hoping our pond will fill up with wildlife naturally. We'll see! The pond project has been a lot of fun to work on at home and a visit to Hughes Water Garden provided lots of inspiration, useful tools, and a large variety of plants. read more

A close friend just put in a pond and I mention that I need to add some stuff to my pond but was running out of options since all my local spots were out of pond plants. She says that she picked hers up at Hughes Water Gardens. I looked confused and she was in shock I never heard of them but only said they had a large selection. I was excited for their plants but I was completely ill prepared for the actual location!!! I kept trying to squeeze in a visit - just run in and out like a half hour before they close or something but it kept not working out. I then decided on Sunday to make some time in the afternoon. I am so glad that I had the time to actually visit because, just wow... I walked in and - oh hi bladder! Good grief... a sweet employee clued me into a shortcut to get to their port a potty which, gotta say wow - super clean for a port a potty. Much appreciated! I was so happy with all the plants - they offer a well selected variety and I was able to get several plants I have actually been hunting for! That was a delightful surprise. I wanted everything! All the beautiful water features throughout were inspiring and I was very surprised at seeing different things everywhere because it is a huge space yet each area had something new! The employee I met at the start of my journey made sure to tell me to definitely look at the greenhouses at the far end. I turned the corner goig up the small hill to look at the greenhouses. I had passed the stunning large water lily test pond figuring that was their display but I was not at all prepared for the incredible water garden directly in front of the green houses. The backdrop was filled with wild flowers and there were Victorian waterlilies on display. I was heading back to the front and thought I had seen everything. I spot this little sign mentioning a pond test garden. They have an acre sized pond you can walk around which is just amazing looking. I am still in genuine shock that my friend referred me here with a casual word like I was going to Fred Meyer especially when I said I had never heard of this place. And apparently I am not alone. The employees said they get people all the time who state they had lived within a milk for over a decade and JUST randomly found them. They are tucked back from the road just far enough. But yes, go here even just to walk around and get inspired! They have a lot of art pieces and fountains which are locally made too! read more

My mom wanted a lotus for her garden and her friend recommended us to Hughes. Service is great. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Many varieties of potted plants and water plants. Large selection of lilies and lotus. You have to check it out- they are fragrant and smells great. Beautiful pot options and garden decor. I am a girl who is a sucker for a good water feature. And since Spring is in the air (kinda - it did snow on my way to work AGAIN!), that means I'm looking forward to backyard projects at the new house. When we bought our last house, we put in a pond and got the supplies from Hughes. Ten years later and it was still chugging along, with a few supplemental visits to get new plants. This is an amazing place that helps you design and build water features of all shapes and sizes (ponds, waterfalls, dry creekbeds, containers). They have 10 acres of grounds, so you can stroll through different displays and ponds for inspiration. In addition to all the pond basics (pumps, liners, and filters), they also sell everything imaginable related to ponds, including 30 types of waterlilies (who knew?), stone pagodas, fish, whiskey barrels and ceramic containers for your balcony garden, outdoor sculptures and wind chimes. This is also a full nursery, so you aren't just limited to pond supplies. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. You can hire them to professionally design and install your water feature, but they were great with advice and we did it on our own. They even offer a number of different FREE classes on Saturdays if you need a little extra help. This spot is a gem. Not only do they sell water features and conduct classes on how to install them, but visitors are also treated to a large variety of tropical and aquatic plants available for purchase. Perhaps the biggest draw, however, are the enormous Amazonian lily pads which are large enough to support the weight of a small child. Hughes even features a secluded pond area where visitors can relax and enjoy the beautiful lilies and giant koi fish (also available for sale). This is certainly more than your average garden store and provides a totally unique experience. What a fun field trip!! But don't get there early because there is no where to pull off the busy street and wait. Once open there is plenty of room to park though.I learned the hard way. Tons of great ideas and interesting water plants. Don't miss the water lillies! They have all the equipment to repair your pond or fountain. There's this park, right? With waterfalls and ponds and lilies and frogs and brightly colored fish, winding paths and bamboo forests, and soothing sounds all around. But here's the twist: it's all for sale! Here there are hot houses and fixins for water features bigger than the size of my whole property, and itty bitty mini water landscapes that you can populate with your own imaginary miniature fairy family. There's even a water plant called fairy moss, just waiting to be added to your teeny pond. My first response upon entering the premises was the strong desire to fall asleep. If I could have lain down on one of the benches, I'd still be there, napping my life away. When I mentioned this to one of the staff members, he informed me that the initial reaction of most visitors is the immediate need to use the facilities. Sadly, the only facilities are on the corners of the property, and are labeled "Honey Buckets." That said, if I've strapped the kids in the car, and made sure everyone's already used the bathroom, I could easily see Hughes Water Gardens as a quick and easy day trip destination, no purchase necessary. But if you're like me, you'll probably end up leaving with something, even if it's just a (free) tadpole or, in my case, a beautiful Arctic Willow. read more

