Okay, the restaurant part no longer exists. If you want sit down Lithuanian food you have to go across the street to the "Mother " restaurant (that used to be located on Harlem Ave.) now in Downers ~ Grand Duke's. This side still offers carry-out from deli counter and gift shop type items. Be aware that the parking lot is still very small, extremely close parking spaces and still home to the Mexican restaurant. Hope that stops the confusion. read more

Another place I won't visit until the virus is gone. Lovely blonde counted lady has mask under her nose. I said please cover your nose, she said the mask drives her crazy. I said but they work. A great experience with some very unique (and hard to find) Lithuanian food. We found this at eatery through Yelp and the nearby feature. We are always open to trying out not just new places but new food types. This place is categorized as Russian, but the menu is Lithuanian. FYI. It's very unassuming on the outside. The menu has some great options and I'd recommend that you ask the server about the alcohol options as they import a lot of things direct from the area. They have several different platter options which I think is good to be able to try a variety of options. It's all hearty and filling, so you'll leave full! Visiting Old Vilnius cafe is an experience that not only offers food from Eastern Europe but a wide assortment of treasures as well. Located in a strip mall unless you know what your looking for, (do any of us really know what we are looking for?) one can easily drive by without even noticing this tiny gem, literally. There are maybe a dozen tables in a room that is decorated like a random room in a long lost castle in an aged European city. Sitting at the dark colored table with matching chair the menu felt like a treasure map that contained all types of goodness. Lithuanian, Polish, and German influenced foods just to name a few. With so many plates available I was happy to see that a combo plate, pick three was available. With so many choices, sausage Polish and Lithuanian, saerkraut, kugelis, schnitzel, dumplings, potato pancakes making a decision was easy, anything you wanted to order had to be good, right? I mean have you ever had not good potato pancakes? The food turned out to be just as I expected. Reminiscent of my time in Alsip Illinois, just south of Chicago where I had first experienced the same food I was enjoying, sausage and saerkraut, and kugelis. This was my comfort food, in an atmosphere that was fitting for the food. A wide assortment of beers including domestic (bottles) and imports on tap were available in several sizes, I being the designated driver passed on the beer. However at a nearby table a beer mug filed with beer looked huge and I'm sure was as good as my huge plate of food was. There is a shop a Lithuanian sausage lengths away packed with Eastern European gifts, from books, that well, weren't in English, to shirts that showed how proud you are to sport a shirt from someone else's homeland, to a vast selection of alcohol from Vodka to beer and wine, including several varieties that came in very unique looking bottles. I spent much time in the quaint shop as I didnt know what treasures I wanted to take home. My leftovers were my souvenir. Walking around a corner and much to my surprise there it was, a deli. I felt like anything could have been hiding around the corner as it seemed that there were surprises around each one. I was happy to see that I was able to take home pre cooked food and almost anything I had seen on the menu. I was not surprised by my visit to Old Vilnius cafe, it was everything I thought it would be, a hearty meal, in an unique atmosphere with a little shop packed with gifts that made me feel like I was not just minutes away from home. I had the Country Style Duck with Kugelis, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. There's little better on a bitter Chicago night (complete with lake effect snow falling outside!) than a warm, comforting plate of Baltic goodies, from warm potato pancakes to perfectly prepared roast duck. Our group had the scrambled egg crepe, titi fruity(full of fresh berries, and Nutella banana-the presentation was beautiful, food was delicious, and plenty of food! Grand Duke's (63rd & Harlem) little brother/sister! I had a Groupon from the place that was nearing expiration - the only reason I hadn't gone is that it's kind of far and inconvenient for me. But knowing that the food would be along the lines of the Lithuanian food at its sister restaurant, I knew it would be well worth the trip. Started out with a cup of mushroom barley soup - good stuff, though suspiciously much like the sauce that adorns several entrée offerings. But that's OK - it's still good. As they say, "when in Lithuania, do as the Lithuanians do" - that includes ordering a half liter of Svyturys beer. Goes great with dinner - would've ordered more, but the meal fills one up pretty well, so more beer isn't always a good idea. Time for dinner. As usual, I have a tough time figuring out just what I want - there are soooo many good options. I decided to do a "Make your own Combo" - three decent sized options from the dinner menu at $18.99. I had to order potato pancakes as the ones at GD's are awesome (I've ordered the dinner potato pancake dish at GD as an entrée and taken some home too). The potato pancakes here were good - though