This is a bit far from the usual places we go for Polish food. It's located in Justice, IL. It's kind of a quiet, small town. The good news is that they have late hours, they don't close at 8 pm like most places. The staff was friendly and attentive. Food portions were very generous, you will have leftovers for sure. Prices are very typical of this cuisine. You'll have to walk up the steps to go inside. We ordered Highlander soup with smoked rib, tripe soup, Polish plate number 2, and Bavarian style pork shank. -Highlander soup with smoked rib 5 - the broth is sour due to it being sauerkraut, but you have to eat it with the smoked rib and potatoes. I ordered the cup so it looks like a bowl size. -tripe soup 5 - this is a good soup. We got the cup size, it's good for a cold night. -Polish plate number 2 5 - it comes with two stuffed cabbage rolls, Polish sausage, 6 meat pierogis, and dumplings. You can choose your side. I chose dumplings. Everything was delicious. Polish sausage was tender and juicy. Cabbage rolls and pierogis were fully cooked. -Bavarian style pork shank 5 - you get two humongous pieces of pork shank and the meat falls easily off the bone. It was very tender. read more

First have to say that we had a wonderful server Lumina. Friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. Portion size gigantic. The winners were the pork cutlet, Polish plate , beet soup, sauerkraut/ mushroom pierogis and the beets and cucumber salads. Only issue was the broken outside elevator. Mom had hard time with stairs. And we were hoping to have a party for my mother here but our disabled sister could never go up the stairs. Hopefully it will be fixed so we can come back. read more

If you want an authentic Polish meal, this is the place to come. We wondered into this restaurant before a Fire game just down the street and decided to get a mix of their starters. We went with pierogis (cheese and meat), cabbage roles and the polish baguette. All were very authentic and extremely tasty. He started with the potato pancakes, which were big and crispy but a little bland, so maybe choose a different appetizer next time. But then came the Polish Plate #2--whoa, it was huge! OMG, I can't believe I didn't know about this place before. A neighbor told us about a restaurant she & a friend went to for leg of lamb. The only place they ever found that served it. While I am not a fan of lamb we offered to take the neighbor back there since it had been awhile. I had no idea it was a Polish restaurant until I read the menu, then I got excited to go. We were not disappointed. So many Polish dishes that my Mom, Busia & Cioc made growing up I wanted to try them all. While in Chicago we try to sample different foods and dining experiences the city has to offer and managed to come across Szarotka's restaurant. We were not disappointed. In one word, Delicious! The service was great as we were promptly greeted and seated at a comfortable table for four. The area is good for families yet well suited for larger events and larger meals. I sampled a chicken dish bathed in a very unique teriyaki sauce with mushrooms and vegetables. My side of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes completed my meal. Prompt attention by server, limited wine selection, I believe full bar service is available. Sampler plate 1 included delightful grilled smoked sausage, cheese pierogi with bacon, tasty but not overly tart sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and gołubki with choice of tomato or mushroom gravy. Both were requested on the side. I've always liked tomato sauce-that's how my mom and Boosh made it-but the mushroom gravy was rich and very flavorful. I may have to switch my preference! Took my family for dinner tonight. The food was fantastic and the staff were attentive and fun, Lumina was a sweetheart. So much was familiar and so much was new. Its hard to find food that compares to home made but they knocked it out of the park. Let's start with the Potato Pancakes: Not the flat greasy things that you get at other places but big, thick, deliciousness that don't even require sour cream or apple sauce. The Gloabki: They weren't what I was expecting, as I have never had one that could touch my wife's. These were filled with rice and meat, I say that because there was more rice than meat. However they were possibly the best that we've ever had. The mushroom sauce was delicious and the tomato sauce was tasty with a touch of caraway. Sooo good. Pierogi:: Delicious and tender. Next time I will ask if we could get them fried a little. Sausage & Kraut: Delicious, Delicious, Delicious. Cheesecake: Amazing. With a blackberry/wine sauce and whipped cream. Food was exceptionally fresh and generous potions all cooked to perfection as if you were in momma's kitchen. Will definitely be returning to Szarotka probably sooner then I think. What an excellent meal we had. They don't have sweet and sour cabbage but I added a little sugar to the sauerkraut and it was lovely. Their breaded pork tenderloin is huge and tender and delicious. The mashed potatoes and potato dumplings are excellent. Gravy is pretty good. The potato pancakes are awesome. Thick. We had a very nice gentleman serving us who was very accommodating. We had the stuffed cabbage with tomato sauce and those were amazing. They give you huge portions so you will have leftovers. The tomato sauce was perfectly flavored. Great polish dishes prepared perfectly. We had the polish platter and potato pancakes. The mood in the restaurant is different since it's set up like a catering hall. Big tables, no entry area or hostess to greet you. On our midweek visit with 4, we were the only ones there. We almost drove away thinking it was closed. It was not the best experience to be in a big lonely space. Positive part was we had the waiters and the kitchens whole attention. Probably better at lunchtime.
