Incredibly disappointed, especially given how great everyone and everywhere online has said this place was. I was very excited to take my now-fiancée here to celebrate our engagement. I booked the private dining room in the cellar, and while the atmosphere was romantic, it was too dark to see the food in the dark deep-dish tray in front of me. I would've asked for a different plate if I wasn't confident it would take 30 minutes for me to see any waitstaff during that time. During the two and a half hours we'd been there, we had ordered a couple drinks, appetizers, and entrees, and had seen staff maybe half a dozen times. As my friends and family would have feared, it appeared they were correct: in the private cellar room that you pay $100 for special treatment, you are instead met with neglect and forgetfulness. I really wanted to have a great experience here, you would think paying extra would ensure that. I honestly think one is better off not sitting in the private dining room as you will actually be waited on. The food was good- pricey, sure, but good, nonetheless. Definitely wouldn't get desert, as God knows how long that would take. Just very disappointed by the lack of attention. It took 30 minutes for them to bring us complementary bread after we were sat. The food quality tasted very premium and lux, but it lack some favors. It wasn't until the end of eating my dish that I realized it was supposed to be lemon pepper chicken. I enjoyed having it cooked both ways on the plate. It was also cooked medium rare. The sauce was the perfect compliment. Along with the fresh green beans and potatoes. We got garlic spinach and the lobster corn salad as our sides to share. Both were good, but definitely would've enjoyed more lobster in the salad. Came in for a business dinner on a weeknight and as soon as I came in, I realized that it was good that I made a reservation because they were packed. Just for your awareness, there's a dresscode here, and rightly so, it's definitely an upscale restaurant. We sat at a hi-top in the bar area, which is a nice, cellar-looking area in the lower level of the restaurant. Our server was excellent! She explained that she's one of the sommeliers there and provided some pretty good feedback on their wine selection. Their menu is fairly typical of upper-end, prime steakhouses. There were many appetizing items to choose from, I had a tough time deciding. I was leaning towards their fried shrimp entrée, especially after seeing other people's pictures of it on social media. I would never normally get this, but their shrimp pics looked amazing. I started with their Greek salad - This was a HUGE salad, big enough for an entrée, especially if you add a protein to it. It was fabulous! Lots of fresh veggies in it, the dressing was excellent, and the flavors were so very good! This is definitely worthy of splitting, which I'll do next time I return. Next up was my entrée and I chose their smaller filet with an add-on of fried shrimp. I really wanted to try this shrimp and this was a way that I could try their beef and the shrimp and this was an absolutely AMAZING entrée selection!! The shrimp were HUGE! They were perfectly and beautifully battered and fried and looked stunning! The steak was spot-on! I ordered medium rare plus and if I had to guess from looking at it, it was probably 134-135 degrees! The flavor was great too! Their steak is definitely worthy of eating without any add-on or sauce. For sides we tried their Mashed Potatoes and their Haricot Verts and both were outstanding! The nice thing about this place is they actually list half portions of sides in their menu! Many places offer it, but you have to ask and if it's just two people dining, half portions are the perfect size. Save room for dessert, they offer many options! In my case, I was so full, I simply opted for a scoop of their blood orange sorbet and it was the best finish for a great dinner. I had the crab cakes and mashed potatoes with broccoli and a piece of cheese cake and creme brulee. The crab cakes were 90% crab and 10% filling. So I was pleased with that. The meat was good quality and it was filling. I'm not a crab cake kinda girl normally, but I'd definitely order these again. They had good flavor. The mashed potatoes were good, very creamy. The broccoli was steamed, it wasn't much flavor but I still liked it. It came with asparagus but I switched with someone else. The cheesecake was the star for me. It was a good sized portion, and the raspberry topping was delicious. I especially liked the thick crust!! Yum!! The creme brulee is an acquired taste. If you have texture issues, this definitely isn't the dessert for you. I've had better creme brulee in the past and this wasn't appealing to me. But it looked good. The food isn't cheap, it's certainly a more classy vibe. Somewhere great for a romantic dinner. I'd return for the crab cakes. The take out containers are reusable and they put the food in nice paper bags. Reservations are necessary if you have 5-8 people in your party, which they have a private room for. He ordered the Porterhouse steak and I ordered the Rack of Lamb. Since the Rack of Lamb can take up to 45 mins, we were served bread often and it was very soft and warm. We also ordered the beef tartare as an app and (in my opinion) it was okay, it definitely has an acquired taste to it. Overall, the experience was very pleasant, it's just expensive. Hubs & I had a nice date night at Byrd & Baldwin yesterday evening, thanks to a generous gift from friends. High-end steakhouses are not generally in our wheelhouse, but it was great for a change of pace! This one also comes with a strict dress code, which they note on the website as well as a