Finally stopped by Tacos El Gallo and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered online without issue. Parking on SW Boulevard is always a nightmare, especially in that little area but I was able to find a spot after a few loops around. I wish I would've had more time to look around the market because it looked like they had a lot of good stuff but I'll have to go back and see. They do have tables inside that you can eat at. The food was done at the quoted time and was accurate. The one individual I encountered was friendly. The menu was very straightforward-tacos, burritos, and a few other items, all can be customized. I had to get an order of chips and queso. I really liked their queso. It had good flavor and wasn't overly spicy. The chips were fresh and held up to the queso nicely. I'm definitely probably alway going to order this when I go. I also tried a taco with carne asada. The tacos are the street variety but they are really good sized. They don't skimp on the meat. And the carne asada was really good. No gristle or gross bits. It was chopped finely and I'd definitely order it again. I also had to try a burrito. I tried the El pastor for that and added on all the toppings-cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, and avocado. I also opted for extra meat because it was super cheap-like $1, so why not? Again, I was not disappointed. I did throw my burrito on the good 'ol George Foreman when I got home because they don't grill it at all and I wanted some grill marks on that tortilla. Otherwise, the el pastor was flavorful and tender and the toppings were all fresh. Per usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach so I saved half of my burrito, but it was a welcome leftover meal the following day. I really love a local place and that's what Tacos El Gallo is to me. It sits along a strip of Latino/Mexican places in KCMO. We have stopped in a couple of times to grab something to go. You order at a counter and pick up at another counter. They have a bar with toppings and sauces/salsas available for you to add to your dish. There are quite a few tables inside if you want to eat in. I happened to have been there on Sundays do the shop item area has been closed but it's fun to glance at some of the wares they have for you to purchase as you wait on your order. I've had birria tacos and we usually get a bunch of tamales as well! We freeze some and eat on them later. Yum! Everything is good and authentic. Everyone we have encountered has been nice. We will definitely stop back by when we are in the area! read more

This place got some really good deals. Love the vibe inside Tacos El Gallo. Price was very reasonable. I got the Birria tacos and the Fish Tacos combo and they were all pretty good. I actually liked the fish taco quite a bit. The fish tasted fresh and paired well with the avocado and onions. I also liked the onion with spicy habanero topping as well. This restaurant can deliver the heat which is always a plus for me. Birria tacos were good but I have had better. Loved that the shells were super crunchy. I think the sauce could have been a bit better. It was a little watery for my taste. Overall, I do think you can get some good value Mexican food here. Not a bad place to check out. read more

A friend of mine brought me some jalapeno and cheese tamales from this place and I am already clearing out my freezer to fill it up with more. I didn't add any salsa or anything on top. It's a VERY good sized tamale with a delicious masa and perfect masa to filling ratio. The Jalapeños weren't too spicy, the cheese was perfect and best of all, they were MOIST despite being microwaved! Finally made it to Tacos El Gallo! As with every place on Southwest Boulevard, street parking can get a bit competitive at busy times, but I was able to grab an angle parking spot right outside. Once inside, head around the corner to the counter to order. You pick up your tacos at the bar right inside the door. Don't forget to swing by the salsa bar for toppings and salsas! Fair warning, the avocado salsa is quite spicy so consider not drenching your tacos in it before you taste it! The salsa diabla that comes with the Birria tacos absolutely set fire to my mouth, so fair warning to those who don't like spicy food! The street tacos I tried (carne asada & pastor) were delicious! The birria tacos were tasty but not my favorite birria tacos in Kansas City. The tortillas got soggy very quickly, so eat quick. The service was quick and kind on a busy weekend night! I have a sentimental connection with this location-- my father was an acquaintance to the owners and he would bring hotel guests when they asked for authentic Mexican tacos. I also got to experience the flavor and great service prior to his passing. On another note, there are indoor and outside seating choices. There are plenty of other authentic items to purchase and different food items; we always opt for carne asada & al pastor tacos with cheesy fries (queso is thick & tasty). We had some work complications that put dinner really late for us on a Saturday night. Mexican food was calling to us and wifey found this spot online. Looked good so we figured, 'why not?". The place was busy, but not overcrowded. Things looked clean and the smells were hypnotizing. Gotta keep this spot in mind for future KC trips! The Birria fries were solid. I am asada fries fan in general, but she was in charge of the order and these were great. She got me an Asada burrito and it was perfect. Carnitas quesadilla for her and she put a roja on it that was spicy enough without murdering her face. Some people had plastic cups for their salsa. We couldn't figure out where those were - LOL. Cold bottles of Jarritos in the refrigerator case topped this off for us. They had most of the current flavors instead of just the 3 or 4 you get at a lot of places. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to make it to Tacos El Gallo. I had lunch plans with a friend and we'd planned on checking out a brand new taqueria closer to her office, but when it was closed we had to pivot. Searching on Yelp we realized this spot was really close by so we made our way there. First thing to note is that it's street parking only and spots can be competitive. We really lucked out finding a spot nearby, so you might need to plan on walking a tad if you don't land in one of the few spots out front. When you walk in it's a pretty standard taqueria/ Mexican convenience store. You have a comprehensive menu of tacos, birria options, sodas, sweets, snacks, and I think even some burritos and tortas. Plenty to choose from. It's a no frills kind of spot but I personally love that. We waited in line and then ordered. I think I had three street tacos for less than $10, which with inflation has become harder and harder to find. When they came out they were nothing short of fresh and delicious. The salsa bar was also fun, though the pico was pretty spicy, even for me (who puts hot sauce on everything!). I'm pretty sure there were fresh jalapenos chopped up in it with the seeds. It was tasty but next time I'll go a little lighter on the pico. Overall it was amazing and fresh. I can't wait to return. read more

All tasty but our favorite was the asada taco served in little yellow corn tortillas and we topped them off with guacamole sauce from the salsa bar. I swore to myself to stop comparing the KC taco scene to that of LA, where I spent many a day finding food trucks that gave me a taste of places like Tijuana, Ensenada and Jalisco, as KC has it's own taco identity that isn't just chains and Taco Bell. This is a new place I've never been to before. It looks like a combo restaurant and gift shop(?) and produces some good food. They cook the interesting parts of both the cow and the pig and I got three street tacos made out of a cows head (cabeza), its tongue (lengua) and a pigs stomach (buche). It came out to $14 with both tax and tip. The quality of food is fantastic, with the best parts being the Beef tacos (I'm more partial to beef and seafood tacos, even though a taco Al Pastor I ate in Mexico City back in 2005 is still my ultimate. Along with the tacos is the condiment bar, with pickled japaeno pieces and onions to complement the couple of cucumbers and radishes that come with it. It is not the best condiment bar and I didn't find a salsa that tickled by spicy tastebuds. I also miss a good picked hot carrot. If there was a minus, it was that the for the price of each taco, the portion size is a bit small. At my favorite LA food truck this would have cost....Oh boy, here I go again..... read more
