I've been going to Eddy for years. In fact I am his first paying client. I have followed him from different salons and was so happy when he landed at Salon Cercone. I believe he's been there 8 years or so now. It's a perfect fit for him as a stylist and me as a client. Eddy is a true artist in his craft. I have had every colour, cut and style and then some. Anything Eddy or I could think up over the years, I've worn it. Over twenty years later and I still get compliments from complete strangers on my look. I owe it all to Eddy! The atmosphere is upscale but not stuffy. The staff are a knowledgeable group of extremely talented hair, skin and nail artists. It has an antiquated decor that grates on the senses, the most surly and unpleasant receptionist that loves to be rude to customers and staff alike. And a passive aggressive owner that will give attitude if you talk to him. Don't except to be offered coffee, or water. I went for one reason, stylist Micheal. When he left, there is no reason to pay money for such a unpleasant experience. Save the cash. I want to love this place and have tried it several times but I continually get frustrated coming here. Kim does a great job cutting hair but often cares more about talking to her coworkers than serving the client. This is the second time where I've waited over 20 minutes to be greeted at the salon because the employees are all talking to each other, which has then delayed my appt and made the haircut last well over an hour. I have a family and it's hard for me to find time to get out; to be treated like I'm not waiting so they can talk to each other is extremely frustrating. The price is reasonable, the quality is good, the service is lacking. I'd rather pay more and be treated with respect for my appt time. read more

I have a 2C/3A head and he listened to my complaints regarding former stylists complaints (I'm looking at you Kelly Elaine -- my head was butchered, FYI) and knocked a collar length bob outta' the park in under an hour. Free up some weight to let my ringlets pop, no haystack profile, and falls EXACTLY where I wanted it to -- so the man understands shrinking curl. Ok, I love this place and I love Eddy! I have found my salon/stylist for as long as they'll have me. After being shell-shocked for over a year from that horrible Supercuts experience I put off cutting my hair for almost a year. And after scoping out my hood, I found Salon Cercone on Ellsworth. Eddy specializes in cutting crazy wavy/curly hair so I'd recommend him for that alone. But also his process: First he explains to you exactly what he's going to do and really listens to everything you want and don't want. And then, he does not make you feel like a dumb bitch for going so long without a haircut instead he empathizes about stupid stylists who don't listen. And THEN he gives you a fabulous haircut and shapes your eyebrows to perfection, and for a really reasonable price, $45 +tip. read more

I have mixed feelings about Salon Cercone. On one hand, Eddy does wonderful work with curly and wavy hair - the main reason I switched stylists and found him. On the other hand, after being a client for over a year, he suddenly didn't show up for an appointment. I waited for 20 minutes then finally had to leave as my lunch break was ending. The receptionist didn't apologize at the time but kept saying, "I don't know why he's late" though I saw him talk to Eddy on the phone. No one ever apologized or gave a legitimate reason (things happen!). I'm a reasonable person, but I haven't gone back. This breaks my heart because he's such a wonderful guy who does great work, but if I can't rely on a stylist to show up, that's a deal breaker. Also, when I was bleached platinum, I was going in to see Joel for root touch-ups. I told him the first time around that I used toner to create a white-blonde look, yet he didn't use a toner on me saying I didn't need one. After a couple of months, I noticed that the areas he bleached were definitely more brassy than the rest of my hair and no matter what I did, I couldn't tone down the brassiness...so I had to go darker all over. Later, he saw me in the salon with darker hair and asked why. When I explained the situation, he claimed that I'd never mentioned toner. Oy. read more

