Date: 3/1/2026 Time: 6:15 PM 62° Cool It's Sunday late afternoon. I receive a FB message from my male companion. Date night! Where do I want to go for dinner? It's a spur of a moment thing. There are two restaurants I want to have dinner - Y's Choice or Sweet Fingers. First stop: Y's Choice, which is in Uptown Oakland, the hood I grew up in the 50's (my old stomping ground). They are packed with beaucoup diners. Since we have no reservation, we decide to go out to ESO, destination Sweet Fingers, a restaurant serving Jamaican food. First time at Sweet Fingers and I need time to peruse the menu before deciding what entree seems to appeal to me. I have a choice of a small plate or large plate meal. Oxtail stew is something that I have not eaten in a long, long, long time, as in over 60 years ago. The oxtail stew that I had in the past was prepared with a tomato based sauce and contained carrots, potatoes and celery. However, the Jamaican style oxtail stew is totally different. Tender oxtail infused with seasonings and brown sauce. The sides were rice, vegetables and plantain. Although the rice is on the dry side, the entree is quite delicious. The small plate meal is the perfect amount of food for me. There is no "people" bag to take home with me. LOL. My male companion is surprised that I have eaten all my food. Most of the time when he and I are out on a dinner date, I have leftovers to take home. I usually order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage at any restaurants I have never been to or eaten there. Perusing the cocktail menu I decide to have a piña colada. ("If you like piña colada, and get caught in the rain...", refreshing no matter the season or weather.) My male companion orders the salmon entree and a salad. He does not eat plantain and he agrees the rice is dry. I can only surmise that he quietly enjoyed his dinner. The salad did not have enough salad dressing. I believe the waitress would have accommodated us if we have asked for more salad dressing. Overall I am pleased with my oxtail stew and cocktail. A return visit in the future to try other entrees on the menu is on the horizon. I would not mind having the jerk tofu. Hopefully my date would be willing to do a return visit. read more

The food was ok. I think I felt disappointed because it looked good but once I tried it, it was too spicy. I also ordered the 10 shrimp meal and so I would've originally sat inside but I got my order to go because I had to drop off a friend. Once I got home I realized my order only had 5 shrimps in it. The Jerk chicken only had one leg in it. It wasn't much food for the amount I paid. I will say the seamoss drink was delicious. The downside was that there were items my friend wanted to order but we were told that they didn't have those items since they were moving locations. It's a beautiful restaurant but I do wish they had different spice levels listed and gave you enough meat for the price you're paying. One of my coworkers picked up lunch from Sweet Fingers for some of the staff members. I've heard god things about this place but this was my first time trying it. The menu has quite a few things that caught my interest, but I ultimately went with the Scotch Bonnet Shrimp with a side of rice and peas and plantain. The sauce is very spicy but so good! And when you eat it with a scoop of the rice and peas it's the perfect combination of an excellent bite! The portions are huge so you will definitely have leftovers. I really want to give another star. And I really want to give this establishment they flowers because they've been in the mix for many many years. This was not my first visit to thus establishment. I used to visit them in their San Leandro location quite a few times and I've had a spectacular dinner or a great evening dancinge but this is my first time back there in years at the newer location in Oakland and I'm so happy they're back open. Even though it this wasn't my favorite time visiting there- I do plan to going back.l I say my dish I had good flavor. My scotch bonnet shrimpsauce was really good the pepper is more black peppery but it had a good little kick of heat which is what I like. I've had Scotch bonnet sauce and this was pretty good. Service was you know Fair it was one young man working the floor and the register, take out orders walk, in and the bar was not open. It look like it was just one person in the back as well cooking. Well one of the real drawbacks from this experience is that we ordered cocoa bread and we never got it. Two people at in my party ordered Coco bread and then dud not getit and even waited for it-finished our meal & was going to take it with us and still didn't get it. Even after going to the register asking about it and was not offered the refund. The guy that was in the back cooking came out I think he went to the restroom he was walking back in when I was at the registered asking about it and he kind of like Shrugged and a young man that was said he was new he didn't know it was that was--- the biggest drawback. I