I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Sylvie's today, contrary to what many of the reviews here say. I came to Sylvie's for a Brazillian wax. I've gotten several Brazillians before from a variety of locations. I have moved a lot, so I am always looking for new places to go. I chose Sylvie's because of its proximity to my home and availability. Unlike other people have said, it is SO easy to get to, and I was able to make a same day appointment! I am leaving for a trip tomorrow and it was important for me to get this service done today. I called Sylvie and she answered and was incredibly accommodating and able to schedule me in for that afternoon. Sylvie's is right off of 12 Mile Road, and the address is clearly labeled on the unit. I found the place with no problem, and was able to walk right in. I was 15 minutes early to my appointment, and she made me feel comfortable as I waited. The room was very clean and very professional. I am shocked to read reviews about Sylvie's negative personality because I did not get that feeling AT ALL. She made me feel very warm and welcome, while maintaining a professional front. While she did the service, we chatted and I found it very interesting to learn about her heritage. She did a fantastic job with the wax and paid attention to detail. I really don't understand all of the negative reviews. I am very happy with the result of my Brazillian wax. Like I said, I have gotten many waxes before from many places and Sylvie's ranks at the top of my list. I look forward to visiting Sylvie's again when I am back in town because she really did an incredible job. I would have no hesitation recommending her to everyone I know. It saddens me to read all of these poor reviews about such a wonderful place. As a real customer that attended Sylvie's today, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this place a try, like I did. I as well as the other ladies purchase a groupon for $55 for two Brazilian waxes. I have paid more for one at other spas...so why not? WRONG!!! I'm going to start point by point so bear with me: 1. Location- the spa is located off of a residential street in pretty much an attached garage. Not hard to find but, not my idea of a "day spa". The room itself appeared to be clean, but as mentioned before the paper towels and the sheets was just alarming to me. Like paper towels on you bum at a day spa? Im not pretentious but geez 2. Scheduling- Sigh...ok so if you put yourself out there in the land of Groupon you should be prepared for the boom of business..or at least I would think? Scheduling an appointment with this woman was worse than trying to claw my eyes out. No kidding. She was "booked" all the time even 3-4 weeks in advance, she was so far from accommodating. I finally had to play phone tag with her to schedule both appointments, for my last (which was yesterday) I had to slowly explain to her that people work jobs. I work 9-5, no weekendsI'm free on Saturdays. When does she have time to take my business? She seemed annoyed that I wanted to even come back for my 2nd appointment. Because I don't have time to keep going back and forth. I ended up making a 6:30 PM appointment on a Monday. 3. Bedside Manner- excuse us poor American for not being French, Sylvie is such a French nationalist I wonder why she even is living in the US. But I suppose we are good enough to pay her bills and come to this dreadful day spa. She spoke to me about not wanting a "large" man on top of her, why are American's so fat and closed minded against different foods, oh and why won't Obama alleviate her issues paying her school loans? This woman is a nightmare. Waxing is bad enough but her conversation is even more painful. She is so abrasive and rude. 4. Ambiance- there is none. I can't even begin to comment further. In a nutshell, please don't come to this spa. I beg you, even if the groupon deal is amazing. She is literally a nightmare to deal with. I am not even saying this to be mean, but she has to do better. She abuses her clients and will be going out of business if she doesn't change her ways. read more

I also went here because of Brazilian Groupon. I've always wanted to try one, so Groupon was the way to go. It was difficult to find the house, it's a little off of 12 mile. The room was a bit small, but it seemed pretty clean. I had read other reviews on a different website, so I was keeping an eye out for cleanliness. I assumed the sheet was clean, but the paper towels weirded me out a little. As others have said, conversation is a little tough. She's very opinionated so it makes an actual conversation hard. We talked about languages and my boyfriend. I did take 9 years of French, but when she asked about me speaking it, I didn't feel up to it so I said I couldn't. Which got the same reaction E.M. got. Then I said I moved to Michigan to be with the BF. And her daughter did the same thing, except moved to New York. At that point I thought conversation was going well, then she said she didn't understand why the girls follow the boys. So I tried to explain that the BF's mother passed away last December, so of course I'd move to him instead of him to me so he could stay with his family.... somehow she didn't understand that. And that's when I decided I wouldn't be back. Because in retrospect, that really upset me. Anywho, the waxing was super fast, which I appreciated because it sucked. I mean, getting anything waxed hurts, but damn, it hurt. Of course, I'd never gotten one before, so nothing was used to the wax. And she did use a gentler wax for the more delicate areas, and that was nice. It did take a day or two to for the skin to relax and stop being sore. But I didn't mind that too much. Overall, I'm not going back... I probably wouldn't recommend it unless it was one of my French speaking friends, I think they would appreciate it more. read more