posted sign just outside the entrance. The restaurant is housed off Granby Street in the heart of downtown Norfolk. Entrance is on Brooke Ave and valet parking is offered. The fee is $7. When my husband asked if he paid at pick up, the valet affirmed and mentioned that "tips are greatly appreciated." It was a little off-putting and not the best first impression to start our night. The entrance is up a flight of stairs and we were immediately greeted by the host. I had reserved bar high-top seating, but he offered the main dining room. The table suggested was right at the entrance, so we declined. We were escorted downstairs to the cozy bar area. It's more dimly-lit than the dining room, but it was welcoming with lots of dark wood and iron decor, a wine cellar, full bar and a spacious private dining room. We were greeted immediately by our server and offered tap or bottled water while we browsed the extensive wine and cocktail menus. The bar is most definitely not recommended for those looking for an intimate evening. Between the ambient sound and the squeaky floor above, it is far from quiet. This did not deter us. I really liked the atmosphere of this dining space. Our server and the bartender traded off service during our visit. The bartender was very friendly and pleasant. Our regular server, while prompt, had a few too many rehearsed one-liners and it started to feel very awkward by the end of our meal. Some details about our selections: The Godfather Cocktail - B&B's twist on the Old Fashioned. Husband wanted a whiskey selection that was more bitter, less bright so selected this. He commented that it was good, but not great and he still favors the Old Fashioned at Becca. Luck be a Lady - A good balance of sweet and sour. Strong blueberry and lime flavors. We were served an amuse bouche of toast point with sliced beef and a red curry sauce. It was heavenly! Dinner rolls are also served with whipped butter. These were melt-in-the-mouth good with just a hint of sweetness. Oysters Rockefeller - Good flavor. Full of parm and spinach, which I love. The bacon was, however, in large pieces, very fatty and undercooked. I wish it had been crispier to balance the soft oyster. Salmon - We both really wanted to order this, but I relented and let husband get it. If the risotto had just been more seasoned, it would have been perfect. The flavor of the caramelized onion topping was a great accompaniment. The salmon was just slightly overcooked to his request of medium, but still tasted delicious. The crab and spinach risotto was full of lump crabmeat. Crab Cake - Literally 2 giant balls of crab. I couldn't find any filling, so they must get the thing to hold together by sheer willpower. It came with steamed asparagus and red-skinned mashed potatoes. This entree was spectacular! Overall, it was a very nice experience. DO NOT do private events here. Horrible business practices. I made a reservation for a dinner event in their back room. I signed the agreement and paid $3500 for the deposit. 2 weeks prior to our event I requested to reschedule the date. They said I could not reschedule the event and I would lose my $3500 deposit. I tried to work with them several times on this and they refused. I cancelled then cancelled the event. A day after the cancelled event date they charged my card another $1300. I called and spoke to the manager who said she would have to check into this because she saw the cancelation and not sure why there would be a charge. They later emailed back and said that two mystery people came to the dinner, and they served them food and drink and had to charge the minimum for service and food. Why would they serve anyone if the event was cancelled and there was no speaker or company representative. I asked for the manager again and they offered my a $500 reduction in the bill. I stated that wasnt acceptable. Since this they have not made any attempt to resolve the issue. I book events all over the country and have had no issue in rescheduling events in other reputable places. I know Norfolk has many other options and I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere!!! read more

Byrd & Baldwin is a great place for celebratory dinners, fancy date nights, etc. It's one of the only places in the area that has a dress code, is adult-only and caters to a nice, adult high-end experience. We made the reservation a few weeks in advance, via phone since online you can only make reservation for 5 people or less. We had 6 and were able to make the reservation easily. Arrived on a Friday night, took advantage of the $7 valet service and went inside. Service was perfect. I believe our servers name was Dennis. He took great care of us, gave great recommendations and enhanced our experience greatly. Cocktails: Everyone loved the espresso martinis. Great wine list, great bourbon and whiskey list. Appetizers: The She Crab Soup was probably my favorite. It was salty, flavorful, delicious and full of large crab chunks. Only complaint was that it was barely more than lukewarm. We also got the escargot, which was the opposite: piping hot. The crostinis were delicious and crusty and the escargot was perfectly prepared. Caesar salad seemed to need a bit more pepper, but overall good. My friend ordered the tartare and although I didn't try it, she wasn't super impressed. It seemed to need some type of cracker/wonton/crispy aspect. Entrees: Our table tried many cuts of steak and all were delicious. I got the filet which was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. The dry-aged ribeye was the table favorite and what I would order at a future visit. The pork chop was insanely delicious, incredibly tender and overall my favorite bite of the night. The