I refrained from reviewing Tabac after my first visit. Mainly because I ordered the flat iron steak which was cooked absolutely beautifully, but came with a massive dollop of herby butter on top. I cannot do butter. It makes me have some weird reaction where my throat constricts and I make a clicking sound! Anyway... as it didn't say it was topped with butter on the menu I was a bit peeved but scraped it off and ate around the contaminated areas! Now that I've moved on I can review them fairly. Today I wanted to try the chicken salt fries. They came highly recommended by Briony C and I really wanted to see what the fuss was about from the other glowing reviews. I ordered these as a side to a cheeseburger that came with a bacon jam. Burger Meats Bun have previously guided me down the path of enlightenment that is bacon jam so I was happy to see it on the menu. The food today was fab. The bun wasn't toasted so it lacked a bit of integrity - i.e. it fell apart and left me a mess! - but that's the price you pay for a good burger, eh? The very generous portion of chicken salt fries were crazy good. Crispy, salty and with loads of meaty flavour, which was so unexpected. Definitely right up there with some of the most awesome fries I've tried. Tabac itself is quite dark on the inside and if you're using it for a work space I recommend you grab a spot near the window. It's quiet during the day though, tucked away in Mitchell Lane just across from The Lighthouse, so you can work away quite happily without too much interuption. They have a couple of old cigarette machines on the wall, but look closely. Those cigarette machines are actually fish tanks! Such a cool touch. I'm so glad I reserved judgement on Tabac and I'm even happier I came back today and tried those salt fries. Next time I visit I'd like to come when it's a bit busier and see what the evening/night atmosphere is like.

Quick update: I totally get it now! One of the prime reasons I loved Bar 10, was because it's where weekly date night with the Mr started. So what better way to give Tabac a second outing, than to have this week's date night here. I now get where they're going with the refurb. We went in last night after work, and it was pretty busy; most of the tables were taken. There were a few groups, but it was mainly couples - we ended up sat beside a first date (so cute BTW). On a cold, wet night, Tabac makes for a really cosy, intimate place to go. The rubbish launch night music has now reverted to Bar 10's modern, easy listening, background rock playlists. And it totally works. The food that was being served looked and smelled awesome - and the service was very attentive. I had a closer look at their spirits shelving - big selection of whiskies, rums, and no less than 19 different gins! There are about a dozen beers on draft - all being poured in schooners - and priced accordingly. And an awesome, swanky, shiny new coffee machine. This is still not a weekend or sunny outside kind of bar for me, but I'll happily go there and chill during the week. Bring on next week's date night!

Hidden away down Mitchell Lane, just off Buchanan Street in Glasgow's city centre, is a cool and quirkly little bar called Tabac. This was the location of my first ever official Yelp event, a newbies night organised by Briony C. After quick introductions we got to ordering. A selection of small plates to share was ordered from a menu involving a few unusual items - "ancient grains" anyone? Smoked eel croquettas? Don't be alarmed, everything was delicious. I think the smoked eel croquettas were actually my favourite, although the scallops and the roasted carrot make it very difficult to decide for sure. I'll just have to go back and try everything again. I also ordered a particularly smooth and creamy panna cotta which I can strongly recommend. Tabac isn't a huge bar. It's cosy, intimate and dimly lit. The decor is trendy and stylised. You feel like you're sitting somewhere very deliberately and carefully designed, and it really works. I could imagine bringing a date here if I wanted to impress them with how cool I am. The music also really worked for me; think anything between Talking Heads and Depeche Mode, if that makes any kind of sense. I notice that the bar is very well stocked and that they have a range of cocktails available including a proper Margarita - not a strawberry Margarita, not a passionfruit Margarita, not a sodding Irn Bru Margarita, but a real, honest to goodness, proper Margarita. I'll be to drink it soon enough. It also looks like they have a decent range of beers on draft and the white wine we ordered was delicious. I understand that they offer a few express lunch options too. I think this would be the ideal spot to stop at for lunch, perhaps after a wander around the Lighthouse, just a little further up Mitchell Lane. I'd be very interested to see if the atmosphere changes at all during the day.

Tabac rises from the smokey ashes of Bar 10, which bowed out gracefully earlier this year after many years the stalwart of the city's bar scene, since its 1980's birth as Glasgow's original style bar. Significantly remodelled, the venue is reinventing itself as an "Illicit drinking den" rather than airy café-bar which preceded it. My friends and I visited on the opening night, the smell of fresh paint hung in the air, and there was a frantic slightly chaotic buzz, as you'd hope on first night. First impressions were good - dark interior, frosted glass windows, giant space-age light fixtures and an air of hip coolness. We ordered three pale ales, schooner size (2/3 pints) which came to around £8 - no freebies from the bar on opening night for us unfortunately! We took a seat at a small table on the long bench seats adjacent to the bar - a tricky tight space, where previously there high bar-tables and stools. Very soon there were a selection of tasty samples from the kitchen circulating; breaded fish balls, slider burgers, and so on. Yum. Taking time to take in the surroundings, I was impressed by the gamble of the remodelling. But I couldn't help think that the frosted windows were a style-step too far. Mitchell lane has a fair footfall, so people watching from inside was a plus in the old bar, sadly the frosted windows put an end to that. In the summer the windows open, but our west coast climate doesn't give too many days for flinging the windaes open. The opaque doors and windows might also be off-putting to passers-by and tourists visiting The Lighthouse directly opposite. A small issue, and resolvable if it proves a problem. I'll update my review after I've been back, once the buzz of the bar opening has passed, and hopefully go into a bit of detail about of the food and drinks on offer. So for now, Its a neutral 3*, which I hope to up soon. Good luck with the new venture!

