When he moved to San Diego, I had to transition to another doctor, and unfortunately my back progressively worsened over time. Eventually, I felt completely out of options and decided to book an appointment to see Dr. Evangelista again--driving down to San Diego specifically to see him at San Diego Orthobiologics Medical Group. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. He immediately identified a significant change on my recent MRI compared to my previous imaging--something that could clearly explain my rapidly increasing pain. His attention to detail and clinical insight were impressive, but what truly sets him apart is his integrity and honesty. Instead of recommending a procedure at his own practice, he referred me to his former colleague who specializes in the treatment that would be most beneficial for me right now, even though he could not perform it himself. That level of selflessness and patient-first care is incredibly rare in medicine. The facility itself is excellent--very clean, modern, and welcoming. The staff is extremely friendly and professional, and you feel comfortable and cared for from the moment you walk in. I also truly believe in what they are doing there; they are clearly focused on the most up-to-date procedures and technology, and it shows in how knowledgeable and forward-thinking the team is. I will absolutely be back there in the future, but I am genuinely grateful that Dr. Evangelista sent me to the right place for my immediate needs at the time. That speaks volumes about his character and commitment to doing what is best for his patients. Dr. Evangelista truly takes the time to think through each patient's situation, explain options, and guide you through difficult decisions with empathy and clarity. I did not know that he was also located in Carlsbad I was under the assumption that he was only in La Jolla. So, I found myself at Direct Orthopedic Care in Carlsbad as it was closer to me. The girls at the front desk were very nice and helpful, the facility was very clean. I was told by the orthopedic specialist named Brian Jones that I would need surgery for my spiral fracture on my left foot fifth metatarsal. I was then given a boot that went all the way up to my knee. Upon checking out I was told that my visit was $1,100. They took three x-rays and gave me a boot. I was not charged immediately as I did not have all my payment information available and my phone had just died. They made an exception for this and told me they could bill me later. Not being familiar with the medical system I didn't think much of it until my drive home when I realized that the amount seems very excessive. I got in touch with the billing team for DOC and they reached out to the Carlsbad location to discover that they billed me $600 more than I should have been billed for a boot that I did not receive. Thankfully we got that sorted out and I paid the $500 that I owed over the phone, which in my opinion was still way too much. I just saw Dr. Norman Kane and he told me that surgery is not necessary and that this fracture would heal naturally and I will not have repercussions for going the route of non-operation. They gave me a shoe to wear and I will go back in two weeks to check the healing process. Long story short I now have a $300 boot that I do not need and learned a valuable life lesson. I am very thankful I got a second opinion and feel very bad for the countless individuals that may have gone through unnecessary invasive treatments per the recommendation(s) of Direct Orthopedic Care.
