The restaurant itself is beautiful inside -- a cozy mix of rustic and modern that creates a really inviting atmosphere. Service started a little slow, though our waitress became more attentive once she came by. We mentioned it was our first visit, so I was a bit surprised there wasn't much guidance on the menu or any recommendations. At one point I asked about the two kinds of fries (I love fries!), and the explanation was simply that they were "fancy fries," without much detail on flavors or differences. We started with drinks and the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The sprouts were actually very good, with a nice balance in the sauce, and both the wine and sangria were refreshing. Unfortunately, dinner is where things went downhill. Our meals -- a steak and a gluten-free chicken sandwich -- took about 45 minutes to arrive, which felt long for relatively simple dishes. I had asked about the gluten-free bun since they can sometimes be dry, but didn't receive much insight beyond "it's gluten free," and sadly it was indeed very dry. The chicken itself lacked flavor, though the goat cheese cilantro sauce helped make it somewhat enjoyable. The fries looked homemade and delicious but arrived cold. The steak was cooked as requested, but it didn't have much flavor beyond the mushrooms on top. The broccoli side was tasty, and the potatoes were good, though it on a bed of Some kind of cheese sauce that wasn't quite to our liking. Overall, the space and gluten-free availability were promising, and the appetizers and drinks were enjoyable, but the food execution and service details didn't quite meet expectations for us this visit.

They are so good! You really do wind up saying "Holy Moly" that's good! I love a good fritter and theirs is amazing! Size of my face! I ate too much before thinking of a photo. We also got the donut bites, a cinnamon roll and a dozen glazed/chocolate donuts. Light fluffy and with that incredible little light crunch on the outside and melt in your mouth inside. For those complaining of price, they are in line with other local options. Being local they likely don't have the buying power the chain stores do, yet are still under 2 for most flavors. The fancy ones are under 3 but are like twice the size! Worth it and will return! Service was super nice and friendly! Definitely support this local gem!

The corned beef hash was outstanding, crispy where it should be, tender where it counts, and clearly made by someone who actually cares. You can taste the effort. The scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked too. Now, about that "sourdough." I have to confess I'm a bit of a sourdough snob after spending time eating the real deal in San Francisco. This wasn't sourdough. It was good white bread wearing a fake mustache. That said, it was fresh, buttery, and the marmalade was absolutely delicious, so I still happily cleaned my plate. The coffee is self-serve and bottomless, which I actually like. If you're the type who enjoys topping off your own cup whenever you want, it's perfect. If getting up to refill your coffee feels like an Olympic event, you may disagree. Service was friendly, fast, and exactly what you hope for at a breakfast spot, attentive without hovering. We visited around 8:30 on a Saturday morning. Since it's a college town and summer break was in full swing, it wasn't busy at all. I'd expect it to be a much different story once students are back. Overall, I'd absolutely come back. Just one request for The Roost: either upgrade to real sourdough... or call it white bread. My inner bread critic will thank you.

She also has an extremely good personality and very helpful about explaining the different products! She's originally from Australia and has the accent to prove it! Extremely nice lady! She also had 2 young ladies helping her and they were as equally nice too. The facility was extremely clean! As you can see, you could literally eat off of her floors and this was at the end of a busy day that I took those particular pictures! Everything was extremely tidy! By the time I got there later in the day, a lot of her things were sold out! She said the line was out the door before she opened that morning and she started baking at 3AM!! She opens at 10AM. I ordered a chocolate chip cookie (delicious), blueberry muffin (the blueberries were large and not stingy), and pumpkin type cake (excellent). To summarize the entire experience was above and beyond what I had expected for this small scale town! This bakery is more of an upscale bakery you find in somewhere like Kansas City, Not Holton! . I highly recommend it. Also posted some more pics of some of her desserts that she makes, they were available on Friday.
