Recently worked with Janeen to sleep train our 4.5 month old daughter and had great results. Going into the process she was sleeping in a weighted sleep suit in a bassinet in our room with one or more wakings during the night. By the end of the two week process, she is now sleeping in a sleep sack in her crib through the entire night on her own. Aside from the initial consultation which is very helpful, we found the active feedback Janeen provided through a shared Google spreadsheet to be a super valuable part of the process that helped us apply and reinforce the tools we were learning. I'm knocking on wood with one hand as I write this review because I don't want my good luck to run out... I never thought I'd need to hire a sleep consultant because my baby was a good sleeper from the beginning. She was never a great napper, but she pretty much came out of me sleeping thru the night. I considered myself to be a pretty lucky mom. Then when my daughter turned 9 months she decided she was done sleeping thru the night. She'd wake up around midnight for 3-4 hours a night. She wanted to just hang out with us, but we weren't really up for a midnight party when there was a long day of work ahead. We tried having her cry it out, but my stubborn little one (she takes after me) can scream for hours. After 3-4 weeks of exhaustion I placed a call to Janeen at Swellbeing who I have heard speak at a Bump Club Chicago* event when I was pregnant. Janeen was very sympathetic and even squeezed us in for a consultation that very night. Phew- I was eager for a good night sleep. Janeen charges $295 for a phone consultation and $395 if she comes to your home. She claims she gets the same results either way so we went the less expensive phone route. An hour after hanging up with Janeen I was filling out a survey for her and already realized that I need to make some schedule changes. I had prided myself on not being one of those crazy moms who runs home for naptime...and instead would run errands, see friends, etc while my baby napped in her stroller. Apparently by not being one of those crazy moms I was just making myself and my baby even crazier because Baby R was extremely overtired. And while you'd think overtired babies would sleep better at night it turns out that's not the case. My hubby and I spoke to Janeen for over an hour and made some of the changes she recommended immediately (ex: all naps in the crib, sleepsack for all naps and nighttime sleeping, white noise machine, etc). Baby R slept thru the night the very first night. At first I thought it was a nice coincidence, but after 11 straight nights of blissful sleep I decided that was the best $295 I've ever spent. Janeen even gave us a few sleep tips for when going on vacation. Baby R's 1st night on vacation was a bit rough, which was to be expected after missing her naps and being in a strange new place. However, she's even now "sleeping like a baby" on vacation. I've totally become that crazy mom that now rushes home for naps (yes, even on vacation), but it doesn't seem so crazy now that Baby R is sleeping 11-13 hrs/night again. She listened to our sleep concerns with our 20 month old (getting up earlier and earlier, 4am 3:30am, and not napping in his bed alone), asked lots of questions and offered not only advice but provided a plan. Just before my son turned 4, he suddenly became scared of sleeping by himself. My once "perfect" sleeper was now up until 9 or later, waking several times during the night and, as a result, beyond crabby (as were my husband and I). I cannot say enough good things about Janeen and Swellbeing! The only reason I even have the wherewithal to write this review is because my seven-month-old slept last night--and, therefore, I slept last night. And that's real sleep, for the record, not the crazypants definition of some baby sleep books that call sleeping from midnight-5 a.m. "sleeping through the night." Our total: baby, 12.5 hours. Me, 8. That's sleeping through the night. I should explain that I never thought this would happen. I mean, eventually, I figured my daughter would get older and start sleeping longer stretches on her own (I prayed, at least), but as a nervous new parent who hates to see her baby cry, nighttime had basically become a test of my own endurance. Every night I would rock her to sleep in my arms, then gently put her in the crib. She'd sleep an hour or two, three if we were lucky, then startle herself awake. I'd get her back to sleep with rocking and try to sleep a bit myself, always a bit on edge waiting for the next wake-up, which was surely to follow another 2 to 3 to 4 times on any given night. During the day, naps were 40 minutes at most. Lucky for me, my daughter is generally a very happy little girl, even without much sleep, but, still, over time, the sleep deprivation started to wear on me. When other moms would tell me about their babies sleeping 12 hours, I would walk away from the conversation feeling like a failure of a parent, but I also knew that a strict Cry It Out method wasn't the right fit for our family. I didn't know what to do. I read book after book (No Cry Sleep Solution, etc.) searching for a program, a plan, but when you're running on such little sleep, it's hard to make it through an entire book, much less formulate a coherent game plan on your own. I'd end up feeling more defeated and go back to just rocking her to sleep, cause even though I knew she wouldn't sleep for long, at least she'd sleep a little bit and maybe I would too. When I finally contacted Janeen, I had reached the point where the lack of sleep was taking its toll on me. I was unable to focus