On 6/8, I awoke to find my camper surrounded by water. The water had pushed debris up against and under my camper. Almost everything outside on my "patio" area had been washed away. The campground employee said, "We were waiting for you to get up". In addition, the same employee said, "This is the third time this has happened". After I was able to get my camper to my RV service provider, I was informed the camper had water damage. This water damage resulted in the total loss of my camper. I was shocked, and am still grieving the loss of my camper. I took great care with it and had always felt safer in a private campground vs other options. I always thought Walnut Hills Campground would look out for me while I stayed there, but this was not the case. I still cannot believe they just watched the water rise around my camper and did absolutely nothing to try to warn me before or during this event. They could have tried to call or text to warn me, but they did not. Based on this experience, it appears Walnut Hills Campground has very serious infrastructure and procedural problems. Specifically, the drainage in and around sites 104, 105, 106 and 109 thru 117. There are creeks that will not drain properly during any level of rainfall. In addition, this water that backs up will cause road closures within the campground potentially preventing egress from some areas of the campground. They also do not have any warning system in place to warn campers of rising water. A campground employee told me it was safe to drive through some of the roads covered in water because she had driven her golf cart through it and it was, "okay". The parking for the trailhead is across from the Visitors Center. Wear sturdy shoes, no flip flops or sandals. Take water you will need it, especially on hot days. Only attempt if in good health. Some will bring a good camera, if you have bring it. Obviously take your phone for photos, but keep in mind of weak reception at the top. My recommendation is to start out early AM, but after day break as the trail is too difficult in my opinion to navigate while dark. The trail is around a mile and a half and can take over an hour with breaks. Many can reach the top in 35-45. The view is 100% worth the effort. Be careful up there, it's no joke. Elevation is over 3000 feet.

Humpback Rocks is the first Visitor Center you'll encounter if you're heading south on the BRP from…read morethe north entrance. It's a small, but good little visitor center, with a small shop and a small exhibit inside. There are also bathrooms here, with are of decent quality. You will be most rewarded if you actually get out of your car for more than a few minutes and take a short walk through the living museum on the Mountain Farm Trail. I think it's about 3/4 of a mile round trip, through a living museum of authentic farm buildings, showing what life was like for people who lived in the area in the late 1800s, and there are interpreters to explain the farmhouse. So absolutely worth the visit if you're on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We stayed in the Lakeside cabin and it…read morewas very comfortable with all the amenetis of home (including wi-fi and a full kitchen with a dishwasher) plus a hot tub on the back porch with a perfect view of the lake. There are a couple of hiking trails on the property itself plus there is good fishing in the lake (I caught a couple of nice bluegill thanks to Lisa's tip on the best fishing spot) and you can use kayaks, a paddle boat and a row boat as well. Each cabin also has a firepit, grill and picnic table. The property location is perfect as well and you're only a couple of miles from a Dollar General, grocery store, and most importantly wineries and breweries while still being in a really quiet place. There are couple of minor issues to keep in mind but don't let them stop you from staying here. The lighting in the cabin's living was a little dim so it could be a little hard to read at night if you don't move right next to a lamp. The beds were comfortable but the mattresses were just a little hard but that's just personal preference. Things were pretty quiet outside when we were there but I could see the lake getting a little busy if all four cabins were full and everyone wanted to use the lake at the same time. Also keep in mind that pets are allowed in most of the cabins and I believe people are supposed to keep their dogs on leashes but didn't always do so. Duane and Lisa are awesome people and provide the southern hospitality that you'd expect. A storm was coming the day we were supposed to check in and they emailed us to let us know we could check in earlier than usual that day or even the night before to make sure we stayed safe. I'd come back here for sure and highly recommend checking this place out.

We stepped in the cabin and it is beautiful. The interior is rustic and it fits so well. The host left information about the area and pamphlets for things to do and see in the area which is a very nice touch too for someone who has never stayed in the area like myself. The kitchen is stocked with things you would need to cook, make tea and coffee which is very cool but bring things to cook (meats and such). There are restaurants about 20 minutes away but if you are looking for the retreat and just wanting to stay at the cabin there is also a firepit and grill out back available. It was awesome to sit in the fire pit area and just listen to the nature in the area.

Although hidden and tuck away, all the locals here know about Ray's ice cream shop! My AirBnB host…read morerecommended getting ice cream here after my half-marathon. And that was exactly what I did afterwards. A few marathon runners joined me after and told me how the place is owned by a gentleman name Ray, and his daughter has a house right next to the store. Such a cute town with hospitable people. The ice cream is delicious!!! There's a huge selection of premium ice cream flavor. I couldn't decide because they all sounded amazing. But asking for recommendations and trying the samples were what saved me. I got the cappuccino with chocolate crunk, based on the recommendation of Ray's daughter. The ice cream here is the perfect remedy for post-race or post-hike. You won't be disappointed!

Coming from out of town for the weekend, my comrades and I were looking to go camping for the 4th of July- and with the closest state park booked, this was a close alternative to our ideal location. Not only did we find the prices very fair, but our tent campsite was ideal! The Buckhorne is a great place to tent camp. They have spaces that have fire pits and tables - you pay a tad extra for electric hookups (but we didn't need them). They have ample parking and their shower/bathroom facilities are clean and bug-free! In addition to RV camp sites, they have a great on-site store you can utilize if you forgot a few essentials. It has the local ice cream shop and DVD/VHS rentals as well as well seasoned firewood for sale. Tons of space to allow guests to come and go. This place is family owned and the family that owns it is just the most friendliest people you will meet. They always great you as if you were friends for ages and are always willing to help you out with any questions you have. They do allow their family cats to roam freely but they won't wander to your campsite unless invited - no worries, they are super friendly! And, if you are lucky, you may see the campsite owl that lives nearby - a mascot of sorts that is as talkative as she is beautiful! I would def recommend anyone in the Clifton Forge area to stop on in for a snack or ice cream treat at least. These people are what hospitality is truly about and they are the sweetest family you will meet. If you are planning on staying, do inquire about check in hours, as they do change day to day.

The rooms are decorated beautifully and the King size beds are very comfortable!! The breakfasts are like no other I have ever had! Tiramisu French toast, breakfast pizza, scrambled eggs with zucchini to name a few. And the homemade biscuits are unbelievable!! There are lots of things to do in the area. There are wineries, breweries and a distillery. There are places related to history like the Appomattox Courthouse and the D-Day Memorial. There are lots of hiking trails. There are some great restaurants to visit as well. Some that we have been to are Vito's, Mountain Mamas, and Blue Mountain Barrel House. Book a couple nights, you will not regret it!!