I agree with everything that was said in the other reviews. She is not overly friendly and quite blunt. Personality aside, this was not a great experience. Not terrible, but I will not go back. It's in a residential location and I'm assuming the sheets were clean, but she puts paper towels down on the sheets for your rear end. A bit odd. She does nothing to ease the pain or cover you up like others have done, so don't go here if it's your first wax or you'll never do it again. Not a great wax, but not terrible. I read a few reviews in advance and knew that it was in this lady's house, but my hair stylist is out of her home salon as well, so I thought it could still be fine. Bought a 2-visit Groupon for a Brazilian wax. It was difficult to make an appointment with her; her availability seemed fairly limited. Finally got in for my wax yesterday and was NOT impressed. The house was not well marked, and I wasn't sure where to knock or try to enter. She came to the door and let me in to a very small and very warm back room. I asked if there was a restroom, but she said it was broken, and that she uses the library! This alone makes me concerned about the cleanliness of her establishment; the fact that she then had me lie down on a table (where she may or may not have changed the sheets) on top of a few pieces of paper towel accelerated my concerns. I suppose she did at least work quickly, for which I am thankful, because conversation was torturous. I mentioned something about my boyfriend, but then she complained about how women only ever want to talk about their men. I asked about the different languages she speaks, and she proceeded to use "No offense" in a statement where she basically insulted my ability to speak a language besides English. In general, there were no topics I found that didn't result in her being fairly condescending. Perhaps I am new to the waxing world and this should be ignored, but I have to say that my hair follicles were NOT happy. They were bleeding and irritated immediately afterward, and today look like they are bruised (purplish spots below the skin). I'm also concerned that some of my skin has a minor burn because she applied wax on the same spot twice, because even though she acknowledged that typically it feels hotter when wax is put on a second time, it was still very red and sensitive today, a full 24+ hours later. I don't know if I'm even going to go back for the second waxing. I tried to make an appointment and she said she "might be going away for a few days" so she couldn't do it, and that I would just have to call closer to when I want my appointment. She didn't seem to understand that I wanted to make the appointment right then because the last time I called, I had to wait two weeks until the appointment. Overall, I would not recommend this, and certainly wouldn't pay to go there again. Hell, I'm considering not even going for the second time that I already paid for-- it might be worth losing the money and calling it a lesson learned. read more

As others said, this is not a day spa, it's a small room in her house. She was quite rude, asking if I ever wash my face and telling me that I have poor hygiene when it comes to skincare (I wash my face twice daily and exfoliate regularly). The extractions were extremely painful then she used a strong mask right after that burned. The price was decent but I won't be returning. read more

Yikes! These reviews are AWFUL! I've been going to Sylvie for probably a year and a half now... I'd gone to several local, very spendy high-end salons for my brazillian waxes and had horrible experiences... I found Sylvie online, and yes, while the setup in her home is a bit unconventional, I found her to be much more thorough, gentle and faster than the other spas. She's never been rude to me, in fact, the longer I go to her, the more we feel like old friends. She IS very blunt, but she is also very skilled, and it's the wax treatment that I'm paying for, and I've been extremely happy with the results. It's a more intimate, relaxing environment, in my opinion, and I find it to be a nice change from what I've been accustomed to. I like Sylvie very much - she's a very interesting lady, and I think her feistiness is refreshing. I would definitely recommend giving her a chance. read more