at work, my health was suffering, and I had an uneasy feeling that I was doing my baby a disservice by not helping her learn how to self-soothe. Something needed to change. My goals going in were modest: reduce the night wake-ups to 1-2 times per night. Fast-forward two weeks later, my daughter is sleeping soundly without wake-ups and I feel like a new mom! Janeen worked with us to create a gentle, phased plan that fit with our parenting style. She gave me the confidence to see that my daughter could learn to self-soothe and she held my hand all the way through with daily check-ins. I contacted Janeen as our 9 month year old son was waking up every couple of hours, so I ended up co-sleeping as it was easier (and I did love it) but I was so over getting woken constantly to nurse him back to sleep all the time. I was exhausted and crabby and the situation had to change. He also took really short naps and as he freaked out so much whenever we tried to put him in his crib, I was nursing him to sleep in the bed and watching the monitor like a hawk for every nap and at bedtime until I would join him. I was always worried he would roll off the end of the bed or get trapped at the edges which were pushed up against the wall with the crib pushed up on the other side. So even his short nap times weren't much of a break for me, I had to sit pretty quietly close to the monitor, staring at it every few minutes with the sound on max. Quite a crazy situation I got myself into! And this was my second child! So not my first rodeo, but the first slept like a dream right away. I knew what needed to happen, he needed to learn to put himself back to sleep, not through me nursing him. And he needed to sleep in his crib. I read a lot of sleep books, and searched the internet for solutions. I didn't know which way to go, I tried CIO without a plan and it didn't work out and I just felt terrible. I tried the no-cry solutions and they didn't do much for me. I needed a one-person coach to guide me. Janeen came to our house and gave some tips on what to change with our son's sleeping arrangements. One change we made had an immediate effect, Jack took a 3 hour nap that afternoon! The first few nights of CIO with check ins (our plan chosen over 3 suggested options) were hard, but he put himself back to sleep from the very first night. I heard him wake 4 times and only nursed him once. For about a week I nursed him once, and then he started sleeping right through from 7pm-7am!!! We could not believe it. And now he takes really long naps and I am getting so much more done! I'm feeling so much better. I don't worry he's going to suffocate or roll off the bed constantly, it's such a relief. I loved having Janeen to email every day for the 2 week period, I asked tons of questions and always got a reply pretty quickly, even on the weekend days. I also had an excel chart to fill out each day which was a really helpful tool to get Jack on a schedule and to see the progress. I cannot recommend her enough! She was very nice and personable when I met her and I tell all of my mom friends with similar problems she's the lady to go to if you want to go this route. I am eternally grateful! I understand this might seem like quite an expense to some families, but for all the time she spent with coming to our house and then emailing and for all the tools I was given, it was priceless. Janeen was EXCELLENT! We struggled with night time sleep with our 8 month old as she would wake anywhere from 2-4 times a night. With the assistance of Janeen, we were able to get her to fully sleep the night without any milk within 5 days! I resisted the idea of using a sleep consultant initially, but would have gladly used her and much earlier in our baby's life had I known it would help this much and this quickly. For the most part, we had to barely do any cry it out method either so it was a very easy and calm transition for both parents and baby. We really enjoyed working with Janeen. Our five year old has never been a great sleeper--he'd have "upswing" periods that kept us from really tackling the problem for years. Janeen was very easy and professional to speak with over the phone...taking time to understand our unique child and situation. She was also empathetic to recent challenges in his life...a move, a hurricane, the start of kindergarten and encouraged us to continue to help him work through his feelings (rather than just implement a "system" without acknowledgement of the circumstances. Our progress was slow, but we are all doing a lot better (sleep deprivation really takes a toll!). Our son is going to sleep at a much more reasonable time now and with greater ease. He used to wake frequently and often slept with us half the night. Now he either sleeps through or wakes once and relatively easily goes back to bed with some comfort from us. I am only now fully rested enough to write this review after working with Janeen of Swellbeing! We consulted with Janeen to help us with our 5 month old who would only sleep 3-4 hours at a time and had a serious association with waking up and being nursed back to sleep. Janeen takes an asset-based approach to sleep training. She takes the time to understand what you are doing that works, what you are willing and able to do in terms of sleep training, and uses those tools as the building blocks for a program that works for your family. She is so knowledgeable about various sleep training techniques and coaches you on exactly what to do and when. Then, she provides you with a 2-week program that is specific to you and your family; there is no one-size fits all advice here. But above all