It seems an opinion of a hair salon is way too objective for a public review, but the home page asked for it. Like a lot of the reviews, I purchased a Groupon for a great deal on just a condition and cut. Nothing fancy. I dye out of a box like a normal person, thanks. The real disclaimer here is that I haven't had my hair cut in a "salon" in over five years. What? How? My hair is an entity all its own: curly, crazy thick, and oh-geez-how-is-there-this-much-of-it kind of deal. Letting Sarah know this beforehand, she didn't seem miffed about it at all. In fact, I was her last of the night (around 6:30) and she kept apologizing for keeping me waiting for literally under ten minutes when they were crazy busy. Too nice. The salon itself is SMALL. There's a tiny waiting area with clothes for sale for some reason and the owners dogs, Zen and Koana, some moppy, long haired shih tzus, that really wanted no part of the friendship I offered. The rest of it--bathroom, four or five chairs, three sinks--was nice. Clean, a little sterile. Everyone was polite. The only thing that seemed odd was no one acknowledges you without you speaking first. Even the owner didn't so much as go further than a glance towards me waiting. Kind of weird. The cut was done well, simple and quick, exactly what I was looking for. Sometimes it's difficult to get what I want. No big changes here. No more than a few inches off (SHE DIDN'T CUT TOO MUCH OFF! MIRACLES). Like I said, I think an opinion of someone's style of .. styling is too personal for me to recommend. Regardless, I can say Sarah was awesome. Chatted without too much chat, you know? Listened, changed what I asked to be changed without being offended. Overall, I kind of want to try somewhere else next time as I've been out of the hair circuit for a while, but I would return. I got a pedicure here in the last week of my pregnancy when I could barely see my feet. It lasted beautifully through that last week and then the following month when I had zero time or energy to spend on personal care. A Brazilian wax on Groupon brought me and a friend to a salon in Bethel Park. Marissa was the Esthetician and made our experience a really great one! The procedure is quite uncomfortable, to say the least, but Marissa talked with me the whole time about school, work, relationships, etc. We were even talking about some intimate details of our lives even though we barely knew each other. But once you're bearing it all to see you kind of hit a new level of intimacy with someone upon meeting them. Afterwards I had no ingrown hairs and the wax lasted a good six weeks. I just went to Sybil on a whim because I had a groupon for a full highlight and haircut and I was in desperate need of a haircut and color freshening. I was able to schedule an appointment for a week out, which was pleasantly surprising. They do have some evening hours as well, which is nice, and they are open on Saturdays. My appointment was with Sarah, and she is phenomenal. She was very kind, and very experienced. I explained what I was looking for, and she immediately got to work. The whole experience was wonderful. The salon is relaxed and inviting, and the staff is very friendly. They also have a spa, and Sarah does nail care as well. I booked another hair appointment for 8 weeks out, and will definitely look into the nail care options as well. I can't say enough about my hair. It is so smooth and shiny, and the cut is absolutely perfect, as is the color. I can't say enough good things about Sybil! And definitely ask for Sarah. read more

I went with a Groupon and added an all over color. They treated me like I was paying full price (because I know that doesn't always happen!) They accepted me early, did a whole consultation and I had a great experience! The color was exactly what I wanted and the highlights were very, very well done! Not streaky and chunky. Sarah fixed my botched cut from another salon and it is incredible! The salon is clean and stylish. The staff was very professional, respectful and experienced. Offered tea and made me comfortable. I plan on using the Spa services they offer too. I have finally (after a whole year) found a salon I'll be going back to on a regular basis! read more

After moving back from LA, it's been incredibly difficult to find both an affordable and acceptable brazillian waxer. So I tried out Sybil because they were on the only one's that I thought a somewhat reasonable price, starting around 60. The first time I was really disappointed because there was a ton of breakage and it felt like really painful way to get a trim. But to the salon's credit, they fixed it a week later on the house and I was much more satisfied. I'm planning on trying them again, because they are very conveniently located and it was a very quick, cheap(er) and mostly painless waxing experience. read more