I have been getting my hair cut by Gary for two years, and more recently had highlights done as well. It can be difficult to find stylists who know what they're doing with curly hair, but Gary clearly does. I always leave very happy with how my hair looks. I have gotten DevaCurl cuts before and would say his skills are comparable, though he has a different method and does cut curls wet. My highlights came out perfectly as well, people typically think they're natural and are surprised to learn otherwise. He's also a genuinely good guy and I always enjoy talking to him when I go in. Eddy was absolutely wonderful. I'm Asian and I have very thick, coarse, wavy hair and I've always been apprehensive about going to a non-Asian stylist. Fortunately, I'm happy to say that Eddy knew exactly what he was doing with my hair! I used to get my hair permanently straightened and wanted to switch to my natural hair. I was at a point where I had grown most of it out, but still had large chunks of straight hair in my outer layers. I have finally found my curly hair stylist! After reading reviews, checking out places and figuring out for myself that not everyone must know how to cut curls, but wavy hair, I found that Eddy is a great stylist for me! We got to talk and he treated me like we've know each other for ever. Gave me tips, told me about having his long curly days days. And after only (what it seemed like) 5 clips, I was done. I wanted to let my hair dry naturally, so when I got home my hair was set, it look sensational! At first I thought the salon itself is small. I wished it was a little larger; more intimate. I saw Eddy for a woman's hair cut. I have thick, long, wavy hair, I had not gotten a professional cut in 1 1/2 years, and the last time I saw somebody who knew how to handle curls was YEARS ago. Anyways, Eddy is incredibly friendly and sweet. He sat down and took a moment to discuss what I wanted from him. I got a little worried because he washed my hair and combed it out before cutting it. Usually you hear that curly hair should only be cut dry. But, he did a wonderful job. My curls are all healthy and happy again, and the little layering he did lets more curls show, and honestly is more flattering for my face and head than just an even cut all the way around. Eddy used to have long hair himself, which is how he learned how to handle curly hair himself. He's been cutting curls for 20 years, and still cuts the hair of clients who he met in clubs when he had his long curls. He will talk products and technique with you, and take his time. The salon is clean, comfortable, and cute. The staff are very polite and kind, I was a little late because of the buses, but they didn't express any irritation and eased my embarrassment. Also, this place is affordable. A student discount meant my cut was only $36! read more

I got my hair done by Eddie. He cut my sister's hair and did a really nice job. She has very curly hair and he promised his cut would make her hair curl even nicer. Her hair did as he said although it was shorter than she wanted. I went to Eddie looking forward to a great experience. I met Eddie the day my sister was there and mentioned I wanted to chop my hair off. My hair was long, it fell over halfway down my back. I no longer wanted to chop my hair, in fact I went to the appointment wanting choppy bangs like Selena Gomez and my hair the same length but styled with layers and thinned out. I showed up on time and had to wait over 20 minutes before Eddie was ready for me. He talked the whole time and didn't even ask me if I still wanted to go short. he didn't ask me what I wanted to do with my hair at all. I thought he was still combing my hair and I was patiently waiting to get a word in when he took the scissors to my hair at shoulder length. he simply went off our last interaction, he didn't ask me if that was still what I had in mind. I am always super weary about going to a new place to get my haircut, as I have had many a bad experience. I have wavy/loosely curly hair that I like to keep cut short, and that combination seems to be lethal for many stylists. I found a recommendation for Eddy on the internet as a curly hair specialist, and I started going a year ago and am so glad I did! He has never given me a bad cut, and even gave me an awesome 'more experimental' style that I had been waiting to try. I'm moving away from Pittsburgh and I wish I could take Eddy with me! Eddy was recommended to me by a friend since I have curly hair. Pretty much my entire life I'd never done anything with my hair except trim it (cut-wise, I dyed it for a long time), but I decided it was time for a change. I decided to go with a dramatic look and I was very nervous (not sure how well I hid it) but Eddy was super nice and I calmed down quickly after we started chatting. And WOW, he did an absolutely fantastic job! He cut it perfectly to enhance my curls and did everything exactly as I asked (I've had trouble before with stylists ignoring my instructions about cutting my bangs or being too timid about cutting off damage). This is, without a doubt, the best haircut I've ever had. (Though that may change since I'm planning to go back to him later to try more styles!) I recently moved to the area and was looking for a new salon that had a lot of experience cutting curly hair. Michael cut my hair and I absolutely love it! He listened to my concerns and the adjustments that I wanted to make to my cut and did a fantastic job! He was very friendly, interesting and easy to talk to, efficient but thorough. I've been going to Kim for a few years now. She is a genius with color and also really intuitive with how to cut your hair to take advantage of what you've got (how to cut so that your own little waves or cowlicks or whatever work with the hairstyle instead of against it). I have very fine, almost straight hair (basically it's straight with a few little waves here and there), and she's great with it. I know three other people who go to Kim and their hair looks great. The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is that sometimes it's a little hard to get in touch with them (leaving voicemails instead of talking to a person, can take a while for them to call back) and my haircut rarely starts at the actual time it's scheduled. It might start 10 minutes or more later or whatever, because the vibe is just more laid back. Just something to keep in mind when you're scheduling--don't bet on a quick in-and-out on your lunch hour, because while that's maybe possible, it's definitely not guaranteed. read more

