    Steak a la mexicana
    Keith H.

Out of town traveling between the middle of nowhere Michigan and Grand Rapids when I pulled off the exit starving and desperate for a good meal. The pure luck of finding Tacos El Cunado makes me feel like I won the mega millions of Mexican food lotto. In a non-descript strip mall next to a gas station, I had the best Steak a la Mexican meal I've ever had. The steak was perfectly cut and cooked. The tomatoes, onions, and peppers that accompanied it were charred and spicy in the best way. The beans and rice were good, and the salsa and guacamole cooled my tongue slightly between bites. The corn and flour tortillas were steaming and plentiful. The horchata was cinnamon-y and huge! And the waitress was awesome as she handled six or seven rotating tables and several takeout orders with ease and a smile. Do yourself a favor and go support this new spot!

Always a good experience. The new favorite is the pork tacos with pineapple and the green salsa!

Sue's Kountry Kitchen: A Breakfast Adventure in Cedar Springs. If Cedar Springs had its own cozy…read morespace station, it would be Sue's Kountry Kitchen. Sitting right in the middle of town at 12 N 1st St, this diner has been serving warm, home-style food since 1982. It doesn't try to look fancy or futuristic. Instead, it feels like a friendly ship where everyone knows each other, the walls are covered with fun decorations, and the crew treats you like family. Landing on a Sunday Morning. After church, I stopped in for breakfast. At first, the diner was pretty quiet--about one‑third full. But as time went on, more and more people arrived, until the place was buzzing like a busy command center. Clearly, the locals love this spot. The greeter acted fast, like a well‑trained officer. She took my drink order right away. My large chocolate milk showed up almost instantly in a cold, frosty glass. It was creamy, sweet, and felt like a classic treat from childhood. The Main Mission: Breakfast, I ordered my usual: * Three eggs over easy * Crispy bacon with a crun‑chewy snap * Wheat toast Everything was cooked just right. The eggs had soft, runny yolks perfect for dipping. The bacon had that special mix of crunch and chew. The toast was thick, warm, and toasted just enough. I have a special way of eating this meal. I put an egg onto each wedge of toast, chop it up, dust it with salt and pepper, then fork it into my mouth, one savory bite at a time. The last piece of toast always gets a sweet upgrade. Today, I added both strawberry jam and grape jelly. It was amazing. Service & Atmosphere, the staff stayed friendly and fast, even as the diner filled up. Prices were fair, portions were big, and the whole place had that warm Midwestern feeling--like a safe base after a long journey. Final Verdict, if you want a simple, tasty breakfast that feels like home, Sue's Kountry Kitchen is the place to go. No fancy decorations needed. The food and the people make it shine. Highly recommended for anyone who loves classic diner food done right.

My step daughter ordered a cup of soup and was told that she could just grab it from the salad bar. Could see workers grabbing sides from salad bar for customers with no glove, or one gloving Food was adequate. I'm a big tipper but I couldn't justify my normal 30%, so I left a normal 20% in cash. Ambiance was 2010s pop with a Roku that was playing old westerns that gave up halfway in between out meal and went to the Home Screen. Booths were well worn down and some were even duct tapped. Big boy is not known for being gourmet or even a nice place to eat, but definitely would not pass a health inspection. As someone who worked in the food service industry I was disappointed.

It felt like finding out Santa really DID bring you the good candy. The best part? They have a breakfast buffet. A real one! Those are super rare now, like spotting a reindeer in the wild. But Big Boy has it, and they keep it filled up with fresh food. The whole place looked cleaner too--nice floors, tidy tables, everything looking happy. On my first plate, I grabbed all the yummy classics: * Thick French toast with warm syrup (it tasted like a hug!) * A pancake with sweet cinnamon apples on top * Crispy bacon * Sausage links * Scrambled eggs The French toast was the star--golden and soft and perfect. The pancake was a little old, but the apples made it taste great anyway. The meats were tasty too, just not super hot. On my second plate, I went for the savory stuff: * Fried potatoes * More scrambled eggs * Polish sausage * More bacon and sausage * And then... SAUSAGE GRAVY ON TOP! (Yes, please!) The gravy was rich and peppery and made everything taste extra cozy. Some of the food was a little cool, though. And I saw a pan of cheesy hash browns that looked very burnt--like "left in the oven since last Christmas" burnt. The server was friendly and checked on me just enough--like a good elf who knows when you need more chocolate milk. All in all, this Big Boy is back to being a great place for a big, simple, happy breakfast. The buffet is fun, the place is cleaner, and the staff is kind. If they keep the food a little hotter and swap out old items faster, it'll be even better. If you love breakfast buffets, this one is worth a re-visit. Smiling's my favorite, and breakfast buffets might be my second favorite!

Classic Kelly's Family Restaurant, a Sunday Morning Stop in Cedar Springs, MI…read more After church on this chilly January Sunday (January 11, 2026), I kept up my weekly tradition of trying a different breakfast spot. This time I headed to Classic Kelly's at 356 N. Main St. in Cedar Springs--a longtime local institution that's been serving homestyle breakfasts for decades, though it's been under new management (Heather Youngs) for just the last couple of years. The place was hopping--classic small-town diner on a Sunday morning. Every seat was taken except the one right in front of me. The vibe was warm and lively, full of locals catching up over coffee. My waiter was friendly and on top of things: greeted me immediately, handed over the menu, and quickly returned with a large chocolate milk (always hits the spot after church). I ordered a classic combo--scrambled eggs (with an extra egg added), three sausage links, deep-fried hash brown patties (the crispy, golden McDonald's-style ones that arrived instead of the chunky home fries I was expecting), and wheat toast. Everything tasted good and hearty. The sausages were juicy, the toast nicely buttered, and the portions were generous enough to leave me fully satisfied. Those hash brown patties were a pleasant surprise--crispy outside, soft inside, and honestly delicious. The only minor letdown was the scrambled eggs being a little dry (probably straight from the shell with no extra milk or butter for extra fluff), but a quick hit of ketchup fixed that right up. The kitchen was definitely taking its time, though. With the restaurant at full capacity, my solo visit stretched to over 65 minutes from door to door, with only about 12 minutes of actual eating. It felt a bit drawn out when dining alone, but I can see how it would feel alright with family or friends and good conversation. Now, the decor... let's be honest--it's the one thing that keeps me (and probably a lot of others) from coming back more often. The big, bulky 1970s chairs with armrests and leather seats/backs are straight out of a time capsule, and personally, I can't stand them. They take up way too much space, make navigating the crowded room feel like an obstacle course, and honestly, they feel like a turn-off for newer customers--especially younger generations looking for something fresh and modern. I've been quietly griping about these chairs for the 20 years I've lived in the area, and I still think swapping them for slimmer, standard restaurant seating would open up the dining room, make the place more inviting, and help attract a broader crowd. (Though I get it--more seats might mean even longer waits, so it's a classic diner dilemma.) Payment was a small moment of confusion--used to be pay at the corner, now the server handles it. There was a short wait after my plate was cleared before the check came, adding to my confusion, but no major issue. Bottom line: Classic Kelly's delivers that comforting, no-frills small-town breakfast with a massive all-day menu (omelets, skillets, benedicts, pancakes, you name it), friendly service, and reliably filling food. The new management has kept the welcoming community feel intact while running a busy, well-loved spot. The food is solid, the portions satisfying, and the atmosphere is unmistakably Cedar Springs. If you're not in a rush and enjoy the laid-back pace (or have company to chat with), it's a great choice. Solo diners should just plan for the wait. Great food and heart, but those dated chairs are a real drag and could use an update to bring in more new faces.
