I chose the custom combo and loved the "Zeppelin", which reportedly is the Lithuanian national dish and reminded me of Norwegian "Kumla" dumplings, probably too heavy for many people but lovely to me. The schnitzel, borscht, and Siberian pelmeni were all bland, but bacon bits with onions and butter and sour cream made the meal. The band was talented and had a good repertoire but too loud to hold a casual conversation and the tables are a bit close together. I had the always delicious summer borscht, so fresh with beats, sour cream, dill and scallions. (They sell it at Little Vilnius across the street.) Served with the best garlic potatoes ever! Mussels were scrumptious in an amazing creamy lemon garlic sauce with multicolored gem tomatoes and spinach & perfect garlic bread were more than enough for an entree. The Schweinshaxen platter was amazing! The sauerkraut in particular was the best I've ever had. Then the little farmers cheese beignets were the perfect end with berries, chocolate and berry sauce. I was actually going back and forth about whether or not we should go here due to the mixed reviews. I pulled the trigger and decided to come here. Parking lot is ample. It was very quiet on a weeknight. Our server was very attentive. We ordered schnitzel combo, half country style duck, and Siberian pelmeni. Prices were fair for the huge portion sizes. You won't go hungry for sure. Be sure to check out their specials during the week. -schnitzel combo 4.5 - I liked the pork and chicken schnitzel, there was nothing wrong with those. They were easy to cut and the meat wasn't dry. The veal was disappointing, it wasn't as tasty and it was a bit salty. You definitely have to eat them with the vegetables. The spatzle was really good. It's like homemade pasta. It's not heavy. -half country style duck 2.5 - The skin was crispy and the duck was moist. Why the low score? For the price, there wasn't a ton of meat. -Siberian pelmeni 5 - the best dish of the night. I believe the fillings are a mixture of veal, pork, beef, and onions. These are great for either a snack, appetizer, or main entree. You want to dip them in the sour cream and vinegar to enhance the flavor. Would I come here again? This was my first time trying Grand Duke Restaurant, and overall, it was a pretty good experience - though there were a few bumps along the way. When our group arrived, no one was there to greet us, and we stood at the entrance for a good five minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. We eventually had to flag someone down to get seated, which wasn't the best start. Once we settled in, I really liked the cozy atmosphere and the addition of live music. It definitely gave the place a lively vibe, although as the night went on, the music got so loud that it was hard to have a normal conversation across the table. Our server took quite a while to come by and take our orders, and overall, the service felt inconsistent throughout the evening. That said, the food definitely made up for it - the portions were huge, and everything we ordered was delicious! I'm taking off one star for the service and another for the noise level, but I'd still consider coming back for the food alone. read more

We went on a Friday evening and when we walked in we were greeted by a gracious host. We were seated in a booth and reviewed the ambiance of the restaurant. We were surprised by the chic decor of the restaurant. Friday night had live music which was great surprise for us. It's always nice to enjoy your meal with a lively entertainment. The menu had Eastern European and American cuisine. So much to choose from. Our waitress was super nice and very attentive. We ordered a cup of the borsch soup and vareniki (pierogis in a cream sauce) for appetizers. Both were delicious. We went in for Thanksgiving because it's been so busy and we didn't want to cook. We started with the grilled octopus and it was delicious. Even better were the potato pancakes with duck. Very moist and delicious. The bummer were the muscles. They were not fresh and tasted past their prime. The turkey dinners were amazing and came with copious amounts of food. They also said we could only stay for one hour. This made us feel unwelcome and unimportant as customers. We were in the mood for eastern European cuisine and thought we would check out Grand Dukes. At first I was a little concerned that there was no one at the front to seat us so we stood there for a bit while we watch another employee move the same plant from one end of the dining room to the other and then back again. Then she finally said "sit anywhere you like." After a few minutes our server finally came with the menus. We were interested in the lunch menu so I selected the Breaded Pork Cutlet and my wife had the Stuffed Cabbage. Here's where they lost a star...The food came at a decent time but only my wife's order came. The server said they were still making my potato's. It was about 4-5 more minutes before my order came out. As proper courtesy my wife waited until my order came out. Fortunately, her food didn't get cold while she was waiting. The food was delicious...The Cutlet and the German potato's were perfect and my wife said the stuffed cabbage was excellent as well. the portions were also abundant. We went in on a cold, rainy night and were immediately greeted with a warm, friendly and cozy atmosphere. The menu was extensive, and almost a little overwhelming. I'm reconnecting to my Lithuanian roots and appreciated the broad number of Lithuanian dishes - and also a selection of other Eastern European dishes and beers on tap. We ordered the fried bread with warm cheese and garlic blanket appetizer, which was deliciously cozy and tasted like Canadian poutine and a cheese fondue had a baby. For dinner, I ordered the Zeppelins and my husband ordered the Samogotian pancakes with meat. Both were fantastic and had generous (massive) portions - and leftovers were great for lunch! I'm excited to go back and bring my dad who hasn't had Lithuanian food in decades when he's visiting next - I think he will be so excited to have some comfort foods he grew up with! read more

