There was not a great cover on the mattress, it was torn. I would move and a puff of smoke would envelope me. When I asked about it I was told that no one had complained in 25 years... Follow up question was "You have not changed the mattress in 25 years?" I was looked at like I was crazy. Needless to say, we cut our 3 day visit to one night and got out! I have to say, the folks there were nice. They offered to let us change Kabins, they offered to give us a different mattress. (I had already booked a new place by then.) Seemed like loads of fun for kids. (Weird but fun...Halloween in August...loads of trailers with tons of Halloween gear. ??) The facilities are just old. Not what you expect from a KOA.

Les greeted us and took the time to show us to our room on the third floor telling us all about the history of the property on the way. Someone complained in another review that there are stairs up to the third floor. It is true. They are wooden, steep, and full of character. The floors are original and slope and creak as expected, but are beautifully painted and well kept. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom was perfect, looking like it was remodeled yesterday. Since we realized there was not going to be a lot of dining choices, we stopped at a grocery on our way in for a light picnic dinner of cheese, crackers, fruit and a bottle of wine to enjoy by the water. It was a perfect evening to watch the sunset on one of the two waterfront areas on the property. It was only my husband and me. We could see another couple sitting on the rocks, but it still felt so private and it truly felt like something out of a romantic movie. The next morning we enjoyed the best blueberry muffins provided by the host and coffee on the front porch of the inn. As we sat looking down toward the water both a deer and a red fox came through the yard as a humming flew around the beautiful flowers. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. I almost want to keep this gem a secret!

Without fail, we had fresh towels delivered to our room every day and when I say fresh, I mean smells like your mom just pulled towels out of the dryer and wrapped you in a hug - fresh. Our Motel room was perfect for what we needed it for - a place to sleep when we weren't out exploring. Now the showers are almost comically small, but they get the job done. That said, the utilization of the space is very well thought out. My only suggestion would be to add some hooks by the door for extra hanging storage! We would definitely be back, but would probably level up and reserve a Cottage for a bit more shower space :)

The breakfast was amazing. We enjoyed both the French toast with praline topping and the eggs Florentine accompanied by pound cake and fruit. The waitress was very friendly and eagerly accommodated our request to eat breakfast outside. The grounds of the inn are gorgeous. There is a perfectly manicured lawn which leads straight to the ocean. For me, this area holds particular significance as it is where I got engaged! The inn is reasonably close to Bar Harbor / Acadia as well as local wineries and hikes. I would definitely recommend Captain Nickels Inn to anyone looking for a classy getaway in Midcoast Maine.
