Salted Caramel with Oreo and Essex Mud with Pumpkin Gingersnap
    Matthew L.

Sweet P's is a gourmet ice cream parlor that opened in Essex, Connecticut in 1989. It was founded by businessman Lee Thompson. Since 2014, it has been under the ownership of Angelica Linfesty. Sweet P's proudly serves ice cream which is made by Ashley's Ice Cream: a popular local creamery chain with five locations in the Greater New Haven area. Sweet P's supply is made fresh at Ashley's Guilford location. One flavor in particular is made exclusively for Sweet P's: "Essex Mud" (coffee ice cream base with fudge, brownie, Oreo and almonds). In addition to carrying two dozen ice cream flavors at any given time, Sweet P's also serves milkshakes, soda floats, sundaes, affogato, strawberry shortcake, frozen lemonade, smoothies and acai bowls. My wife and I recently visited Sweet P's while we were staying in Essex for our anniversary. We were staying across the street at the Griswold Inn. While exploring the nearby shops, we wandered into the ice cream parlor. After looking over the menu, I ordered a scoop of Essex Mud and a scoop of Pumpkin Gingersnap while my wife ordered a scoop of Oreo and a scoop of Salted Caramel. My wife and I are both fans of Ashley's Ice Cream, so we were not surprised that the ice cream was so good at Sweet P's. We ate our ice cream cups outside in the relaxation garden while enjoying the beautiful Autumn weather. We would definitely stop by again!

Cutest little ice cream shop with great ice cream. We came here after dinner and we were not disappointed. Just happy it was open! Seriously so many places aren't open until like late May. It was our routine on vacation of ice cream after dinner which our son obviously loved.

I don't believe I hadn't already reviewed Sweet P's. This is a cute little ice cream and candy shop on the main drag behind the coffee shop headed to the river in Essex. Decent flavors, ok prices, friendly scoopers. Sad they were out of their signature flavor (essex mud or something like that, sounded good but they ran out) and I got a very nice Mint Chocolate Chip (and it wasn't green). I have been here probably 10 times in the last 4 years or so and it is always good, and a nice stop on the way to check out the river or go look for eagles or something.

Great place, ice cream tastes great. Priced like metropolitan areas, unfortunately, but not a deterrent! Check it out!

Great little shop that sells the best ice cream in CT - Ashley's! Line, if theee is one, moves quite quickly.

I'm guessing from some limited information that the at least some of the owners are the same, but I don't really know. In any event, the new space is bigger inside. Meaning you can actually walk inside now. There is still significant outside seating. They also seem to serve some limited non-dessert food. Like the day I was there, they had lobster rolls and hot dogs. There isn't any reason why I would change my prior review score. Service was friendly. They have 33ish flavors of hard ice cream. I had a hard time picking a flavor because I was looking for something different, but the flavors seemed fairly standard. I ultimately ordered a sugar cone with a scoop of key lime pie ice cream. They asked if I wanted any toppings, and I asked for a single Blue Raspberry Sour Patch Kid on top because I thought it would look cool. The ice cream flavor was good. It had like a pie crust swirl which added some contrasting flavor and texture.

The kid working there had his hands full with a long line, working solo but didn't skip a beat. The thing this place gets right where most ice cream shops get wrong, is the bright digital menu signs mounted up high. You can actually stand in line and see what they have. Other shops you don't know what they have until you get up to the register, thus causing delays and indecisiveness. I dislike the ice cream sample tasting though. This should be banned. It's only ice cream, take a chance. When there are 15 people in line, the rest of us don't have the patience for you to sample a flavor and think about it before committing to buying a 1-scoop cup. Ok my rant is done, but Fenwick's is a great place with great ice cream.

Big portions of the ice cream for a modest price. As for the ice cream itself, it was a little hit or miss with our family. Eventually, you'll hit a crossroads and traffic circle where 81 meets Deep River Road or Route 80. Congratulations, because that crossroads is also the location of Crossroads, a very cool ice cream shop. We made our first ever visit to Crossroads today (they've only been open for a year and a half) and were very impressed with the friendly service, great ice cream, and outdoor seating overlooking the water. My Kiddie sized sea salt caramel dish was excellent and very reasonably priced at just $3.75. Bonus points for their generous amount of chocolate sprinkles! My wife had a dish of peanut butter brownie, and of course I sampled it. If you like peanut butter ice cream, as I occasionally do, you've probably been disappointed once in a while because the peanut butter flavor was kind of timid. But not at Crossroads! Their peanut butter flavor came blasting through loud and clear. It was fantastic. Their outdoor seating area is quite nice with lots of Adirondack chairs, tables, fire pits, and a corn hole game. I enjoyed chatting with the young staff who gave me a few blank looks when I asked them if they knew Eric Clapton's song "Crossroads". *Pro Tip - Crossroads doesn't have a website, but you'll find them on FB and Insta

We all had egg sandwiches to go (two wraps and two traditional) and enjoyed them. Iced tea was good. Service was very good. The store has a lot of interesting items, especially if you like nostalgic candies. Decor was very charming. There's a deli case that might be great for lunch and I didn't read the menus on the walls. Sandwiches are made fresh and they appear to either have a bakery or a relationship with one as there were quite a few pastries that looked creative and fresh. It takes some time to make the food so my recommendation is to call them ahead of time so it is ready when you arrive. There are a few tables inside and a few more outside so there is seating. If you read my reviews you might know that the highest I give on a first visit is 4 stars. If I go back and the place is excellent again I raise it to 5. This is so that a place that is consistently the best of the best (vs a one time great experience) gets 5 stars over a place that just does it once. Olive Oyl's would definitely be eligible for a 5th star and I'm virtually certain to give it to them on the next visit. It was such a perfect combination of choices, quality, service and ambiance! We've been coming to Essex for so many years and always passed this place by for no reason in particular. Now I think we will visit every time we're in town!