This place is awesome! Pretty much the best nursery around. They don't just have water plants, they have ground cover, Japanese maples, bamboo and more. The way it is laid out, it is like an oasis right off Stafford Road. They are most known for the water plants. They have water lillys and these huge lilly pad type plants that are very impressive. I am so happy to have found Hughes!!! I had seen a fountain that I liked very much at a nursery down south but it was gone when I went back buy it. Anyway, on my quest for the perfect fountain, I ended up, hopeful, at Hughes. I was thrilled by the great selection and how beautifully they displayed things and a wonderful selection . I was able to find a great fountain and it even came in 3 different stains to choose from. It was fun having the nursery person demonstrating how they all work, and options.I picked one out and arranged for it to be delivered the next day. The next day, two people came to my house with said fountain. I had not been able to prepare the site for it, but they ( Rachel and Noah) had brought gravel and they cheerfully installed it, even though it was not simple. They had it up and running in no time! I am ecstatic!!!! Now I am spending much more time in my garden; the fountain looks like it has been there forever; the water sounds are attracting birds, and I like to go out in the middle of the night when I can't sleep and enjoy the way the fountain lights up the trees with a dancing flicker. I knew I would like it, but I really didn't know if could be this great!!!! Oh, and I forgot to say that at Hughes they have their own Grove of immense mature timber bamboo, which was a treat on its own. I could go on and on, but I think you catch my drift.... I had driven past their signs several times but finally stopped in. Their selection of fountains, plants, supplies, and accessories is great. I even felt the price on some of their prefab fountains were cheaper than some of the bigger landscape shops and they had unique designs. The prices on their pumps however seem to have an insane markup. Do your research first... Let me start by saying I hadn't done any specific pump price comparisons before I went there. I only knew what size I thought I needed for my small pond/waterfall project. After asking about their pumps I was advised to get a larger pump than I thought I needed as they were specific for waterfall functions, would likely last longer, and they might be able to fix if in fact there was an issue in the future. The knowledge the folks at Hughes have is great and they will take the time to explain it all to you and give you options. I love that about this place. After I got home with my purchases I had a thought to look online as I wasn't initially prepared to pay what I did on the pump. I found the exact pump on Amazon with free shipping for $150 LESS than what was charged here. Please note I fully expect to pay more at smaller shops and appreciate the knowledge and effort in helping me. But $150 more for maybe 20 minutes of help seems excessive. When I went back to ask if they offer price adjustments and told them why they seemed a bit rude and simply told me Amazon's price was less than what they buy them for and offered nothing else. A man behind me rudely stated 'that's what Amazon does' as if they were somehow breaking the law. I kept the pump as I want to help smaller local businesses. I could have simply returned the pump and repurchased online. Bottom line, great source for accessories, plants, fountains, rocks, etc but buy your pumps online. read more

I recently visited to get my new container pond up and planted. The grounds are lovely to walk around with all kinds of inspiration to look at. I think it'd be fun even if your don't need anything. The plants all look healthy and are clearly priced with bags to cover the aquatic ones so you don't make a mess. They sell koi/goldfish too, but the selection leaned high end. They even let you catch a few tadpoles for free which I thought was super neat. I forgot to ask what kind of frogs they'll grow into so hopefully they're a native species. At least they seemed too small to be bullfrogs. All of the plants we purchased seem to be doing well 3 weeks later and the lily especially has kept up gorgeous blooms. read more

This is one of my favorite garden centers in Portland! Hidden between Wilsonville and Tualatin ----- This Beautiful gem has some of the most secret show gardens in the city. Every July they host an art show (which is currently happening) for the community. Local artists participate and do art demonstrations. They sell water lilies, flowers, gardening supplies, and all sorts of items for the garden / water gardens. They have Three garden greenhouses with different types of water lillies. One includes the gigantic type from South America. These lilies can expand to be very large. Large and strong enough to even support a small child. They have many show fountains,as well as other gardens to explore. I like the big koi lake with the bamboo garden. Love the variety of plants and flowers here too. Bring your camera and some extra cash when you come here.......you'll probably fall in love with something for your garden. Every year Hughes Garden helps support the community by giving to the Oregon Food Bank. They also reward their loyal customers with an art garden gala in the summer. I enjoyed entertainment and a special party this summer. This was one of my most special highlights of had for the summer. This place is spectacular. I give it five stars! Over the years this has been a go to place for anything related to a water garden; not the only one, but the main one. There is an extensive collection of well cared for plants for sale. Other items related to a water garden may be found here or elsewhere, and pricing can vary as much as availability. Here's the problem: time to up the professionalism by making this business more accessible. Mom has been coming here for years, but time has caught up with her mobility. This was the only nursery we visited that day still using crushed gravel paths, and non-accessible bathrooms; in fact they were smelly port-a-potties. Handicap parking was spray painted into the gravel lot. Mom can no longer access the business; it was really kinda sad. We did however spend a few hundred at the other nurseries. It is certainly a convenience that my parents live exactly ONE minute away from here. They have a huge selection of all types of plants, fountains, and outdoor art and decor. We have bought a small pond base tub here, all of our water plants, and tons of our regular plants as well (we have a 5 acre fully landscaped property.. so this is a lot of plants!) In particular, one of my favorite things to get here are 1) water lilies and 2) water lettuce. The water lilies here are gorgeous, ranging from hardy lilies in pink, yellow, white, and baby pink, to tropical royal purple, magenta, white, and other gorgeous colors. We have several hardies in our pond as well as a few of the tropical, which are my favorite. OH. And they also have fish here. Gold fish, koi, and butterfly koi. Last year we bought about 15 goldfish and 5 koi from here.... now we have about 25 goldfish and 30 koi! They had tons of babies they're adorable. I like the water lettuce here as well because the roots are thick and offer good coverage for our fish, and they look pretty and spread quickly. Today I came in at 5:10... 10 minutes after closing since I forgot they closed at 5. I knew exactly what I needed.... 12 new water lettuce which they have on sale for $30.00 for 12, and it would take 1 minute to grab a few. I walked into the building and asked the man who worked there if I could run and grab them and he happily said that was fine. He was not grumpy with me at all even though they were technically closed and we made small conversation while I paid. The people here are great and very polite and helpful and they offer a wide selection of outdoor plants and decor. If you're looking for something new to add to your property, garden, pond, etc, I would 100% recommend coming to Hugh's Water Gardens. read more
