The history of it is fascinating…read more It's pretty easy to navigate with plenty of directional signs and an employee at the main desk who is happy to help. The rotunda alone is fabulous. There's a cafeteria with plenty of options and a stand alone coffee bar as well. If you don't take the time to go inside you are definitely missing out. The grounds are also beautiful with a stunning fountain that may be dyed for certain months - aka pink for breast cancer awareness. There's plenty of parking options nearby. An absolute must see if you're in the area.

Be sure to check their website to reserve a spot. After entering through the Rotunda area on North 3rd Street you will have to go through a TSA-style metal detector. You can then wait in that area for your tour to begin. There are bathrooms and a coat rack in this area if needed. Our tour guide was great. She took us through the building, offering some interesting facts of the different sections: main rotunda, House of Reps, Senate an Supreme Court. Photography is allowed but video is NOT. Great experience. Highly recommended to all visiting the area.

My group did the guided tour, had a fantastic time, and learned a lot. We walked up to the front desk a few minutes before 11 am on a Friday and asked if there were any tours going on, and within a few minutes, we had our own private tour. So cool! This was the 9th annual M&T Bank Ice & Fire Festival, held on Saturday, March 7 from 11am-7pm. The free event featured more than 60 large and small ice sculptures placed throughout the city along with a downtown street festival that included a giant ice slide, fire dancers, live ice carving demonstrations, fire pits with s'mores, live performances, kids activities, food trucks, and an artist market with local makers. The sculptures were scattered along the downtown festival path and extended out to locations like City Island, Midtown, Italian Lake, Shipoke, and Reservoir Park. Starting at 5pm, the sculptures were illuminated for the evening crowd. One thing the City did particularly well was helping visitors plan ahead for parking. Their website listed a wide variety of parking options in advance, which made it easy to gameplan before heading into the city. I ended up finding an excellent parking spot on City Island overlooking the river, which was honestly a surprise. I had expected parking to be chaotic, but there were actually plenty of spots available when I arrived. That immediately gave me hope that the festival might not be as overwhelmingly crowded as I had anticipated. One of the activities I was most excited about was the ice sculpture scavenger hunt. Participants could scan QR codes located at each sculpture to enter for a chance to win gift cards and prize baskets from local businesses. There were supposedly around 60 sculptures total across the city, but not all were within walking distance. I ended up visiting 23 sculptures, happily darting from sculpture to sculpture scanning codes and submitting entries along the way. The event also offered free s'mores kits at the top of every hour, and I happened to be near the distribution tent right when they were handing them out, so I grabbed one to bring home. A nice little bonus. I also spent some time browsing through the vendor areas set up throughout the festival. There was a great mix of local makers, artists, and small businesses participating, and it was fun to stop and chat with a few vendors and support some of the local offerings while I was there. The variety of vendors added a nice element to the festival experience and made it feel like more than just a walk-through event. One of the nicest surprises of the day was that the festival wasn't nearly as crowded as I expected. I was able to move around comfortably, see plenty of sculptures, visit vendors, and enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed or stuck in massive crowds. This was my first time attending the Ice & Fire Festival, and honestly it ended up being one of the better organized and thoughtfully laid out events I've attended in Harrisburg in quite a while. The scavenger hunt was a particularly fun way to explore the city and gave the whole event an interactive feel. Yes, it was cold -- but walking from sculpture to sculpture kept me warm. I also felt perfectly safe exploring the festival by myself and had zero anxiety even with the crowds. All in all, this was a really fun way to spend a chilly early-March afternoon in the city, and the Ice & Fire Festival has definitely earned a spot on my list of events to attend again next year!

One of the two essential city bridges connecting downtown Harrisburg with the west shore, this…read morecantilever structure provides 4 lanes of vehicular traffic and two outside lanes for pedestrians and bicycles. Speed limit is 50 but everyone knows you can go as fast as you want across this bad boy. It's a nice looking structure with solid construction and is used by numerous vehicles every day. It's in great shape following a renovation and painting about 15 years ago and should last for many more generations.

The Taylor bridge was completed in 1952 and then widened between 2001 and 2004. It is a steel…read moregirder bridge over the Susquehanna River and it connects downtown Harrisburg with the West Shore. The bridge is named for a politician who served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1941 to 1964 including President pro tempore from 1945 to 1964. He was Acting Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania for a short period in January 1947 under circumstances that are confusing to me but would make sense if I spent more time on research. Interestingly, the bridge was named for the man by a 49-0 vote (Taylor abstained) of the Pennsylvania Senate. There are other bridges nearby including the one to the north that carries I-81 and the one to the south that carries I-83. The Walnut Street Bridge goes to City Island. You can't really imagine a more beautiful sight in downtown Harrisburg, than these stunning bridges crossign the river. This is one of the beautiful old bridges that spans this gorgeous stretch of water. The cool thing is, this is a pedestrian bridge! How awesome is that? I bet you didn't even think those existed in the US. It no longer crosses the river because portions collapsed in 96 due to flooding, and it was never restored. Now it's open to pedestrians, basically as a long pier on either side.

The nearby marker reads, "This statue, plaza and site perpetually commemorate the past and present dedication,s kill and contribution o the men and women of the fire service of The City of Harrisburg and of this Commonwealth and Nation."