could have been crispier - they were a little mushy. Next - breaded pork! This was awesome as expected - served over some mashed potatoes which were a little bit of overkill with the potato pancakes. This had the "soup sauce" on it that I previously mentioned. Finally - my third option on the combo... Siberian Dumplings with Pork. This was something new to me and I like to try different stuff - but often get into the trap of ordering things I've had and loved before. Well... add another item to that category! These were like raviolis with a thinner pasta around the meat in a light broth with a fresh pork-like bacon topping on the dish. Wowsa. Flavor and then some - if bacon lovers stumbled upon this dish, pig farmers wouldn't be able to keep up with demand. I decide to take one of the potato pancakes home - which left a little room for dessert. They had a turtle cheesecake that looked interesting, so I ordered it. Another hit! This was a piece of good cheesecake with a layer of hot fudge-like chocolate between the graham cracker crust and the cheesecake at the tip of the serving - and going back about halfway. But here's the kicker - it was warm while the cheesecake itself was cold. Not entirely sure how they managed to do that! Now - after a gangbuster review like this, five stars would usually follow. But here's the thing - the place has its "rough edges". Overall, the servers are nice - but they miss things. They brought me a bread basket, but no plate (used the plate that the cup of soup was on). Also. no silverware or napkin at the table - had to ask for that. They have about 28 spot lights on the ceiling - 12 were out - and it didn't look as if they were out "by design". Entrée was slow to come out as well - I wasn't in a hurry anyway, but it was a little longer than what would be "usual". So given the hiccups - fours stars is appropriate. The restaurant is tucked in a strip mall and if you didn't know it was there, you'd miss it. This European deli has a small restaurant attached with about 10 tables. First look at the menu and I get really overwhelmed because it is so big. When all else fails, you should just order the combo and get it over with, otherwise you'll be there all night trying to decide what you actually want. 3 stars for slow service and a slightly rude server. This place is a hidden gem! Great food for a great price. We have been eating at the Mexican restaurant next door for years and never thought to go there. Friendly service and fantastic food. I had the veal and my wife had the polish combo. My kids had cheeseburgers and fries. Even their hamburgers were gourmet style. It was my first time having Lithuanian beer. I just finished eating at Old Vilnius Cafe for the last time. Why? Because this once 4-star (according to my original review) restaurant has seriously declined over my past few visits, culminating in tonight's horrible meal. The service has slid to the point that you have to wait and wait and wait for your food, your drink refills, and ultimately your check. Tonight our soup and meal came out at the same time, so our food sat getting cold while we ate our soup. I thought it was perhaps a singular occurrence last time we came, which is why we decided to try it again tonight. No. Clearly this establishment has gone downhill. My meal was burned to the point of being inedible. The kugelis was blackened on the top. Our server, Anda asked how it was and I told her it was awful. She offered to have the cook make me another, but I told her I didn't want another one. It was terrible. I told her again how bad it was when she came to clear the mostly uneaten meal from the table. I was never offered something different, and when the bill came the burned food was on the bill. I told Anda how disappointed I was and she proceeded to argue with me that 1) that's how the food is supposed to be and 2) she offered to bring me something different, which, she didn't. She offered to bring me another kugelis. I am so disappointed in the decline of this establishment, especially to see that the staff simply doesn't seem to care about customer concerns, or in pleasing them. I was, what I'd consider, a semi-regular customer. We came about once every few months. But from now on I will drive a little further and go to Grand Duke's on Harlem for Lithuanian food, where the food and service continue to be excellent. EDIT: I am shocked to read another reviewer state that they are owned by the same family as Grand Duke's. The food is vastly different, and the service is so much better there. read more

Here's my question. How have the Lithuanian People survived so long eating this food? I have German/Polish blood in me, and I've never shied away from a hearty meal. Then again, there might be cause to state I've never shied away from ANY meal, but I digress. How is it Lithuanians aren't all 750 pounds? How do any Lithuanians live to any age past 35 without their hearts exploding in a Cholesterol rage? Do the Chefs have to join OPEC? I have never encountered such a wall of starch and grease like I did during today's throwdown at Vilnius. I don't know anything about Lithuanian eating habits, save for one of my high school chums was Lithuanian and his family et open-faced Ham Sandwiches for breakfast. (This was in the early sixties before gourmet eating was legal in the US). Maybe what I had today was the epitome of Litho fare. I