I'm sad to say that while they did not close, we lost them to money over quality. I discovered this place 5 years ago, following the closure of Czech Plaza. At the time it was amazing. It was like you stepped right into a babushka's kitchen. Now? Commercialized slop. The once flavorful liver dumpling soup contained one measly - and strangely dark grey - dumpling in a bland broth. The breaded pork, while not terrible, very much tasted like warmed up freezer food. No fresh, homemade flavor as it once was. The dumplings used to be doughy, as intended. They know have the texture of a thick cut of white bread, with very little taste. The gravy is undeniably gross. It is gelatinous gruel. I'm sure this is due to the fact they're not making anything homemade to provide quality gravy. I do believe they changed hands in the past year or so. Obviously, the hands that overtook it have no passion for this sort of food and are just trying to make a buck knowing that this is one of the last local places known for Czech/Bohemian/Old country European food. I have no qualms with spending good money on good food. This is no longer the place to do that. read more

Why didn't I know about this place??? My mother in law's Polish and really picky about food....insert Yelp Search and found this gem!! It's been here 33 years??? I'm so glad I found it! This is an old man bar in the middle of nowhere but has glorious food!!!! $10 pitchers of beer and $9 manhattans!! Also Slots! Great service and 3-4 coursed meals plus coffee and Kolachkey!! This place never disappoints. Everything is always so good! Last week I deviated from my usual and tried the Reuben Sandwich - it was out of this world!! I only had 1/2 and took the other half home. You will not leave here hungry!! My Dad had the Corn Beef and Cabbage and he pretty much cleaned his plate! My wife and recently went to this restaurant. I personally am of czech decent,and this restaurant is the real deal. I had the breaded pork tenderloin which was excellent, while my wife had the half duck dinner. Both meals came with dumplings, sauer kraut gravy,homemade rye bread,and desert. Last of the Bohemians! The food here is great. My husband prefers the larger portions at other places but he can't argue with the taste. We have a large family so they always ask where the party is at and it takes a little longer to get it all together but everyone inside is nice. My family has been to this restaurant several times in the past. Now it's under new ownership. Same rude staff. The food has changed and the prices have increased. McCook Bohemian has always been a mediocre restaurant at best with its ups and downs, but now it is low scale and I'm being nice. The new owner has changed the menu and the food is not good. I had roast pork and bread dumplings with gravy, beef noodle soup, and sauerkraut. The soup was flat and tasteless, the gravy was flat, tasteless and smelled of old pan grease. They use corn starch to thicken the gravy and it comes out translucent with congealed glops. Ugh. To add flavor to everything, we added salt and salt and more salt, and pepper. That still didn't work. The pork was moist and good. The bread dumplings were just OK and much smaller than in the past. My husband had a bohemian platter and said it had changed and tasted greasy. He didn't like it. The service was rude and difficult. We asked for more gravy and the waitress is always angry, slamming the gravy boat on the table. She does it every time so we know what to expect. The glasses on the table are plastic, very old, cracked, chipped and cloudy. I asked for a glass that wasn't chipped at the top so I could drink water and the waitress huffed, snatched the glass off the table and stomped away to get me a new glass. Rude. My first visit all the way from Kendall County. I wanted REAL Bohemian food. It certainly didn't disappoint. I went with 2 lady friends who wanted Bohemian too. I ordered Breaded Pork Tenderloin and got 2 huge pieces of pork that more than filled my plate. The 3 homemade dumplings were so good along with the sauerkraut fresh rye bread and cauliflower soup. It finished up with some of the best apricot kolacky's I have ever had. The restaurant has been there for many years and is homey and relaxing. Nothing pretentious about it just down home awesome Bohemian food. I have enough for 2 more meals. The fairly new owners are doing something right because I will make the trek again. So sorry locals but what has happened to this place ? We dined here because Westchester Inn was closed on Sunday. Big mistake. The service is subpar. When seated it was next to 3 obnoxious European speaking individuals, we wanted to be moved but our server did not want to loose the table so we agreed. The server then told the table that we complained about their loudness and continued to heckle us and make it a point to everyone in the restaurant they did not care and continued drinking and swearing. When exiting they yelled across restaurant to one another 'stop harassing everyone". The stuffed cabbage had a cinnamon taste, red sauce was sweet. The liver dumpling soup was salty and had a sour taste. The potatoes were bland, no flavor. The gravy served with the breaded pork tenderloin had zero flavor and was like gelatin and the cabbage was tasteless and watery. Despite poor food and service. It was dirty. IMO the hot gravy ladled over everything is what makes the Bohemian pork and dumpling dishes sing. Czech food is the hardiest, most filling food in the world. Everything comes with some sort of potatoes and gravy. The breaded pork was fantastic. Good reports on the duck, too (but I didn't try it). Staff are super friendly. Its a shame that not too many places like this around anymore. read more