found this place via yelp and was drawn to the lower-than-average prices (my haircut was $45 before tip) plus their expertise with curly hair. i could not be happier! my stylist was michael, and he was so friendly and funny and made me feel very comfortable. i had medium long hair falling around the top of my bust and i wanted to go much shorter. michael told me to be safe we would cut it around shoulder length, and if i changed my mind and wanted it shorter (or if i wasnt happy with the cut for any other reason) i had a week long grace period where i could come back and he would cut it again to my liking for free. he told me if he was booked up he would fit me in at the beginning or end of the day. WOW. i have never had a stylist offer me this before, and lo and behold, he was right and i'm so glad we didn't go shorter!! throughout the cut he was telling me what he was doing and how he was cutting my hair, so that in case i went to another stylist that wasn't him i could let them know what to do. michael gave me a great cut, did not try to sell me anything beyond what i was there for, and as per my request, he didn't blow it out or overstyle it (i hate leaving a salon with a new haircut full of gel and with straight hair or something... i want to know what my new hair ACTUALLY looks like!) and when my hair dries after a shower it looks exactly like it did when i walked out of salon cercone. i have finally found a salon in pittsburgh that i like, and i will never go anywhere else! (other perks/tips: - plenty of street parking - i had no problem finding parking at 8:45 am on saturday morning, but it would probably be much harder if it were later in the day. also tons of bus stations around, so getting too and from shouldn't be difficult! - i called on wednesday and the first available appt was the 9am with michael on saturday, so i guess they get fairly busy, but not excessively so like some other salons. the girl i spoke to on the phone was also very nice.) - i'm told that one of the other stylists, eddy, gives student discounts!!) read more

I have thin wavy-curly hair. It's hard to make it look good - not enough layering, and the weight of the hair makes it look thin and flat; too much layering, and it looks like an 80s cut. I've seen both Eddy and Gary and they've both done a fantastic job with it. I've kept going back to see Eddy because he charges a little less than Gary, but they're both amazing. The student discount is wonderful too. Eddy really loves people; he's super friendly, and he remembers little details about me from visit to visit. Lovely guy. I booked an appointment with Michael because reviews suggested that he can cut wavy/curly hair well. Sadly, his haircut ranks in the bottom two worst that I have ever gotten. The biggest issue was that he didn't listen. I asked to keep the length and remove some of the weight. He was having so much fun cutting that he goes: "I'm just going to cut another inch." Before I had time to scream "no," he'd made the first snip. There goes a few more months waiting for my hair to grow out. And, none of the weight was gone, again because he didn't listen when I mentioned what other stylists had done to achieve the right effect. I just seemed frizzier when it was all said and done. I'm a bit over a month out now. I hated the haircut the day of, the next day, and a week out. And, I still hate it. Again, I'm stuck waiting until my hair grows out again so that I can get someone who has the skill necessary to cut my hair, along with the ability to listen to clients. I'll note that Michael kept saying that he would fix the cut free of charge if I hated it after a week. But, that only is helpful when you can trust that the stylist will listen. Otherwise, you are going in risking an even worse outcome. I clearly won't be returning. read more