salmon and duck entrees were also quite good. One small issue with the duck: parts of the sauce seemed to be cooked nicely but others had an intense liquor flavor. The duck was cooked to perfection. Sides: Our only area of disappointment. Every side we ordered lacked flavor. The creamed spinach, the roasted potatoes, the four cheese mac and cheese and the crab and brie mac and cheese were all lacking salt, noticeably. We were surprised since the meats were all perfectly seasoned and salted. Sides are often some of my favorite parts of the meal at lovely steakhouses, so we had high hopes. He did an incredible job, ensuring that we wanted for nothing. The food was disappointing. My bill was $170 and it sucked that I didn't enjoy my food. For my appetizer, I ordered what was supposed to be shrimp with tomato remoulade sauce. I received fried shrimp that was over breaded and not seasoned well. The sauce was a bit too tangy but I think somebody would like it. Just not my preference. I then ordered duck two ways as my Andre. That included duck confit and crispy duck breast. The duck confit was very good. The crispy duck breast was undercooked. It came with the cranberry reduction sauce that did not make sense with the meal. The green beans were delicious and cooked perfect perfectly. And then ordered a crème brûlée as my dessert. The crème brûlée custard was a bit on the sweet side. But still good. I had two drinks. One drink called autumn something. That one was a rum based mule. It was okay. It was very unique. My second drink was a rum (Mount Gay) and Coke. It was not that great. It was not enough Coke to balance out the taste of the rum. I sat with a table of eight. So there were mixed reviews all around. Not many complaints on the drinks. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Alexander was our waiter. He gave great recommendations, was very attentive and thoughtful! He also had valet pull up our vehicles as we were closing out our tab which was greatly appreciated. If you don't want to valet, there is limited street parking nearby if you don't mind a short walk. Food wise, we had the ribeye with the scallops and Gouda risotto (special), the fried gulf shrimp and the bone-in pork chop. Everything was delicious. EVERYTHING. The bone marrow was extremely rich, with outstanding flavor and the oysters were wonderful. For our main courses we had the rack of lamb, a black diamond ribeye off of the night's specials and the tomahawk Wagyu. We were blown away by the quality and masterful cooking of each dish. The lamb was so tender and the tomahawk wagyu had to be the best steak any member of my family has ever tried. Generally disappointing food. They started me with an amuse bouche of steak on a slice of bread. It had obviously been plated some time before service because the arugula garnish was withered and stuck to the plate. The steak was dry/tough. Then I had their beet salad which was served with an obscene amount of red dressing. The plate was painted/puddled with dressing. I was able to eat only the part of the salad which wasn't in the excess dressing zone. See the photo. Then I had the salmon which was pretty stiff, dry, and salty (crunchy salty like course or finishing salt). I spotted but one morsel of crab in the extremely oily crab and spinach risotto. See the photo. Finally I tried their crème brûlée, which was stiff and overcooked (more like flan). 2 bites was enough. A great brûlée is just barely set and jiggly. See the photo. Byrd & Baldwin had been on my restaurant bucket list for the longest time. That's why we made a reservation at this restaurant on my birthday. Ambiance: I already knew that the restaurant would be classy, but I didn't realize how elegant it was until we arrived. There are two floors, and we were seated on the first floor. The tables were set with plate chargers and offered hot towels, which was a first for me. Service: Our service made us feel like we were special. They gave me a card for my birthday. Everyone was attentive, especially our server. Food: We all ordered a ribeye steak, la carte broccoli, and mashed potatoes. Our steak was cooked to perfection depending on we want our steaks were cooked. At the same time, they were juicy. For most places, the flavors were only outside the steak; however, that is not the case with Byrd & Baldwin. The insides were flavorful as well. The a la carte broccoli and the mashed potatoes were good for 4 people. Since we are a party of 3, they were too much for us. The sides were flavorful as well. Price: Since Byrd & Baldwin is a classy restaurant, I imagined the food prices would be high. However, it is not the case. Compared to the other steakhouses - some are less classy-Byrd & Baldwin's prices were lower. They are also reasonable, especially with the quality of food and service you'll get. I cannot think of any bad things about this restaurant. Byrd & Baldwin is definitely one of my favorite restaurants. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. read more

We decided to check this place out for date night. The ambience was great as well as the service. My boyfriend got the raw oysters for an appetizer which he loved. I got the fillet & shrimp which were both great. For sides I got creamed spinach and the roasted corn & lobster salad which was my favorite!! My boyfriend got the lamb chops which were very tasty, the sauce that accompanied it was very good.He got the lobster mac as his side, which could've used a little more seasoning in my opinion. The fresh bread and butter was nice, along with the fresh warm towels. We tried the sangria for cocktails which were pretty good. Definitely would recommend this place for a nice evening out!! read more