I visited Tabac last night for the first time for the Yelp Newbies Night. This was my first visit but, after having a lovely night in a great atmosphere, I'll definitely be back. The bar itself is a cool, relaxed space - dimly lit with striking features, including the neon red signs (I appreciated the humour of drinks after work with a 'Please God Make Tomorrow Better' sign above our heads!), bold disco ball lights and enormous portrait of Uma Merkel on the back wall. I liked that it was offbeat and cool, but didn't feel "try hard" at all. We ordered a selection of small plates for the table to share. As a vegetarian I didn't try the unusual meat options - I believe there is foie gras and eel on the menu! - but I was happy to see that Tabac clearly make an effort to ensure the meat-free options are never boring. With roasted vegetables cooked and seasoned to perfection (I appreciate the beauty of a well-roasted carrot), as well as a variety of salads with unexpected quirks in flavour (including, for example, a green salad with crispy kale, and lime flavouring, and a cous cous salad with pomegranate seeds mixed through) I was pleasantly surprised and stuffed by the end of the meal. We also ordered a couple of portions of chips - while I didn't try them, Briony, our Australian host, was delighted to find chicken salt chips on the menu! From the 'mmm's!' and 'ahhh's' around the table, I think the meat options went down well too! I'd also like to mention the staff who were so friendly and helpful - from the waitress who happily served us and made sure we were well looked after, to the friendly bar staff (who even provided us with a pair of scissors when we had a bit of a situation with one sheet of cupcake stickers between three Yelpers!), they really added to the relaxing environment of Tabac. I will definitely visit again - from a great place to go for dinner, to just hanging out over drinks, I recommend Tabac as your new favourite place on Mitchell Lane.

It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.

Well, they did give us a splendiferous spread with copious plates of delicious food to try. In January they had a Winter Sale on with some meals available at £4 and £5 so decided to take advantage of this with my bestie and fellow Yelper Angela B. As a result I ended up with a taste tantalising wee mac and cheese topped with bacon bits including a wee bucket of chips. Not bad for a fiver. Boom! I've also frequented for drinks and they have an excellent bar selection, there's even some cheeky fruit beers in there. Yay! I would highly recommend popping in for a wee swally or a sit down meal within the designated dinning area. It's pretty, it's relaxing and the music is pretty good with some 90's indie beats to tickle your ear drums. Other music probably plays at other times. It's also bang smack right in the middle of town so super handy but ladies beware of the icy blast of the hand-drier in the toilets. Ice burns beware! Please note, not in the Urban Dictionary sense. I opted for the taster plank - 1 third of a pint of three different ales, served in a plank with the beer names written on. That in itself is a great touch, a few places don't identify which beer is which. I had a Casear Augustus from Williams Brothers, a Fake Lager from Brewdog and a Witless IV from Red Willow Brewery - as you can see, there's a great range to choose from and the staff were really helpful and knowledgeable about them all. While I was looking around and supping my drinks (the Witless was the pick of the bunch, fact fans!) I noticed the menu. I knew that The Raven were offering food, but wasn't too sure what. Looking at the menu, it looked pretty nifty so I figured I'd just eat here, and I was glad I did! The food is BBQ based - low and slow smoked pork, burgers, ribs, that sort of thing. There's been an explosion of this kind of food in Glasgow recently, I perhaps lay the blame at the feet of Adam Richman and Man vs. Food (my dream job too, it has to be said) but I'm not complaining! I opted for a pulled pork burrito with a side of spicy cheesy fries, and at £9 for the two, it was a steal. They arrived quickly, the fries in a basket and the burrito served on a platter. I was given cutlery before the food arrived, and what looked like a carrying case full of sauces, salt, pepper, kitchen roll and a great sight, a wet wipe! A great thing to have when eating what is esssentially finger food! There wasn't a long wait at all for the food; The burrito was lovely, really filled to the brim and fresh - but the spicy cheesy fries were stunning. Covered in jalapenos, cheese and a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce, they were quickly devoured. I could honestly have had a second helping of those on their own. A great first impression here, not just for the great food, but for the really helpful and friendly staff, and the attention to detail that the whole place shows. It's somewhere that I can see me returning to time and time again.

It reminds me of like a Neapolitan shake ( heavy on the chocolate and strawberry and no vanilla ice cream ) with a crap ton of added fermented strawberries and maraschino cherries and maraschino cherry syrup . If I was the chef I'd tweak this by adding a rum flambé banana slice or just banana in general would be so nice .
