Slow as heck. No sense of urgency whatsoever and they'll get your order wrong too. Avoid at all costs.

Great Service, But a West Coast Palate Had Trouble Adjusting…read more My husband and I decided to try Rustic Taco Bar during Canal Days, hoping for a taste of our former home on the West Coast. First off, I want to give a huge shout-out to the staff. The service was truly great--super friendly and attentive, especially considering how busy it was during the festival. We really appreciated how welcoming they were. However, we found the food to be a bit of a culture shock for our palates. We understand there are regional differences, and for us, this was very different from the Mexican food we're used to. The tacos were served on flour tortillas that, since they weren't freshly made, could have really benefited from being heated or toasted on the grill to give them a better texture and taste. The biggest surprise for us was the filling. We've learned that "beef" on the East Coast often means ground beef, which was very odd for us in a taco, as we were expecting carne asada. It brought back memories of childhood taco nights rather than the street tacos we know and love. The salsa was just okay; for us, it was really missing that punch of salt and a fresh squeeze of lime juice that makes a salsa pop. Overall, the people were wonderful, but the food just didn't quite hit the mark for our West Coast tastes. If you're not used to SoCal-style Mexican food, you might enjoy this more than we did. For us, it was a reminder that we're a long way from San Diego!

The tacos here are unique with a garbage plate taco, steak frites taco among others. They don't skimp on the the size or fillings for the tacos which I guess warrants the higher price per taco. You shouldn't leave hungry which I love. Overall the food was good. I had the steak frites and whiskey barrel bbq taco. Both were very good and my wife had the rustic beer fry(fish) taco and mango marg taco. 2 downsides that pushed me from a 4 to a 3. We ordered the elote corn side dish. It came out as corn on the cob which is not practical for dining out given the amount of toppings. We managed to cut a bunch off and the flavor was great but a mess. The other was a takeout order that we were bringing home for our daughter. It was entirely incorrect and the items we got were about 1/2 the price of what we ordered. We didn't realize until we were home staring in the face of disappointment and refusal to eat what we delivered from our daughter. That said I would still go back, but lesson learned on the corn and takeout.

I love a good burrito. I couldn't get over the different temps in my burrito. The carnitas were warm and piping and the rice was refrigerator cold. It was an odd mix and even with traveling to Mexico, I haven't experienced two extreme differences in temp inside the burrito. We ordered chips and guacamole AND chips and salsa. Our order came out with 1 basket of chips and then when we asked about the chips for the guacamole, we were charged for the chips. It's odd. It literally says on the menu that chips come with both items. We were there with family so the intention was to split the appetizers. The house margarita was phenomenal and my son said his tacos were great. It's a miss this time for us. The location is gorgeous.

My takeout burrito was huge and the chips were great (not greasy). They are thicker than the chips at many area Mexican restaurants and held guac without snapping. When I ate there, I got a burrito bowl and the portion was equally big. There isn't any spice, so you will need to add hot sauce to your liking - red and green sauce were on the table for dine in lunch. The renovation of the space is impressive, featuring tropical print chairs, a colorful chandelier, and a light up palm tree. You can't even tell this was a diner.

We went on a Wednesday night so the restaurant was empty aside from our party of 5 which was nice. The server was absolutely great and provided valuable menu recommendations! We tried a rice ball sampler and also shared a platter of deep fried oreos I ordered chicken tacos because it was recommended to me as a smaller portioned meal. The rest of my party ordered burritos and they were huge! We were all pleased with our dinner. The only downside is the location as it's not in the best area of town. There are some designated lots down the street for parking as well as street parking.

By far the worst Mexican food I think I've ever had... or maybe the worst service... or both…read more We got there after a movie across the street around 3:45. Place was empty. We waited to be seated. Sat in the back area. Waited about 4 minutes for a venue. THEY only serve Pepsi products so I ordered water. The server appeared to be annoyed woth my water and lemon order. My friend got a Pepsi. Chips were average but fine but the salsa was bitter and tasteless and very watery. Tasted like the juice from a can of stewed tomatoes. Took 10 minutes to come back for the order. She didn't greet us ; just stood there with her pad and waited for us to order. Weird. We ordered a shredded chicken nachos to share. She rolled her eyes when I said to share and asked if "thats it?". Then left without a word. Rude doesn't even come close to what an awful server she was. Took 15 minutes for horrible nachos. Cold shredded chicken and very little of it, wilted shredded lettuce, white American cheese!!! Gross! Who has white American cheese on nachos??? And canned tasteless jalapeños. The tomatoes were pithy and tasted grain like they were old. More chips than toppings. I had to ask for a water refill. She just snatched it off the table and brought it back full. No words. She never came back to check on us or ask if we needed anything or if everything was okay. Not once. She dropped off the check and again said nothing but seemed annoyed. Awful experience. Yuck. Absolutely won't ever go again nor recommend.
