I used to love it here! Food was amazing, however, the last year and a half I have found a thick hair (NOT my hair) not once, not twice, but THREE separate occasions. First two times I let it go. Sorry, but a third time? This is just unacceptable. They said they'd remake for me and likely take off my bill but then said bc they remade it so they can't. In this case I would've said forget it. I already felt grossed out anyway so my appetite was meh. The waitress even said they should refund me (for my whole $8 meal) and she offered out of HER pay. I said absolutely NOT. We stopped in recently per suggestion of my wonderful niece. The food was okay. I had the salad with shrimp. The shrimp were fresh off the grill and seasoned to perfection, however the taco salad was lacking some flavor/toppings. The queso was awesome, but small for price. Drinks were a hit. This place is cute. It's decorated with a Mexican theme. Love all the colors. Came here on a Thursday at 5 and got sat right away. It got busy while I was there, which I'm not surprised because the food was really good. They gave us chips and salsa to start. I ordered the Baja tacos, which was my first time trying shrimp in my tacos. I usually get fish. Funny because our server messed up and gave me fish tacos, it looked really good so I wasn't going to say anything and just eat that but the owner came over with my correct dish. It was good, it had so many toppings rice, black beans, cabbage, pico de gallo, cheese and chipotle dressing.. everything on it went so good together, the shrimp were big and the tacos were filled. Me and my 2 year old daughter came in for dinner on a Monday. It wasn't busy at all. Everyone was very nice and attentive. They have nice Spanish music playing. I ordered a jalapeño margarita (don't worry we had swim classes next door after). The margarita was delicious!! The chips and salsa were complimentary. The salsa appeared to be homemade and it was equally delicious. The staff appeared to be fluent in Spanish which gave it an authentic vibe. The decorations were beautiful inside. All the Mexican, all the time. My nachos (making it supreme gets you lettuce and a few extra toppings) were really good. I had asked for half ground beef and half chicken. They put both all over the whole thing. Who's complaining? Not me! The beef was well-seasoned and the chicken was that bland shredded chicken Mexican places love to serve. Had a different taco Tuesday experience recently, we were told it's now 5 for 5 and you can't mix hard or soft, chicken or beef. We were a bit disappointed with this. It's fun to mix it up a little. It's possible our waitress gave us wrong information. Not super confident on what the taco Tuesday special is anymore :/ they're technically still only $1 but if you have to buy five of the same that's a little different. They were also out of quite a few beer choices listed on the menu which was a bummer but could be a covid result, just wish the menu had maybe been updated or a note mentioned. Last nights order consisted of: 1-Carnitas Fajitas 1-Chicken Burritos Supremos 1-Steak Burrito Mesquite 1-Chiles Poblanos (one chicken 1 beef) 1-Flautas 1-churros Blanket agreement across all meals is that all dishes were extremely bland, lacking flavor. Beans were puréed and resembled baby food. The most disappointing was the Chiles Poblanos where the Chiles were large but had minimal filling. Had lunch in this Mexican restaurant. As soon as you enter the dining section, it feels like you are in Mexico. The decorations, the colors, the music, the smell takes your breath away. The staff was friendly. Our waiter introduced himself was knowledgeable about the menu, the ingredients used, the favorite dishes and was happy to assist and take care of us. They brought tortilla chips and they were crispy and warm. I ordered carnitas/rice/beans/tamal and everything was just delicious and full of flavors that worked and interact perfect with each other. I have to say that the black beans tasted just like Cuban beans (maybe their chef is Cuban ). They lost one star because the tamal was not good at all, it tasted like it was frozen and not fresh, it had lots of cheese on top of it which tells me someone was trying to hide something. This place is amazing! Some of the best Mexican food I've had in Rochester. I'm very excited that Gates has a place like this now. The inside of the restaurant is smaller and the tables are close together, so I can imagine it gets pretty crowded on a busy night. I visited on a Thursday night for dinner and it was busy but not overly crowded. We were seated right away. I loved the bright, colorful decor. The staff was incredibly friendly and our server was the perfect amount of attentive. The chips and salsa that were brought out were great, but I wish there were more chips. I'm sure they would have given us more if we asked, but when we finished them our entrees were already out. I had the Sopa de Pollo (chicken soup) as an appetizer and it was one of the best soups I have ever had. It's pricier at $6.99 for a small-ish bowl, but it is SO worth it. The broth was slightly spicy, there was a ton of chicken, and the pico and avocado were perfect complements. I had the chilequiles for my entree and they were so good. Tons of melted cheese on top of perfectly seasoned pulled chicken. The tortillas got a little soggy, but there's not much you can do about that considering all the cheese and sauce on the chicken. Love this place! My new favorite restaurant! As soon as you walk in you feel right at home, such cute cozy environment. A smaller restaurant that they decorated so nicely for a Mexican feel. They also play really authentic Mexican music which ads to the ambiance. The food was BOMB!!! The menu was extensive with a lot of great options to choose from. I ordered Flutas which came an order of four and a huge side of rice and beans. They were delicious! The refried beans were the best, a spicy hint. My mom got the taco salad and she loved it as well. We just missed the lunch specials, but they did offer a 5 taco for $5 deal that was surprisingly good. We also had the margaritas, burrito, and tamale. Marg was decent, burrito was smaller than expected (more like an enchilada), and the tamale tasted old. Recommend the pork over their other meat option fillings, which was very moist and delicious. Everyone got a complimentary bowl of soup to start, which was a nice touch - it was OK. The salsa with the chips lacked flavor but they did the trick in tiding me over until the entree arrived. I ordered the enchilada, stuffed poblano and rice combo. Overall it was solid but not exceptional. The service was quick which was good since it was lunch. I was surprised when the waitress did not ask about separate checks given it is a business lunch place - so she had to redo the bill. My wife and I are always on the lookout for good Mexican food in this area. This list has been pitifully short. But good news, the Mesquite Grill has moved to the top of the list. We had been to the place when it had been a yogurt shop and the remodel is very good. It's not loaded down with the typical kitschy decor, it's refreshingly different. There's a bar area and a well-appointed dining area. The staff is friendly and helpful. Servings are just right to fill but not overfill. The menu has a wide variety of dishes to choose from. My wife and I had the same basic lunches with just enough difference to sample each others. We were both VERY pleased and look forward to returning. We had been told that the place was "pricy", but we found that wasn't the case at all. There's a sizable patio for outdoor dining in warmer weather. I know that we will be going there during the Summer months, just because it's so damn good. If you're looking for good Mexican food, DO NOT overlook the Mesquite Grill.
