This week I am making a concentrated effort to sample the mobile food stands I see around town due to their nationwide resurgence in popularity. In a struggling economy good food for little money is a notion we can all get used to. I even think that a revitalization of the barren Broadway strip from downtown to the Pearl Brewery might include, among other things, a block of mobile specialty lunch wagons like the ones they have along SOCO in Austin. Mix in some galleries, boutiques, hotels, restaurants, playhouse, trolley line, etc and we may bring that part of town back to life. Get me a city planner! Enough about my lofty ambitions let's talk shaved ice. The Sno Shack sits outside the HEB Plus on Potranco just south of 1604 and prepares good ol' fashioned raspas. Plenty of flavor combinations to choose from poured over freshly shaved ice ready to melt upon the tongue. True it may be nothing more than a snow cone but who among us can deny the nostalgia factor of the raspa truck outside the public swimming pool refreshing our sore muscles with a suicide cone and Chinese candy. Maybe it's because I recently went to another shaved ice place and it was completely different than my experience here. 1)The girl who prepared my shaved ice didn't even pack my ice down so as she pour the room temperature syrup over the ice all the ice nearly dissolved 2) she poured Heb heavy whipping cream on top of the shaved ice. So it gave all the drinks this strange flavor oppose to it being actual sweet cream. 3) after she charged my card and gave me my drinks the girl just said bye. I had to ask her to text the receipt to me. I'm so sad I wasted my money at this place. I would never recommend anyone to go here. I would rather travel all the way to 1604 & culebra to the awesome shaved ice place that I tried a couple of days earlier.
