This is an ok gym, but I didn't end up joining it. The b.o. scent that assails you as soon as you walk through the door is unusual; I've never been to a stinky crossfit gym before. But this isn't a crossfit gym first; it's a martial arts gym first. The scent could be forgivable, but the real reason why this gym was a hard pass was the state of the crossfit area: It's small: ok. Not a lot of room for tall people with long arms: still ok. A cute little gym dog leaving fur everywhere: not ok. So dirty behind the weights that you can't see the floor: hell no. I forgot my nice Manduka hand towel there after my complimentary workout but was so skeeved out from the filth that I didn't want to go back and get it. read more

Whether it comes to skills training or just all around fitness, Systems has it all. My wife surprised me with a one month membership over the holidays and I immediately signed up for a year after that ended. With work, wife and kids, there is always a class available to fit my schedule. I have only attended the striking classes but they are a great mixture of skills training, working through specific drills and gut wrenching conditioning . Coaches are great at giving specific points and recommendations to improving technique. There are plenty of guys and girls of all ages in each class. From the first day I walked into Systems Training Center both my 10 year old daughter and I were greeted with a smile, positive energy and overall great service. The owner Marcus Kowal was conducting one of his staff meeting but dropped everything to answer my questions (this was in July 2013). After being invited to a free session and having already made up my mind the first day I walked in, I became a member the day of my free session. I am so pleased to be able to have selected this Fitness Center to help me jump back into my fitness journey. It offers a Kid's MMA class on Tuesday and Thursday night's. My daughter can attend the Kids MMA class while I can take the Thai Pad or CrossFit class. Killing two birds with one stone. One of the things that immediately sold me other than the great energy from the owner, was the fact that my daughter can take any of the same classes I take too, and that is important to me. In addition, I was able to freeze my daughter's account while her knee healed and not worry about paying for service not being provided. At this Fitness Center you become family, not a number. If you're looking for a place for intense workouts this is definitely it! They have lots of different options of classes and the times are pretty consistent throughout the week; so its easy to keep it on a schedule. I got a 3-month groupon for crossfit classes and I was going regularly and really liked all the classes. After 3 weeks, I got a job and wouldn't be able to come in, so I asked if we could put a hold on my groupon and after I finished my job I could come back to the gym. They told me that it was not possible and all I could do is enroll for a "better price" after my job was done. So basically I lost the money I had spent for the 3 months. Everyone at this gym is dating each other and it's like you're back in high school being the odd one out of a group. Not sure if I'd come back or refer anyone over to them. The classes itself were good and they helped me when I was struggling and motivated me to get stronger. I'm a pretty lean person, just wanted to tone and get stronger, my life however does not revolve around going to the gym everyday for the entire day. I have a job and a schedule so it would be nice if I wasn't judged for not having time to go to work hardcore after a 12-14 work day. read more