don't know. The place was packed, and people were tucking in, that's for sure. All the plates that came out looked like what I had, and I ordered what the non-English-speaking waitron suggested. It also wasn't the most expensive thing on the menu, so I know I wasn't being grandstanded. Lunch started with a Wild Mushroom soup that was delicious, and quite light, despite being described as a "creamy" soup. I had heard this place was a haven for Garlic, and as a strict aficionado of the "stinking rose", I ordered what is purported to be the menu "Garlic Bomb", the "Fried Bread". What came out was a large dish of thick matchsticks of what appeared to be Pumpernickel, fried crisp in Garlic-infused oil. Over the top was some sort of mozzarella-type cheese. There was about a quarter-inch oil slick on the bottom of the dish, that did not look inviting. Here was the first "Uh-Oh". Heating certain cheeses in a Microwave melts the cheese, but also effects a byproduct of gredue that slinks to the bottom of the cooking vessel. It's not appetizing. This plate was obviously the work of "Chef Mike". Sampling the sticks "up top", they were indeed chock full of the stinky stuff, and rich to the taste. A few bites in and I was done. That cloying feeling when you eat too much rich stuff was on the horizon, and I still had my Entree to go. I set the plate aside, and it appeared untouched, even though I had et my share. The Entree (the "Lithuanian Sampler") came, and it looked like a platter for 4. A hunk of Kugelis the size and shape of a building brick; a long, browned tube that was ostensibly "Potatoe Sausage", alongside another short and squat grey sausage that had absolutely NO plate appeal, and a Litho specialty called a "Zeppelin"-which was again, a doughy white football that looked uncooked. A mound of dark Kraut rounded out the plate. Yes, and over EVERYTHING was sprinkled some pinkish meat preparation that I could not identify. What I DID identify was another off-putting oil slick at the bottom of the plate. I sampled everything before me, and found none of it except the Kraut to have any discernible flavor whatsoever. The Kraut was greasy, and tasted reheated and old. There were also a LOT of whole Bay leaves that kept getting stuck in my teeth and resisted being chewed, I made a pile of them on the bread plate. I don't think I've ever left that much food on a plate in a restaurant. I didn't complain, because I had no reference as to whether this was actually a fine fine Litho Resto, or a Crime against cuisine. As I saw the same plate come out a number of times, and the folks accepting them were digging in, I figured I had just chosen wrong, and that's not the resto's fault. I asked for a few doggy boxes, and when I went to put the remainder of the Fried Bread in one, it tipped over and I saw the congealed mess at the bottom of the pile. Ug. Same thing as I dumped the remainder of the sampler plate in the box. I put both boxes in the provided plastic bag. I paid thirty dollars for this lunch. $30.05, to be exact. No Booze, No Coffee, No Dessert. I contemplated this on the way out, as I was toting the bag that, if you told me contained a child's bowling ball, I would have believed you. It was that heavy. I further contemplated the family what walked in and sat down opposite me. An older Mom and Dad of Bovine/Porcine proportions, and two gorgeous, young middle-aged daughters with slim, spectacular figures. I noticed the first thing they ordered was the fried bread. You do the math. And also-that Lithuanian friend who et the Ham Sarnies for Breakfast was a superstar in the locker room due to his enormous Penis. Another Math problem... The service wasn't as lax as the reviews here would have you believe, it actually wasn't bad. Will I be back? A few bowls of the Mushroom soup would be a fine Lunch. I went to check this place out for dinner tonight with a Groupon. Being a Wednesday evening - around 5pm, not very busy. There were 2 other tables of people there when we arrived. There was a continual flow of people coming in to the storefront to buy packaged food or go to the deli. All in all, a very cute place with friendly staff. Our waiter was friendly and he was attentive. I ordered the Lithuania platter and my husband the Polish platter. Everything was really tasty with exception of the sauerkraut. My husband and I both agreed that it was kind of bland. While waiting for our food order, I checked out the store. They had all kinds of food items from Eastern Europe. The deli had a nice selection of cheese and meats. I am intrigued by cheese not from the US because you don't have to worry about Organic this way. Cheese from Europe has strict rules about not using hormones like they do in the US. So I may be back again to visit the deli. They had some delicious pastries sitting on top of the deli counter too. There were around 10 tables in there and was a good amount of space - much bigger than the area to eat at most Subway restaurants (to give you an idea). they had 2 flat screen TVs on the walls. We've been meaning to try Old Vilnius Café for some time since we pass it nearly every day. We headed over around 7:30pm on Saturday night. There was a 20 minute wait so we headed to the bar in Mi Hacienda next door for a beer. I purchased a $25 for $12 Groupon while we waited, score! Our table was ready when we walked back over 20 minutes later. The menu