We tried this place for the first time last night for our Friday night carryout & weren't disappointed. The lady who answered the phone, Lynn, was extremely helpful since we didn't have the menu in front of us and I hadn't been there before. I arrived a little early, and she was very accommodating to me, with all my questions. We all ordered the breaded pork tenderloin & were very happy w/it. The liver dumpling & goulash soup were excellent as well. I'm sure we'll be back again and we'll probably try roast pork, duck or smoked butt. Looking forward to trying it again soon read more

They won't do separate checks and were very rude. We were bringing in a large party. We ate elsewhere, at a friendlier restaurant.

There were days, once, where you couldn't swing a sock full of onions and not hit a Czech resto in the near west Burbs of Chicago (Particularly Berwyn and Cicero). Now there are only 2. The great Westchester Restaurant and this place here, which has just phoenix'ed under new owners. On an especially un-scenic stretch of Joliet Road (it's primarily an industrial area--there's a jolly big Chemical plant across the street) the building puts forth a valiant effort to look inviting. Luckily, they've put their efforts into the kitchen. Ignore the Circuses, come for the Bread. You enter into a nice neighborhood-style bar. But I'll bet your neighborhood doesn't have Pilsner Urquell on tap, or other Czech Beers and liquors. I've been off the beer for a while, but even I can't pass up a cold stein of the defining Pilsner. Let's EAT! You'll find the sons of Berwyn and Cicero who would never touch Liver and Onions lap up Liver Dumpling Soup like it was Mothers Milk. If you're not from here "Liver Dumpling Soup" has the same appetizing impetus as "Anchovies" or "Head Cheese" ( I Love both of those, too). But trust me, Liver Dumpling Soup is a savory masterpiece, and it's particularly good from this kitchen. Perfect to eat with the home-made Bohemian Rye Bread on the table--a tad lighter here than at other Czech joints, but still great. It's Pork and more pork for entrees. Kinda like the Monty Python "spam" routine, but for real. Unless you swing with the Duck, which, in a Czech joint of any merit, is ALWAYS sublime, as it is here. No joke, I ordered it in a combo with a piece of breaded Pork Tenderloin. Both proteins were absolutely delicious. They put pitchers of great gravy on the table-one for every 2 people. The duck/pork is so good, I don't even apply it--waiting to soak down the dumplings I tend to after the proteins are demolished. You get a choice of Sauerkraut or Cabbage with your meal, and I always get both. Yum. Full disclosure--if you're not of adventurous palate, you can get other soups, other veggies and potatoes as sides, but hell, when in Rome... There are other entrees I haven't tried here, but I'll bet they are commensurate with the "greatest hits". A dessert of Kolacky (Czech pastries) is included in the modest prices-great with a coffee and a shot of Becher (a Czech herbal after-dinner tonic) It's casual eats, and the service is home-y as you might suspect. Full disclosure--this is not "light eating"- Not quite the gut bomb of a full German feed, but "stick to the ribs" for sure. If you're in the mood for "Home cooking"-this place is for you! read more

Last of a dying breed of restaurants i grew up with. The entire menu is savory. Fried, heavy on meat, heavy on bread. Traditional food from a forgotten time period. Breaded pork tenderloin is the best here. Along with their select soups that are hardy. Nothing here is going to blow your palate away, but you will leaved stuffed and satisfied. Service struggles because they need to hire more. Ambiance is traditional polish/czech plain drab style. The bar is nice and is cheap. I go here a couple of times s month. read more
