Sometimes the road of life takes you off your highlife beaten path and onto the side road of small town USA. Well here I am in Carthage, Mo broke down. I sent out a Yelp call for food and low and behold I'm at Taco Town. If you look at a majority of my posts, I like my Mexican food. This little place doesn't spice up their foods as I'm used to, but the tacos and burrito I had were tasty and delicious. If I'm ever back in town I'll be sure to stop back. FYI, the staff were very nice and I got my food quickly. And the prices compared to what I'm used to paying were in expensive. Thanks Taco Town Time to roll Eastbound. read more

Went into the restaurant expecting good tacos, and burritos as the person working the counter recommended the burritos. The meat in the tacos was not very good and not seasoned well. They burritos were not good at all. The salsa was flavorless. The value for the food was not very good as it was average price but more than Taco Bell. Will not go back again and not recommended. I've never been to Taco Town, but all the locals seem to rave about it. So my wife and i wanted tacos, so we thought we would give it a try. The tacos are cheap and good. There is plenty of meat and cheese and just the right amount of lettuce. The staff was very friendly and we got the good quickly. I'll be back for sure to try more things on the menu! read more

Sorry. I grew up with true Mexican/New Mexican food. Not impressed with this place. Kind of tasteless. It came highly recommended so I had to try it. I guess it's all about growing up with the place being "the place to go" in high school or your parents taking you there when you were a kid. We were in the area and was craving tacos. What was nice was the drive thru. I ordered the the cheese dip n chips and a deluxe tostado. I must say the line went really quick. I got my food and pulled around a secluded area and dug in. The food is really delicious I like how you could yell it was made that day and very fresh. Great service in the drive thru I got my napkins and fresh green salsa. Great stuff!!! read more

Previous reviewer is right, this is not authentic mexican food, however, it is very tasty unique interpretation of mexican food. This place opened up when I was in high school, many, many years ago, it was always very cheap and tasty, but not the cleanest place in town. The owner never seemed to want to keep it up and that was why I was impressed when I recently went back to Carthage for a family funeral and saw it had reopened and lo and behold, the new owners have remodeled and really cleaned the place up while still reserving the old charm of the place. I love the chili burrito's, the taco burgers and the chili enchiladas. Thanks for reopening and taking good care of the place! read more

Taco Town is back! The newly remodeled Carthage landmark has always had exceptional cheese dip. But now they have actually cleaned the place up! Only drive thru when I visited. But the burritos were as greasy and delicious as ever. Somehow, the Dr Pepper has always been a little sweeter.. With good ice. Carthage once again has a good place to eat! I like Taco Town. We got a family package to go and the gave us all the stuff to make tacos. They brought a large amount of food over to the ER one night while I was working (one of the ER Doctors paid for it). It is helpful that all the ingredients are separate so you can put it together as you want it. That also makes left overs last and taste better because you can choose what you want to heat up and keep other things like the Lettuce cold. The cheese dip is good, I like it. Until I heard what a friend from California thought of local Chinese cuisine, I never realized just how much regional variation there can be in ethnic restaurants as the tastes of local residents override those of the actual ethnicity from which it originates. The local "Mexican" fare is a great example of that, as some of the better-known restaurants in the area offer dishes with little more resemblance to "true" Mexican cuisine than you would find at a Taco Bell. That doesn't mean they're necessarily BAD--it just means that if you go in expecting to find authentic Mexican food, as reviewer R M apparently did, you're going to be disappointed. Taco Town is a great example of this "Zarks-Mex" style. It serves up tacos, burritos, taco salad, and other foods with a vague resemblance to their Mexican forebears, but at quite inexpensive prices that make it a cheap place to eat. First-time diners may be surprised to discover that it uses grated American cheese rather than real cheddar. The hot sauce on the table is more sweet than hot, as it seems that Ozarkians have a bit of a sweet tooth. Again, it's not bad if you go in expecting it, but anyone who wants "authentic" Mexican should look elsewhere (such as the nearby Dos Arcos). One innovation that Taco Town offers that I can't praise highly enough is that the ends of its crunchy tacos are pinched shut, making the taco into a sort of pocket closed at both ends. This is quite helpful, given that it means the filling is less likely to fall out the end while you're eating it. Another nice thing about the restaurant is that it provides free wi-fi to its diners. Given the choice between a place with wifi and a place without, I'll pick the place with, even if the food isn't as good. read more

What RC from Joplin said is right. Not real good food (certainly not Mexican) although the simple items like tacos and hot dogs/chili dogs are OK. I ordered nacho deluxe one time when it was on sale and they actually gave me nachos made without corn tortillas. It was a soggy, floury, tasteless mess. I had to throw it in the trash and it cost over $5. Be careful when eating here. PS. Later a friend told me I should say that I wanted corn tortillas but there is no such thing as flour tortilla nachos so.....shouldn't they tell me or ask me if they are going to make something nasty lol? This place is one of my favorites--and my six year old grandsons, too. They had a kitchen fire (a few months ago) and are open limited hours for now. Hopefully, they will be open for lunch time shortly. read more

Stopping in at Taco Town on our way to visit family in McDonald County has become a family tradition. For 20+ years we've been stopping in for the tasty tacos & nachos. We love that the ends of the tacos are pinched shut. So, take the sauce bottle, stick it in the taco and SQUEEZE! HINT: Put some taco sauce in your nacho cheese, too. It's awesome! read more

Personally I think Taco Town is a poor interpretation of Mexican food, kind of like the nachos you find at concession stands. However it's been in business for a very long time and has a strong cult following. The fact that this place went out of business and the community banded together to save it does say something, even if it seems totally absurd given the quality of the food. The food really is not good, but the restaurant does have a nostalgia to it. Unless your interest is simply to experience a Carthage tradition, I would suggest one of the numerous authentic Mexican places in town that actually serves Mexican food. read more

I've lived in the area for years but never stopped in at Taco Town until now. I'm wondering why it took me this long to try it! My boyfriend & I stopped in for a snack of veggie tacos and they were simple, beans, lettuce & cheese but everything seemed super fresh and it was delicious. Very mild, yummy sauce too. We had soda and tea and even the most basic beverages were better than average at Taco Town. If you're looking for an authentic Mexican taqueria, this is not your place. But if you just want tasty, affordable food...give it a try! The interior was much cleaner & more up to date than I expected, very comfortable. The young counter/kitchen staff were incredibly polite and efficient. It was one of those situations where I felt so well-served it seemed like a crime not to leave a tip (which is not expected here - it's counter service only). Very good stuff! read more

We were SO excited to find that someone had reopened the Taco Town in Carhage again! Our oldest son and now the youngest one has both made a trip to Carthage to see their Grandparents and found that Taco Town was reopened. They stopped in to check it out and even brought food back to Springfield for us. It is as AWESOME as it ever was when we lived in Carthage over about 22 years. Thank you for bringing it back. The girl who took my order was despicably rude and hateful and I wouldn't recommend eating here unless you want to be treated poorly.

Unless you grew up with Taco Town and are accustomed to their food, I don't think you'll enjoy it much. The cheese "dip" is moldable like play-dough and the taco meat was super greasy. Not a fan. read more