is extensive and we had a difficult time deciding! We ordered the fried bread in warm cheese & garlic sauce and 2 large Svyturys beers to start. Think of the fried bread as large toasted croutons with a thick, melted garlic cheese on top. A little heavy but absolute heaven. The hubby and I decided to share 2 different combo plates in order to get a taste of everything. We tried polish sausage, potato pancakes, sauerkraut, fried zeppelin, kugelis, & potato sausage. Everything was OUTSTANDING! I think it's very easy for potato-based foods to be bland and heavy, but the food was FAR from that. Our server was incredibly friendly and answered all of our questions. I have to deduct 1 star because they were out of stuffed cabbage rolls for the evening. I am a cabbage roll addict and was pretty disappointed. Old Vilnius is more than a cafe. The small store front also contains a grocery and souvenir shop. In this review, I will attempt to highlight all aspects of this fascinating new addition to Darien. First, let's discuss the souvenir shop. When you enter Old Vilnius, you pretty much walk straight into it. The souvenir shop has tons of fascinating items: flying witches on broomsticks, Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin glassware, wooden religious figures, beer steins, etc. The list goes on. Behind the souvenir shop is the grocery. There are various pastries being prepared fresh, I believe, and other Eastern European grocery items. You can even find books and DVDs here. It is a fun place to browse. You will find some odd and rare merchandise here. Now to the actual cafe. First of all, it is very small. There are only a handful of tables. The walls are painted to look like night. They are all black and what appears to be a church is painted on the wall. Very unique artwork. I ordered a huge Russian beer and the Lithuanian sausage platter. The Russian beer went down easy like a Miller. There was nothing special about it. It was just enormous. Also, I found the Lithuanian sausage too mild. It didn't taste like anything. It was a substantial sausage but it needed seasoning. Everything else was quite average as well. Perhaps Eastern European food is meant to be mild. In any case, Old Vilnius is such an interesting place that I will return. The food and service here is amazing! I built my own combo with a cabbage roll, mushroom dumplings, cheese zeppelini and everything came piping hot. The portions were so generous that I barely could finish half my plate. I brought my leftovers home for my 20 yr old son and he devoured them! My husband ordered the build your own combo and he had a pork cutlet, with kugelis and mushroom dumplings. He kept saying, "Why haven't we been here before?!?!" Our waitress was really nice and attentive. They have a gift shop with Lithuanian books and other Lithuanian related items. They also have a small grocery store. This place has it all!! I also had the meat pockets (which were so yummy) and the fried bread with cheese and garlic blanket (this was so much better then I had been prepared for - do not pass this up). Their selection of unique beers and wine was also worth taking note of. My only issue and the main reason I don't award this place five stars is the wait time. We waited much longer then I think was appropriate for our drinks and our main dishes (though the appetizers did show up promptly). They seemed to be short staffed. But for the food alone and the unique atmosphere this place was pleasantly surprising. I plan to visit again and hope my wait isn't nearly as long next time. Being adventurous one evening, we decided to give Old Vilnius Café a try. They serve traditional Lithuanian cuisine. Now, I know no nothing about Lithuanian food, so consider that in reading this review. I had the Lithuanian Combo Platter to get a varied taste of the cuisine. It included Kugelis (a thick potato pancake), Zeppelin (a meat-stuffed potato dumpling), a potato sausage and a Lithuanian sausage. The platter included sides of sauerkraut, sour cream and bacon bits. It was good, but different than anything I've had before. My wife had the Lithuanian pork tenderloin which was lightly breaded and fried. It was topped with sautéed mushrooms, onions and cheese. It was served with mashed potatoes, a creamy mushroom sauce and mixed vegetables. She enjoyed her meal. The service was polite and attentive. To the side of the restaurant is a store where they sell Lithuanian foods, magazines and other such items. While we dined, we noticed a number of people stopping in to pick up to-go orders. If you're in the western suburbs and looking for some Lithuanian cuisine, give Old Vilnius Café a try. read more

Delicious, hot European food. We enjoyed it very much! A lot of great Polish and Lithuanian options on the menu. We had mushroom soup and red beat soup with pork to start. For dinner we had potato pancakes, potato sausage and Lithuanian dumplings. Everything we had was superb. Great portions, nice server very comfortable chairs. I was very skeptical trying this place out, i don't usually go to places where they serve "authentic" food. A lot of times the food that they call authentic doesn't taste remotely close to what it should. I love lithuanian dishes, i ordered hot beat soul and zeppelins (DELICIOUS!!!!) the food was great!!! and to top it all off i had a groupon so my meal was under $20. Awesome place! read more
