How long must one wait for a cheeseburger, fries, and a refill? At the Swiss Bear, about 90 minutes. Was given a coffee when seated, never refilled until our meal came, then never refilled again. They asked if we would like dessert, not at 90 minutes per order thank-you! Atmosphere: Cramped table spacing. Too close. Portions: Average. Prices: On the high side for the service. Tip: I didn't give one other than frequent refills and faster service. Staff: Distant and impersonal. Food: Nothing out of the ordinary, could've, should have been served hot. This review is for the outdoor express. Nice and clean roadside patio. Lots of flowers and plants. The owners made the restaurant and the patio look so pretty from the road, which was what baited me in. But food was meh. Dried and thin schnitzel. Small meat portion for the price, which was not cheap. The fries was the only delicious thing in the meal combo. Maybe the formal dining in restaurant has better food? Otherwise, why are there 4 stars reviews? Do drop by if you really want a nice patio. Otherwise, there are better food elsewhere, easily. read more

This has got to be one of my favourite brunch places to visit. If you are into long drives into the northern parts of Ontario and happen to be in this area, you have to check out this place. Service. We have been here quite often, this is a fabulous family that runs this restaurant and they are so friendly and welcoming. If you go when its full I promise you are going to wait! They make the food to order and do not have the food sitting under a warmer forever. It is delicious and when you get a small serving of fruit with your breakfast ask for a dish of their homemade whip cream .. ohhhh yummmmm All orders are huge .. the biggest complaint I have is that my step daughter does not eat pork ... only a few dishes that she could choose from and she was going to order a salad and French onion soup, unfortunately they were out of soup. The breakfasts are great but bring your appetite ... PS if you have young children you are permitted to play with almost everything they have my granddaughters had a blast with all the bears :) read more

This is just on the schnitzel express part - Positives: schnitzel on the go is a GREAT idea! Beats all the burgers and crap otherwise available on the way to or from cottage! Coleslaw was tasty - wish there was more! Fries were okay. Staff is great - super friendly and attentive. Offered just about anything to make it enjoyable and checked up on us as we were eating. Eating area nice and clean. Downside - (easily fixable) schnitzel wasn't as crispy as I'd normally expect. I understand it was probably not meant to be Vienna style but that's really what I was hoping for. Maybe make Vienna style an option with nice crispy coating. Very friendly staff! The schnitzel was fresh and delicious. I ordered the classic schnitzel on a bun with the rosti (hash browns). The sandwich was massive! MY daughter ordered a meal with a white wine mushroom sauce on the schnitzel with fresh cut fries. She loves it. My wife ordered the Little Bear schnitzel poutine and loved it. The wait for the order was about 25 mins but you know you are getting super fresh food. Well worth the wait. Since it was our first visit we all received a free tart. These tarts are made in store and they are amazing! I usually don't care much for tarts but the pastry and the filling was so tasty and fresh! The owner was very friendly and I am happy a great independent place like this is thriving. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

We are from Texas by way of Miami. My 10 year old daughter and I stopped here on whim on the way to Maynooth for horse camp. The food is different but extremely good. I had the original schnitzel and my daughter had the French toast. The service is super friendly, but be prepared to wait. It was a little busy. We waited 40 minutes for a late lunch. You can tell they make everything fresh, but pack your patience. The wife was so interested in my daughter's story as an equestrian rider and since it was our first time trying the tarts, she gave them to us on the house. We were traveling through the area and stopped on a whim and boy was I glad we did! We ordered 3 fruit tarts: Cherry, peach raspberry and apple....each one was delicious! We took them to go and decided to eat on the picnic table outside, that was the right choice for sure since the yummy, delicious and oh so crumbly streusel topping was all over the place when we were done. It was about closing time and the owner and her son came out to check on us to be sure we didn't need anything before they left, they were extremely nice and we chatted with them for a while. What a treat! We stopped for a late lunch on our way north, and now supper is in question. The eager servers brought us the best schnitzel north of Kitchener - YUM! My wife approved of the accompanying sauerkraut (not my cup of tea, but more for her), and the rosti was superb! More on the schnitzel - super thin, nicely breaded with Emmental & sautéed mushrooms on top - absolutely dee-lish! And then dessert! The restaurant seems to get good reviews. However, when we dropped by at 4 pm on Sunday afternoon on our drive back from cottage, the main restaurant had closed at 3 pm. Schnitzel Express was open. We order a schnitzel dinner $17.40 and a small polish schnitzel $10.00. The service was very slow and the teens in the booth seemed overwhelmed. When the food finally arrived we were very disappointed. The sandwich was small (which I had ordered) There was one piece of playing card size schnitzel, 1/4 inch. It was totally lost in the tasteless bun. At the price should be triple the amount of schnitzel. The dinner had two slightly larger pieces of schnitzel, fries, coleslaw and apples. My husband has a healthy appetite and would have thought that at a cost of $19.67 with HST that there would be enough to fill him up. It was not. Totally underwhelmed, disappointed and feeling ripped off. Won't chance it and return to restaurant which does seem to get better reviews. Not willing to risk being burnt again. Keep driving. Seems odd that hundred of cars are driving home and owners close restaurant at 3 pm read more

We stopped for brunch on a Monday. My husband had their eggs benny with a schnitzel and I had a schnitzel sandwich. Both came with rosti potatoes that were yummy and a small serving of fruit. The plates were hot and the servings were extremely generous....we both ate too much, it was that delicious. Very nice place and really, really clean. I would highly recommend this little restaurant. So we stopped here for lunch on our way to a family event out of town. I had the weiner schnitzel Parisienne (with stewed apples and coleslaw) which was fantastic. Our server was young, a little nervous and very sweet. It was busy and there was only one server when we arrived (serving both sides of the restaurant) but it's a very friendly, clean and welcoming place. The owners are Swiss and the husband is a certified Swiss chef. The pies (baked on the premises using fresh fruit and little sugar) looked absolutely fantastic (so perfect that they could have been fake), so we decided to stop back the next day to pick up some pastries. We stopped in and there were gorgeous pecan pies all over the displays, as well as freshly baked danishes. The tarts caught our eye and I got a cherry one, the boyfriend got a raisin butter tart and a pecan tart. Oh, and I got a peach pie (which I will likely try it tonight, am hoping it's not as good as the cherry or I'm in trouble), which looks gorgeous and smells fantastic! It was still hot out of the oven when we got it. So the cherry tart? It was so deep and fantastic that the tartness of the (fresh!) cherries combines with the sweetness of the sugar and the perfect ratio pastry to fruit made me regret not buying a dozen! This place is an absolute food gem and I look forward to making excuses to come out this way (it's a gorgeous drive from Toronto) so we can eat here again! read more

Great place to grab Breakfast in cottage country when you don't feel like making it yourself. Everything is homemade and good - try their schnitzel. Fantastic butter tarts and other baked items. Not many places in this area - so pickings are slim so this is a good place family run and the chef is Swiss (hence the name). Open during winter too for snowmobilers. Summer fruit pies are excellent (note: they go fast though). read more
