My son and daughter-in-law hired Sweetwater Cuisine for their wedding, and unfortunately, the wedding day did not live up to the experience they had during the planning process. As the mother of the groom, I watched the day unfold from behind the scenes. There were multiple issues throughout the event, including late chair delivery, incorrect tablecloths, hors d'oeuvres that never made it to many guests, buffet items that ran out before everyone was served, and desserts that many guests--including the bride and groom--never received. Our day-of coordinator also had to step in several times to clear plates, refill the buffet, and manage tasks that should have been handled by the catering staff. We understand that no wedding is perfect, but the level of disorganization was disappointing. One staff member was even socializing with guests and asking if he could join the dancing, which felt very unprofessional. To the owner's credit, she met with my son and daughter-in-law afterward, but the resolution offered did not reflect the impact these issues had on such an important day. There are so many outstanding wedding caterers in the Hampton Roads area. Before making such a significant investment with this company, I encourage couples to do their research, compare several companies, and read recent reviews carefully. I came here for brunch. They do it most Sundays. My biggest complaint really was the service. Wasn't quite the best but it's a buffet so it's not the end of the world. Turns out coffee, tea and water are included in the price of the buffet. What really makes this buffet amazing is the grits bar! I like how they do eggs to order. You can do an omelette or have them fried. Brunch is a little bit lunch and a little bit breakfast which is also really nice. Lots of sausage and bacon choices. Apparently, they are known for their bread pudding. I had some delicious apple spice cake which to me was the star! They also have a biscuit/bread bar which was nice. The lunch portion was huge! They didn't mess around with the size of those pork chops. I also really enjoyed the fried chicken and waffles. This was a pleasant treat to myself. I sincerely love this place. There was a time when they switched to just catering and I missed going there so much. Now they do Sunday buffets and I am always trying to talk my family into going! The food is rich and filling. There's been a time or two when I had an issue with a reservation or longer wait times than expected and the owners are always apologetic and try to make sure I still enjoy my visit. I didn't know if this was a restaurant, but Sweetwater Cuisine mostly does catering. They have an intimate venue that accommodates up to 70 people, based on the event I attended. There is an area set up for the food such as charcuterie, finger sandwiches, a fruit spread and drink station. There is little garden area you can view from the dining room that adds to the ambiance. Looove this spot!!! I remember having my baby shower here and the food was sooo good years ago. We had made reservations for Easter brunch and so glad we did. Everything was so cute from all the Easter decor with eggs hidden everywhere and bunnies and signs. They had their food stations outside in the hall and also inside once you walk in. It was all over the restaurant really which made it easy to get to and not be tied up with long lines or groups of people standing around waiting. During brunch they had a lot to choose from- mto eggs, omelettes, crepes, chicken, waffles, grits, shrimp n grits, salads, fruits, veggies. They had a lot. The dessert table had a ton of options too from cakes, cookies, brownies and my fave was the hot bread pudding, just wish they had ice cream to put on top of it. Lol. SOOO DISAPPOINTED! To start I had a reservation a week prior than Mother's Day and they cancelled our reservation the day before for an emergency. Forward to today which is Mother's Day. My husband made a 3pm reservation, we arrive 10 mins prior and was seated around 3:05. The setting is that of a house so you are in close proximity to everyone. Buffett style setup! Immediately I was turned off by the fact that there was no hand sanitizer anywhere in sight. Thankfully I carry. Everything on the buffet was almost out and/or cold. I guess they decided that the 3 pm reservations would just eat whatever was left. UNSAT! Don't book reservations that late if the food isn't going to be replenished and up to the same standard as it was when you just opened. Service was ok, they did the best they could. I'd say that the selection of entrees were ok, however preparation is everything! Especially on a Holiday when you know you're going to be booked. Multiple people were complaining about the same things I mention above. Cold food and empty dishes! I won't return bc first impressions are huge and for the amount of money we spent vs the quality of food, it doesn't add up! I came hungry and left hungry. Mimosa flight was ok. I was here for restaurant week. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile so I am glad I finally made it. I believe that they are not an actual restaurant open 7 days a week. I believe it's more catering and maybe renting the space??? And Sunday brunch. They are right near Willis Furniture and there is parking. I liked the inside, they have a small bar area and outdoor patio. I did ask the hostess some questions but she knew nothing and said she only usually works Sundays. I was a bit disappointed in that answer. I ordered the house salad and shrimp and grits. I love that I could replace a drink for the dessert. I ordered the pineapple punch and it was delicious! I would go back just for that drink!! A little spicy, a little sweet....a perfect balance. The house salad was delicious and a good size. I got the shrimp and grits. Unfortunately it was way too salty. Almost couldn't eat it. I took home the leftovers and the next day ate a few bites but ended up throwing it away because of the saltiness. The food was good; I like that they had turkey options because some restaurants don't. There shrimp pasta, shrimp and grits, and chicken was soooo amazing. The mimosa flight was great too. I called AND texted to make a large party reservation