I trained at a local Krav Maga facility nearby for 3 years, but I felt like I needed something closer and I was ready to take it to the next level. I stopped by this gym one night and talked to one of the guys who was training and he invited me to come back and talk to the owner Marcus who had recently purchased the gym. Marcus invited me to come in and try the class and it was like nothing I ever experienced before. The class was fun, high paced, a great workout and I learned a lot. Marcus was teaching the class that day and he gave me a lot of personal, one on one attention to make sure that everything I was doing was correct. Since I've been a member, this gym has really grown and it has a family feel to it, not a corporate feel. The guys with more experience are willing to help out the guys with less experience, they have kids classes, and I can still practice my krav maga here as well. What I really enjoy about this gym, is that they have affordable pricing and a very involved owner and staff. Marcus goes far beyond his call of duty and takes the time out to talk to you to make sure you get everything you need. Same with the trainers. It is also nice to have actual professionals of the sport teaching the classes. That is definitely a plus for all of the people training there. I can't say that I venture to Hawthorne very often, but I made the trek this past Saturday to check out the new 11am Crossfit class at Systems and it was worth the drive. The gym is easy to find, just about a mile off the El Segundo exit. There's plenty of street parking which is always a plus. Systems Training Center offers a wide variety of classes. I walked in as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class was wrapping up and some other members were sparring in the ring. In addition to newly added Crossfit, they also offer Krav Maga, BJJ, MMA, Kickboxing, Fight, Thai Pads and Kids MMA classes. There's something for everyone. Except yogis. Sorry folks, no hot yoga here. The Crossfit class was held in a separate room in the back of the gym. If you're a newbie, don't be intimidated! There may be guys grappling on the ground as you walk by but they're nothing but nice. I immediately made friends with Yolanda, a new member and Hawthorne local. She had been a member since July but was new to Crossfit as well. She was also gushing about the weight she's lost in the short time she's been a member. That's always promising. To be honest, I'm not really a "Crossfit" fan but I enjoyed this class because it was more about learning the fundamentals and less about showing off and being the first to finish the WOD (workout of the day). The first 30mins of class consisted of a warm up, intro to Crossfit and short fundamentals lesson. The class was taught by the gym's owner and lead instructor, Marcus Kowal. Marcus carefully explained the proper technique and mechanics for some common CF workouts. We finished the class off with the WOD called Cindy (not sure why they're named the way they are but I am now not a fan of Cindys) CINDY 5 Pull Ups 10 Push Ups 15 Squats As Many Rounds As Possible (AMRAP) in 20 Minutes Pull ups are the worst! Thankfully, they took into consideration the fact that women lack the necessary upper body strength to do an unassisted pull up so we had the help of some elastic bands to do our kipping pull ups. We ran slightly over and the guys who were waiting for the next class were cheering us on as we struggled through the last few minutes of the workout. It was rough but we were all glad we made it through the end. And there was no puking! I'd definitely recommend checking this gym out. You have so many class options and it's got a great, welcoming environment. I believe the first class is free (at least for South Bay/Hawthorne locals) but I'd call to confirm. They're also offering a Women's Rape Prevention Seminar this Saturday, August 31st from 1pm to 3pm ($25). Awesome place! Always a good workout! All staff are very welcoming. About 20 of us started a 6 week challenge, we go 3 nights per week. We're in our 4th week now and we all love it. Our trainers push us in a good way. Even if we can't or think we can't do it, they believes in us. Maddie is amazing and one of our favorite trainers here at Systems. She notices all the progress we have made and praises our achievements, whether its completing a push-up or executing our squats. Some days are tough, but in the end we thank all the people who have helped us achieve success. Each trainer is very motivating, encouraging and gives great advice for nutrition. I can't say enough about how great this experience has been thus far. We all met as strangers and now we're all planning to taking classes here once our challenge ends. The ones struggling dig deep to find strength to keep pushing forward and it always seems to encourage the entire class. That emotion can not be purchased and it can not be faked. 3. It is fun. I came in for a trial run and all seemed well, until the manager told me a year subscription was necessary for a good rate. I told him I couldn't commit that long because of how busy I might be in the future (full time work and school) and he said don't worry, just sign up for the contract and if I ever wanted to leave there would be a penalty fee. Fast forward four months later. I attempt to cancel and the gym says no, the manager who signed me up denies saying such things to me, and I am paying for a gym I cant go to because I'm busy 60 hours a week. Tried speaking to upper management and they told me I have to pay it through. Very frustrating. Nothing's worse than having a manager give you false information to comfort you into signing up, then being told by upper management that you have no idea what you are talking about :( read more

Systems Training Center has become a home away from home, It has turned into a place I go not only to better myself but share the journey with others bettering themselves. That's just the type of environment this place is, you can come meet friends and get lost in the hard work with the number of classes to choose from, that fit any type of goal. I couldn't tell you which class I like best because it really just depends on my day and what mood I'm in. Some days CrossFit is the answer, other days I need to get some stress out with any one of their martial arts classes or self defense programs. It is also very cool to know that all of the instructors have competed at the highest levels in each of their disciplines.