I had Cassandra, one of Sybil's stylists come onsite to do my hair and makeup at the Wyndham Grand in Pittsburgh several weeks ago. Cassandra was prompt and professional while still making the experience lighthearted and fun. I was nervous, as I was being honored at a gala that evening, I know it was evident. Cassandra took the time to discuss everything and helped me to tweak the look I had in mind so that it would look best on me, which calmed my nerves immensely. One of my biggest fears was looking in the mirror halfway through the event and seeing that my hair had fallen and my makeup had worn off. I can say without hesitation, that I looked just as fresh at the end of the evening as I did when walked out of my hotel room moments after she finished. My makeup and hair were perfect. I cannot recommend Cassandra enough. I would hire her again in a heartbeat. read more

I purchased the Groupon for haircut, shampoo, deep conditioning treatment, and style. When I called to make the appointment, I had some trouble. The first time I called I was transferred from to 3 people in order to find someone who could help me set up an appointment. I ended up being put on hold, and after 15 minutes I hung up because it was clear I had been forgotten. When I called back 5 minutes later, the person answered with a simple "hello" and was confused when I asked whether I had reached Sybil Salon and whether I could make an appointment. I wasn't impressed with the professionalism at this point, but I ended up making an appointment with Sarah. Overall, I was pleased with Sarah's consultation and haircut. I'm probably a tough client in that I rely on the stylist for lots of advice about what cut and style would look best on me. Sarah was patient and professional. She was pleasant and made an appropriate amount of conversation. I was very pleased with my haircut! The "deep conditioning treatment" is probably added to appeal to Groupon customers, because it didn't seem different from using conditioner at home. It's a nice touch, but I would never pay extra for that normally. When I went to check out at the end of my haircut, I asked for the normal amount that the services would be if I didn't have a Groupon and the receptionist told me $60. I tipped accordingly, but I was a little annoyed that when I got home I checked Groupon again and it said the original value was $52. Not a huge deal, but I was taken aback by how expensive it would've been for the simple services I received. Bottom line: Great haircut, but not worth the expensive price if you're on a budget. read more

terrible experience; i should listen other people reading their reviews. Tried to schedule apt with Groupon, only one person accept it, but it is ok, many places do it. Place called me 3 times to cancel and reschedule it! Second time i try to ask if anyone also able to take me with Groupon since it is their specialist who is canceling my visits. The respond was short " No!", tried to connect to supervisor regarding this matter, the lady on the phone said there is no supervisor here :-) it is hard to get a time working full time RN and having 2 kids to fit the only one available hairdressers schedule but i tried.... It was so obvious that i was not "'valuable customer" ... Finally, i called Groupon and was able to return my money back and i also reported this place, that they will be no business with them in the future! read more

I intially was pretty disappointed. I walked in and my lady was "late" for an unknown amount of time. I was okay with it, but I felt unwelcomed to sit there and wait. They kind of wanted me to wait somewhere else but I really didnt want to. They were pretty unfriendly when I walked in,no one really acknowledged me. Twenty minutes later, my hairdresser came and it was because she was busy with someone else. So, I was worried about my street parking given this delay but I didn't want to run back to add more money. Anyways I had a Groupon for haircut and partial highlights. I get there and my hairdresser tells me it'll be an additional $40 because my hair was so dark and she needed to highlight/bleach and glaze. I've gotten this done twice before and I had never heard of 2 steps needed for color. Anyways, it was the only way she was going to do my hair so I had to say yes. I went to use the bathroom and the 2 unfriendliest dogs I have ever met poop was literally on the ground. I almost stepped in it. I was disgusted and everyone was so unfriendly ESPECIALLY who seemed to be the owner that I did not tell anyone. The place is pretty tiny, the hairdressers are on top of each other, the dogs are shi**ing in the public bathroom, and the owner is basically as cold as they get. All of that aside, my hair turned out great! I really love my cut and color, it was pretty much exactly what I wanted. So if you're okay with forgiving the rest this place is great. I believe it's overpriced for the incidents I ran into so I'm not sure if I would go back. I enjoy a more friendly environment I honestly couldn't wait to get the hell out of there! read more