do also feel like my vegetables could have been fresher like my cabbage but look like it was wilted so it could have been left over in the refrigerator and warmed up so it is what it is it could be better the peas and rice were good with the scotch bonnet sauce. Let's not cheat the community because that plate is $35. Another positive thing though I will say this area is super clean I don't know if it's cuz Barbara Lee is in the house as a mayor of Oakland but the streets were immaculate. The parking lot everything in the area is felt really clean,safe and taken care of...the front of the restaurant the side everything so I can't really give Sweet Fingers the credit for that and if I can holla back but it look great on the outside the streets of Oakland are looking much better so don't be scared to visit restaurants and and businesses in Oakland because it is getting better and we got real people real food doing real things creating Legacy so shout out to Oakland businesses. read more

Came here for lunch around 2pm and there were no other customers in the restaurant and after waiting a few minutes by the door, we had to go track down an employee to get a table and menus. After we ordered our food, we were offered drink menus but again we had to track someone down to take our order. Our server said he was only 17 and couldn't do it. We finally got our drinks when we were almost done eating. We ordered curry goat, jerk chicken and jerk tofu. I ordered ahead online for takeout and got the barbecue tofu and one veggie patty. They are on big online ordering platforms like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub. It was quick and smooth to pick up the food. The veggie patty is quite flaky, it reminds me of an empanada. It was pretty mild tasting overall, but still savory. The BBQ tofu was a lot stronger in taste. Even though I like BBQ, I think the sauce was too overpowering since it just tasted mainly salty and sharp due to the BBQ sauce, although the plantain and rice helped to balance it out. The tofu section contained broccoli, squash, red beans, carrots, and pieces of ginger as well. Overall, I appreciate that there are a decent amount of vegetarian options. Man, this place was a vibe. This was some of the best Jamaican food I've had in a long time. I ordered with jerk chicken. Plantains were good. I've had better beef patties but overall, I enjoyed the entire experience. An absolute culinary delight! We weren't quite sure what to expect, but the dishes were bursting with flavor, and apparent love was stirred into each pot, baked into each dish. I've been looking for a Jamaican restaurant that has good food and taste authentic and they are spot on. Update 8/19/25: I was immediately reached out to by the manager (I didn't get the chance to post this sooner). She showed concern towards the issues that I raised by offering me an apology. I appreciate that. However, I received a personal message not soon after informing me that after we left, the next customers oxtails were falling off the bone. If I can be very transparent, I would not have sent that to me. If one client/customer has a bad experience after spending any amount of money.. why would that person want to hear that the next pertain was served what every customer shouod have received... which was accurate cooked food. I think the think that bothered me that there was nothing offered from those in the restaurants or from management to support consideration towards the fact that the oxtails were half cooked and the service (outside of Joel was trash). Like we paid full price for food that was not worth it. Once Joel tasted the food himself, he deemed it unsatisfactory, that food should never have been allowed to be ate further. However, he kindly kept pointing out that we had so much of a serving, I guess he didn't want to have to dump that and give us better. I'm never looking for a meal ticket, but right is right and wrong is wrong. We spent over $100 for food that was not even worth $50 and trash customer service. My wife and visited this spot yesterday for the 1st time. We are both from Flatbush (Brooklyn, NY) and we love Carribbean food. We were immediately greeted by Joel (Sorry if I misspelled his name). We both agreed that the spot was nice. We sat where we liked. We let him know that this was our 1st time there and that we came based upn reviews. He was very accomodating. We ordered water and lemon, but they had no lemons available. Joel went to the store to get some (Honestly, they should have had that in stock). For food, we both ordered the Oxtail plate with rice and peas and plantain. My wife ordered the steamed veggies. For drinks, I order the Sweet Finger Juice (Mixture of Sorrel and Ginger Beer). The waitress informed us that the oxtails would be ready in 5 mins. We were excited because the food was going to be fresh. Pros: The serving size was great. The oxtails was a pleasant size. The rice and beans were delicious and the oxtails gravy went perfect with the rice. My drink was so