for Father's Day brunch a month in advance and was told I'd be put on a waitlist. I even checked back a few days later and was told again that I was on the waitlist. Now, just 4 days before Father's Day I finally get a text response that they couldn't accommodate me. If it was truly a waitlist and customers were given reservations based on first come first serve, then they should have known much sooner about whether or not they could accommodate my group. It shouldn't have taken 3 weeks. And I have it all on text as proof. Bottom line: I had requested a reservation so far in advance but now I'm stuck with no Father's Day reservations. If I had known of the potential risk, I would've booked elsewhere. So just giving all other customers fair warning. I had enjoyed them at a catering event at Steinhilbers a few months back. Sweetwater offered both lunch 2 course ($25) & dinner 3 course ($35) options this week. Since they are brunch only 1st/3rd Sunday 11-3 this was a great weekday opportunity to try lunch. The location off Virgina Beach Blvd is beside Willis furniture. Surface parking is directly in front. The area was clear of debris. The entrance is used by more than Sweetwater. The dining room is long and narrow with table and chairs, wood floors and drop ceiling. Nothing exciting, but I understand a vast improvement. The area was clean. They also have a bar just off the entry into the restaurant. An outdoor patio is available off the bar. I was greeted by a friendly female hostess who showed me to the only window table overlooking a garden. My waiter Jim provided the restaurant week menu which was the only items offered and got my drink order. First Course / honey pecan fried chicken crispers. Served with gourmet mac. The chicken was amazing balls and repeated for dinner. Second Course dessert / Sweetwater's Signature bread pudding w/ caramel sauce. To die for scrumptious! The service overall was efficient and friendly by Jim. A couple times my water glass hit the bottom. That was the only negative. Prior to departing I met the owner Jodi who thanked me for coming in. Downright the best cuisine ever!!! It's Southern cooking with a twist of elegance!! Been here over the years with family and it's still our favorite place to dine! The food is phenomenal, especially the braised lamb with mashers! The lamb was so tender and flavorful. The first time I tried Sweetwater was at a wedding expo event and that honey pecan chicken had me wanting more! Since then, I have been coming here for a few years now, more often for their brunch which is only served the first and third Sunday of the month. With one of the best spreads around, this has been one of my go-tos for brunch. A couple of my favorites are the chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits! They also have a mimosa and bloody mary bar at $6 each, an omelet station (I've had one of the best omelets here) and a few lunch items on their buffet which isn't too bad, but I'm mainly there for the breakfast food! Sweetwater expanded again and has taken over the store that was once next door so it's a lot more spacious. The staff is courteous and attentive most times I've been. The owner is also around often as I've seen on numerous occasions, but she's not very personable. Most times her head is stuck in her laptop at the bar and doesn't even acknowledge you. Usually when I see the owner/manager on site, he/she does either one or all of these things: welcome you, check to see how you're doing, and/or thank you for visiting. All good. Very good spot, we checked in to for lunch. My friends and I were thrown off because this place is located within a shopping center. We sat down and were greeted by an enthusiastic waitress who took our drink order and told us of our specials. We met our Sweet Potato biscuits and although I resisted at first, I ended up eating both mine and a friends. Sweet perfection. My friend ordered the Oyster Po' Boy, my mouth was salivating (and still is) as it was placed on the table, luckily I was able to steal a bite and boy was it worth it! Some other places don't use big enough oysters to fry or it ends up soggy. But the breading was just right My other friend and I ordered the Seafood and Corn Chowder, he ordered the Grilled Cheese and I ordered the Waldorf Salad. Salad was great!! Its an adorable little tea room that has mismatched chairs and tables and a quaint feel. All of the food is homemade. One thing that stuck out to me the most, especially since we are currently in a pandemic, their procedures to keep everyone safe is A1. The location was odd knowing they have Tijuana flats in the vicinity sweet waters is in the business shopping plaza. I looked loss going in and out of the double sided doors thinking I was at the wrong location, and this was my second time going. I thought to myself I need to walk around the back again but then I noticed the stairways down the hall to the right and I New I was at the restaurant. It's really small, it felt like this place was exclusive to a very few because of the seating arrangements and the fact that their were a few people. It seemed like a much more older crowd at the restaurant I didn't know what to expect. Pretty much old ladies sitting around. This was my first time here, coming here for restaurant week. From the grape vine the owner of the restaurant is a woman. That's awesome. The 3 course dinner choices looked amazing. I had the beef tenderloin selection with salad and bread pudding. The bread pudding was indeed memorable that I decided I'd come again Next day came for lunch. I had the honey fried chicken with collard greens. It was so good and typically I prefer bone in chicken because sometimes boneless can be rather dry. They nailed it. I felt the chicken was lacking without some cheesy grits. The grits really put the dish together and made my lunch complete. Yes was I happy. If you have not tried their Sunday brunch you are definitely missing out!!!! They only have them twice a month so please do yourself a HUGE favor and make a reservation. They book quickly !!!! Really delicious and affordable food, but the wait times are pretty insane for a lunch spot. On a Friday there was an almost 20 minute wait. It wasn't until I was seated that I noticed it was because there was only 1 waitress and all the tables were filled with (lovely) senior citizens with no food on the table, glasses of wine, while playing cards. There was no sense of urgency to leave and the waitress wasn't bothering them. For the food I had the half and half with Kale salad and pimento cheese sandwich with bacon. I loved the amount of cheese on the sandwhich it was the perfect amount of ooze for a perfectly toasted bread. The salad was light but filling, the kale wasnt too gritty and the dressing was not too heavy. I will definitely return, but will choose an earlier day during the week(Fridays is $5 day), and later in the afternoon. read more

