Lemon Pepper Chicken & Crab Risotto
    Lee M.

Visited for our 11th years anniversary. Five stars for service. Four stars for food. Ambiance is nice and appears to be well maintained. The food quality tasted very premium and lux, but it lack some favors. It wasn't until the end of eating my dish that I realized it was supposed to be lemon pepper chicken. I truly like the taste of chicken so I did enjoy my dish however I really didn't taste a lemon or a pepper. My husband order the porterhouse medium. It was cooked to perfection and tender on both sides of the meat however I didn't taste an herb, seasoning, or pinch of salt. A little underwhelming for the price.

10/10! We came to celebrate a special occasion. We were greeted with such warmth. Our main server was Emanuel. What a gem!!! He was so kind and attentive. He made sure we were taken care of during our entire meal. Our drinks and bread were never sparse. We ordered two cocktails to start. My husband got one with egg white that he said was perfectly done. I got their take on the spicy marg. I forget the name of it, but it was perfectly balanced! It was flavorful, not overly spicy, and packed a punch without tasting the liquor. Best spicy margarita I've ever had. My husband ended up ordering one too! We got the foie gras for our appetizer. It came with a blueberry chutney and toasted bread. Absolutely delicious. The sweet chutney mixed with the rich foie gras hit the spot. We almost ordered another. We ordered the ribeye and duck two ways for our entrees. The ribeye was perfectly cooked medium rare as ordered. It was seasoned well, but not overdone in any way. The duck melted in our mouths. I enjoyed having it cooked both ways on the plate. It was also cooked medium rare. The sauce was the perfect compliment. Along with the fresh green beans and potatoes. We got garlic spinach and the lobster corn salad as our sides to share. Both were good, but definitely would've enjoyed more lobster in the salad. We were so full from dinner that we didn't order dessert, but they sent out champagne on the house for us to celebrate. Every single member of the team was so kind and personable. They provided us with hot towels to cleanse our hands. Kept the table clear of crumbs and empty plates. The dining space wasn't overly crowded or loud. It wasn't too bright or too dark either. It felt intimate and special. We will definitely be back. Again, shoutout to Emanuel for being a rockstar!

Came in for a business dinner on a weeknight and as soon as I came in, I realized that it was good that I made a reservation because they were packed. Just for your awareness, there's a dresscode here, and rightly so, it's definitely an upscale restaurant. We sat at a hi-top in the bar area, which is a nice, cellar-looking area in the lower level of the restaurant. Our server was excellent! She explained that she's one of the sommeliers there and provided some pretty good feedback on their wine selection. Their menu is fairly typical of upper-end, prime steakhouses. There were many appetizing items to choose from, I had a tough time deciding. I was leaning towards their fried shrimp entrée, especially after seeing other people's pictures of it on social media. I would never normally get this, but their shrimp pics looked amazing. I started with their Greek salad - This was a HUGE salad, big enough for an entrée, especially if you add a protein to it. It was fabulous! Lots of fresh veggies in it, the dressing was excellent, and the flavors were so very good! This is definitely worthy of splitting, which I'll do next time I return. Next up was my entrée and I chose their smaller filet with an add-on of fried shrimp. I really wanted to try this shrimp and this was a way that I could try their beef and the shrimp and this was an absolutely AMAZING entrée selection!! The shrimp were HUGE! They were perfectly and beautifully battered and fried and looked stunning! The steak was spot-on! I ordered medium rare plus and if I had to guess from looking at it, it was probably 134-135 degrees! The flavor was great too! Their steak is definitely worthy of eating without any add-on or sauce. For sides we tried their Mashed Potatoes and their Haricot Verts and both were outstanding! The nice thing about this place is they actually list half portions of sides in their menu! Many places offer it, but you have to ask and if it's just two people dining, half portions are the perfect size. Save room for dessert, they offer many options! In my case, I was so full, I simply opted for a scoop of their blood orange sorbet and it was the best finish for a great dinner. Definitely will return and would recommend Byrd & Baldwin Bros for a nice evening and great dinner experience!

Excellent steakhouse! The server explained everything really well and was attentive to my table. I tried a wedge salad, steak, asparagus, and mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious and steak was perfectly cooked.

