Sycamore had so much potential. It has the making of a quality farm to table restaurant where you would expect delicious food. Most of the food is locally sourced, but wow, so so so bland! I tried the potato leek soup which absolutely boring. I really needed to add a lot of salt and pepper to give it some flavor. The BLT was pretty good though, so that was a redeeming quality. (Bacon was super yummy!) Go ahead and order that. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich? Skip that. Again, bland as all get out, just a bunch of hot sauce on chicken. Food was really really great, as shown in the picture, and mouth watering goodness. A definite must have drink also. Finished the meal off with a delicious cobble and ice cream. A great recommendation by the server on the pork chop and dessert. It is on the more expensive side so be prepared unless you make it before the happy hour ends. Went there last night for some cocktails and dinner. The inside was super cute, and I really liked the early 1900's tile floor. There was some sort of drain or sewer smell or something in the restaurant that I couldn't quite put my finger on. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it was noticeable. We ordered the Rose Garden to drink - which I thought was fruity and refreshing summer drink. The gnocchi was fine enough but lacked any kind of real punch to make it memorable. The only real distinct punchy flavor to the dish was basil - and basil does not a memory make. My dining companion ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, and asked for ranch and was told they don't have it - I understand if you don't want to offer it on your menu, but at least have it as a standby for those who do want it. A Nashville hot chicken sandwich ought to have something to cool the heat - such as buttermilk ranch. My other dining companion ordered a sandwich and fries. The house-made ketchup was reminiscent of cocktail sauce - and I just found it to be weird. I've been in plenty of nice restaurants where they served both ranch and Heinz ketchup, and they didn't lack on quality. My recommendation would be to quit trying to be fancy, and just focus on great food that people want to eat. I'd go back again if someone else wanted to go, but I wasn't overly impressed with this place. read more

Visiting como to see friends and was rec to come here. Sooo glad I did! Everything I got was great!! Their pork belly sliders were deliciously crisped with a delightful sweet glaze covering the meat! The gnocchi was soft, in a mild cream sauce. Needed a bit extra salting but otherwise, zero regrets. Their mussels were way beyond the price I paid. Large serving!! The lemon, garlic stew they cooked the mussels in was pooled on the plate. Perfect for soaking up with a wonderful bread which was served in abundance! I also got the tangled octopus which was a run cocktail with pomegranate and something else tasty. It was so good I got twice to make sure it wasn't just made up. Always had great service. The gnocchi with butternut squash is seasonal, but so worth it when it is on the menu.

I ordered the short ribs, which were decadent. They were extremely tender, and the broth was outstanding. It came with a side of mashed potatoes which were creamy and smooth. I wouldn't say it was a generous portion, you may want to get an appetizer to go with. We also tried the Sangria, which was good. We had a party of eight and there was only one other couple in the building, but I didn't feel like the server was very engaged, and when we asked for something it took a bit to get it. It also took nearly an hour to get our food. It is pretty pricey. I forgot a photo, but it was very pleasing in appearance. read more

Went to school here from 10-15, never once went Sycamore. I totally regret it now, having finally tried it in late 2021. I took my now fiancé on a date here and it was wonderful. The atmosphere is a little more reserved? Definitely much quieter than other joints around town. Both of our dishes were excellent and the perfect amount of food. read more