My friends and I made this reservation about a month ago as they only do brunch every 3rd Sunday of the month. Boy am I glad we did. Sweetwater definitely exceeded my expectations. It is a buffet style brunch. There are stations lined up throughout the food serving area. There are so many tasty things I will try and remember it all. They had a waffle station with tons of toppings including fruit and whipped cream. There is an egg station with toppings to include fresh crab meat, cheese and veggies. One of the highlights for me was the grits station. There were three types of grits. There was a shrimp and grits, cheese grits and parmesan chicken grits. I only had the shrimp and grits but they were very tasty. One of the people in my group had the French toast casserole and they enjoyed that. There were some lunch items I saw such as catfish bites, lasagna and cornbread casserole. They also had plenty of desserts to choose from. I had a mini strawberry cupcake that was very tasty. But there are many different cakes as well. They had a biscuit and scone section which I enjoyed. The sweet potato biscuits were really good. The only thing I didn't care for was the price of the mimosas. There was a mimosa bar and you can add your own juice and fruits to it. However for $6 a glass the flute was tiny and filled barely halfway to the top with champagne. That was a $3 glass at best. I would not get that again when I returned. This hidden gem is a wonderful little restaurant tucked away in a little corner on the Boulevard. It's something we never would have found if we weren't looking specifically for it for dinner one night. We actually had a hard time finding it. When I say hidden, it really is pretty well hidden. But I'm really glad we did find it because the search was definitely well worth the wait. When we got to the restaurant, there was a small party taking place in one of the rooms, but the staff gladly sat is in another area of the restaurant where we were the only ones dining at the time. From what I saw, the space is actually quite small. But they made great use of the space that they had. Their food was amazing! I loved every bite of my food. My cocktail was perfectly made. The presentation of their food was absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to come back and try this restaurant again. It's a lovely restaurant with great food. read more

Surprised again and again.........I have been to Sweetwater with a very dear friend of mine on several occasions and each and every time, I am surprised again by the food. Not only are the prices reasonable but the food itself is outstanding, how does Ms. Jody and the staff continually serve, the freshest vegetables year round, the freshest fish, the tenderest meat in a casserole? When you are seated the staff is very attentive and you are then greeted with a wonderful plate of sweet potato biscuits. I just call it dessert, have it first and not worry about it later, but that will come with another visit, I'm sure. Yesterday's meal off the Speal Menu was no different: The Soup of The Day - Roasted Red Pepper w/Gouda - my word just the sound made my mouth want to try this wonderful sounding concoction and I'm so glad that I did! In a tomato bisque base were roasted red bell peppers and chunks of gouda cheese. My mouth was thanking me all the way to my stomach. What a luxury, not acidic one bit, on the contrary you would never know you were eating a tomato based soup. Very hearty! Even after reheating my husband couldn't believe what he was eating, he had only the highest praise for the soup. The Country Plate - a Beef Casserole which was layered and full of beef, onions and just plain goodness topped with cheese and breadcrumbs, a side of sauteed veggies that consisited of zucchini, squash, red bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and artichoke hearts, all with a very generous side of cheese grits topped with bacon. Need I say anything more? Except, mmmmm good!!!!!!! Had to take an order home to the hubby for his dinner, I was so stuffed I was not cooking!!!!! Another plate ordered off the Special Menu - Tilapia - was served over rice, also included a side of the veggies. Nothing was left on that plate either! But what brought me into Sweetwater in the first place was to try the Shrimp Grits - a generous serving of grits with cheese, and a nice sized shrimp topped with crumbled bacon and green onions. This little tasty fare only added to my appetite which is why I was so stuffed someone should have rolled me to my vehicle! I already knew what the cheese grits tasted like so my taste buds were just waiting for that extra flavor of the shrimp! I was not disappointed! Came here for my team's monthly lunch. First, the decor is beautiful. Very nice interior from the moment you walk in. I called ahead and made reservations. Pros: Promptly seated Beautiful decor Clean bathrooms Delicious fries Cons: Slow service Server only refilled drinks once Server was MIA most of the time Waited almost 45 minutes to be served food Waited 5-10 minutes before our drink order was taken Complimentary sweet potato biscuits were cold and dry Sweet tea wasn't sweet enough I don't recall the server asking if we enjoyed our food Small portions Pricey Menu prices are different from what's online Grits in my shrimp and grits needed more salt Overall, the poor service set the tone. I didn't think our server was all that friendly anyways. Point blank, I'm glad I tried this restaurant because I bookmarked it.