tasty. Cons: The oxtails was undercooked..especially the large pieces. They were very very tough and that is not what it should have been (There is a disclaimer...Joel made it known earlier in that he was surprised or food came out so quick because he did not feel the Oxtails were done to have been served yet. He stated he tasted then and they needed longer). I told him after tasting a baby size oxtail, that it was a little rough.. but we were good. I did not realize at that point that the larger ones were as tough as they were. The plantain were very small sized. They were overcooked and some were undercooked. They tasted kinda old. The carrots in the oxtails needed to cook longer as well. The steamed veggies had been over steamed, so it was very dried out. I ate all my rice and some of the oxtails (Even though they were tough, I didn't want to waste $35 and I was beyond hungry). My wife barely ate. She ate some rice and the baby size oxtails. She was beyond dissatisfied. Majority of her food went home. My drink was served without ice. It was room temperature. Sorrel and ginger beer should be served cold. We ordered a slice of Rum Cake. When it came in the to-go carton, it was heated. I didn't understand why because it should be freshly made. It looked dry as well. The waitress was okay in the beginning. However, she did not come and check on us, she didn't ask if we needed anything. My wife had to go to her to get my ice. She brought an extra Sorrel that my wife had started asking for in the beginning, but changed her mind. That was on our bill. In the midst of meeting our needs, someone came back in because their bag broke. She stopped to support that customer by getting her a bag, putting the items into the bag and talking to her. She finally came back to our table and forgot to bring our bill. She never returned to pick up the bill, so I had to get up and go to the counter to pay. The restaurant was nowhere near crowded. She was sitting down. When we got home and ate the rum cake, it was dry and horrible. I think that it was in the fridge or freezer and they warmed it. Altogether we spent $112. The portions showed to be worth the amount.. but not the food nor dessert. I want to add that Joel was amazing..personality wise and managerial. However, I still need to give the review because he was not in the kitchen, nor was he the waitress. It's hit and miss with them. Went there recently and order a combo. Mostly bones for the oxtails and the jerk chicken was dry even with the gravy and it was smothered in gravy! It tasted like the food was leftover from the weekend. We came here a few years ago for a birthday party. We had 10-12 people and I recognized the quality had diminished then. I thought it was just a bad night for them no one was satisfied, but we had fun being together and drowned out the taste with beer. We were long time supporters when they were at another location and the food was markedly better. I hate to give a bad review to anyone, but I hope they would step up their game a bit. The atmosphere was good. Music was ok and the staff were very nice, but they knew it wasn't their best food day. The price was very high for all of it. There were two of us and the dinner was $100 without tip. I think until things get better I'll learn to cook Jamaican food at home. There are enough YouTube videos to teach me. Honestly after 2020 the quality of every restaurant's food has fallen. We have a very diverse pallet and I have found the restaurants that were initially decent have fallen in quality, consistency and increased in price tremendously. Sweet Fingers catered an event I attended last month and it was incredibly good! I am no jerk chicken connoisseur- but I have had my share around the Bay and during my travels. This chicken was moist, the heat was a slow burn, spices are imported from Jamaica and the flavor - so much depth! The cabbage also - super simple right? Not at all, still toothsome and the flavor from the spices, familiar but different. I could eat bowls of this. Cornbread was more like a hybrid with pudding/mochi almost - not too sweet or oily or dry, beautiful consistency. Mac casserole was a crowd pleaser too. Cooked just right and seasoned well. Rice and peas were standard. The food was a hit! Definitely recommend this eatery. Good people too, they had their staff serving - so knowledgeable and warm. We sure did enjoy our delicious oxtail dinner at Sweet's! The restaurant is spacious, with a full bar, and an order-at-the counter spot, for takeout, as well as table service. The owner, Clive (or Clyde?) was present and welcoming. We learned that he was the owner of the Jamaican spot in San Leandro that we loved, but had burned down years ago, so we are so glad that he was able to open up a much more refined spot in the Seminary neighborhood, near where I was born. The oxtail was fresh and just made; the pieces were the small end of the tail, but very plentiful; we appreciate the time to make it, and the high cost of the meat. I was there on a sunny