Date: 3/1/2026 Time: 6:15 PM 62° Cool It's Sunday late afternoon. I receive a FB message from my male companion. Date night! Where do I want to go for dinner? It's a spur of a moment thing. There are two restaurants I want to have dinner - Y's Choice or Sweet Fingers. First stop: Y's Choice, which is in Uptown Oakland, the hood I grew up in the 50's (my old stomping ground). They are packed with beaucoup diners. Since we have no reservation, we decide to go out to ESO, destination Sweet Fingers, a restaurant serving Jamaican food. First time at Sweet Fingers and I need time to peruse the menu before deciding what entree seems to appeal to me. I have a choice of a small plate or large plate meal. Oxtail stew is something that I have not eaten in a long, long, long time, as in over 60 years ago. The oxtail stew that I had in the past was prepared with a tomato based sauce and contained carrots, potatoes and celery. However, the Jamaican style oxtail stew is totally different. Tender oxtail infused with seasonings and brown sauce. The sides were rice, vegetables and plantain. Although the rice is on the dry side, the entree is quite delicious. The small plate meal is the perfect amount of food for me. There is no "people" bag to take home with me. LOL. My male companion is surprised that I have eaten all my food. Most of the time when he and I are out on a dinner date, I have leftovers to take home. I usually order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage at any restaurants I have never been to or eaten there. Perusing the cocktail menu I decide to have a piña colada. ("If you like piña colada, and get caught in the rain...", refreshing no matter the season or weather.) My male companion orders the salmon entree and a salad. He does not eat plantain and he agrees the rice is dry. I can only surmise that he quietly enjoyed his dinner. The salad did not have enough salad dressing. I believe the waitress would have accommodated us if we have asked for more salad dressing. Overall I am pleased with my oxtail stew and cocktail. A return visit in the future to try other entrees on the menu is on the horizon. I would not mind having the jerk tofu. Hopefully my date would be willing to do a return visit.

The food was ok. I think I felt disappointed because it looked good but once I tried it, it was too spicy. I also ordered the 10 shrimp meal and so I would've originally sat inside but I got my order to go because I had to drop off a friend. Once I got home I realized my order only had 5 shrimps in it. The Jerk chicken only had one leg in it. It wasn't much food for the amount I paid. I will say the seamoss drink was delicious. The downside was that there were items my friend wanted to order but we were told that they didn't have those items since they were moving locations. It's a beautiful restaurant but I do wish they had different spice levels listed and gave you enough meat for the price you're paying. As well the cups needed to be clean more properly as shown in the pictures I included.

    The cornbread is dry

The food taste like nothing, cornbread was dry, has no flavor. They didn't have any selections. They had some food service tho.

One of my coworkers picked up lunch from Sweet Fingers for some of the staff members. I've heard god things about this place but this was my first time trying it. The menu has quite a few things that caught my interest, but I ultimately went with the Scotch Bonnet Shrimp with a side of rice and peas and plantain. The sauce is very spicy but so good! And when you eat it with a scoop of the rice and peas it's the perfect combination of an excellent bite! The portions are huge so you will definitely have leftovers. Can't wait to visit this place for myself and try something else on the menu!

I really want to give another star. And I really want to give this establishment they flowers because they've been in the mix for many many years. This was not my first visit to thus establishment. I used to visit them in their San Leandro location quite a few times and I've had a spectacular dinner or a great evening dancinge but this is my first time back there in years at the newer location in Oakland and I'm so happy they're back open. Even though it this wasn't my favorite time visiting there- I do plan to going back.l I say my dish I had good flavor. My scotch bonnet shrimpsauce was really good the pepper is more black peppery but it had a good little kick of heat which is what I like. I've had Scotch bonnet sauce and this was pretty good. Service was you know Fair it was one young man working the floor and the register, take out orders walk, in and the bar was not open. It look like it was just one person in the back as well cooking. Well one of the real drawbacks from this experience is that we ordered cocoa bread and we never got it. Two people at in my party ordered Coco bread and then dud not getit and even waited for it-finished our meal & was going to take it with us and still didn't get it. Even after going to the register asking about it and was not offered the refund. The guy that was in the back cooking came out I think he went to the restroom he was walking back in when I was at the registered asking about it and he kind of like Shrugged and a young man that was said he was new he didn't know it was that was--- the biggest drawback. I do also feel like my vegetables could have been fresher like my cabbage but look like it was wilted so it could have been left over in the refrigerator and warmed up so it is what it is it could be better the peas and rice were good with the scotch bonnet sauce. Let's not cheat the community because that plate is $35. Another positive thing though I will say this area is super clean I don't know if it's cuz Barbara Lee is in the house as a mayor of Oakland but the streets were immaculate. The parking lot everything in the area is felt really clean, safe and taken care of...the front of the restaurant the side everything so I can't really give Sweet Fingers the credit for that and if I can holla back but it look great on the outside the streets of Oakland are looking much better so don't be scared to visit restaurants and and businesses in Oakland because it is getting better and we got real people real food doing real things creating Legacy so shout out to Oakland businesses.

Came here for lunch around 2pm and there were no other customers in the restaurant and after waiting a few minutes by the door, we had to go track down an employee to get a table and menus. After we ordered our food, we were offered drink menus but again we had to track someone down to take our order. Our server said he was only 17 and couldn't do it. We finally got our drinks when we were almost done eating. We ordered curry goat, jerk chicken and jerk tofu. We all thought that the food was delicious but I wish the service had been better.

    Veggie patty and barbecue tofu

I ordered ahead online for takeout and got the barbecue tofu and one veggie patty. They are on big online ordering platforms like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. It was quick and smooth to pick up the food. The veggie patty is quite flaky, it reminds me of an empanada. It was pretty mild tasting overall, but still savory. The BBQ tofu was a lot stronger in taste. Even though I like BBQ, I think the sauce was too overpowering since it just tasted mainly salty and sharp due to the BBQ sauce, although the plantain and rice helped to balance it out. The tofu section contained broccoli, squash, red beans, carrots, and pieces of ginger as well. Overall, I appreciate that there are a decent amount of vegetarian options. Food was a bit pricy relative to the quantity though.

Stumbled across this spot with a friend and enjoyed every bite. This isn't fancy dining, but it's just good down to earth comfort food. The jerk chicken was spot on. The fried plantains were cooked beautifully. The rice and peas were slightly dry, but still great. We also added a patty / empanada that was 100% savory deliciousness. Definitely a fun spot to return to.

SWEEEEET FINGAAAAHZ INDEED! I was so hungry I started digging in before snapping a pic. EVERYTHING we ordered we enjoyed! I've been looking for a Jamaican restaurant that has good food and taste authentic and they are spot on. My top favs were the savory Curry goat #1 , then the Oxtails #2 then the Jerk wings on happy hour menu #3 with the sauce. I love that they have a happy hour. My husband enjoyed a cocktail. He had "The Grown Man" and said it was good and strong. Going to bring my friend here to show here that Oakland has GOOD food OK!!!

Loved everything about this place! Flavor, flavor, flavor! Everything we had was super flavorful. I tried the jerk tofu and looved it so much. Everyone I came with loved their dish as well. Service was quick and friendly. I would skip the cocktails, at least the one I had was average, but everything else I recommend!

She said the bar was first come, first serve..yet moments later, she seated two walk-ins who had been behind us in line at those exact seats. So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Man writing this has my mouth watering... definitely coming back for more dogs, drinks, and vibes!