I went in with high hopes and came out with hurt feelings. I was excited to try this place with my wife and daughters. I'd heard good things and in passing it always looked like it had the right stuff. Almost gave off a New York vibe. Unfortunately, the stuff was not right at all. Our server, Daisy, completely lacked professional demeanor and could not stay on point with our table. After ordering my drink twice and waiting for fifteen minutes I finally took matters into my own hands and went to the bar. Kat made quick work of the drink order and noticing I came from the dining room, apologized for the inconvenience. I mentally hit the reset button and went back to sit with my family. This was meant to be a nice evening after all. Settled in with my cocktail our server returned from the wilderness and proceeded to give us the bum's rush as we ordered our appetizers. Suggesting that we place our entrees with our appetizers as it was about to get extremely busy and she expected the kitchen might be overwhelmed soon. This was just before eight o'clock and for the record, neither Daisy or Sycamore was terribly busy. Nor would they get any busier. Also for the record, they were open until 11:00 so I didn't feel as though our visit should have been inconveniencing anyone. Methinks perhaps Daisy had a hot date and wanted outta there. To the credit of the manager, she did stop by the table to check on us evidently having heard about the drink debacle. My wife took charge saying "We're fine, everything is okay. We don't want to be any trouble". Now, if it were me I would have taken this for the grace it was intended to give however for our server, it was evidently insulting because now the service really went to hell. We were virtually ignored by all but a nervous busboy who did well to keep our glasses of water brimming while we waited for our entrees...and waited...and waited. Good thing we placed those with our appetizers otherwise who knows when they may have arrived. When we did finally get our entrees, at a table which lacked silverware at this point, all were pleased except me. I'm a big fan of a great pork chop. This one was not great. In fact, to my dismay, it was prepared unevenly and proved to be quite pink in the middle. I'm all in favor of not overcooking pork but I draw the line at having a potential for trichinosis. This was my moment of surrender. I know when I'm beaten. As my wife and daughters shared a creme brulee our server brought the check, suddenly very much on point. I laid down my credit card to pay upon which...and this is amazing...our server, in a snotty tone, simply said "yea" and walked away. This shocked even my wife who is so nice she has a June Cleaver air about her. All she could utter was "oh wow". I paid the tab, including a nice tip for Daisy, and escaped this pit of negativity and poorly prepared pork. The pork sandwich was really good, the Cuban sandwich was also really good. Passing through Columbia with a tour group, that dumped us out in downtown area where all the restaurants are to adventure on our own. Overwhelmed with choices, I stopped a young couple on the sidewalk and ask for some recommendations, Sycamore sounded just the ticket for a foodie like myself. Wozer, they delivered for sure. Waiter was a young man named Matt, who not only served well, but also made a lunch recommendation that was yum x 5. On a cross country trip and stopped here Jan 26, 2014. Great table bread served with sun dried tomato butter. Blue martini excellent with handmade blue cheese stuffed olives and Boodles Gin We got the beet salad which was yummy and the special salad with romaine, bacon and thinly sliced radishes, buttermilk dressing a perfectly warm soft soft boiled egg and croutons it reminded me of a variation of a deconstructed BLT with egg. Small plates: Pork belly sliders Fried Oysters with a heavenly lemon spiced dipping sauce. Parmasan fries with truffle oil Duck wings with a slaw and blue cheese chunks, Trout bellies with pickled red onions and a delicious cream horseradish sauce and toast crisps. I rarely get dessert but I had to try it at this place. A flour-less chocolate cake and mascarpone cheesecake with ginger snap crust...damn good. Sycamore is more upscale than casual dining so you'd expect a great experience. The food was good, but service disappointing at many levels. We were seated at the front of the restaurant by the big windows, however it felt like the warmth and vibe and energy is all at the back. It was as if that front corridor is sort of forgotten. They didn't have ginger beer for a Moscow mule so we had to get something else. Got the butternut squash gnocchi for an app. It was ok. Fairly flat and unimpressive. The thyme was a nice taste bud flair, however it was as if the butternut squash sauce was poured on top with some garnish. I could do that at home. The flavors didn't meld together. I asked the gentleman next to me if his $35.00 cioppino was good as that's what I wanted, he said it was "ok" and gave me a look, like "don't get it." Needless to say I didn't. We waited a very long time for the main course. When it arrived the braised short ribs came out cold, so they took those orders back and although we had to wait a while longer they came back out hot, and very good. My favorite item however was the Chris J Chicken sandwich. The focaccia it comes on was fresh. It's got a spicy sauce, and aioli that perfectly compliment each other. That was the highlight of the evening. Server was not real friendly, answered questions with quick short responses (asked what she recommended and literally just rattled through all the main courses with no additional info, not helpful) never introduced herself, did not offer suggestions unless asked, and we had to wait for refills on tea and water. Last thing, it is really loud. Normally that wouldn't bother me but the acoustics of the building are such that it would be difficult to have a quiet conversation. The bill would have been $230 for four but they gave us a nice discount for the cold meals, which was kind. Still, for that price point and it being an upscale restaurant I can't recommend it for dinner. Go at lunch, get the chicken sandwich and the value will be more on par. read more

The one we had tasted like wine with orange juice...just really poorly executed but their other crafted cocktails are significantly better. the food isn't that great but the appetizers are better than the entrees. We enjoyed the habanero cheese curds and the grilled cheese sandwich. We had the 16 oz pork chop which lacked flavor and was a bit over cooked but edible. The wedge salad was lacking an adequate amount of dressing, and the blue cheese used did not have pungent aroma or sharp flavor I look for in a good blue cheese. I came here on a Friday night and it was only so-so. But then, I stumbled on it one afternoon while happy hour (2-5) was going on. It might be one of my favorite happy hours in the city. The appetizers that are on sale are second to none; they are large and quality. Add the decently priced one-of-a-kind cocktails, I have my lunch/dinner for the day.
