Ok was looking for some authentic Mexican food. We observed this place and had to try it. The building is a little old but don't let that fool you. The place is clean and so are the restrooms. Anyways was immediately sat down and the waiter took our orders. The pictures on the wall are pretty amazing if you don't know what you want to eat. Anyways it was cold and raining so I ordered a bowel of menudo. The menudo soup was delicious with plenty of protein. I had a large bowl and was very pleased. Stopped by after they reopened and ordered at front counter. No one there which is not a good sign. Ordered steak fajita tacos and large quesadilla with chicken. They said wait outside, and it was a 12 minute wait, lot of flies for some reason. Well it was worth the wait : the tacos were regular size and lots of meat but no lettuce or cheese, the large chicken quesadilla was good sized with good taste. Okay back to try again and found they had changed. Prices were higher and they went to the mini taco and one corn tortilla each. A lot more onions than beef and much smaller than last time. I guess I'll go to tacos lupita they have regular size and 2 tortillas per taco. read more

The food was very regular, nothing to write home about and the up charge was insane! A hamburgesa mexicana, a small order of tacos, a botana for one and 4 teas cost us $53. The only memorable item was the salsa served with the chips. Granted we were grateful that this restaurant was open and that we could sit down and eat during this time. Best Mexican food I've ever eaten. Ordered Camarones A La Diabla and Verde Pork taco. Authentic Hispanic with lots of flavor. Not really tex mex despite being advertised as so. Also very affordable with most plates under 10 dollars. Obviously Hispanic owned. Helps if you speak a little Spanish. read more

What a cute little roadside taco stand. I figured I needed a couple of street tacos, so all I pulled into the huge dirt lot in front of the restaurant. If you speak Spanish it will serve you well here, and that's good, who better to cook Mexican food. They arevery kind and very helpful. I got the special taco plate, 2 tacos rice and beans. The tortillas just might have been homemade, they sure felt like it. The tacos were alright. The chips and salsa was nice. The salsa was a little wimpy. Not impressed AT ALL with this establishment. My wife and I live near the place, so we gave it a try. The enchiladas were small; the refried beans were like soup; they were stingy with their meal portions and their chips and salsa.....We will continue going to the El Ranchero for our Mexican food. Your meal at the El Ranchero (123 King Street, Nacogdoches, less than a block off North Street) will never be small and it will always be filling. They keep the chips and fabulous salsa coming as long as you want. Also, each guest gets two Margaritas FREE with their meal if they so desire. I do not wish harm or otherwise bad to the Taquarea, but we just made our first visit our last. read more

I ordered the food to go and everything was in order. Great customer service. I asked for extra lime and was given to me without hesitation or up charge. The food was overall very good. The mixed parrillada was delicious. Great rice and quacamole! The steak torta was huge and filling. The tacos de bistec were delicious and the salsa hit the spot. However, the tacos de pastor were tasty but dry. The beans were delicious even though I would have preferred bacon instead of sausage in the charro beans. I'm just being picky at this point. If you're looking for an authentic hole-in-the-wall place for Mexican breakfast, this is the one. It's family run, clean, cozy and well decorated. It's not glitzy and is a bit out of the way, up 259 north of Nacogdoches. They also serve lunch and dinner. By far the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. We are on our way back to Conroe and stopped here for lunch. Parking is a little difficult since there were a lot of cars out front. I ordered the burrito plate, and it was very good, fresh, and the rice is exactly the way I like it. Also ordered one chicken taco, and it was great. The waitress was nice and offered better options for my boyfriend since he likes spicy food. If we're ever back this way, we will for sure stop by. Right on the highway is this diminutive simple building that houses absolutely superb Hispanic food. What can you say about a place that makes their own tortillas, flour as well as corn, and everything else. We had the ubiquitous chips and salsa. The salsa was layered with flavor. It was a mix of fresh tomato with subtle use of spice and heat. Superb. I had a wonderful pork taco. The tortilla, flour, was slightly toasted. The pork had been stewed in a semi spicy gravy and was tender. Once again another mixture of balanced flavors. My wife had beef enchiladas with rice, simple lettuce salad and mashed beans. The rice was perfectly prepared with the slightly chew/nutty flavor I prefer. The corn tortillas were fresh and homemade. The beans were, apparently, a mix of pinto and black bean. Very soft and excellent on the chips. The food was reasonably priced and afterward I didn't feel grossly full. It is simple yet well put together Mexican/Hispanic fare. The tea was perfect by the way. For me the flavor of a restaurant's tea is the first test of quality and their tea was good. read more