I went to Sylvie's Day Spa for a Brazilian Wax through a Groupon special. Unfortunately, she was extremely rude and confrontational over the phone and in person. Her presentation/bedside manner was so nasty I told her I didn't want the service anymore. She mentioned something about "I called her, she didn't call me" and "I'm not your mother," and that did it for me. She proceeded to say "F-you" when I told her about herself and I was to going to write a negative review about her. This lady was pressing her luck because I don' scare easily so I checked her and told her you can't make money being rude to customers and walked out of her little mini-garage spa. Of course, she wanted the Groupon and I told her to wait on it in so many words. She said "Well, I have your number." Yeah right, lady I'll be waiting on your call. Her so-called "day spa" is on the side of her house, like a little cramped attic room. She doesn't change the table, she puts paper towel down on the table. A little weird and questionably unsanitary. Unfortunately, I didn't get the service because her attitude was too nasty to endure an already uncomfortable experience from her cussing at me to her poor verbal skills. Save your money, save your dignity and go somewhere else and pay a little extra for better service. Who cares about her expertise when she's rude as hell? **Update after my appointment** I am pleased to say that I enjoyed Sylvie's for what it was. She seemed kind, not overly friendly, and very blunt, but it's not my place to judge anyone's personality unless it interferes directly with my customer experience. And, in person, there were no issues. The services that she provided me with and her treatment of me as a client were more than acceptable. I wasn't uncomfortable at all making conversation with her, and she seems to have done a good, thorough job. It hurt, but it was quick, which I've heard is all you can hope for with a Brazilian, and I was out of there in 15 minutes. I did feel like there was some residual wax when I left (none that I could see or find with my hands, but I could feel when walking), but, since I this was my first one, I just assumed it was normal. She was very patient when I had some trouble pulling up the groupon on my phone, and almost let me leave with just my information which I thought was very accommodating. I ended up being able to access it. She also gave a little goodie bag of chocolates "for the holidays" on my way out. God, those were some damn good chocolates. To sum up, I did have very low expectations for the overall experience after reading all the negative hype, but (a sizable but), besides the frustrating, time-consuming phone tag, I was pleased with my experience. I found Sylvie through a Groupon coupon and I have been going to her every other month for over a year now for facials. I love the products she uses, I love her technique and I enjoy our lively conversations. She has a lovely home where her spa is located and it's always a very comfortable experience. I've been using Sylvie's service for a long time, mostly facials, eye-brows, and make-up. I think she is great. She has a great taste, knows tons of beauty secrets, and loves making women beautiful. She's been in this business for many years and is a great professional. As for conversational manners Sylvie can be a little straightforward, but I'd never call her rude or offensive. Being not a native English speaker she might have problems with the words choice, but I don't think she ever has an intention to offend/insult anyone, leave alone her customers! read more

I used to do my eyebrows myself but two weeks ago i really messed up...I had met Sylvie a few times in social events before and i knew she had a spa so i decided to give her a chance. She told me that it could take one hour ! It seemed very long to me for eyebrows but when i get there, she explained me that she takes her time for eyebrows as it defines the line of your face and she cannot make a mistacke. That make sence...She explained me each step and she did a great job. I really wanted this experience to be as positive as what I've read prior. My visit was for a Brazilian wax and was purchased as a Groupon (2 visits in the package, this was my first). Each time I spoke to her on the phone to book the appointment she was very short and to the point and didn't seem very personable. The day of the appointment I had to bring my 14-month-old with me. Before you jump down my throat, I tried all three of my sitters and they could not watch him, plus I don't have any family near by. I could not reschedule because Sylvie is booked at least 2-3 weeks in advance. It took several attempts to find even this one slot to fit, plus my anniversary is this weekend so I needed the service done soon. She disdainfully asked me if I had an appointment as I was getting my son out of the car, and the look of scorn on her face made me feel sheepish and unwelcome. The space was so tiny and cramped I was worried my baby would trip but he had snacks and thankfully sat still. Sylvie was NOT one for conversation and she complained of being in Michigan and said she'd rather be in New York because "people take care of themselves there, not like they do here." In response I told her about friends of mine on the East Coast who got stuck in the snowstorm last year with 8 feet of snow agains their home. In the middle of my story she asked me, "What's your point?" I was just trying to point out to her that Michigan is not so bad and that you have to take the bad with the good, but apparently she didn't care to chit-chat. Sylvie also said that "no one wants to do Brazilian waxes because they don't like looking at others' parts." This was when I asked her if she was the sole proprietor. Thanks, I feel gross now. About five minutes into the appointment my son started crying because of the lull in our "conversation," so he couldn't see me or hear my voice. Sylvie tisked and said that babies do that after 10 minutes. Um, no, he's never done that before. She stated, "Yes, after ten minutes babies just cry if they don't know where they are or who they're with." Ok, fine. Call it what you want...clearly her point was to express her annoyance with a crying infant two feet from us. The only redeeming thing is that she finished in ten minutes. She was writing down some information and she had her back to me the whole time, never once turning around to enunciate, which would've been useful because she has a thick French accent. The visit was completely impersonal, I felt like she was admonishing Michigan (and furthermore, the States) because she acted like she is trapped here, and it seemed like a capital sin to have brought my baby (who was well-behaved except for his crying, which subsided within 2 minutes). After I use my second Groupon I definitely will NOT be back. Reading the Groupon description I absolutely did not get what I paid for. There was no "soothing environment," "30-minute experience," or anything like that. I refuse to lose money so I will go back for the second treatment; however, count on that being my last visit. read more
