Great Service, But a West Coast Palate Had Trouble Adjusting…read more My husband and I decided to try Rustic Taco Bar during Canal Days, hoping for a taste of our former home on the West Coast. First off, I want to give a huge shout-out to the staff. The service was truly great--super friendly and attentive, especially considering how busy it was during the festival. We really appreciated how welcoming they were. However, we found the food to be a bit of a culture shock for our palates. We understand there are regional differences, and for us, this was very different from the Mexican food we're used to. The tacos were served on flour tortillas that, since they weren't freshly made, could have really benefited from being heated or toasted on the grill to give them a better texture and taste. The biggest surprise for us was the filling. We've learned that "beef" on the East Coast often means ground beef, which was very odd for us in a taco, as we were expecting carne asada. It brought back memories of childhood taco nights rather than the street tacos we know and love. The salsa was just okay; for us, it was really missing that punch of salt and a fresh squeeze of lime juice that makes a salsa pop. Overall, the people were wonderful, but the food just didn't quite hit the mark for our West Coast tastes. If you're not used to SoCal-style Mexican food, you might enjoy this more than we did. For us, it was a reminder that we're a long way from San Diego!

The food was good too- I got a pork belly taco and my mom got a crispy taco. My only feedback is that the food took a really, really long time to come out. We got our tacos almost an hour after we sat down, and we didn't order appetizers. I do recommend this place if you want to eat outside in theVillage of Fairport, especially with friends!

While every restaurant has its own style, quality ingredients and careful preparation are what make great Mexican food. Unfortunately, despite its exceptional location on the Erie Canal in the charming village of Fairport, NY, this restaurant fell well short of those expectations. The queso fundido appeared to be made with inexpensive processed cheeses, which resulted in an overly oily dish. The chorizo quesadilla was disappointing as well. The chorizo tasted like a low-quality, filler-heavy product with an artificial heat rather than the rich, well-seasoned flavor you'd expect. The tacos were average but didn't stand out in any way. Service was friendly throughout the evening, but our server wasn't very familiar with the menu and couldn't answer several questions about the dishes. Despite having a reservation, the meal took nearly two hours from start to finish. Our bill came to about $60 for two adults with no alcohol, and based on the overall experience, it didn't represent a good value. The restaurant's greatest asset is unquestionably its location. Sitting along the Erie Canal is a wonderful experience, and Fairport is one of the most charming villages in the Rochester area. I genuinely hope the kitchen elevates the quality of the food to match such an exceptional setting.

I moved here…read moreafter 20+ yrs in California where food truck tacos are not only a staple, but an edible art form that is both approachable and cherished. Here, the food is never prepared in an overly curated-for-Instagram-but-empty-inside kind of way, but rather with a focus on simple ingredients prepared with care in a slow-food way that emphasizes their deep, rich flavor. My favorite is the Al pastor taco with pineapple, a combo of guacamole and chipotle salsas, with fried cheese added on top of the diced onions and cilantro. To die for!! And still only $5 each. This afternoon, after eating literally hundreds of their tacos over the last few years, I tried their smash burger. Absolutely outstanding! Might be the best burger in town as well, it's honestly that good. And only $10! A few weeks ago I had a burger from a local restaurant for $20, which seems to be the going rate, and it paled in comparison to their oh!-so-tasty-you-can't-stop-licking-your-fingers burger! And if you ask, they'll customize it for you with a fried egg, or in my case, with lots of extra fried onions. Their torta sandwiches have also garnered a cult following due to their packed ingredients and massive size, still just for $14. If you're lucky, in the warmer months Eduardo might be serving some of his delicious aqua frescas, or even better, some of his incredible lemonade beverages. Sooooo refreshing! The bonus: you get to hang out with these cool and friendly guys Eduardo & Carlos, as well as their friendly staff who work so hard to make your food so delicious. This place is truly an Ithaca treasure! And more good news: they just moved (May 2026) from Press Bay Alley (118 W Green St) to Press Bay Court (114 W Green St), where they now offer plenty of indoor seating, a big improvement over the old place that only had room for a handful of people at a time. Their outdoor seating has grown as well, and the overall ambiance is more festive and fun. Do yourself a favor - go get some of those mouth-watering tacos, and definitely try the smash burger!

Alternatively, fillings with chicken, pork, or beef can be substituted but are similarly priced. The $5 tacos are the biggest hit by most people, who also have to always wait in line to order. Although exceptionally clean, the ambiance should have included better lighting and some Mexican music played over speakers. Additionally, the choices of bottle beverages were limited - they lacked a self-serve soda machine. Viva Mexico Tacos CDMX

Sadly, on this visit they did not have any tamales, but my food was still delicious! I opted to get a surf & turf taco (shrimp & barbacoa) and the governador (shrimp with grill onions). There is a bar with a selection of toppings for your tacos including cilantro, pico, hot sauce, pickled onions & more. It also has toppings for burgers/dogs if you went that way. My food was hot, fresh & satisfying. The service was friendly. There is a lot of covered & uncovered outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. They also have a playground and some hammocks. It is a very nice setting to enjoy your food. One if these days I'm gonna get some ice cream too! I will definitely be back to The Taco Place... Hopefully to enjoy some tamales! :)