This is when I wish Yelp would let us give half stars, because Grand Dukes really deserves 2.5 for my experience, but I'm not willing to go as high as three. Let's break it down. - First, the restaurant was busy and bustling (but not as noisy as it could have been) on a Friday night. There are tables, booths and a large bar area in the back. - We were the first table from the door because that was what was available. Despite there being a curtain hung to try to mitigate this, cold air still got in, and worse, people are smoking right outside the door so the whole front area smells like it and you walk through smoke to get in or out (by the way, the Smoke Free Illinois Act says no smoking or vaping within 15 feet of a restaurant door). - Our waitress started out strong but then basically disappeared. More annoying, when a large table was seated next to us (a table for two) she would keep checking with them but not check with us, though there were things we needed. - Food was a mixed bag. We started with the pretzel bites which were really tasty; they came with a cheese sauce and a mustard (usually I am not much for mustard but this one was really good, both sweet and tangy). My entree of schwein schnitzel was very good; originally I had wanted brown gravy but they were out of it? So I got the mushroom cream gravy which did not disappoint. The side of "grilled" veggies definitely seemed steamed, and both they and the spaetzel would have benefitted from salt and pepper...which was not provided on the table...but since we could never reach out waitress I had an under seasoned meal. My boyfriend got the potato pancakes with meat but they were too heavy and greasy; he said one as an appetizer would have been ok. Also, while the menu disclosed that they would be topped with bacon, it didn't mention the onions that come on it, and since he doesn't like onions he wasn't pleased. - The ladies' restroom was clean but had the most aggressively scented candle lit in there (& it's not a tiny space) that I started choking from the fake perfume smell. Yuck. They do have quite a big menu, including Lithuanian, Polish, Hungarian and German style dishes. With several days notice (and about $700) you can also order a whole roast suckling pig to feed 15 friends (and feel like Henry VIII, I guess). Since we didn't have the greatest experience, and given the smoke situation, I'm not sure we would return. read more

The food was really good. The service was horrible. We arrived at our reservation at 6:15, we were seated right away. That was the last we saw of anyone for quite a while. The server finally took our order aftew we inquired about ordering. I complained to the manager after 45 minutes of not getting anything but water. Absolutely love this place and their authentic cuisine. I had an amazing time with my girlfriend exploring and building our own plates from their extensive offerings on their menu. I did find it odd that they have a surcharge to cover the credit card processing fees which I am entirely against. Why not just charge a little more for each dish? What's next, am I to pay a % for their Direct-TV subscription too? Or for their electricity bill? Unfortunately this is the cost of doing business and customers shouldn't be asked to pay more in my opinion. 4/5 rating for now, I will most likely return. read more

The prices are moderately high but portion sizes are ridiculously generous, any entrée is at least two full meals and any combo is three. I think maybe the best dishes are Lithuanian. They allowed their young kids to run around the restaurant screaming. They were tossing a small ball around and jumping on the small stage. The parents did nothing to stop them. Food was served very fast and fresh. Everything was very tasty and well seasoned. The salmon was so flavorful. We all tried each other's dishes. I loved my sister's Jaeger Schnitzel as the swiss cheese and mushrooms on top added so much flavor! The sides I chose for my dish were my fave which were the spatzel and cold salad trio.The Vareniki was so yummy filled with mushrooms and with savory gravy. With such a vast menu, I can't wait to come back and try more. I don't often get the opportunity to have European food so I was really pleased with my meal. Service was good.