Byrd & Baldwin is perfect date night and special occasion venue. The atmosphere was calming amid the dim lighting. The hot hand towel before dinner sets the tone. The staff is friendly and helpful with choosing your perfect meal. The she-crab soup is a must! If you are looking to wow for a business dinner or celebrate a wedding, or just impress a date this is the place to be.

So far, so good! I loved the Greek salad. This was definitely large enough to share. Next was I ate airline chicken breast with a crab risotto. Generous portion. Nicole and Laura provided 5 star service. Thank you for your attention to detail

Visited for a birthday dinner and had such a great time! We went on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't busy, which made for a relaxed evening. The ambiance was very nice--perfect for a special occasion. I had the crabcake entrée, and it was absolutely delicious. For dessert, we tried the New York Cheesecake (so good!) and a few scoops of sorbet--mango was hands down my favorite. That homemade cheesecake alone is worth coming back for!

I had the crab cakes and mashed potatoes with broccoli and a piece of cheese cake and creme brulee. The crab cakes were 90% crab and 10% filling. So I was pleased with that. The meat was good quality and it was filling. I'm not a crab cake kinda girl normally, but I'd definitely order these again. They had good flavor. The mashed potatoes were good, very creamy. The broccoli was steamed, it wasn't much flavor but I still liked it. It came with asparagus but I switched with someone else. The cheesecake was the star for me. It was a good sized portion, and the raspberry topping was delicious. I especially liked the thick crust!! Yum!! The creme brulee is an acquired taste. If you have texture issues, this definitely isn't the dessert for you. I've had better creme brulee in the past and this wasn't appealing to me. But it looked good. The food isn't cheap, it's certainly a more classy vibe. Somewhere great for a romantic dinner. I'd return for the crab cakes. The take out containers are reusable and they put the food in nice paper bags. Reservations are necessary if you have 5-8 people in your party, which they have a private room for. Also the dress code is business casual, and children under 12 aren't allowed. You should check out their website first if you want to know the rules.

FIVE STARS! We came after a few recommendations from family and friends. From the ease of making a reservation to the exceptional service, this place backed up the hype. The food speaks for itself and they do not skimp on the portions. We felt like our presence was valued by the staff; felt special. It's apparent that is the level of service given to all but it felt good! The vibe is perfect for date nights, special occasions, or just a relaxing dinner with friends. We will absolutely be back and will recommend our friends and family now. The only negative is I had called the day before to arrange a birthday dessert for my partner and it was forgotten.

If you're looking for a wonderful place to enjoy an upscale dining experience, you should check out Byrd & Baldwin Bros just off Granby Street in the heart of downtown Norfolk. They really know how to make their customers feel special. The food is amazing and the bartenders are cranking out craft cocktails that are creative and delicious. If you have the time, ask for a tour of their Wine Cellar. Be prepared, it's a constant 50 something degrees down there so bundle up.

Hubs & I had a nice date night at Byrd & Baldwin yesterday evening, thanks to a generous gift from friends. High-end steakhouses are not generally in our wheelhouse, but it was great for a change of pace! This one also comes with a strict dress code, which they note on the website as well as a posted sign just outside the entrance. The restaurant is housed off Granby Street in the heart of downtown Norfolk. Entrance is on Brooke Ave and valet parking is offered. The fee is $7. When my husband asked if he paid at pick up, the valet affirmed and mentioned that "tips are greatly appreciated." It was a little off-putting and not the best first impression to start our night. The entrance is up a flight of stairs and we were immediately greeted by the host. I had reserved bar high-top seating, but he offered the main dining room. The table suggested was right at the entrance, so we declined. We were escorted downstairs to the cozy bar area. It's more dimly-lit than the dining room, but it was welcoming with lots of dark wood and iron decor, a wine cellar, full bar and a spacious private dining room. We were greeted immediately by our server and offered tap or bottled water while we browsed the extensive wine and cocktail menus. The bar is most definitely not recommended for those looking for an intimate evening. Between the ambient sound and the squeaky floor above, it is far from quiet. This did not deter us. I really liked the atmosphere of this dining space. Our server and the bartender traded off service during our visit. The bartender was very friendly and pleasant. Our regular server, while prompt, had a few too many rehearsed one-liners and it started to feel very awkward by the end of our meal. Some details about our selections: The Godfather Cocktail - B&B's twist on the Old Fashioned. Husband wanted a whiskey selection that was more bitter, less bright so selected this. He commented that it was good, but not great and he still favors the Old Fashioned at Becca. Luck be a Lady - A good balance of sweet and sour. Strong blueberry and lime flavors. We were served an amuse bouche of toast point with sliced beef and a red curry sauce. It was heavenly! Dinner rolls are also served with whipped butter. These were melt-in-the-mouth good with just a hint of sweetness. Oysters Rockefeller - Good flavor. Full of parm and spinach, which I love. The bacon was, however, in large pieces, very fatty and undercooked. I wish it had been crispier to balance the soft oyster. Salmon - We both really wanted to order this, but I relented and let husband get it. If the risotto had just been more seasoned, it would have been perfect. The flavor of the caramelized onion topping was a great accompaniment. The salmon was just slightly overcooked to his request of medium, but still tasted delicious. The crab and spinach risotto was full of lump crabmeat. Crab Cake - Literally 2 giant balls of crab. I couldn't find any filling, so they must get the thing to hold together by sheer willpower. It came with steamed asparagus and red-skinned mashed potatoes. This entree was spectacular! Overall, it was a very nice experience. I'd like to return to enjoy the main dining room and few other entrees!