Saturday, and I ordered: - Fried Chicken Dinner - Oxtail (a-la carte) - Corn Bread First off, the Oxtail is good! It's fall off the bone tender, and delicious. But it's pricey. Grade (5/5) The fried chicken dinner is also good. It wasn't spicy or salty. It's 5 small pieces of chicken, rice and beans, and plantains. I was expecting regular sized chicken pieces, and instead got small pieces of chicken. Maybe 1/2 - 2/3 normal size. But the chicken had a crispy crust, with juicy white/dark meat. Grade (4/5) I also ordered a side of Corn Bread, and it wasn't what I was expecting. I guess there's different recipes. I'm used to the yellow cornbread with a grainy texture, that's served in Southern cooking. The cornbread I received from Sweet Fingers had a plain flavor, and wasn't buttery. Happy to learn this restaurant has reopened. If I'm not mistaken they were in San Leandro and there was a fire. So I believe this is the replacement restaurant. Big spot and plenty of street parking. Not in the nicest area, but you'll be fine. They have a full bar and have posters with upcoming events. Music is jumpin and it wasn't too busy when we got in. We weren't addressed when we walked in nor did anyone come to our table. Some people after us ordered first then sat while we scanned the QR code and placed the order. Then there was these older ladies that were just sitting there, not knowing how to order because no one greeted them. Food came out fast but in takeout containers. Hits the spot! The food is just good. Don't know where else to get good Oxtails in the east bay and these are good enough! The beef patties were okay, meat wasn't as juicy as normal, but the flavor was there :) We did family style: goat, oxtail, and brown stew chicken. The rice and peas are great and they have sweet fried plantains, wish they had green fried plantains. They had a great really spicy hot sauce that complimented the food. unfortunately you have to keep getting up to ask for more cause they give little plastic containers of it, versus having bottles nearby or at each table for people like me that are very saucy. I ordered the jerk chicken and rice and peas, and both were really flavorful. The serving looked a little small, but it was perfect for lunch. Heard about this spot from a cook worker and I had to come and give them a try. Ordered the oxtail meal with peas and rice. The oxtails were seasoned tender and it was a decent amount for the price. Being an island man this doesn't give me typical Jamaica oxtails they put potatoes in theirs. It gives you a more of a beef stew feel to it or Southern oxtails. They were different but I'd still give them a B plus it has flavor. Unlike other spots they throw away them pan drippings they actually make crazy with theirs and that's so good. The peas and rice is moist and has flavor. Nice and Shelly like island people enjoy. This place popped up on recommended and I realized I've ate here before, so I had to stop and show them some love! The food is delicious I remember getting the oxtails and my partner getting the jerk chicken! The flavor of those meats were flavorful, not dry, and the chicken just had the best char flavor. The flavor is good but they give you the tiniest portion of stew with a sorry quantity of oxtails. If they can't serve this in a normal sized portion, they should just remove it from the menu. My old colleague sent me a video about this place. It had been on my radar but glad she reminded me. This is located close to my job. After looking at the photos my co-worker said she would get something. I placed our order on-line. Curry Chicken, Jerk chicken, brown chicken stew and a home made rum cake. Went to pick it up and on a day where I'm not quite as rushed, I will go in and sit. Spacious and like to be able to patronize small local businesses. As I pick it up, I spotted a drink on a counter. I thought it was hibiscus and the lady told me sorrel, so I ordered one. The decor reminded me a little bit of a Jamacian restaurant. The smell of the food in the car on the way back to office had my olfactory senses working overtime. I dropped my coworkers order to her and dug into mine. First sign was that this was gonna be good. The chicken was cut up with the leg tips off where you could suck the bone marrow if you wanted. The heat from the dish was not overpowering and it slowly heat up as you eat. Good for someone who is not familiar with Jamican food and the oh so small but powerful scotch bonnet pepper. And the peas and rice was well cooked topped with plantains cooked perfectly. Though there is kidney beans in the rice and it looks similar, it is not red beans and rice. This took me back to my trip to Jamaica in my younger years and the roadside food stands. I had the chicken brown stew the next day. I also wanted to try the jerk chicken, so I decided on the wings, which I had to dinner. They were good, but for me could have been hotter, as well as the dipping sauce that came with it. Needless to say I will be back here for my Jamacian food fix. read more