that, she is so responsive and supportive throughout the 2 weeks. We contacted Janeen because we desperately needed help with our two kids (22 months and 3.5 years): their sleeping habits were all over the place. We chose the home consultation package. Janeen came to our house and we were able to discuss our situation in much detail. Janeen was very attentive to our needs. For the next two weeks, we were exchanging emails, discussing what we were doing at home to make a transition to a better sleeping situation. Janeen was very helpful, flexible, and patient. Five stars is simply not enough to rate Swellbeing and Janeen. After hours upon hours of reading and researching sleeping for infants and trying to incorporate everything I learned and what seemed like endless sleepless nights I contacted Janeen as my last resort. My 5.5 month old son was waking up 3-7 times per night, mostly to replace the pacifier or for a nightly feeding. After so many months of not sleeping or taking 2-3 hour naps, I couldn't take another sleepless night. Janeen was recommended to me by a co-worker who had success with the sleep consultation and two week plan. I wrote Janeen within 10 minutes of receiving her information! The entire process was very simple. After our phone consultation, Janeen provided a detailed, specific plan for my son. On the first night, we went through 1 hour of crying. By night 6, he was sleeping through the night 11+ hours, no wakings, no feedings. I cannot explain what kind of relief it was! I was finally able to lay down in bed and not worry about how many hours of sleep I would get or what kind of night was ahead. I feel like I have gotten a piece of myself back. Every child and every situation is different. For me it was important to be able to reach out to someone about a specific question and be able to receive exact guidance that would help. My only regret is that I didn't know about Swellbeing sooner! I certainly plan on contacting Janeen in the future for her other services such as potty training and sibling prep. Swellbeing (Janeen Hayward) was recommended to me by my former lactation consultant (who was also very awesome). Janeen has been a Godsend!!!! Our 9 month old was always a terrible sleeper and only worsened over time. She was at the point waking up (screaming) very 45 min. and took 1-2 hours to put back to sleep only to wake in another 45 min. ALL NIGHT LONG. She'd wake up with every noise and every sleep cycle. The only way she was soothed was 1 hour of nursing or co-sleeping with daddy. After long nursing sessions resulting in physical pain, months of sleep deprivation, it was time for help. We read every book, tried every method. We had minimal expectations and would've been happy with waking just 2x/night. I've heard of these babies that sleep 7-7 but couldn't even imagine mine would ever be one of those. Well, we now have that life and it's amazing! Being a therapist myself, I was apprehensive about the approach as I didn't want to use CIO. Janeen was compassionate and flexible. Her approach was a gradual one in which, yes, some crying (inevitable after 9 mos. of nurse to sleep associations) is involved but with her approach you can attend to and pick up your baby rather than ignoring her screams, just the approach I was looking for. By night 3 or 4, our daughter was sleeping through the night with little assistance. We were astounded. It's now been 3 weeks and she's fully sleeping through the night (7-7), no wake ups and takes 2 naps 2-4 hours. I can actually even put her in the crib awake and she'll play herself to sleep. Something I never, ever thought our daughter could do. The strategies weren't anything magical but what made the difference was Janeen's daily email/phone support and knowledge. When things didn't look like they were progressing, Janeen would offer just the right support to stay the course. We are so thankful for Janeen's support. We cannot say enough good things about Swellbeing! When our youngest turned 4 months she regressed in her sleep and would not sleep properly at night or nap during the day. Having my own health issues, getting enough rest was essential so I knew we needed help. After doing much research we found Janeen. She was so easy to work with, empathetic and provided many useful strategies for my husband and I. The training was adapted to methods that we were comfortable with. We filled out a chart daily to track sleeping patterns and I spoke with Janeen daily to discuss how the previous night went and what to tweak for the night ahead. This is long overdue! Janeen was an absolute godsend to our family. She helped us in February 2017, when our 2nd born was 8 months old. Our baby girl was sleep trained in that she could fall asleep on her own for the first part of the night, but would continuously wake anywhere from 2-3 times in the middle of the night for milk. 8 months post-partum + a 3.5 year old toddler + sleep deprived parents was not a good combo. We knew we needed some help, but weren't sure if this would work. All it took was a one hour meeting with Janeen (where we described our situation), and she was able to come up with a plan that worked with our family. After one week of following her plan, our baby was sleeping a glorious 12 hours (and so were we!!!). Amazingly, she didn't even need to meet our baby girl! She's that good! And I will also add, we just recently had what seemed to be a sleep-regression with our baby girl (who is now 18 months old), and Janeen was super responsive. All in all, if you ever feel like you're getting nowhere with your baby's sleep, do not even hesitate in calling Janeen.