Perfect. I enjoyed the four Fried Oysters, Fried flawlessly without the bivalves becoming rubbery. 2nd course, my wife enjoyed the Peri-Peri Chicken Penne. The breast of chicken was moist throughout, not dry. The penne pasta with the Romesco Cream Sauce was very creamy and delicious says my better half. I tried the Fried Catfish. A bed of creamy Grits; then some Braised Collards stewed perfectly with a surprise - pieces of Ham Hock meat imbedded - on top of the Grits; then on the very top a perfectly fried huge piece of Catfish filet with Key Lime Remoulade sauce on the side. It was a little dark in the basement but I got used to the lighting

For lunch we started with the crab clam chowder, tuna bites (delicious!), and crab dip with homemade tortillas. We got the fried shrimp dinner - it came with hush puppies, fries AND mashed potatoes with gravy. Everything was surprisingly delicious. Even the water was good. For dessert we had the blueberry cobbler cheesecake and it was ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. Still thinking about it. We came back for dinner THE SAME NIGHT and got the fried shrimp dinner AGAIN, plus the Old Bay wings and the meatloaf with mashed potatoes. The meatloaf is huge - enough for four people. I'm literally eating the leftovers today, the day after, and it's still amazing. The chili aioli they give you is pretty good. My least favorite was the blue cheese dressing, but that's just personal preference. Jamie, our dinner server, was amazing. Too nice to be true - genuinely kind, conversational and attentive. Our lunch server was definitely on her job and got everything right, just not as congenial as Jamie. She was definitely attentive to our needs but maybe just shy. Yes the interior is a little dated, but that's the case with most restaurants on the water. They have outdoor seating, really nice views of the marina, and great ambiance. Anytime we are in the Portsmouth area we will definitely be back at Fish N Slips. Highly recommend! Another recommendation is that the business update their website pricing which is drastically different than the restaurant menu. This may catch guests by surprise. Otherwise, thank you for two dynamic experiences.

We got there with about 30-40 mins left in happy hour (3-7 pm) ended up getting 18 raw local oysters that were huge and an order of peel and eat shrimp. They have 1 dollar oysters or clams, raw or steamed. My girlfriends dad got a shrimp po boy and coleslaw. His meal came with frys but the bartender/ waitress got him the coleslaw he ordered after we brought it to her attention. The food comes out as its ready not as a whole order in our case, which was just fine for us. This place is in a really cool setting, sitting up high over the boat slips. Our only drawback was our bartender/ waitress did not seem to have much energy. We had to get her attention when we wanted more drinks or the check... she might have just been having a rough day. She was not rude in any manner... just not very attentive. I would definitely come back! Wanted a shirt and when i asked the hostess she went through every shirt looking for my size... she could not find a xl that wasent pink. She said she'd check with the other hostess. When we were leaving there was a nice gray xl waiting for me .... I appreciate her effort as 80% of my wardrobe is places ive been too... I had about 20-30 places on my yelp list to try on this weeklong vacation to portsmouth and virginia beach. Im glad fish and slips was one i got to!

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

The service is always great and the hosts/servers are always friendly. Our go to is the meatloaf. when you're looking for a good ol' comfort food - that's the best. They also have amazing desserts that are worth a try. We found this restaurant good for families (including our toddler)! Food was toddler approved!
