After our first meeting on a Friday, I was pre-approved for a loan. He said he'd get back to me Monday with answers to a couple questions, which he did but I was still unclear on an issue. Over the course of 2 weeks, I sent 3 e-mails and left a voicemail, which he never replied to. Today I sent an e-mail requesting that my file be destroyed as I have chosen to go with another mortgage company; I promptly received a reply saying that was not a problem. How does this place stay in business?

The first was that our original mortgage application was denied due to our debt to income ratio which should not have been a problem as we had sufficient assets to cover the mortgage. While this was not Mr. Sofia's fault what he did next was to ask that my employer write a letter guaranteeing that I would be paid commission for 2013 equal to my 2012 commission, something that no one in their right mind would do unless they could predict the future. He even insisted that he speak to my employer to get them to write a letter to this effect. Needless to say when I asked my employer about this they pointed out the obvious that no one could agree to this. After wasting several weeks pursuing this Mr. Sofia finally went to another lender who had no problem with providing a mortgage. At this time we finally took a closer look at the Good Faith Estimate and noticed that there were loan origination fees of over $4000. After repeated requests for an explanation of the fees in which Mr. Sofia avoided giving us a straight answer, the lender finally explained that the fee to Starkey Mortgage was $3,900! Considering that most mortgage brokers have their fees paid by the lender, and that the law mandates full disclosure, we found this to be outrageous. In the end we went with another mortgage broker, Nancy Sun at Austin First Mortgage and we ended up paying a total of around $300 in total fees vs. $4,300 (none of which was paid to the broker) and ended up with a lower rate.

They will help you out as a Real Estate Agent or a buyer and help the seller understand the VA benefits.