Bad business practices and rude owner. I got a Groupon and came to the salon. I had been here once in 2010 when I was a student. Didn't read the fine print. Ok but again was here 6 years ago. Started the highlights and the stylist immediately told me that it would be an extra $40 for toner. I agreed to that. Then she told me that I couldn't use my coupon and wanted to charge me $145. I just paid for the highlights and left. Come in at your own risk and be prepared to pay up. read more

I've been going to Michael for a while now. And every time I walk into Sybil Salon it's like walking into an old friends home. Will get to Michael soon, but the salon itself is welcoming, spacious, and tastefully decorated. They always go the extra mile whether offering something to drink, hanging up your coat for you, or hand selecting some magazines for you to read. Michael himself is exceptional. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. He is professional, always accommodating, on time and overall does a fantastic job. read more

I decided to wait awhile before writing a review about my experience. I felt really angry and disappointed with my hair initially, and two weeks later though I have gained a little perspective am still never returning to this salon, and would not recommend it. I purchased a Groupon for a cut and full highlights package, made an appointment, and went in with high hopes. I showed my stylist pictures of exactly what I wanted- one picture showing the haircut, and one the color. We discussed what would be an appropriate shade for my highlights, and she convinced me that I would look better with gold highlights than the coppery ones I was initially interested in. I agreed, and off we went. My highlights took a very long time to bleach out. My stylist brought me magazines as the minutes stretched out to over an hour, which was nice of her. Finally she said, "Well, this is as light as we're going to get it" and led me to the sink. Long story short, I did not end up with gold highlights, but a dry, dirty straw-orange color. She proceeded to cut my hair, but absolutely ignored what we had talked about when looking at the reference photo and pretty much did whatever she wanted. When I asked her about the layering I wanted near my face, she said she wasn't keen on doing that because it would round out the shape of my hair. The thing is, that is exactly what I was going for, and clearly the look that the photo depicted! I have a long face, and a little volume and shape along the sides of my head takes away from the length. I have learned this from past haircuts. My cut now is exactly the same as my last haircut that I had gotten at Aveda in Squirrel Hill- which I had told her I had hated. This whole experience was pretty upsetting. My hair does not look awful, which is why I am giving this whole kerfluffle 2 stars instead on one, but it definitely was not what I wanted. I am planning on going back to Dean of Shadyside- the only place in Pittsburgh where I have had my hair cut and not ended up in tears afterwards. read more

Michael Locke is exceptional! This is my FIRST yelp review ever but I've had such a great experience with him I felt I should leave a rating/comment. He has cut and colored my hair for over 1.5 years and each time he does an exceptional job. He is extremely professional, fun and always timely. My work schedule often precludes day time appointments and he's always been extremely flexible in fitting me in evenings and weekends. I purchased their Groupon and went for the first time and had Sandor. Everyone was nice enough there but everything was just ok. FYI the owner has dogs that she let's roam around which is fine me but I felt like could be a problem for others. My stylist was medium friendly which again was fine by me and he did a good shampoo and hair mask with minimal hair massage. He was super quick when it came to my hair cut which was basically trimming long hair to get rid of the split ends and then bringing back my side bangs. I told him I wear my hair straight and to do anything to make it less heavy. When it was done it looked fine but by time I got home I was very unhappy. First of all he cut my bangs straight across which is a no go for side bangs and he didn't taper them at all so they just awkwardly end. There were also random long pieces of hair in my bangs that I had to trim myself. He barely layered my hair so it all ends and poofs out. To make a long story short I will be going to another salon to get my hair fixed. read more

I told Cassandra after she finished that "this is the best my hair has literally ever looked" and it was definitely true. I bought the groupon for wash/cut/full highlights and Cassandra went above and beyond (especially because I never have any idea of what to do with my hair). She was really kind about my nervousness to cut my hair 'too short' (after a really traumatic bowl cut when I was seven that I never got over) and suggested an ombré effect instead of full-length highlights to accommodate my inability to get to a salon very often. The rest of the staff was also very welcoming and I accidentally went on customer appreciation day, so there were homemade cookies. My hair looks and feels awesome and I'm full of cookies. I was new to the Pittsburgh area and in search of a new hairstylist. I purchased a groupon from Sybil Salon, mostly because it was the closest salon to my apartment. I scheduled an appointment with Cassandra and was blown away by her professionalism, expertise, talent, and friendliness. I had gone in with an idea of what I wanted, but she also had some suggestions based on my hair type/color, and facial features. I decided to trust her and the cut and color she gave me was nothing like I had ever had. I was obsessed and got so many compliments. I go back religiously every 6 weeks-something I have never done before. Cassandra is fun to be around and keeps my hair looking on point. ;) everyone else in the salon is friendly and accommodating. I always feel welcome and comfortable. I know a few other people who have been there for haircuts and have seen people other than Cassandra and they have all good things to say. I bought a groupon for a partial highlight, cut and deep conditioning treatment. It was easy to make an appointment, and when I got there it seemed like a cute little place. The stylist was very nice and professional and told me she would make sure that she did my highlights in a way that when I put my hair up, it would look nice and bright that way too. When she finished highlighting I remember being surprised she was finished since there was still a decent chunk of hair in front that she hadn't touched but I decided not to say anything and trust she knew what she was doing. When it came time for the deep conditioning treatment, it was more just like a regular conditioner. When I hear "treatment" I think of something that sits in your hair for a while and is more potent than just basic conditioner, but this was not that. With a groupon it's always a gamble but I wish people wouldn't exaggerate about what they're offering. Anyway, when I got home and attempted to pull my hair back in a pony just to see what it would look like, I could tell that she hadn't actually made sure to pull them through so that it would look good that way too. Then after only a week or so I noticed I had pretty noticeable roots (and no, my hair does not grow super fast..quite the opposite!) The color itself was fine and bright but had to take stars off for not highlighting close enough to the root or putting enough highlights in key areas that partials are supposed to cover, and also for the lack of a true deep conditioning treatment. Was ok for a groupon, but would not pay full price here, especially since now I have to go back for my next highlight appointment sooner than I normally would. read more

The highlights are awful, the worst I've ever gotten. I specifically asked for natural looking highlights and ones that wouldn't look weird growing out. Well, they look too light for my brown hair, streaky, not natural at all. I can already tell you what they will look like growing out because the stylist didn't even go to my roots - yes, it looks like I got this done months ago and need a touch up already. ALSO there is a spot on the top of my head that has a vertical stripe running across it, where is it even lighter than the rest of the highlights! It looks like an amateur did it, except the cost was not amateur cost. What really gets me is when I called back to talk about it with the salon, they were completely unapologetic and said I could come in and pay for more services to be done to try to fix the problem. No way. I will never return. I've gotten highlights done so many times and this is hands down my worst experience. I HATE MY HAIR NOW. My finace got me a gift certificate for my birthday, which was on the 2nd, for the intentions of a 90 minute massage and a pedicure on December 8th (on the certificate it says the date he bought it). On the website, massages are listed as STILL available as services that are offered. I called the salon to find out that massages are no longer offered. I wanted to go to Sybil because of the rave reviews I saw online. I am unable to have facials, and he bought me the certificate because I specifically said i wanted a massage. The gentleman who answered the phone was extremely rude to my fiance' when he called to try to figure out what was going on, and is requesting his money back for false advertisement. He was only trying to get me a gift that I wanted and spent a lot of money on the gift certificate only because of false advertisement. The gentleman on the phone said they have been in the process of taking the massage section out of the website, I'm sorry I work on my website for my business and it doesn't take a month. Hopefully they will call us back and are more understanding and nicer to him. Glad I will be able to go somewhere else where people treat their customers well. read more
